What a Skincare Routine From the Early 1800s Looked Like |Real Historic Recipes|

  • Almonds, oatmeal & cream sound like a good breakfast but this time we're putting it on our skin! I picked out some recipes (or receipts as they used to be called) from the 2 books The Toilette of Health, Beauty, and Fashion (1832) and The Mirror of the Graces, (1813). Let's see what they look like as they are recreated 200 years later. Like always, watch till the end to see images of the actual receipts as they appeared in the original book.

We make hair and face masks every week-- simmer flax seeds & oats in milk or water, steep in dry herbs, strain it through a stocking or old sock, then whip in raw honey and oils. Use more and heavier oils/butters for curly/kinky hair and dry skin, smaller amounts of light oils for straight hair and oily skin.

@@filthypeasant9524 To be fair, a lot of women look the same whether they do this stuff or not. Most of us just do these things because they relax us. The only part of my hair and skin care routine I’d actually look different without is moisturizer, because my skin gets dry and cracked without it. The things that makes women look different, but are actually quite bad for us are makeup, hair products, (gel, smoothing cream, hairspray) and hot tools (blow dryer, curling iron, straitener). A lot of women actually have damaged skin and hair from these products, and instead of not using them and letting their skin and hair heal, they continue to use them to cover up the damage. I’m sure some women are going to get upset and disagree with my comment, because it goes against modern cosmetics, but it’s a fact that modern skin and hair products are designed to make people look good in the moment, not long term.

My only issue is that there were no preservatives used in the skincare at that time and so creams were often quick to go bad and become breeding grounds for bacteria.

Sugar scrubs are wonderful too, and I bet they were used back then. 2 parts sugar to one part oil. Oils that work very well are olive, grape seed, coconut and avocado. Rub a small amount onto damp skin, rinse and pat dry. 😊
How’s the bed working out? Do you have to tightened the ropes regularly? Just curious. The video you posted about it was fascinating. Loved learning where we got the phrase “sleep tight.” 🤓

Thank you for all your living history videos, I especially appreciate how you convey the detail and nuance nonverbally, I learn much better that way. Quick question: What's the procedure for emptying the barrel of water once the bath is over? If you take it out bucket by bucket does it matter the drips on the floor?
