He couldn't unsheathe the sword to kill his uncle initially ALSO because the sword can only be used at night, being the Night Blade and all, and it was just turning dawn at that moment. You can hear a rooster crow in the background of that scene.
I know you’re being ironic making fun of the “real cinema” bros who can’t stand MCU films and eat up stuff like this but guess what, they’re right. I don’t know how you can walk out of the theater after seeing a film like this and say to yourself “I can’t wait for the next dull directed poorly lit flatly shot colored graded like a parking lot commercial for the next commercial” that is the modern Marvel movie landscape.
Heard Eggers describe Amleth’s berserker raider period as his “Hakuna Matata phase” which is just perfect. Also, the rule with the sword was that it can only be unsheathed at night or at the gates of Hel.
This sounds like a really cool film. It's a shame that it's not doing well at the box office because it's not an established IP or a sequel. Thanks for the shout-out again, too!
The Dude that plays The Uncle is just amazing. He was only doing European Made-for-TV movies for ages, and all of a sudden he freakin kills it as Netflix' Dracula, and now this.
Soooo, I found the conversation about hallucinations very interesting. I decided to do a bit of research, and found that Vikings had a tendency to get really high before battle, to put them on a state of constant rage. The combination of the drug, the battle induced adrenaline, and injuries can contribute to severe fatigue after it all went down. To the point of being in a zombie-like state. A state of being awake and asleep at the same time. If you’ve experienced sleep paralysis, it is the same thing. This pretty much solidifies that every time he hallucinated, he was either on something, shifting between states of consciousness, or completely passed out. So pretty much, this movie could’ve been a biography of some viking warrior in that time period.
Yup, mainly Berserkers and Ulfhednar would eat psychedellic shrooms/henbane and would start going crazy before a battle. Once they were unleashed on the battlefield they were a force to be reckoned with. After battle depending on the injuries and psychedellic they used, it would leave them almost useless until they would recover.
After watching this movie, I could see Robert Eggers knocking a God of War movie or Dark Souls out of the park! Between him and Ari Aster, I'd say supernatural or horror movies are safe in their hands.

The game they're playing where they beat the shit out of each other is an older version of a sport called Hurling. You use a wooden paddle with a metal plate on it called a Hurl and hit a leather ball called a Sliothar. We still play it over in Ireland, though we do wear helmets and shin guards so you don't get mutilated by a strike in the face from a Hurl.

I just saw this film for the second time. Originally I learned about this movie because I love Bjork (don’t worry, not too much). After watching the trailer I was convinced it was gonna be great. It is, this will be a movie I return to throughout my life. Didn’t even realize it was the director of The Lighthouse until after my first viewing. Sad that it’s failing in the box office but this will be one of those movies that lives on for decades.
I was convinced this was the origin story of Eric Northman from Tru Blood. I loved the authentic sets and costumes. Alexander Sarsgaard was awesome in the film.
I wasn’t going to watch this because I didn’t care about the movie, but then I saw it was Frank, so I *had* to watch it. Also, are Tony and Frank related, or is it just how all Italians look alike?
Great video, great movie. This was fun and frank is a fun guest. Funny thing, though, that you say it's like hamlet, frank is right , and in fact this story was made before hamlet and hamlet took the story from this
I plan on watching this episode once I see The Northman. Which should be 45 days after it was released in theaters that's when it's available to rent and stream at home.
HA!..... This is a flick I have been wanting to go watch since I saw the trailers.... But I keep forgetting to go to the theater!.... Yes.... I like going to the theater....
Yes, but she's also a manipulator and tried to seduce her own son who she tried to have killed when he was a child. I mean, a slave being raped is pretty bad, but trying to murder your own son who's innocent in that matter and then trying to seduce him as an adult is pretty damn messed up in its own right 😂. But that's why I love this movie, it's pretty brutal from beginning to end with not only its action, but it's themes and story.
