The Fourth Hendrick Driver

- The fourth Hendrick driver is a mix of an internet meme and a performance trend that NASCAR fans have noticed for over two decades. While Hendrick Motorsports is the greatest superpower team in the history of NASCAR even it has weak points and perceived weak points. From underachievers like Casey Mears and Brian Vickers to popular stars like Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Kasey Kahne it is an interesting set of drivers to say the least. Today we will look back at that and how since 2002 there has almost always been a guy lagging behind at Hendrick Motorsports

In light of this topic who is your favorite Hendrick driver? Was it one of these drivers we talked about today?
Bowman
Byron
Bowman
Bowman, hes just super likebale
Bowman
This whole video is basically just conveying that Alex Bowman is a good driver and has earned his place at Hendrick. Well done, Jarret 😂😂😂😂
Glad Alex bowman is proving the doubters wrong this playoff run
People forget that before his injury last year he was leading in points.
@@TheForeverRanger I came here to say that exact thing he was leading the points until penalties and injuries killed his season
Exactly tho people talk shit about Bowman and they don't even look back at his breakout year or the fact he led the points in 2023 until the massive penalty and his back injury as a dale Jr/Alex Bowman fan I will admit this there's been multiple times he should've won races Kansas 2019 dover 1 2019 Daytona 500 this year Auto club 2023 maybe spring Talladega 2019 Kansas 2 2020 Darlington 1 2020 2020 coca cola 600 but he did fall off a bit after the coca cola 600 in 2020 but when the playoffs came in 2020 he made it to the round of 8 with a second place finish in Kansas during the round of 8
see if he gets past the round of 8
@@TheForeverRanger Second most overall points earned in the 2020 playoffs, only behind his teammate Elliott, I believe he was close to the top out of the playoff drivers in most points earned in the 2022 playoffs prior to his injury, and as you mentioned, leading the points in '23 prior to his injury. I still believe that he even started this year out not quite at 100% from his back injury yet he was still one of the most consistent all year, being as high as 5th overall in average finish prior to his stretch of bad luck that started at Indy. He still hasn't had a truly clean injury free season since 2021.
This may be and could end up being the best lineup HMS has ever had with all 4 drivers running well.
they just have struggled to succeed at phoenix in the fall
THIS COMMENT IS MAINLY ABOUT BOWMAN
To drive for HMS is like playing for the Lakers or the Dallas cowboys, championships are expected and anything below that is considered a failure, so to be a top 10 player, QB, or driver is gonna be looked apon as bad. It's not fair but that's what makes it so cool when they do reach or succeed there expectations
I'll add another sports analogy with driving for Hendrick is like trying to be a goalie with the NHL 's Philadelphia Flyers. Massive load on their shoulders as they expect them to be THEE ONE. So all things considered bowman is a good driver and has been the most consistent it seems like of all the drivers who've drove the 4th Hendrick car. (I thought Kahne did better than the stars showed but alas he did not)
The issue i think with Bowman's perception is he's a really good driver in a team of great or legendary drivers
As the fourth driver i think he copes with it very well, he has definitely matured in the last few years.
bowman's a known emo + warped tour attendee so that's lifelong respect. also more personality than the other three guys combined
@@glimmick Larson des show his and Byron a little bit but Elliott has none
I legit did not know this. Although I guess I could have always kind of imagined it. No wonder I've always liked Bowman!
Considering how the fans treat him these days im not surprised he’s an MCR fan
Kyle Busch fans are going through the exact same thing Dale Jr. fans experienced 15 years ago.
Yep, this year hurts as a Kyle Busch fan
Dude it's pain! he's probably going winless unfortunately hopefully he gets on track next year I keep hoping he'll have that Jeff Gordon early 40s renaissance
@@theultimatekfbfan2721 I think he still can win too with how he's been running
I'll always be a Bowman defender and supporter. Became a fan once Dale Jr said he believed in him and took his place in the 88. Made it to HMS in 1 of the most unlikely paths possible.
He has potential, he just needs to rid himself of the track killer ability once he wins TexARSE. He already axed Chicago and SoCal as viable markets
@@S.K.R.E.Inc. haha yes. I'm all for that 😄.
Only Bowman for me, Jr before that and Gordon
It’s a shame Kasey Kahne was Hendrick’s 4th driver. He could have won a championship and reached his full potential if they put more into his car
I'm not wondering if the early effects of his health issues was starting to show starting 2015
Wrong. Kasey was always overrated as a driver
Overrated sure an overrated driver grabbing 6 wins in a year and being a consistent win threat when he actually has the equipment him being "overrated" is your opinion and not the opinion of real fans who knew just how talented he was@@hunternixonfishing2500
His last name wasn’t Earnhardt Rick could care less about him
I agree so much, was a fan since I started watching back in 08. He managed to be competitive in a damn Red Bull racing car. He finished 4th in points in 2012. Also a big problem was kieth roden, we can see now more than then as he can’t even hold a spot down at rcr now. Had so much potential but was buried by Gordon, Johnson and jr
Alex Bowman is a top 10 driver in NASCAR right now. He was leading the points when injured in 2023. He’s made the playoffs and has been top 10 in points all of 2024. He has wins at short tracks, intermediate tracks, big tracks like Pocono and Auto Club, and even a street course.
The only issue is that he’s behind Larson, Elliott, and Byron which is why he gets so much hate. It’s like saying Tua or Herbert are terrible NFL QBs just because they play in the same conference as Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, and Jackson.
Kasey Kahne was overshadowed at Hendrick. Kyle Busch took a gigantic risk going to Toyota from HMS. That’s because racing besides champions and future HOFers is difficult. It’s hard to win races and championships when so much attention from your own shop goes to the 5/9/24. It’s better to be the lead driver at Trackhouse, RCR, or maybe even Spire than being 4th on the totum pole at HMS or any other organization.
It’s why Sheldon Creed and Sam Mayer were smart to sign with Haas, as there’s just such a log jam at Chevy right now. Look at what happened to Zane Smith, no room at Chevy. The competition and drama off the track is just as spicy as what goes on in the races.
William Byron: Private
Chase Elliott: Kolwalski
Kyle Larson: Skipper
Alex Bowman: Rico
Alex Bowman is my guy. Has been since he took over for Junior. Yeah he doesn't have the resume of his teammates, but he's better than many will ever give him credit for. He's quietly consistent and has the biggest personality of the entire HMS stable. I'm so happy he's proving the doubters wrong in his current playoff run
I see it the exact same way
I'd argue the 48 was the 4th driver from 2018 to 2020. Like mentioned, he was only outran by Elliott those years. But 2021 to the present he's definitely been the 4th driver at Hendrick
I know this will get a lot of backlash, but the way I see it, in the 2024 season, Chase Elliot has been the fourth Hendrick driver. I love the guy, but he just can't close the deal sometimes. Bowman is the same way. They are both in the right places at the wrong times, waiting for an opportunity that isn't coming. Either way, all four Hendrick cars are great. All four of them could win championships.
I will give them credit at least all four cars are closer now
Hendrick was joked upon as a 2 car team from 2002 to like 2016
Vickers is from my home town, hell my former volly fd even put out a fire at his house once. He ain’t got the best reputation around here
I think Bowman is a great driver, he suffers this curse known as the #48
That car always seems to be finding its way into wrecks, and when Johnson comes back to drive the #84, it's that car instead. It's become a running joke of mine to mention every time Bowman or Johnson wreck in any way, call out the curse of the 48!
I got your back, Alex. no matter if you win or lose, we all ride together!
Honestly Dale deserved his terrible 09 season for wrecking the field at the 2009 Daytona 500. Even more fitting was that Vickers had easily the best season of his career in 09 😂
Supported the 48 from the beginning n will to the end. I have no idea why the showman gets so much hate he replace the most popular driver in Jr then replace( in my opinion the best NASCAR driver ever) in Jimmie and has been a top 15 driver his whole career
Thats exactly why i became a bowman fan. Taking over for Jr.
He killed off a couple of good tracks in the process, though. And he still hasn't won TexARSE
I really want to see this version of Hendrick go for as long as possible
Kasey Kahne Deserved better than he got
Always just Underappreciated
I love the dude, solid driver and seemed like a decent enuff dude
There's a Reason why Dale Jr believed in Alex Bowman
Speaking of which Happy Birthday Dale Jr! 🎂
Alex Bowman is my favourite Hendrick driver currently. Mark Martin is one of my favourite drivers ever
0:33 I will look at William Byron if i want just because he was 2018 rookie Pause I'm not gay
?
Alex Bowman is the 4th Hendrick driver so to speak, however, he is just as competitive as Larson, Byron, and Elliott when he is on top of his game and a threat when he has a winning race car. In the 2024 playoffs, Bowman has been looking good so far. He has the potential to take his talents to the next level. He just needs to make it happen.
Jr is definitely my favorite HMS driver. Love his personality. I think Kahne is underrated. Out of the current drivers, I’d go with Elliott since my dad is a fan of him
I grew up a Jeff Gordon fan. I was born in 95. I also never really had anyone close to me that was into NASCAR. So i really got into it on my own. honestly don't remember much until around 2002/ 2003 as far as nascar goes. So I became a definitive Jeff Gordon fan after all his championships. Then I moved over to Chase Elliott when he took over for Jeff Gordon. It also helped that Chase Elliott was really good out the gate despite not winning until year 3.
"The First Hendrick Driver" if we are talking about the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs
Danica Patrick will forever be The Catalyst of The Jeff Gordon/Clint Bowyer Saga in 2012 (Which Foreshadowed The Matt Kenseth/Joey Logano Saga in 2015) because of The Contract between Stewart Haas Racing & Tommy Baldwin Racing on The 10 Car benefitting both teams which is why David Reutimann caused The Race Altering Caution with 4 to go in The Spring Martinsville Race (Which Resulted in The Infamous Phoenix Race 7 Months Later) To stay in The Top 35 as a means of guaranteeing Danica a spot in The 9 Remaining Races (With The Daytona 500 being Danica's Cup Series Debut where She Finished 2 Spots Ahead of Jeff Gordon and 4 Spots Ahead of Jimmie Johnson) in regards to her Part-Time Cup schedule which consisted of 10 Races.
Tim Richmond hands down. Probably one of the biggest “what-ifs” in all of NASCAR.
My favorite Hendrick driver is Darrell Waltrip. 1989 was a missing ring for him
BOWBRO propaganda video 🙏
Ever since Jimmie retired, Bowman has been my guy and its crazy the amount of disrespect he gets. He won't be the one to win the most races or dominate a whole season, but he's consistent and will always be up front when it matters to capitalize on other's mistakes. I think he gets all this flack because he wasn't some prodigy coming through the ranks like a Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson or William Byron. He's had to work for every single opportunity he's been given in this sport and I'm so glad to see its finally paying off for him. I honestly think this Hendrick core is good and young enough to stay intact for another 5+ years.
I think bowman just doesn't get noticed enough. Half the time if you don't look for him you won't see him. If he is slow it's because he's lugging around that job security with that 3 year contract extension
Well this new Aussie fella in the booth seems to like him!
Favorite Hendrick driver...? I was a Dale, Jr. fan for his entire career (except for a bit in 2004 when I was a contrarian preteen and switched my allegiance temporarily to Kenseth just to spite my Jr. fan parents), and no driver since he retired has really captured my fandom quite like he did. I've become a bit of a Kyle Busch fan, but he hasn't been at Hendrick since 2007, and I kind of hated his guts until well into his time at JGR. I've also become a Chase Elliott fan, but I'm just not as much of a fan of his as I was of Dale, Jr.
Favorite Hendrick driver the Ice Man...Terry Labonte. ..man he could drive
Gordon and Johnson were the dynamic dual of HMS
The current 4 combined cannot FATHOM getting close to how the original 2 greats did in all their years of racing
@@S.K.R.E.Inc. larson
The most funny thing is how people were actually surprised that Bowman didn't exit playoffs in first round.
Favorite Hendrick driver is Kasey Kahne. When I started watching NASCAR my top three was Bobby Labonte, (18) Kasey Kahne (9) and Jr. (8).
Two issues Bowman has; neither of which are of his doing:
1. This is probably the best overall lineup Hendrick has ever had. Save for maybe Gordon, Johnson, Jr., Martin, and even then, each year clearly had a driver lagging behind the other 3. Larson is probably the most talented driver in the Cup Series today, Byron probably has the highest ceiling (that’s yet to be reached anyway) and Elliott has already won a championship. Bowman is easily a top 12-15 driver, maybe even top 10, but his 3 teammates are obvious top 10 picks.
2. When you’re at Hendrick, you’re expected to at least contend for championships. Elliott and Larson have already won a title and Byron was a favorite all of last year, even making the Champ 4. Bowman, while consistent, just hasn’t exhibited the ability to outright win a title yet whereas two of his teammates have already won one and the other contended for one just last year.
Kasey Kahne favorite hendrick driver, now it’s Alex bowman.
Keeping Casey Mears instead of Kyle Busch is still a terrible decision. I don’t care how you look at it.
Busch was too aggressive for Hendrick's caliber. They're like the posh team whilst Busch is of the Rowdy sort. A perfect fit to be Tony Stewart's replacement in 2008 and more worthy of the 3 car than his silver-spooned brat of a teammate he has
@@S.K.R.E.Inc. I get Busch’s driving style is way different compared to Jimmie & Gordon but Larson’s also shown to be aggressive on-track and he’s still thriving.
@@S.K.R.E.Inc. Kyle Busch championships: 2
Casey Mears championships: 0
Who cares how aggressive he is, stats don't lie
Just a reminder that Joe Nemechek won a race for Hendrick in the 25 car. He led the most laps in that race as well I believe
My favorite Hendrick driver was Jeff Gordon. I felt like once Jimmie Johnson joined the team. Gordon's performance went downhill, and it was Jimmie Johnson that kept him from winning anymore championship. Cause he would have tied Earnhardt and Petty in Championships
2013 wasn't Kahne, it was Gordon as well
One prerequisite is no rookie drivers, but 2004 Brian Vickers is on here. 🤔
Sure the wins haven't been there but he has been the model of consistency for a while. He is a Ryan Newman-type where he may not get a lot of wins but he will be in the top-15 most races.
I'm just glad there's no Matt Kenseth-like driver to ruin it with a championship clinch 3 races before the season end. On the other hand, Bowman needs to get rid of his track killer habit and avoid getting so many DNFs like Newman did
I think what gets Bowman so much flak is how he got into the car compared to his teammates. The previous "4th drivers" all were promising up and comers that just didn't hit the highs of their established teammates. Bowman though has been in the mix, but we didn't see him cut a path through the ranks as traditionally. Adding to this with the playoff format bouncing him usually around the round of 12 or 16, the end results don't give him much favor.
any team with Cup aspirations would kill to have a driver like Alex Bowman
jeff gordon is my favorite driver ever across any motorsport. i think that constitutes him for my spot as favorite hendrick driver
Jimmie Johnson was my favorite Hendrick Motorsports driver
I am surprised Ricky Craven wasn't included. He went to the #25 ride and expected big things, but he ended up having a lot of hard crashes and concussions. Ricky never showed how good he could have been in the #25 and later had much better outings when he went to Cal Wells. The #25 always seemed to be cursed with bad luck for a time.
Exactly. I always think how many races went wrong for Nadeau in that 25
Jimmie Johnson is my all time favorite Hendrick driver of all time
Honestly from 2018 until 2022 I thought Byron was the 4th Hendrick driver
Back when Jeff Gordon was a the third Hendrick driver in '93
Ive always though Hendrick would be a powerful trio cause the 4th team just lags way off the minimal standard
Alex Bowman is currently the fourth best Hendrick driver. In HMS history, Alex Bowman is BY FAR THE BEST fourth Hendrick driver
He reminds me of a more consistent and level-headed HMS Kyle Busch
Favorite Hendrick driver?...Kyle Larson today, tomorrow and yesterday.
Bowman has a problem that he's great, but Hendrick as a team and his teammates are exceptional.
Not a head scratcher for Bowman since 2018, Chase Elliott insanely talented and champion, Kyle Larson generational talent and champion, William Byron insanely talented and very consistent, Bowman mid except for 2024 where he’s been good
Clint Bower - The official 4th driver
I mean,
in 2020 HMS was 1st(Elliott) 6th(Bowman) 14th(Byron) and 18th(Johnson)
In 2019 HMS was 10th(Elliott) 11th(Byron)12th(Bowman) 18th(Johnson)
2019 Bowman was right behind 2 of the 3 treamates with Johnson being well back and 2020 bowman was ahead of Byron and well ahead of Johnson
id say 2019-2020 was the 48
As a bowman fan you were glazing to hard
Bowman is the best 4th guy HMS has ever had
It's DAEL's 50th Birthday!!!
October 10, 1974. He has officially surpassed his father in age
We watched for over a decade the 48 win every week or finish top 3 including five straight titles, I think that doesn’t help bowman because people don’t wanna see another 48 reign and hell I’m a Hendrick fan for life. Dude seems alright to me just doesn’t win enough
The 5 is the 48 team.
The 48 is the 88 team.
9 is the 24 team
And I honestly don’t know what the 24 team is? The old 5? They hadn’t run that for years though. Maybe the previous 9?
So the 48 team is being piloted by Larson right now, and he’ll never be able to put up Jimmy numbers in this day and age, but he certainly is still making them the most dominant team in NASCAR.
Favorite ever but never got to see him race on TV or in person but anyways tim Richmond 💯
Bowman is a great driver and does have more wins than most drivers in the past few years
Ive been with Hendrick my whole life. Since Jeff Gordon. If Hendrick replaces Bowman with a Hailey, or Karuth soon, IM DONE. Absolute garbage decision.
It irritates me to no end the way people overlook and disrespect Alex, especially the media. He's got everybody's attention now though.
Favorite driver?!
Current: 1) Alex 2) Chase
Former: 1) Dale 2) Jeff & Jimmie are tied.
I wonder if the hate would be less if he wasn’t driving the 88 then the 48 like image if when he went full time he took the number 25
Alex Bowman just isn't as flashy as his teammates...
He's not the generational talent that is Kyle Larson
He doesn't have the popularity of Chase Elliott
Even compared to William Byron, he isn't that young prodigy
He's just... A guy... But that doesn't mean he's undeserving of his ride.
Bowman is the best 4th Hendrick driver in the teams history💯
Actually Jimmie J was their best #4 - just not on paper.
The 4th HMS driver has always been the “Ugly Duckling” so to speak. They’ve gotten the leftovers of the race team in a way.
I was a Kasey Kahne fan.
My hate my favourite Hendrick driver right now is chase Elliott but my favourite Hendrick driver of all time is Jimmy Johnson
Alex Bowman suffers a lot from consistency in my opinion. He has plenty of good runs but he has a tendency to spend a lot of races just kind of putting around in the 11th-20th range without doing much else. If he could be a more consistent threat to win or if he secured more top-10's/5's I think people would have a better opinion of him, but he just doesn't compared to his much more consistently top-tier teammates. If you ask me though, the fact that Bowman is that "4th Hendrick Driver" is really more of a complement to how good Hendrick's lineup as a whole is than an indictment of Bowman himself, because on most other teams Bowman would probably be one of if not the top guy there.
Around 2000 Jimmie Johnson was the #4 Hendrick driver. Only problem was Nascar had a 3 team limit. Hendrick got around it by saying Jeffie was the Owner. Just another Hendrick fraud.
The Curious Case of Alex Bowman
The number 48 is the only car number to achieve the dover dozen
I don't think Alex Bowman is going anywhere
The only driver that I would like to see in the 48 car someday is rajah caruth but he still has some growing to do Competitively
Bowman is arguably the best (several year) number 4 guy of all time. For some reason too many fans think that all 4 drivers on a team will be top 5 drivers in all of cup. Just doesn't happen.
I'm not even a Bowman fan but unless you can replace him with a younger guy that's an absolute stud and turns Elliott or Byron into your number 4 guy, which would be hard, there's no reason to swap him for anybody. I like the Justin Haley types but is he for sure better? I'd say he's roughly same talent. Young Denny Hamlins or Kyle Buschs aren't everywhere. Unless you steal someone like Reddick away from a RCR, there just aren't many options.
Hendrick drivers combined have the personality of a piece of dry burnt toast
Then you obviously don’t know Alex Bowman. If you’re ignorant on a subject, maybe don’t speak on it.
@@spencermccormick299 how is he in the sack?

Alex Bowman is just as good as Byron and Elliot. Larson is the best in the world..
Like stated in the video, Bowman isnt as flashy or dominant on the racetrack as Byron and others have shown at times.. Outside the track, his personality and way with sponsors is the best in NASCAR.
Really hope Bowman can get a title and shut everyone up 😢
William Byron was definitely the weakest link in his first 2 seasons at HMS.
That’s mainly because he was like 19 years old when he joined, but since his first winning seasons he’s been great
My favorite HMS drivers are Gordon and Byron!!!!!!
As of this year, I would say Chase Elliott is the fourth driver. He hasn't shown winning speed or top 5 speed, and he has the fewest laps led then the other three this year, too. I am not hating on Chase Elliott. This is just my thought
i honestly feel like Alex Bowman gets too much hate for not being like his other teammates and people being like way was he Dale jrs replacement why could've been Ross Chastain instead.
#48 should be Jimmie Johnson.
Alex is just an all around likeable guy too. Don't get all the hate on him.
Bowman is poised to make the round of 8 off of speed and people think he should be at spire. lol get real
Regardless of team affiliation, what's doing him in is the fact that he is a bit lacking in power and speed. He'll either rank low or get caught up in a wreck. Not to mention he carries this stigma of ending tracks whenever he wins there that weekend
Jj was the 4th guy at the end of
Seems like Chase Elliott is the 4th guy in the Chase right now…
Maybe Alex bowman will officially retired from Hedrick Motorsport
ME AFTER SEEING THE TITLE : Yeah.
When push comes to shove he’ll be the first driver at Hendrick to be let go. I will say this though, I could actually see Larson being done with Nascar in the not so distant future.
Im hopeing that Bowman the Showman or WILLIE-B wins the championship 🏆 so Hendricks will have 3 championship drivers Elliott Larson and Bowman or Bryon if they win
People need to stop hating on Alex Bowman
Great video! However, I feel like the thumbnail and title are misleading; when I first saw the video I thought it was going to be a critique on Alex Bowman’s performance, but maybe I just have a brick for a brain or something!
Ranking Hendrick's 2024 playoffs:
1. #48 Alex Bowman (+26)
2. #5 Kyle Larson (+52)
3. #24 William Byron (Advanced)
4. #9 Chase Elliott (+13)
They should have retired the 24 and 48, those numbers only belong to Gordon and Johnson. Byron in the 25, and Bowman in either the 46 or 49 (the only other numbers in that range available)
@@S.K.R.E.Inc. their the 2nd best in the 24 and 48 too and likely to stay that way
Larson has won a race (I think he and Logano are the only playoff drivers to do so) and 3 stages, and all but mathematically advanced to the next round…. There is legitimately no argument for Bowman over him other than “vibes”
Byron you can at least argue (flimsy though it may be) cause he hasn’t won a race
MTJ was the 4th Gibbs driver this year
It’s a toss up between him and Ty Gibbs. Truex is statistically the better driver now but he’s past his prime and is obviously leaving JGR soon. Many people don’t like to admit it, but I can see Ty Gibbs becoming a Cup champion at some point in his career. The ceiling is pretty high for him
It was definitely Gibbs this year
