This might sound weird but I like the old stuff
1:22 - The reason for the zoomed out shot was to get the technician on the left's reaction to the self destruct order. From what I understand, originally, he was in the shot, but when it came time to physically add in the audio track to the film, he was cropped out to make room. In the new cut, he was put back in so we could see someone else far more surprised reacting to the order.
Interesting. Makes sense.
The Blue Ray is so much nicer looking. One of the things I have never liked about this movie was how sterile and dull it looked, It is much sharper and the colors more palatable now.
I enjoyed watching the comparison videos. And just to tell you, I am obsessed and love the 2022 version that they have done and it is the best movie for our human adventures to begin.
These comparison videos are so interesting, and you have eyes like a hawk! Thank you for putting these together for us.
One additional change I will mention is that after the V'Ger flyover (in the middle of the movie), the Enterprise turned around in the 2022 version.
I think this was a great idea in theory, but for some reason I found the execution of it somewhat awkward. Rather than looking like the starship turned around while continuing to fly, it looked more like the (digital?) model was just rotated while moving from point A to point B.
It was wonderful, as a ten year old to see this motion picture. As I was a huge fan. I still love it. Which ever cut. Is it not ultimate Star Trek? Wrath of Khan, ultimater! Ha. Excellent
That wasn't the cloud they were in, they were inside the ship itself.
They flew through the cloud and over the ship first, THEN they went inside. Check out some RUclips vids of the official V'ger model.
@@moviefan7854No, the cloud has dissipated at this point. All shots of the Enterprise in this video are inside V’ger, yet many of the video’s descriptions talk about “the cloud”.
The "zoomed in shot" from the 2001 DVD was how it looked at the cinema, They where able to use more of the frame for the new DE 4k & bluray
I can understand your preference for the previous version of the ‘stairs’ appearing, as it has a more hand crafted appearance. The ‘stars’ pulsed and moved at differing speeds and the ‘stairs’ appeared at differing rates, in the new version it is much more smooth and linear.
Thank you for the great comparisons! I have a 4k to buy now!
I am very grateful for this comparison, especially since it has pretty much convinced me NOT to get the 2022 version. And honestly, seeing the changes -- some of which are good, but a lot of which are really out of place or just flat out don't look good -- makes me glad I still have my Blu Ray of the theatrical cut. Anyway, great work!
A great set of videos... :)
WONDERFUL ! Thank you
I am glad they fixed the jackets on the final bridge scene - that was one of my biggest pet peeves with the movie.
Also prefer the older "stairs" effect, the new one looks like a very typical modern CGI/cideogame "spawning in" effect.
Also worth mentioning the inconsistent colour grading on the stairs - in the shot at 4:25, the original ones look more grey and the new ones look blue, but then in the next shot at 4:34 the original ones look more blue (in fact the whole shot does) and the new one looks grey.
Great job!
You keep referring to the V’GER _Entity_ as the “cloud”. It was rather confusing.
The interior shots of the V'Ger vessel (not cloud!) have much better detail now. I thought it looked a bit unimaginative in the 2001 version. However, the stair materialization and V'Ger transformation "orgasm" look better in the 2001 version. The CG version looks a bit gaudy and cartoonish.
Thank You for these.
I've seen all of the comparison videos, all the way through.
Eventually over time, I now believe ST TMP to be the most "Trek" of the Trek films.
I wish we would have spent more time in the TMP universe.
I believe the 2022 version to be superior, to the previous DVD director's cut.
Could it be tinkered with some more?
I see possibilities but, for the time being, I am satisfied.
I'm a little conflicted about this. The 2022 version certainly looks great, but it wasn't supervised or authorised by director Robert Wise (deceased in 2005). Although I'm not crazy about the idea of adding CGI to old movies, the 2001 version was legitimized by the fact that those modern techniques allowed Wise to bring his vision to life. All the changes made in the 2022 version were decided by... who? From an ethical point of view, I'm not sure if I'm totally ok with it.
While it's true we can't know for sure what he'd think, the way it was done is just about the best way anyone could have gone about it. The VFX supervisors from the original director's cut who worked closely with Wise back in 2001 returned for the 4K version. Even the music restoration was handled by Bruce Botnick, who collaborated with original composer Jerry Goldsmith (RIP) on many movies including assisting him with several Star Trek feature films. It's not perfect, but you can feel that they cared.
In some regards, the 2001 is superior in that they tried to make the additions appear like effects that were feasible in 1979. The blu ray is much more about smashing blatant 21st century cgi on top of 20th century film, and at times the disparity completely removes oneself from the film. The 2022 version of the first meeting between Kirk, Spock and McCoy is all kinds of bad, that would have been best left alone.
I prefer the side shot of V'ger right before it "explodes" rather than head-on. Why would they change just that?
I preferred it in the 2001 edition as well; 95% of the changes for the 2022 version were superior, but not that one. It looked weird.
@@spiritof6663 Plus it's the only time in the movie we see the entire length of the ship, so to erase it from "canon" like that is such a weird, arbitrary decision.
Probably to match the image of it on the viewscreen tactical display earlier, which was head-on showing that sorta star shaped silhouette. One could say it goes with the metaphor of a starburst a bit more, and it keeps the overall form of V'Ger more of a mystery. I wonder if it was boarded that way originally and they didn't have time? It's a weird change I agree.
Fantastic comparison series. For the most part they did a really good job restoring the film, and the sound is wonderful.
Some problems I saw: I noticed digital artifacts on my blu ray. If you look at the walls, and especially on Kirk's white shirt, the shadows move/'dance' (it's also on the DVD version. but hardly noticeable). An example is after Ilia heals Chekov, on the left side you'll see it. It's VERY distracting, and just took me out of the movie.
They need to re-do the scene in the Officer's Lounge, because if the nacelles are that low the room would be above the bridge!
The last point (and this is also on the original DVD)- V'ger is headed for Earth, the Enterprise is coming from Earth, and the first part of V'ger we see is the glowing ball end. When V'ger approaches Earth the ball is the last thing we see. So, did V'ger turn around, or did the Enterprise overshoot it's mark and backtrack?

Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you.
Thanks for these. Any chance of getting Theatrical Version Vs Director's cut pt 1 back up from 7 years ago. They might leave it up this time or is there a way I could get it off you
I think the added detail is detrimental to the experience of this film. You can see too much, therefore the mystery is less mysterious. It hinders the imagination.
Can anyone explain who or what "Century Associates" is? They hold the 1979 copyright. Was that a one-off company, possibly for some sort of tax shelter? The newer versions, IIRC, have Paramount copyrights.

2001 is arguably better - the no-name engineer is not the focus of the scene, so there's no real reason to include him
