this is personal for me. i was an acquaintance of the director at age 11, when andromeda strain came out. and my dad got letters from him in the late 70s on "star trek the motion picture" stationary. i still have it, somewhere. he was a really nice guy, and i love all of his movies that i have seen. i really loved STTMP, i was not bothered by the lack of action. i liked that kind of slow, deliberate film. still do. so i think i have to see this final diretors cut. and illwatch at lest some of your podcast here.thanks
I always loved the theatrical version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (as opposed to the special longer version) and felt TMP was the most Star Trek like of all the original crew films. The 2022 Director's edition is easily the best version of TMP. This movie finally looks and sounds amazing as well as the flows perfectly. I didn't think this was ever going to happen and the DVD of The Director's Edition was all we would have. What an incredible interview! I always loved the film but this newest version is a dream come true!
Thank you for this. Life long Star Trek fan, my love for this film really did start to grow with the original Director's DVD release. Was always frustrated that the Director's version didn't get a Blu-ray, but now knowing the story, it was 100% worth the wait for the 4k release. Was fortunate enough to see the theatrical presentation as well. Such a great behind the scenes story.
This version of Star Trek the Motion Picture ..looks great on Blu - Ray ...but absolutely fantastic in 4K ...you have done a great job David...sound and vision are superb...This is what 4K was made for..
I subscribed just because of this one single interview. I talk to David a fair amount (as a distant connection, of course; I have never met him personally, nor is he a close friend) and have never heard a lot of this. Glad you got to have this opportunity.
I never watched the film before because I heard how bad it was, and then I finally decided to give it a shot and watched the 2022 4K Director's Cut and I was flabbergasted because it was such an amazing film to me I couldn't figure out where all the hate came from. Now I know why :-D
This was a very inspiring watch for me. David has the passion of someone who has found their calling and is riding the wave and evolving it to the next level. The amount of dedication that he's kept fueled over the years is admirable. Robert Wise obviously saw a world class steward in this man. Who can argue with that? Great job on this one Heath. 🙏
Incredible interview. I was a little worried it would re-tread the special features of the new set, but this was totally awesome and it made me appreciate the restoration work even more!
Thank you so much for this Heath, I really enjoyed the whole conversation. It's wonderful to see the passion Mr. Fein holds for the Director's Edition, as well as physical media in general. I hope the passion the trek community has for restorative projects can someday lead to the release of DS9 and Voyager on blu-ray, and the only way to show paramount is through our wallets. I do hope this release is commercially extremely successful on physical media. This was the first podcast discussion I watched on your channel, and I definitely will check out more. We definitely need to get you the numbers to support more wonderful interviews like this!
Thank you so much for getting David on your show - also thank you for all the interviews and topics !! The show is fantastic !! I have my copies of the 4K Star Trek 2: wrath of khan and the super deluxe edition you just interviewed David about. I have such fond memories of the motion picture - I was 10 when it came out and my father took me to see the film ! It always seemed incomplete, but also an attempt at bringing a 2001 A Soace Odyssey vibe to a Star Trek story - and it never seemed to get its due . Loved this film - can’t wait to crack open the package !! Thank you again for such an insightful interview Heath !!!
I've always loved the Star Trek "underdogs", The Motion Picture and The Final Frontier. Of course, the other films are great, but both of these were highly entertaining in their own right. Goldsmith's music carried both films beautifully!
What a fantastic interview! Love the mention of Daren Dochterman @45:30. Big fan of his work as well. So glad to own this new version on 4K. I bought both the single and big boxed set versions. Thanks for making this happen, Heath.
I had really meant to avoid the Complete Version, but, Coldurnint, I WANT THE TCHOTCHKES!!!! I must express amusement at Mr Fein's comment about Admiral Kirk changing spacesuits in space; clearly, Admiral Kirk used the Batpole.
Do you think a Final Cut of Star Trek The Final Frontier will ever happen? I cannot imagine it being all the expensive to produce, and with the strike occurring, Paramount could use the content. Similarly, how would you feel about a modern remake of TAS (new visuals but the same audio) with added scenes, or new episodes, featuring the voices of Shatner, Takei, Koenig, and any other surviving cast members? I’m imagining something similar to the two 1960s style Batman movies (Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders and Batman vs. Two-Face).
I feel like if a final cut of V was going to happen, it would have already. I'd be interested in seeing it, though! I really love the Filmation Star Trek series, so I'm not sure I'd want to see it messed with. I wouldn't mind new animation, though! Those two Batman movies you mentioned were a lot of fun.
Shatner said in the past that the studio didn’t think ST5 was salvageable, so they didn’t see a point, but I think with a moderate effects budget, minor reshoots, and maybe some new action bits or a new ending, they could make something that is closer to what Shatner wanted to make, such as the rock monster final battle. That’s fair about TAS, I know Roddenberry disliked how limited the animation was, so I wouldn’t be against the Mike McMahan (Lower Decks) having the opportunity to accurately recreate the animated series with new effects and create a new season or two with the surviving actors (recasting Spock feels weird if you’re bringing back Shatner, but if it could be done respectfully, I would not be too upset…does Adam Nimoy sound like his father?). If the right people were involved, I think it could be fun, but I wouldn’t want it to be a farce, you know?
Wow, this is so interesting! I love a good commentary track, and this video is just as good! I appreciate all the time you take putting these videos together--the editing alone must take hours.
After such a thorough job investigating, questioning, & explaining the offenses, it drives me up the wall seeing him rifle through the vehicle bare handed. With all that Fentenal going around, I wouldn't even touch the door handle without nitrile gloves o
Heath, I don't understand why you don't have more subscribers and comments to your videos in general. Your content is awesome and there's an audience out here for it, much larger than is reflected in your subs.
Thank you! Subscribers are something I'm constantly trying to push for. Only half of the people who watch my channel are subscribed and despite my requests for viewers to subscribe, the growth is very slow. It's literally the single biggest thing someone can do to support the channel, but it seems to be the hardest thing to get a viewer to do. If you've got any suggestions, I'm all ears! I think it's just going to take more people seeing my videos and then engaging with them.
Great interview as always. Although, I have mixed feelings on the director’s cut. Some changes were good, some changes not so much. I think the transporter malfunction scene is far less disturbing in the director’s cut thanks to an overload of new sound effects drowning out the wails and the cutting of Kirk’s line right after the tragedy. I think overall I still prefer the theatrical cut, but I do give serious props to all involved in this project. My ultimate version would be a hybrid of both cuts.
The highlight of 2022 version -- by far -- is the quality of the transfer. So buy it for that alone. Why is the Director god for ST-TMP? Wise was brought in by others for this project; this film was a collaboration , Director's Edition is not a good approach. It undermines all others heavily invested and involved in the project, like Alan Dean Foster and Rodddenberry. I actually think some of he added SPFX "fixes" in 2001/2022 are a bit goofy and immature. Like extra space workmen tumbling around. Not sure why Fein keeps referring to orig. 79 cut as being incomplete. Paramount / Wise would not have released a working, clunky print with million of $ at stake. I even thought the 1991 LaserDisc widescreen version was just fine. And I miss Kirk's "OMG" from the transporter SNAFU.
Related / not related - I finally broke down and bought deep space nine on DVD. All these years I’ve been hoping they remaster it like they did TNG, and that we get a wide screen version like we know is possible from the crowd funded documentary. Alas, I believe I’ve given up hope.
Good stuff. I have to wait until I get the 4K box set (which is on my list), but I'm looking forward to this. I've always defended the theatrical movie as better than people remember and more true to Trek than the sequels.
Ha! It's true. David was well-prepared and had great, thoughtful, detailed answers. The only other similar experience I've had was with Kenneth Johnson: ruclips.net/video/f1zpERzyzwE/видео.html
In addition to physical media, you can watch this movie everywhere you get movies: iTunes, HBO Max, etc. In the interview, Mr. Fein talks about how the Director's Edition has replaced the previous version on many platforms, as Paramount now rightly sees it as the primary version of the movie.
I saw it at the cinema aged 6 and I thought it was OK, but this was probably because of the massive marketing campaign. I spend hours making an Enterprise bridge which you cut out from a cereal packet so I could put my new Kirk and Spock figures (which didn't do much!). When STII:WoK came out it was an amazing film with hardly any marketing!
Took the risk to again the movie again after just barely purchase the bix set. Was kind of piss off. But new one is dolby Atmos and picture much better. Now seing this interview give so much more information. Appreciated.
Greetings from Germany. Wonderful Interview, thanks for that! STMP is the first 4K UHD, because i recently - finaly - got a Playstation 5 aaaaaaand i knew how much work they got into it, even bevor this good Interview :- ) I wish Paramount would finaly get, how im Important it is, to get Shows/Movies from the Future to get it Future-Proof and not on crappy DVD-Versions.... (still hopeing for DEEP SPACE NIN HD/4K)
Good luck trying to buy this, I have spent the last two weeks ordering it from Amazon and Walmart only to get the same run around. It doesn't ship and it turns out nobody actually has it. They take your oder and don't ship it because of "supply chain issues" I don't think there are any copies in the US right now and don't like the way they still let you order it.
I did find a third party seller on Amazon yesterday and now I have a tracking and it is shipped. However I had been orignally trying fulfilled by Amazon and sold and fulfilled by Walmart because these third party seller always use these really slow shipping (rail?) that takes over a week to reach me and I don't want to sit around for two weekends waiting for a package. Hopefully this time I get it. I really enjoyed the first movie and thought it was underrated though I do think some of the approach effects shots of V-ger went on too long. AND, I really wish they had nixed the idea of HIRING MISS UNIVERSE AND THEN SHAVING HER HEAD TO BE BALD!!! Really, couldn't they have given her blue hair or something? They made Chianna look pretty attractive on Farscape like that. They needed that producer who nixed the idea of putting Terry Farrel in ugly forehead ridges and wasting her beauty on Deep Space 9 and instead just brushing on some spots. But to the "odd number movies are bad" click, One and Three are NOT bad, Five however, well that's another story.
When I was a kid growing up back in the 70’s I was always wondering after having Spoke die in Star 💫 Trek II have him come back in Star 💫 Trek III what was up with that?
I’m happy with the original Directors Edition in SD. I personally feel David is going a little bit power crazy on the latest iteration and re-interpreting the content with his own specific, and honestly, ego- entric ideas of what the film should be. I appreciate his work but it just feels like it’s too much.
Sorry, can you be more specific? When you say "box set" are you referring to The Complete Adventure, which has three cuts (theatrical, Director's Edition, Special Longer Version), or the 4K 6-movie set? And when you say "final release" which release are you referring to? The Director's Edition is available in at least 3 physical media editions, plus digital options.
@@CerealAtMidnight sorry for the confusion on my end. Originally I had the DVD version of the directors cut and in terms of length it wasn’t that much longer than the theatrical release. My latest purchase was the 4K single release Star Trek, the motion picture the directors edition, so is that everything that’s included in the complete adventure or is there something additional in that packaging that’s not included in the desk that I have now. It sounds like a lot of the improvements did not necessarily result in a longer running time but I may have that wrong.so in other words what am I missing? That’s included in the complete adventure that I don’t have in the single release 4K directors addition.
Ah! Gotcha. The Director's Edition is 5 minutes longer than the theatrical cut, but it contains roughly 185 shots not in the original theatrical version. The COMPLETE ADVENTURES box set contains the theatrical version, the Director's Edition, and the Special Longer Cut, which runs 145 minutes, plus all the on-disc and physical extras like the poster, cards, and stickers.
@@CerealAtMidnight OK thanks one last question in the special longer cut is that mostly added special effects that increases the run time or is there actual on screen dialogue that’s not in the other two cuts? Originally the complete of the longer cut was that it was very little additional footage, mostly consisting of a longer time in the clouds.
The longer tv version contained a ship exterior shot, with Kirk leaving the ship, where you see the edges of the set, set support rigging, ladders, ect. No set extensions, etc. Really tacky. This is doscussed around 57:00
Haha. I own the original AND "extended TV-cut" on Laserdisc, the original VHS, the double-disc RCA CED videodiscs, the DVD Director's Edition, the BluRay theatrical release, and finally the 4K UHD release. Paramount/Viacom has MORE than made their investment back from me! ....and perversely, I don't consider myself a big fan of this ponderous, pretentious Trek film. Yet still, I have a self filled with this one film. 🙄
The transfer looks incredible and the movie is awesome! I’ve always liked this unique gem
