  • As of this video’s release the TV numbers for the 2023 Daytona 500 have been released and unfortunately once again they are down from the previous year. So today with that knowledge in hand we are going to look at it and the surrounding information around it from Speedweek and see if NASCAR is in any kind of big trouble or if it is only a small problem that can be managed over time. So does the Daytona 500 have a ratings problem? A closer look.

3 things to note about why the ratings went down
#1. Fox's awful coverage and obsession with commercials
#2. 2022 had the next-gen car hype to boost it, unlike 2023.
#3. Apparently, people in dozens of markets weren't able to watch the race cause of a dispute between Dish Network, Direct TV, and Fox. Of what I've found so far, Jacksonville was the biggest market for NASCAR that's been affected by it. Will update if more is found.
Not saying that ratings would have been up had these factors not been in play, but considering them, an 8% drop is far from the worst news NASCAR ratings have seen in recent years. Especially considering the other races at Daytona for the weekend were up.

I’m a diehard fan. I’ve actively supported NASCAR throughout all of its massive changes over the last twenty years. But, this past Sunday, I was switching over to watch the Genesis Open because I knew I was going to get more action on the golf telecast than I was on the Daytona telecast. That’s how bad it’s gotten. The PGA’s commercial breaks are always side-by-side and MUCH less frequent.
And even when Fox is actually not shoving a commercial down your throat, they’re missing all the big dramatic little moments throughout races. The moment I first realized it was when the almost completely missed Kyle Larson flipping at Talladega in 2019. They had like one halfway decent angle that was partially obstructed by fencing and RVs in the infield. Then last year, they COMPLETELY missed Jessica Friesen’s flip at Knoxville. The camerawork is horrible and the commentary gets weaker with every passing year.
Broadcasts have to start going backwards in time, where the commentary is more reactionary to what’s actually happening on track than a bunch of technical, hypothetical nonsense with a few corny jokes sprinkled in. It all delegitimizes the sport.
And they need to get the camera guys back to the racetrack. In 2020, Fox and NBC brought smaller camera crew rosters to the track. Of course they blamed COVID, but I think it was really just cost-cutting because the pandemic is long over and we’re still missing action on the track. It’s either because they never brought the camera crews back up to past levels or the production truck horribly coordinates how the cameras are utilized.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If NASCAR makes a service that is similar to F1TV, as in a subscription based service with no ads and the same feed, NASCAR fans and new fans alike would eat that up. Especially the younger audiences who don’t have TV plans or anything and live off of subscription services (like me). One thing that hurt the ratings in my view was the fact that the NBA All Star Game was taking place at the same time the race was ending which took away the regular sports fan because they flipped over to TNT to see the start of that. However this year's NBA All Star Game drew the lowest TV ratings in the history of the event mainly because there was zero defense being played & showed that the NBA only really draws its biggest ratings during the playoffs, not during the regular season & especially not for the All Star Game. The NBA has a much bigger ratings problem with its All Star Game than NASCAR does with the Daytona 500 in my view though Fox really needs to eliminate commercials from its broadcasts because it doesn't help NASCAR gain an audience when the race is interrupted by commercials every 10 minutes.

If the lower ratings is a trend for the 2023 NASCAR season, that could equate to lower dollar rates advertisers are willing to pay to Fox; which could equate to Fox having to run more commercials per race to make up for the lower dollar rates charged per 15 ~ 30 seconds spots.
Given the population growth in the US, which should equate to having a viewership increase with the televised races; when there is a ratings decline, even with a percentage point, the corporate suits gets alarmed by it; as they anticipate a TV ratings rise, and not a decline.

The prospects of hanging around to see that makes me less than excited.

It’s not just ratings, it’s the popularity of the sport that’s declining. NASCAR used to treat itself like an actual sport. Now they just lean into entertainment at every opportunity. The problem is that racing fans don’t like the goofy entertainment gimmicks and the general public doesn’t care for ratings. NASCAR’s old fan base was their golden goose, and they forgot to care.

Some people simply DO NOT ENJOY RACING! No matter the type of, drivers, and everything else. Plus, it's commom series and their special races struggle with audience, F1 is a great example, the IndyCar herself so... There's notting much to worry about.

This might be a hot take, but Superspeedway racing is the least fun to watch that Nascar has to offer. You sit for the first 2 and a half hours, watching the group run in a giant pack, where nothing means anything as long as you're still alive at the end. Then, a big one happens, and it's a spectacle, followed by half an hour of cleanup. It's fun, and there are worse on the schedule, but a good intermediate or a good short track will almost always trump a good superspeedway.
