A couple of fun facts that Boylan leaves out: The temple where the Black Templars chose to make their stand was the very first temple constructed on the planet of Armageddon, which is why it's considered the holiest ground on the planet, and why making a stand there is such a huge symbol. Grimaldus was buried in rubble when the temple collapsed, and when he emerged, he was dragging behind him a bunch of rescued Imperial holy relics from the temple, which in turn further cemented him as a symbol, a hero.

About "dumb decision" made by titan gunner. It isn't shown here, but in original story the crew has fought many days without sleep or rest, so they were beyond exhausted (and probably pumped with stimulants in order to keep fighting). So that pilot probably was unable to think straight at that moment.

Plus, they had Godbreaker in their face, shelling the hell out of them. They already had damage done, which is why they were manually firing, and not simply supporting Zahar as she does it. He may have been able to wait, probably should have, knowing that the plasma core was overheating badly, but even Zahar knew that they had only one shot at it. Emperor class Titans aren't exactly swift on their feet, so running off was not an option.

Warhounds are 14m tall and owned by the Legio Titanica. They are the smallest titans used for their speed and maneuverability to avoid enemy fire and typically fight in packs.
Castaferrum Pattern (most common) Dreadnoughts are 3.4m tall and owned by an Astartes chapter. Used to keep space marines who suffered mortal injuries on life support, albeit life support inside a walking tank. But due to their rarity, only heroes of the imperium will be interred inside the central casket (can be replaced with a new one when the pilot has died so that the dreadnought can be reused).

@@glandhound Ok. So consider someone who's career military, because of their specialist training, the way they think and act could seem "odd" to a civilian. So take that to the extreme of the Astartes. From childhood they are mentally and physically conditioned, augmented and genetically enhanced with abilities beyond any baseline human. I would say they are not "autistic" but refined for a very specific purpose, so they would too find us "odd".
      1. The 7th Legion have always been stoic and taciturn from the start, out of necessity as the recruits had to be able to withstand implantation that was painful even by Astartes standards.
      2. The 9th Legion's geneseed quirk allowed recruits to be picked from mutant humans. Also they have a hyperactive Omophagea which allows them to quickly learn by drinking the blood and eating flesh of friends and foes. Unfortunately they quickly gained a reputation as cannibalistic berserkers. It was only after being reunited with Sanguinus that they would find balance through embracing the best of humanities virtues; art, sculpture, music, philosophy, debate etc. The likes of the Flesh Tearers could be said to have regressed to their old ways.
      3. The 13th Legion's geneseed quirk manifested in high trait orderliness and respect for authority. This was useful at their founding when recruiting from newly conquered tribes on Terra.
Guilliman trained them to think clearly before acting. Finding balance between theoretical ideas and practical experience.
4.Tbh the Space wolves for the most part seem to be some of the more well adjusted Astartes. The banter, boasting, insults and (relatively) playful punches in the face help keep their egos in check. While the ritualistic importance of remembering and retelling of the sagas, many flagons of Mjod and plates of curried goat all help the process of dealing with the loss of fallen brothers.

    A few things to note.
First, yes, you were right on the money with your assessment that Astartes are emotionally stunted and have issues with both empathy and self reflection. It is trained, brainwashed and possibly surgically and genetically altered outbof them, in order to create superior warriors. They aren't immune to emotions, which is a big reason why Chaplains and Reclusiarchs exist, but they have difficulty grasping the idea that trauma does get to them, and to what degree. Related to this is that it's common practice to put ancient dreadnoughts into stasis when not ready to fight or giving advice, as the centuries of PTSD and the trauma of being confined to a life supporting coffin can drive them mad if they don't have something to keep them occupied. The process of becoming an Astartes grants superhuman resilience and strength, and lessened fear, but robs them of humanity and empathy. Grimaldus starting to clutch at some of it, even trying to converse with Andrej shows that he has regained some of it through his experience at Helsreach, which is frankly amazing character growth, considering that he began thinking that his assignment there was a worthless death, and him being petulant and moody, even needlessly sadistic.
The exchange with Sindel was interesting for a few reaons. One, he doesn't bow because, as Reclusiarchs, he is something of a bishop in Astartes terms. He is roughly close in heirarchy to Sundel's place as Prioress. Second, as you correctly judged, the lack of empathy plays a big role here. They came in almost expecting to be heartily welcomed, overlooking the fact that they just rocked up without permission, right at the last moment. This is made worse by the fact that the Sororitas are essentially nuns with guns, who wondered why the hell they weren't around when the rest of the district was attacked if they cared so much about the sacred places of the world, and now suddenly changed their minds. Sindel made a pretty decent guess by insinuating that some Astartes would have sacrificed all for the Imperium's ideals, then there are those, like the Black Templars, who cared only about glory, but she did add that both extremes are Astartes, subtly suggesting that perhaps they can still yet change that. The eyes thing is weird, but I take it to mean that both Zahar and Sindel saw a certain kindness and beauty in the eyes of what is usually a cold and heartless breed of superhuman, both his vulnerability that he hides in his mask and his redeeming trait that could be tapped into to make him more than just another Astartes soldier. The anointment is very much like an older style, where a priest or priestess would merely touch the oil or holy water to the brow of the one being anointed, a gentle gesture, but one that contrasts nicely with the harshness of battle. Interestingly enough too, when Sindel says that it brings clarity to the lost and doubting, he only refutes being lost, and he responds to the statement that he can walk without guilt in a way that suggests that he has had guilt. He saw himself as beneath Mordred and wanted to fill those shoes perfectly, wracked with doubt and guilt about having to do so and whether or not he even could. This lead to darkness and brooding, and even less emotional maturity than the typical Astartes levels, but twice now, he had people saying that he had something beautiful in his spirit, and on several occasions, he has had others put faith in him, so he obviously had some worthiness and good to offer, he just needed to find his place and do it his way.
As for the smaller walker, that was a Warhound Titan, a small (By Titan standards) unit, designed to either offer support against standard armour or to scout and harass bigger Titan units in support of their own larger Titans. The two mechs it ran between are Warlord Titans, medium sized Titans with heavy weaponry, all dwarfed by Zahar's Emperor class Titan. It really shows how big Godbreaker, the Ork super Titan was, when Stormherald, which normally towered over even the Ork Gargants, was smaller than it by a bit.
Bayard, the Emperor's Champion, showed typical headstrong attitude of those who take on the role. It's a good highlight to show that Grimaldus was finally starting to grow up, dismissing his condescension of the Imperial Guard, lecturing him on how the Imperium was born in moments like that, when all walks of humanity stood together, and then accepting him saying that he spoke against his ascension.
The one with the chainsword was Bastilan, the sergeant, who got killed while distracted by Priamus hesitating in picking up the Black Sword.
It was interesting that they all died in reflections of their traits. Kador was getting older, and was ambushed. Bayard was cocky, typical of Emperor's Champions, who are revered as being holy and often let that get to their heads, and he was killed by a spear, not an Ork Nob or champion of any kind. Bastilan was inspiring, yet not a leader, a middle ground warrior, and got killed because he was focussed on trying to inspire action in Priamus. Nerovar was the meeker one, yet noted to be quietly resilient, and died valiantly, pulling himself down the spear that impaled him, his last action being to kill the one who impaled him with his knife. Priamus, the hotshot, who wanted to be known for his glory, was panicking, driven to his knees and burned alive by a Burna jet to the back, an irony, given his mockery of Kador being shot in the back. Arterion died back to back with Grimaldus, still holding his standard, after turning around to say goodbye to him, even at the end, setting himself aside for Grimaldus. It's wonderfully poetic, really.
The choice of the temple was very important and symbolic. It's one of the first temples built there, and also it shows that he saw his potential sacrifice as being able to be one of martyrdom for the Imperium's ideals, a far cry from where he started, bemoaning the fact that he couldn't earn his worth by accruing personal glory.
The woman Andrej wanted to marry, by the way was Captain Domoska, the one he was with at D16 West. It's kinda sad that the story implies that she died, and he never got his happily ever after (As much as any Guardsman ever could). He did get promoted, and it was either through attrition or because Grimaldus told of his good deeds. Maybe both.
The end definitely shows that despite their reputation, Astartes can have survivor's guilt, as he apologised for being alive when his brothers aren't. They died so that he can return a wiser man and fulfil his duty as Reclusiarch.
His speech was an excellent reflection of how he finally understood the lessons that were to be taught, that it's not about one being more glorious than another, instead all are equal if they do their bit to bring illumination to the bleak darkness of the universe they live in. Kinda fitting that he begins the story by stating that he wears the blackest of the black, and ends by saying that those who bring the light to darkness are to be honoured and respected, and that being at Helsreach taught him that.
Then there's the end line, such a perfect line. "Hero of Helsreach, the crowd cheers. As if there was only one"

În regards to the super weapon trope,
in the book itself that part had been solved far before the last stand in the cathedral district as the conversation between Grimaldus and Jurisian happened way before that moment.
Grimaldus ordered Jurisian to not even attempt to go to Helsreach and go directly to the front at the Hemlock river that was fairing much better.
Only after Princeps Zaha died and the rest of the Titan legion fucked off of the city they met with Jurisian and of course instantly accused him of being a heretek for stealing their stuff.
Jurisian pretty much just black mailed the mechanicus guys to go back to Helsreach and continue fighting in exchange of surrending the ordinatus to them once they are done.
The battle against the Mega Gargant was also much different. The Titans distracted it by shooting, shining lights and blasting horns at it while running circles around it with the remaining tank regiments flanking the gargant and a part of the orks attacking, their plan was to lure the gargant out of the city to give Jurisian a better chance of killing it without taking half the remains of the city with him

the thing is from what is pointed out above is space marines were trained and surgically enhanced to not have hesitations like normal humans, they are expected to look and anaylsis the battle and be immediately able to find the best response to any situation at a faster speed then normal commanders. A reduced speed not in the standard of the chapters would definitely be questioned and any promotion to a leadership role would be declined or not without some serious trials like Helsreach for grimaldus

"The eye thing is sort of weird." - I think you're missing out on something very important there. The character is a Chaplain, a High Reclusiarch of the BLACK TEMPLARS. A chapter that has been crusading for 10,000 years in order to xenocide & purge the heretic. He wears as Skull Helm, which is designed to intimidate and threaten; he's supposed to be stoic. Hard. Unfeeling. But we realize, through the series, that he's very, very human. *Vulnerable.*
That is why that line is so significant. She's not commenting on him having aesthetically pleasing eyes. She's saying "You're human." Something, for reference, most Sisters of Battle believe Astartes not to be. So that line? From someone so prestigious within the Sisterhood? That's VERY significant. You're not a huge lore nerd like I am, which is why you missed it. But that was not a weird line. It was VERY powerful and a total badass move from her.
She's basically saying *"I recognize you as being worthy of my presence."* The fact that she even manages to get him to bow in front of her shows how much control she has of the situation.

Regarding the choice of how and where to die (which is extremely important for Grimaldus for very petty reasons) it ties back to the annihilation of the chapter who's battle barge crashed in the first days of the battle (where Priamus were knocked out). In the book Grimaldus have a couple of flash backs to the majesty and glory of their last stand and wish something similar for himself
Grimaldus state of mind and the question of if he's the right choice as Reclusiarch or not is a prominent theme in in the book but hard to adopt to film. That's why the short exchange between Grimaldus and Bayard seems out of place when in fact, it is Bayard admitting he was wrong and that Grimaldus prover him wrong

The Forge Master meeting the fleeing elements of Invigilata and having them follow him into the Hive to fight the Ork Gargant - and a slight redemption for one of their character in him giving his life so that Jurisien gets the shot.
The pages of just fallen Templars and how they died and if their gene-seed has been collected or not.
The full final battle at the end with all 27 Surviving Templars charging in blindly to battle, Grimaldus fighting atop a Baneblade and not a stop in the action for them to reform inside the temple but them to just be pushed back and back further inside under the weight of numbers (Grimaldus laughing the entire way)

    Hail Brothers.
The Templars have always had a reputation of smite first and let the Emperor sort them out.

    For Dorn and the Emperor.
For the honour of the VIIth.
The Last Wall shall never fall.
    Gloria in excelsis Terra.
    1. Why would you expect baseline human responses from transhuman super soldiers. Astartes might seem awkward almost autistic as to they have little need of empathy and other fuzzy thinking , as to them such things are irrelevant to their primary function of finding the enemies of the Imperium and fucking their shit up in the most expedient way possible.
It's the price to paid for specialisation?
Tbh wolves for the most part seem to be some of the more well adjusted Astartes. The banter, boasting, insults and (relatively) playful punches in the face help keep their egos in check. While the ritualistic importance of remembering and retelling of the sagas, many flagons of Mjod and plates of curried goat all help the process of dealing with the loss of fallen brothers.
    2. Titan is a Warhound class scout titan.
    3. After Helsreach, Grimaldus got a retinue of servitors to carry pieces of the fallen temple as relics.
    4. If Oberon had been fully crewed and operational it would have immediately turned the tide as it is virtually a mobile fortress that had horrendously powerful offensive and defensive capabilities before even counting the Starfury cannon which is usually found on Imperial navy capital ships.

The thing about never having doubt varies from chapter/legion to chapter/legion. The Black Templars (and most other Dorne based chapters) are particularly up their own butts with this kind of thing.
The smaller walkers roaming around the titan are knights. Thier job is to patrol around for threats to the titan that are otherwise below the titan's notice such as smaller walkers, tanks, or infantry teams with heavy weapons.
Your theory on the Astartes' emotional maturity is correct. It's rarely stated in the lore but it is often wondered at by many characters with different ideas and perspectives. It also applies to the primarchs and arguably, though in a different way, the Emporer himself.

While I do love the artistic drawing/animating of Helsreach, there is a fair few story 'adjustments'. The majority are harmless but the Stormherald vs Worldkiller fight is the one that actually bothers me. In short, the bit where Stormherald fires at Worldkiller with its plasma weapon and Worldkiller ripping off Stormheralds head happens within 2 seconds of each other. There's no back and forth arguing. The Princeps is basically dead (again), the entire crew is beyond exhausted and Stormherald is barely functioning. They fire because they feel like theres no time left, and there probably wasn't.
Other 'adjustments' that i'm aware of include: The entire Black Templar force clear the area around the crashed orc ship in ep 1, not just the 5 'stars' who enter the ship.
Grimaldus doesn't talk the Princeps back from the dead, he berates/shouts/swears and hints at her being a heretic, it was anger that brought her back, not memory of a sworn oath.
The Sisters of Battle take no part in the defense of Helsreach, when the Orcs assault the Church they all stay in the Catacombs. They even kill guardsmen trying to go there for medical aid and state any who open the doors to the Catacombs will die, regardless of who/what it is. For obvious reasons i'm glad this one is changed, cause that is some extremely heretical bullshit. That's like soldiers in a COP deciding to *only* defend the Command Bunker when under assault.

A lot of people reacting to the part where the Emperor's Champion tell Grimaldus that "I'm one of the few that spoken against your ascension to reclusiarch." and taken it as an insult toward him. Which I believe isn't the intending purpose. Grimaldus answered "I would of said the same in your shoes" isn't a clap back, but an agreement that he don't think he is right for the job either.
The flashback scene at the start is the hint, showing how Grimaldus is trying to become his former Master who died instead of becoming his own person for the role. A much earlier part where one of his squadmate call him out about "his darkness is spreading to the rest of the crusade" is for this.
TL;DR: It's not an insult, he said that because he cared and don't want Grimaldus to carry that burden when he isn't ready. These people know each other for hundreds of years, so their bonds allowed them to be frank to each other with no hard feeling.

Part of the training and indoctrination a Space Marine goes through does include hypnotherapies and things to affect their mental and emotional states. With the Grey Knights they even erase all their past memories to make it so Daemons have nothing to use against them or tempt them with, because their big focus is fighting Daemons. Exceptions, of course, apply, like with spaceship combat where the walls can stand up firepower that could easily penetrate their armour.

To explain the war machines you see in this:
The small one that was running away from the Ork Gargant was a Warhound Class Titan.
The warhound is the smallest Titan and is usually given to that of newest Principes to help train them in becoming close to the machine as well as give them a machine with less of its own will - every Titan class has its own machine spirit that “literally” wants to take over. Warhound Titans have the least with a more docile one which most Imperial tech has.
Warhound will usually be deployed in pairs. Their duty is to scout the enemy positions and do some quick harassment before pulling back and reporting to their superiors with the larger Titans.
The next two you see are Riever Titans. These Titans are the second biggest and somewhat more your medium class battle line Titan. Their duty is to primarily fight on the battle line. Their slightly tougher to control than a Warhound - I.e. suppress the Machine Spirits urges - however are usually given to those principes of regular or standard skill.
Warlord Titans are the next biggest. These are much larger and covered in a lot more weaponry and have a much more living machine spirit. These are usually give to Veteran Principes to be used in the Battleline/command Titans. This will likely be the biggest Titan you will see in most Titan Battlegroups.
Emperor Class Titans are the Largest and what Zachar was using. These mechs are beyond rare and only found used and within specific Titan legions of honour (most are literally their from their founding over 10,000 years ago). Emperor Class Titans will always be a battle groups command Titan and has the most hardest and alive machine spirit to control. This is why only the most Elite of Principe are ever given command over these Titans.
Also to expand on the whole Machine Spirit thing. You’ll have saw in Episode 10 & 11 that Zachar was getting a set of robotic like images playing in her head. This is the Titans Machine Spirit.
A Titans Machine Spirit is literally a living thing with its own mind - its mind mostly set to one purpose, to fight as that was what it was created for. As such a Principes in assigned to a Titan to take human control over the machine as well as bond/override the machines own will and spirit.
However, the Machines Spirit will begin to also slowly eat away/degrade a Principes mind/life the more it’s bonded with them. A lesser Titans Machine Spirit may take decades to even slowly weaken its pilots willpower and begin somewhat breaking its pilots control over it. However, Titans such as Emperor Class Titans are known for burning through their pilots within a handful of years. Some are so powerful in spirit they will legit go through 2 Principe a year - these machines are usually kept shut down and carefully taken care of as to ease the machines spirit until a time of requirement. At which point they will give it a pilot and hope that the sacrifice of said man will be worth it.

That’s not a dreadnought or an Imperial Knight. Those are Warhound class Titans. The smallest of their kind, also known as “scout Titans” they work with larger class Titan classes to act as scouts and relay information to their larger Titan brothers. However, even by themselves they are still extremely powerful on the battlefield, with heavy lascannons, and can wreck enemy armor and infantry alike. They’re so powerfully compact, two of them guard the entrance to the Emperor’s own throne room.

In the beging that was a Warhound class scouting Titan with 2 Warlord class Battle Titans vs a ork gargant.
The Templars are actually one of the few chapters that do worship the Emperor as a God instead of supremely awesome human like most other Chapters.
Thats how their chapter was founded and why they are on a Eternal Crusade, basically the First Captain of the Imperial Fists Legion Sigismund was disowned by their father Dorn due to him being religiose.
After the Legions where split into chapters he took all those who regarded the Emperor as a god and swore to not rest until all the enemies of mankind are defeated and humanity is in a golden age in hopes to find forgiveness for their transgression against their father and the Emperor

In answer to your question about swords, the standard chain sword has a guard on one side. Think of a chainsaw with a protective cover on the top part of the blade. Then there's the eviserator with both sides exposed making it dangerous to handle but deadlier. There's also Power swords that look like regular swords but are charged with a power field like the black sword we see near the end of this episode. Primus likes to fight with a power sword and most of the others use a chain swords I think.

In regards to the PTSD argument you made.
The issue with Primus's attitude, ist PTSD. Most Astartes view themselves as above humanity. They were hand picked frim a small sect of humanity. Survived grueling trials that killed 90 percent of other applicants. And have been given augmentations and wargear from the emperor's own hand. They are his sword.
They live hundreds of years, are basically immune to sickness. Remember the big tiff between the Salamanders and Grimaldi's? Taking an enemy's head vs the lives of several thousand civilians. Human life is not generally prioritized to the mission.
Thus she's back talking terminators With demigod complexes.

The oath Grimaldus speaks of at the end is a promise to tell Andre’s superiors about how he and a squad of dock workers who where under his command saved the marine squad’s lives on the way to the temple.
As far as space marine toughness goes Grimaldus’ table top mini has special rules that if reduced to zero wounds you are allowed to roll a dice and on a successful roll he survives with 1 wound left

it is a big part of the space marines mentality that they are very much not human anymore and pretty socially awkward . the book actually touches on this when Primus is with that dying girl on the walls , he just cant relate to her and how shes feeling in any way and feels a huge disconnect. Thats probably my biggest criticism of this animation is he left out some very important stuff that was just said in narration and mostly just uses dialog 90% of time

27:15 - If you're a Guardsman and you participated in a battle WITH Space Marines AND Sisters of Battle it's generally acknowledged that you witnessed a religious miracle.
And with chainswords, one side IS the chain-blade and the other side is covered to prevent the wielder from accidentally hitting themselves (or others) with it. However, some fighters DO remove the protective cover to make the chainsword ALL blade.

Andrej didn't get promoted due to attrition, he actually did several noteworthy deeds that came to the attention of Grimauldus, who then passed it on to his commamders, and when an astartes, particularly a reclusiarch puts in a good word for you on your deeds, that's gonna make the high command look upon you very favourably. After all the astartes are often seen as angels of the Emperor.

I think you missed the point at T=17:00. Bayard wasn't firing shots at him. He was reflecting on the change that has occurred in Grimaldus. If you remember at the beginning Grimaldus was in a dark place, and felt that his death would be futile on this planet. Now he has accepted his fate and pushes those around him to have faith in each other, and if they are to die that it wont be in futility but rather that these moments are the moments that define the Imperium. Bayard is recognizing that change and so is Grimaldus.

  • @mortarion9813

Bayard's and Arterion's blades are power swords. They have tech in them that essentially forms a power field around the blades and allows them to pierce through even some of the hardest shit.
And regarding the "nobody will believe you" thing, it would be easily believable actually. Sororitas have been fighting and dying for a considerable time throughout the war for Helsreach now, after all.

Black templars are pretty unique chapter that actually do worship the emperor as a god.
Space marine do actually feel fear, but they deal with it differently.
And Grimaldus did tell Aundrey's superiors, that he saved the Black templars' bacon. Which -as you said- probably went a long way when there are so brutal attrition.
Also i loved how you make a theory about space marine losing the ability to understand humans, which Grimaldus then seemingly confirms later on.

A large aspect of death in battle for space marines always goes back to the Emperor's sacrifice and his fall with his battle with Horus. The Space Marine from the very beginning has been trained and taught to be warriors and defenders of humanity and that to aluminate what the emperor did at the end would be greatest honor and expectation for them. We have to remember this is a religious and warrior culture, as such despite being very shorted sighted, expectations is put more in dying in battle over more logical actions. Albeit this went to the extreme after the Horus Heresy.
People often compare the Imperium to the Soviets and Germans of WWII but really despite having similar appearance, alot of the cultural and doctrines of the Imperium is actually more similar to WWII Imperial Japan.

There are no knights or dreadnaughts; all of them are varying 'forms' of Titans of different scales. The first one with the wolf-like head, the Warhound, is the smallest variant of Titan and is used for pulling targets/reconnaissance/smaller targets. The larger ones are varying Titans (Looks to be Warlord-Class Titans). The Stormherald, the leading Titan that Grimaldos talks to in the vat/liquid tube, runs an Imperator (Emperor)-Class Titan

There are 4 types of Titians, from smallest to largest: Warhound, Reivers, Warlords, and Imperators. The main difference is they get slower better armored and they get more secondary weapon mounts (0, 1, 2, 6 respectively) In Helsreach the book, they where always there. The Princeps commanded a few group but the battles they where fighting where huge, lots of explosions and destruction so think he cut it to soften the work load. Really there are whole sections of the book missing. Like that guy in the beginning that fought with the Black Templars before when Grimaldus was meeting with the officers, he had a whole thing but in this you never see him again. Also there was a side story about a group trapped behind enemy lines and the docks thing was pretty long. Also you get more than 5 Black Templars fighting. But the audiobook is like 12 hours long I think, so you know.
13:00 Well the other side to that is Primus was a bit of a prick.
17:17 that's another example of the book adding more context. That conversation was more of "I didn't think you where the man for the job but you grew into it" it wasn't "you suck". But they where talking for a while.

Also their emotional maturity is greater than the rest. They don’t lie to each other because it would be an insult. Also they challenge each other this way. Use anger and turn it into energy to kill and hate the enemy. Ah one more thing. The Black Templars lore was they recruited the most deadliest and psychopathic murderers for their cause.

  • @MizukiStone44
    @MizukiStone44 2 года назад

Imperial swords come in about five different grades. Normal sharpened metal, mono blades, chain blades, (which are what you'd expect), lathe blades (think mono but with funky space magic materials made with special gravitational conditions that make them stupidly durable despite being mono-blades), and power weapons, which are really, really good. I think they're using Lathe blades because of the lack of power field. Regardless, the weapons they're using are at least one step above chainswords.
Er, to elaborate there is technically one grade higher, Force weapons, which can explode thinking enemy on giving them a papercut, but those are psyker exclusive. Those are functionally a power weapon that doubles as psy-focus/hypodermic needle for their powers, hence letting them instantly kill you on a graze thing. Once they puncture they can effectively set off any sort of nasty psychic ability they want right inside you, defaulting to completely frying whatever passes as your entire nervous system.

The titan is a war hound scout titan, the apothecary is the one with the chain sword you hear and see. The other weapons in the group like the mace grimaldus uses has a power field around the head same with the swords except the blades are sharp down to the molecular level.
