Since it's a review I would have like to see it in action and hear what you think of the machine then. What I watch was an honest review of the apparent built quality, which is somewhat helpful. We just need Part 2 of "I tested the 4040". Thx for the video
Love mine. I upgraded from the Genmitsu 3018. Put on the makita router and made a T-track spoil board. I don't use the software supplied by Sainsmart. I use Fusion, Easel, Lightburn. You do have to use a computer to operate, but they will be coming out with an offline controller.
Thanks for a straightforward review. Appreciate it. Have a good day from Australia.
A big shoutout to Jerry Knapp at 3DHP who pointed out that I had put my spoilboard on upside down!! Thanks for the correction Jerry! I will make that adjustment! The bolts should be countersunk! @3DHP
I have this CNC and a couple of observations that are not covered anywhere need to be mentioned.
First those small metal plate clamp down items, like them or not, are included but the instructions don’t tell you how to use them. Like this review demonstrates without prior experience many people will assemble the hold downs in correctly. All the pieces are included but the threaded post with wing nut, and washer go through the slot of the plate into the spoil board threaded inserts. A flat head bolt threads into the threaded hole and acts as a Jack against the table to control the angle of the plate.
The 2nd thing to mention is the off line controller for this machine is more than a simple cheap off line control, like 3018 CNC’s come with. The connection has 12 pins not 8 like cheaper CNC machines use. Many additional features, well worth having.
Thank you! I appreciate that, since you've got much more experience with this particular machine!
Thanks for the quality, objective info, I’m looking to potentially buy this on a Black Friday deal.
If you’re looking for a good starter CNC, or something good for engraving and small projects, it gets my thumbs up. Of course, it’s not gonna be useful for large build or projects.
I started my CNC journey on their 3018-Prover model. I then upgraded the size to a 3030 and bought the laser attachment. Their customer service is great and might take a few days to get back but had no problems replacing parts if there was an issue for free. Overall, I still use it for small laser needs as I have upgraded to a Stepcraft M1000 with an Automatic Tool Changer with vacuum table. Anyways, great channel I also learned from your clock video.
Thank you for the support and input!!
Did you tried to mill aluminium? I'm want to 3030 also but I'm not sure. Please help
I owned a 4030 before buying my Onefinity Woodworker X50. The Genmitsu is the perfect entry drug to the world of CNC. Great machine other than the spindle, upgraded to a Makita and all was good. I did have a problem with the y axis, great customer support fixed it with a new cable.
You’re the second person that’s mentioned the spindle being underwhelming. That’s a good thing to note if I do a follow up video.
I leaning towards the 4030 over the 4040 but why is it smaller and $400 more?
Why is the 4030 smaller and more expensive?
I bought one and upgraded it with a 800 watt liquid cooled spindle, So much better now than the standard setup. And handles much larger bits with no problems or deflection.
Where did you source this upgrade?
I have a 4040 and the only complaint I had was the supplied spindle. I upgraded to a 800 watt with a VFD and this machine does a fantastic job.
Thanks for the input. I'm glad you weighed in. My experience is limited with it, so I like hearing from someone who's used it longer.
Hi Jim ! I’m looking for a spindle upgrade. according to your experience, would you go for a 1,5 kW spindle or 0,8 kW are more than enough for wood and occasionally aluminum? Thx
@@massimilianocomi5574 A lot depends on the strength of your machine. For example my x axis is not strong enough to use 1/4 " tools. I get a lot of chatter when a 1/4" bit gets into the corners and it ruins the piece. My 800kw spindle weighs about 7 lbs. and that a lit of extra weight for the x axis to support, the 1.5kw may be heavier. The 800kw spindle has more power that I can use, given the weakness of a small cnc machine. The 800kw is just over 1 hp and that's a lot of power for a small machine. I hope this helps and good luck. Let me know what you decide and how it works out.
Could dimensional spacers be installed onto the corners to raise the Z axis? With a project Im wanting to work on I need approximately 5” of clearance.
Thanks for the review!
I don't see why you couldn't, but I've not tried, so I don't know.
Thank you very much! I watched this video before I bought mine and I'm very happy with it except the spindle, it's only good for little jobs.
I agree
I have just ordered the Genmitsu 4040 reno CNC, And ordered also the control offline panel, but! love if you have any
recommendation of a add-on Router, to give it a little more power, there are mid priced one, inside of £60 or up to £100
would appreciate your view on this! Awesome info review video🔥🔥🔥🔥👍👍
Wish I could. I use my Onefinity more than this Genmitsu, so I haven't really performed many upgrades on this one.
I have this one too. I bought it with the spindle mount upgrade for my Makita router. Works great!
I’m hearing that the spindle has a lot to be desired. Glad to hear the good reviews from folks.
Looks good for a beginner like me. Affordable
This looks good for a beginner like myself who’s looking to get a cnc router to learn on, what thickness material can this handle, that is for the review
It should be able to handle pretty much any thickness, as you'll be making several passes. That may depend more on the sizes of the bits used than the cnc itself.
Hi! Do you think it is possible to make small detailed pieces such as a 75mm height chess knight with the rotary axis? Thanks.
I would think that would be possible, but never tried it, so I’m not the expert in that area.
Hey guys, I have a PROVerXL 4030 and I’m running UGS as my G-code sender. I’m keep getting an error code of “(Alarm 1) hard limit has been triggered.” But it happens when in the middle of a project when my spindle isn’t anywhere needs any of the limit switches. Anyone have experiences with this?
Not me.
Would this cnc with supplied spindle cut through 1/4 inch Baltic plywood
I wouldn’t think that would be a problem.
To use in your shop get the controller attachment and save your NC files to SD card from your PC the run the machine in your shop from the controller.
Thank you.
I think the spoil board is upside down?
You're correct. Someone else pointed that out. Good eye.
Will this machine be anygood carving acrylic?
Not sure. Never tried.
Does it come with the router mounting bracket? My genmitsu 3040 did, but it was more expensive. The spindle it comes with is very underpowered.
Not to my knowledge.
Thank you very much for this review. I'm just looking for one of these for my home. Tell me what you would take in the budget up to $ 1500
This CNC retails for around $650 (haven't checked costs lately). Once you buy a few different bits, downcut, vbits, etc, you could be in the $700-750 range. Then you have to consider design software. I use VCarve Pro, but it's not cheap. I'd recommend starting with Easel and seeing if that meets your needs. It's a reasonable monthly subscription. That should keep you under $1500 easily, then you can grow as you start making money to reinvest.
I use Inkscape for designing. Will this work on this CNC? If you wanted a longer board can you move your board & stat from a new X spot? I'm 71 & really new at this. Thanks @@SothpawDesigns
Is there a reason you've mounted your spoil boards upside down?
Brain fart.....
could it cut 3/8 plywood?
I haven’t tried that thick, but I’d think you could with shallow passes.
They say on it's specs it's still based on grbl so it should work on any software (eg Candle) that supports grbl. That would be just a matter of adding BT module on TX/RX pins on main board to remove wires and drive it from phone / tablet / PC with BT support (there are many grbl / gcode senders on android that support HC05/HC06 modules). I've done that for my laser and custom built cnc, now I need only power supply and tablet in around ~5m from hardware devices.
For 4040 from review, I'd say that 775 spindle is not best, it has 5mm shaft which is not really sturdy as it should be for cnc, other than that is look promising for really good entry level cnc.
Hi
Is 4030 better than this one ?
Not sure. I've never used a 4030, so I don't want to speak on it.
Im interested in starting up with cnc and so far my biggest concern would be using it with a Mac, I have been an Apple user since 1980 and have used PCs at work but will never own one myself, is there any chance this works with the Mac?
I don't have either of my CNCs connected directly to my computer. I simply design my projects with my computer, then download the G code to a jump drive and plug into my CNCs. So you can design using a Mac, assuming that the cnc software you're using is compatible with a Mac. There are some that are, some that aren't .
I'm glad i came across your video it was very informative and I am just starting my CNC journey. I am trying to decide on a Sainsmart or the Longmill MK2
I actually really like this model, as a small hobbyist CNC. I don't have any experience with a Longmill. Appreciate the support.
I suggest you read carefully the warranty for the Longmill. You assemble the CNC and they will NOT take it back.
Does it work with lightburn??
Never tried.
I was considering this machine but good to know about the missing controller and the Z-probe plug in area. I would have laptop to use but a controller is much better.
I actually just found out that there is a controller for it, and I bought it, but haven't set it up yet. So keep that in mind as well.
What did you do with that unit?
I still have it. Don't use it much because I have my Onefinity, but it was interesting to test out.
you know your spoil board is upside down, the other way puts the threaded inserts deeper below surface. so if "shit happens" it give you a bit more response time before you break the bit..
Yup, you're right. I realized that after I'd finished the video..... oops...
Great review, buddy. 😃
Thanks
$650 and it uses ball screws, not too bad. Time will tell if it holds up but it looks well made. It didn't take 12 hours to assemble like others do.
Lead screws,not Ball screws.
@@3DHP correct. I think I referred to ball screws one time, but it uses lead screws.
It uses lead screws, which I think are slightly different than ball screws, but it is a higher quality build for the size and price point. I'm interested to see how it holds up.
@@SothpawDesignsHow is it holding up looking to buy one
@@mikehurst9880 Holding up well. I don't use it as much as my Onefinity, so it's not going full time.
have you tryd the off line control module?
I have not. I'll look into it.
Your spoil board is installed upside down. The bolts that hold it down are recessed.
You're right. A couple of people have pointed that out. Appreciate it.
It was more a review of the parts. I expected you to show it in use and give your thoughts on what it could do.
I’ve gotten that comment a couple of times. Thanks for the input. It’s appreciated and I’ll improve.
Very informative and I like the info, I just have that one issue odf your negative comment about the machine that isn't the machines fault.
No, it’s not the machine’s fault, but for other people who have the same or similar circumstances as me, this could be a potential issue, so I mention it.
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
For a couple years now I have been wanting to get start with CNC. But I have been fearful, I have no CNC training. Is this beginner friendly? Is the software beginner friendly? I would really like to get started.
Learning the software is generally pretty easy, but I have a background in multimedia, so that helps. If you can design the shapes and items in your software, that helps.
I have various configurations of cnc routers, does anyone need them?
Im interesting in buying this machine, my question would be the software, does it come with it ? Or do i have to buy it separately and do you know any good softwares for beginners?
It has its own, but I prefer using VCarve Pro. Easel is a good beginner software though.
Hi 👋, I am sort of new to your work shop, I have been looking 👀 at other 3D and CNC territorials, I think about buying a CNC / 3D laser carving machine, is it best to have 2 separate machines, or is there any one that makes a all in one, just changing the head , or do they need to be separates , Great Territorial I look forward to your next project, play safe, PHIL FROM THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOULIN FRANCE.
That's a good question. Now that I have the Genmitsu, I will probably use it for smaller projects and engraving, then use my larger CNC for cutting out larger items and batching multiple projects. But in my opinion, if you have a larger CNC, like the Onefinity, you can also do small projects on it.
Now that I also have a laser engraver, I prefer to have a separate laser and CNC, because I can cut on my CNC at the same time that I'm engraving on my laser.
@@SothpawDesigns hi 👋 thank you for reply, and info. Phil from the moulin France
Good job
I just got one and I'm excited about all the upgrades, I was a little disappointed on reviews on aluminum cutting even with the Makita router
15.7 inches? Thats a nice mix of systems right there haha
Watched entire video waiting for you to put it to actual use. Want to se some results.
You’re right
Good evening
your spoil- board is wrongly mounted ! you need to flip it so the your top will became the bottom - then the mounting screws heads will in their recession and the clamps will not pull out the inserts when you tighten them .
Yup, you're right. Someone else also pointed that out. Thanks!! That's the fun of youtube. All of my messups are there for the world to see. 😂
I’m sorry but @4.54 you are wrong it can be plugged into a laptop. (Or you didn’t explain properly) p
Thanks. I’ll research that.
I state that it must be plugged into a computer. Is that incorrect?
The fact that you say you not having a laptop is a reason for anevlgative comment towards the machine baffles me. It's your fault you don't have a laptop and in fact you actually say that you can't just plug it into a laptop. But that isn't true, you just a laptop in the first place and it has to be capable of running that software. I don't mean to sound rude, but that was an immediate turnoff for me. I'm going to finish the video, because you are very informative, but.......
I don’t know why it baffles you. You’re an adult, and capable of determining if the laptop issue is a deal breaker for you. It was an issue for me, so I mentioned it. I put information out there so people can make their own decisions.
A lot of systems allow for a raspberry pi which in turns allows for remote cloud access. This video and him saying you need a laptop is why I might being going with foxalien now. This is good information to know. You’re a child.
Can it work on hard wood too?
Yes. I mainly use it for engraving, and don't use it much for cutting out projects.
@@SothpawDesigns I want to use it for inlay cutting boards.
@@Chris-vc1dh I would think that would be a good fit.
