It is a story about a 16 year old girl in a rich familiy come to visit her back yard garden, falled a sleep, met a hansam guy in the dream, and woke up by the falling flowers.
I totally understand those who did not like this performance. Kunqu Opera is not even understood by most of Chinese and not popular in China either. However this does not obliterate its great artistic value and true beauty of literature and music including its complicated physiology of phonation and poem style lyrics. To totally understand its lyric, even Chinese must know many obscure literary allusions. It was totally designed for people with high literacy accomplishments and was hard to follow by ordinary people.
However, I'm truly enjoying this just by looking at their dance and costumes and everything, also by listening to the singing. I really hope that it isn't seen as s sign of ignorance if I don't understand a single word and dare to say I'm enjoying it. I would love to be expert in Kunqu Opera someday and know the things you've said about but I don't even speak Mandarin. How many years I should spend and how many books to read about this... Maybe in the furure I'll have the chance to see such a show with my own eyes and enjoy 100%. Respect from Poland.
Thanks for the context! I’ve seen this piece done in several different clips and thought it was an example of modern Chinese opera 😅 that it’s truly an ancient form makes soooo much more sense!

Kunqu stands as the oldest extant genre of Chinese theatre and has had far-reaching influences on Chinese literature, stage performance, music, and dance. In 2001, UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) proclaimed kunqu, along with 18 other forms of cultural genres, as a masterpiece of “the oral and intangible heritage of humanity.”
