the major issue seems to be between analytics and intuition. Paul is an analyst and likes to break the game down, thinking through his turn ahead of time for the maximum benefit. Quinn enjoys the ride and intuitively plays a turn that seems best out of the 5 or 6 option he sees when it is his turn. Games like this drive analysts nuts because they change so much from turn to turn, they seem chaotic and they might be more so because Quinn is not taking optimal turns. Ironically, those sub optimal turns might be optimal because they are frustrating the analyst lol. Great review.
Just look at that fantastic Matt Lees hair-do. It truly was one of the greatest wonders of the world. Too bad the UK had to outlaw it because of aircraft security.
Just picked this up a few months ago and has quickly become my favorite game. My wife and I love to sit down in the evening, and really take our time and dig in for 60-90min great game, our turns rarely take over a min or 2 so AP hasn't been an issue for us. I love how the game forces you to change your strategy so many times through out the game, making it almost impossible play the same way twice. It's not a game to play too often with new people since they will be at a great disadvantage, it takes a couple plays to really figure out all the possible strategies, and what usually works best. My 11yo can play, but she is too young to fully grasp the strategy, so it's difficult for her to win, I would say 13+ is about right. Love it, highly recommended.
Exactly, when you see a good move, you take it. Most people can process options for the 5 colors fairly fast, I mean, to me it's not that big a deal, I'm not that smart after all.
Absolutely love this game!!! We had zero issues with analysis paralysis :) can't believe I held off on this game for so long due to so many ppl complaining about AP issues lol
I agree with Paul. I played this game with my dad a few times, who would take over 20 minutes on some of his turns (yes i did time some). To be fair he did win but I can't play this game again.
I would just never play this game with a person like your dad. If I was ever playing this game with my group of players we’d be telling each other to hurry up after a minute. Just make a move and the more experience you get playing it the more intuitive you will get as to what the best moves are.
Five Tribes is my favorite game in a collection of about 60ish games. That said, it can be hard to find players because my wife does not like it. So I understand this. I also think the game is bad with two players as written because you often get two consecutive turns where you have to plan them both at once which slows things down with even slightly AP people. In a two player game instead we just alternate turns and completely kill the bidding mechanic which is awesome, but not with two IMO.
PAUL IS WRONG! YOU ARE WRONG PAUL!!!! YOU ARE MAKING A GRAVE MISTAKE PAUL!!!!! OPEN YOUR EYES PAUL!!!! LET THE LIGHT THROUGH PAUL!!!!! FIVE TRIBES IS A GREAT GAME PAUL!!!! I LOVE YOU PAUL!!!! -_-
Actually AP is more common in 2p games, where turn order is much more important.. and that's before betting, add even more AP whenever your plan goes wrong..
i love Five Tribes. And it just isn't true you can't do long term planning. Djiinns affect long term planning immensely. Market cards affect long term planning. Viziers too. Many times, it's better to do a move that nets you less points now to set you up for more later. It's just not that apparent in the first few games as you try to understand the puzzle the game throws at you. The reason Five tribes is still highly regarded after some years unlike Relic Runner or Cargo Noir is that Five Tribes depth opens up the more you play it, while with other games you understand all the possibilities the game can offer after just a few games...
it's more tactical, but yes you can do long-term too... it has a great zen to it, you have to move along with the evolving options and what other players do. it's amazing! it's both high and low art, it can appeal and be appreciated by a wide range.
I don't know why some people think this game is difficult, it's quite original and I've been obsessed with it the last 48 hours, I think it is amazing! Just busted out some reviews for it actually.
I miss Paul. I also miss more of this sort of review. I miss you guys! I have to go back and revisit your older videos. It's just how good they are. Don't get me wrong, I also love your newer stuff! But do let Paul know I miss him in the videos.
I would have to be in the middle of both sides for this game too. I like this game, and it's in my collection and I have all the expansions. I think the game is great, not only component wise, but also the interesting mancala style decision making and all the options you have for scoring are interesting. Nevertheless, I feel that this game can be pretty bad depending on who you're playing with. It can be prone to a lot of AP. With people that are just newbies or not regular gamers, the decision making can be tough, and it is just frustrating when you are playing with 4 players to have to wait so long for your turn. Even though we fixed this by setting up a timer for each player to make their move, I still feel that there is AP nevertheless, and just waiting for your turn is frustrating. Also, it can be tough to plan ahead on this game, so for people that like to have more interaction in their games and have a specific strategy, in this game that sometimes is hard to accomplish.
Nain1982 well said. I love this game. But will not play it with AP players....Really though, I won't play most games with AP players.... They suck life out of you as they time murder everyone at the table with their inability to quickly make simple or complex choices. Timers helps the table, but the timer also makes AP players panic and stress out. It's not a happy solution.
I agree, timers can end up being a bad choice as players feel that they make bad choices when rushed. But I just can't stand the constant AP at this game. If there was more interaction in which you would be actively doing things as the other one takes his turn than it wouldn't bother me that much. But in a 4 player game, having AP players just becomes aggravating. I played a game that took at least one more hour than needed because of this. Like I've said before, I do enjoy this game. Nevertheless, it's a very selective one, as I have to bring it out only in the right crowd.
Honestly having to re-plan your move every time seems absolutely awesome to me! Like you get your brain working without having to overanalyze things. If anyone knows any other games like this pls tell me!
I like Five Tribes. The only thing that bothers me is that thematically all the jumping around with coloured meeples and those surrounding rules seem silly. Theme is pretty important for me and that just doesn't compute.
Paul is wrong, this is one of the best games I have ever played. My roommates and I played every night for a week when we first got it and every game was vastly different and vastly fun (and for the most part came down to a few points between players) except I which consistently lost the game. Anyways, It is a great game!
I lean on the "don't like this" side. I'm probably more down on the game than I should be because I'd heard so much great stuff about it and expected so much. After the 3rd or 4th turn I was just trying to make the game end quicker.
I love this game and have actually managed to win against two different groups every time we play, so there is definitely not chaos in it. That said, my groups are very AP prone, and a play of this takes us at least 1.5 hours and usually 2 just from my opponents thinking everything through in the way that Paul describes. They have difficulty seeing the moves and feel like they have to calculate each one as if this were Brass, and since the game clicks with me, I seem to be able to make the turn-to-turn adjustments necessary to make the right moves without the AP. As you can imagine, the combination of the length (for us), the fact that the one other player who enjoyed it no longer plays with us, and my unbeaten streak, it has not gotten to the table in quite a while.
Evgeni Dimitrov so you want a game were no other player effects your turn or what you wanted to do? Is that even a game?.. and all games can take a long time if a player has AP or can't make fast decisions. I play 5 tribes with 4 players, family and friends, and it only takes 45-65 minutes. That's a fast game! The slowest part is the bidding for the people I play with... But I can understand not liking this game because you have to quickly assess the board and think on your feet. Maybe that's a skill you don't have, and feel uncomfortable being shoved into that situation turn after turn, idk. For me, Paul is wrong. #Paul_is_wrong To me, 5 tribes to me is a beautiful example of emergent strategy. You can't plan before the game to win a specific way and follow through on that plan. The randomized board and chaos from other players turns, make each round into a puzzle of hedging your bets on the best strategy to go for.
I've never encountered (a) a single case of analysis paralysis, or (b) an instance where you can't forward plan your turn in this game. I LITERALLY have no idea what people are talking about when they mention these things as negatives. Five Tribes is a fantastic game.
I mean, if you want to be AP, you can be AP on nearly any game. Most people can see a decent move in a minute or less... I mean if you want to study and analyze every conceivable move, yeah, you could be screwed, but I enjoy it for what it is, which is a brilliant game !!
I could be wrong, but I thought you used the power of the tile that your last meeple ENDED on, and not the tile you picked up all of your meeples from. Ignore this if I am wrong. Hooked on your reviews because they are both entertaining and informative!
But you're right! Why would I disregard you being right? The rules say: Once your Meeples’ Tribe actions are over, perform the Action for the Tile your last Meeple ended on, regardless of whether you then took control of that Tile or not.

dannydoesright lol. is it because of AP? or people can't see any moves? I love this game to death, but you have to play with the right group of people.. or enforce a timer. it's not friendly to do the timer, but neither is holding a table hostage because you can't make a low stakes decision...
