Du Liniang: If I had not come to the garden, how could I have tasted the beauty of spring!
    (To the tune of Zaoluopao)
Du Liniang: The flowers glitter brightly in the air,
Around the wells and walls deserted here and there.
Where is the “pleasant day and pretty sight”?
Who can enjoy “contentment and delight”?
The clouds at dawn and rain at dusk,
The bowers in the evening rays,
The threads of shower in gales of wind,
The painted boat in hazy sprays.

When I was a kid, I never enjoyed this kind of traditional opera.
High pitched voice, slow-paced plot, exotic costumes, heavy makeup, strange movement … I couldn’t understand why adults enjoyed it so much.
Now, finally, I get it! However, I can not tell why

  • @Diogeno
    @Diogeno 4 года назад +1268

    Let’s not get it twisted:
1.Tang Xianzu being called the Oriental Shakespeare really diminishes his body of work and reinforces the stereotypes that the Eastern Arts are lesser than its white counterparts.
    2. Comparing these two is like apples to oranges, they are both doing completely different styles and techniques.

Partially agreed. I do feel quoting 'Shakespeare' or other similar measures are somehow represents the ignorance of people from a foreign culture (not necessarily a white culture) because people normally spend little time to try to understand and distinguish different things outside their culture.
But this is just so common and it is hard to imagine how would I be able to communicate without these convenient English references. e.g. pancake, dumpling, curry.

To be honest, I do had mind they called him that because he seems like the later representative of Kun Qu opera (like Shakespeare in West but more to drama). But seeing your comment makes more sense perhaps since they really are different (in style, languages, etc.) so yeah, perhaps we need to make distinguishment between those.

"The Peony Pavilion (Chinese: 牡丹亭; pinyin: Mǔdān tíng; Wade-Giles: Mu-tan t'ing), also named The Return of Soul at the Peony Pavilion, is a romantic tragicomedy play written by dramatist Tang Xianzu in 1598, and the plot was drawn from the short story Du Liniang Revives For Love. It depictes a love story between Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei, overcomes all difficulties, transcending time and space, life and death, and finally get together. Different from the short story, in Tang' s play, it is a dynamic integration of the legendary and the reality in Ming Dynasty. Scenes of love in dreams, Du Liniang's revival, or any supernatural element seem absurd in play, but it reflects the sprout of humanism, through protagonists' strong desire and unremitting pursuit of free love, and uncovers the degeneracy of the society under feudalism at that time.

It is totally playful. The singer is playing a teenage girl bored out of her mind during schooling and having an intense bout of feeling 'real life is elsewhere'. She compares herself to flowers blooming furiously inside of decrepit buildings (comparing her elderly boring teachers to decrepit buildings lol). The song goes on to describe what she imagines bustling real life to be, and the singer mimes rowing a boat with her fan at one point. Later 'real life' is going to slap the girl and her love interest in the face and the contrast is really acute against this early naivete. The singer does two things at once, both playing the character of the girl and adding a knowing layer for the audience who knows where the story is going.
