    The frustrating thing is that nobody wants an A.I. remaster (remake is more accurate). Nobody in the world, not a single person wants it. There's just a few people who tolerate it or don't care, but that doesn't make the process a good thing.

      Ok but at the end of the day it's just a tool and somebody's gonna pioneer it regardless...with the aim to achieve greater and greater results over the years. If the result looks great to a large majority of people then that's a win for the tool.

      I think people often forget their great grandparents and grandparents never went to a theater and saw a movie in 4K resolution. I saw The Empire Strikes Back at one the best theaters in our area when it was released and it never looked as good as the 1080 release. And nobody was hearing a film in Dolby Atmos in the 40s-80s. So, if we can let Ai evolve to give us an even better restoration of a film, there is no harm.

    • @robertt9342
      @robertt9342 День назад +2

      @@nicholasthill7151. I mainly agree, but then it invites criticism otherwise the AI won’t see the revisions necessary to get to the point of amazing and improving results. The pixel peepers are a necessary evil in your scenario.
      I like the use of AI, but I think we are seeing the lack of QC on its implementation. There needs to be more scrutiny in its application to limit the amount of issues where the OPs concern of generative scenes becomes true.

    Fortunately I own all three of the classics on Blu-Ray so that won't be an issue for me. I have also ordered 3 of them on 4k and am happy with the description/reviews you gave. The exception here is Blazing Saddles which I didn't order, Mel Brooks is mostly a miss with me (although I love Young Frankenstein) and while I definitely acknowledge the importance Blazing Saddles has had on comedy and movies at large I just don't find it as funny as most.

    Regarding Terminator, I think with 4K releases, people are focused on some kind of purity though I don’t think it exists. I think during the restoration process all kinds of trade offs and decisions have to be made. When the 4K goes on sale, I will buy it and compare it to the blu-ray.

  • @rcthemouse
    @rcthemouse 2 дня назад +5

    On your comment about no blu-rays included its unfortunate because I do get use out of the blu-ray copy when bringing a specific movie over to a friend's to watch. Lots of friends still don't own 4k players. At least a digital code is included so that works fine for my purposes.

    To me, if it is the BEST-looking version available of the film currently available, even if it is not perfect or could use improvement, that is still the version I want. If a better/improved version happens to come along in the future, then that will then be the best/preferred version.

    Interesting about The Terminator. I've been holding off, waiting for reviews. I'm broadly happy with my current Blu-ray. What about the audio? Is the original sound on there (original gun effects?) If the disc has it, I'm sold! I'd like to get N/NW. I've only got the DVD of that one!
    In the UK, we usually inherited prints in cinemas that had done the rounds in the USA, so it was normal to see scratches and dirt when I was at the cinema. The ring in the top right hand corner and the film stock becoming extremely dirty, along with a sound bump, at a reel change was part of the movie experience. I actually miss that nowadays. Film, like you say, was imperfect!
    The lack of a Blu-ray with these 4Ks is annoying. I'm in a multigenerational household. I have one 4K TV in my room, but the others, including my parents' TV, are only HD and we like to watch films together. The house won't be all-4K for a looong time. My 4K collection started with combo sets before I owned a 4K TV or player. At this point, 4K is sufficiently niche, that I feel Blu-rays are still necessary with 4Ks.

  • @Cinemaniac76
    @Cinemaniac76 2 дня назад +8

    Love your videos, Heath, and I love your love of cinema. However, when it comes to the James Cameron situation and the quality of the Park Road transfers, just because something looks good, doesn't mean it looks right. Imagine if they used this technology on a film like Stagecoach or Vertigo. That, in my mind, would be absolutely criminal. But when it's a film of a slightly newer vintage, such as The Terminator, we seem to be far more accepting of historical revisionism, because, really, that's what this is. It's also worth noting that this 4K release of The Terminator uses the exact same 2K transfer used for the 2013 remastered edition, so most likely there are no details on hand in this 2024 edition that were not also there eleven years ago. That being said, to each their own and all that.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  2 дня назад +3

      I've been critical of several Cameron transfers, just not this one. And since this hasn't shipped to the public yet, you're going entirely on things you've heard from other people. The fact that you're more inclined to agree with negative opinions than my positive one says a lot. We need a lot less of this tribalistic echo chamber and a lot more people thinking for themselves. Most of the people trashing 4K releases are doing it to feel validated and to get clicks and engagement. I'll say it again: no transfer is perfect, but they are rarely the disasters a small group of fans make them out to be. Anyone arguing against this is just trolling.

    • @Cinemaniac76
      @Cinemaniac76 2 дня назад +7

      @@CerealAtMidnight I said there's a difference between good and right. Perfect was never part of the equation. And I'm not stuck in any kind of an echo chamber, so please, don't do me like that. However, I am highly critical of this kind of digital retconning - which is my right as both a consumer and a cinephile. And for the record, I absolutely love 4K. Right now, I'm eagerly awaiting the 4K of Howard Hawks' Scarface, and if more studio titles had been given that kind of a treatment, with more care given to preserving the film as it was originally shown, then we'd all be better off for it. My two cents.

    The reviews of Terminator 4k seem to run contrary to my personal theatrical experience. In theater there was a very clean picture, no grain, very polished but the 4k reviews are saying that there is grain so i guess they tweeked the 4k transfer before sending it out to the factories for pressing. Which is good. I want a respectful preservation. And they also apparently included the mono mix, which for me is super important. I want those original sfx. The "new" ones are horrible. Its better to be given a choice with which sound track you listen to rather than being forced to do atmos or new 5.1 mix

    Once new physical media releases become 4K only discs, I'm cut off. I truly believe 4K is a waste of money. I got suckered into blu-ray because Severin is slowly and gradually giving every single 'Video Nasty' on all the banned movie lists from back then glorious restorations from the original camera negatives. That I couldn't resist. Also when Code Red restored Slave of the Cannibal God and Jungle Holocaust on blu-ray, that was my turning point I accepted blu-ray into my life. I am a VHS and DVD purist. I have a ton of horror movies I know for a FACT will never go beyond the basic DVD format. Also my room is not big enough for even a 50 inch TV, so upgrading in size is not even an option for me. I knew this was coming, the ultimatum of 'upgrade to 4K or be left behind.' Once that happens it's all over, I will sell off my entire movie collection, hit the road and pursue my dream of becoming a big rig truck driver.

You're not supposed to see every little detail in every single movie. And back in the days of movies shot on film, going to soft focus with the picture was intentional and if a digital transfer can't handle that, it's going to ruin the scene.

    Meanwhile a movie like Holiday Inn gets a 4K release and advertised and a Christmas movie when it’s 1. Not a Christmas movie and 2. Does the Controversial thing in the exact context which makes it extremely offensive.
    The first time I watch Holiday Inn, I was shocked. I was in the comfort of my own home and I was looking around to see if anyone could see me watching this. My skin was crawling, I felt uncomfortable.

      I don't think controversy has anything to do with Silver Streak not being on disc. It's available on digital platforms--you can buy it in HD right now on iTunes for $4.99. It probably has more to do with licensing, since it was distributed by 20th Century Fox, now a Disney company. In VFX, we call it pixel-phucking. If you're watching movies on a frame-by-frame basis, you're not watching movies. In motion, the artifacting isn't noticeable enough that the average person is going to go through the trouble of pausing, rewinding and advancing every frame to catch that. That's not in defense of using AI algorithms to upscale and "clean up" your movies. That's just a fact of being a viewer. I'd say something like TRUE LIES is a different story because, even in motion, the DNR and sharpening is off-putting. I don't think that's the case here with TERMINATOR. At the end of the day, the 2013 remaster still exists.

    I haven't seen "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" yet.
    I'm not a huge Hitchcock fan but "North by Northwest" is one of his top tier works, IMO. I'd put it up there with "Rear Window" and maybe "Rope."
    I appreciate the transgressiveness of "Blazing Saddles" but I'm actually not a fan of the movie. Mel Brooks is usually just a little too... silly & unfocused for me. Most of his comedies are just using the setting as a backdrop for various schtick. I prefer the ones where the plot is a little more integral, like "The Producers" or "To Be or Not to Be."
    "The Terminator" is one of my all-time favorites. It's just subtle enough that it feels like this could all really be happening. Schwarzenegger feels like a genuine machine and I love the wild-eyed madness of Michael Biehn.
    I don't have a 4K player or a TV large enough to spot any artifacting or anything like that. But I could tell that the previous blu-ray of "The Terminator" does employ some revisionist color grading. There's a definite teal push, which is especially evident when you look at the flourescent lights and wood veneers in the police station. I don't mind it. It fits with the overall color palette of the film and seems to have been done quite purposefully. I've seen far more careless examples of this where objects that aren't supposed to be blue definitely look kinda blue. (Look at the Genesis cave in the 2009 blu-ray of "Star Trek II." The plants don't have the kind of vibrant green that they had in the old 2000 DVD.)

Ignore these people, they are trying to ruin our happiness and enjoyment. Most of us can only afford a 40 inch TV with a blu-ray player and see no value in 4K/UHD resolution. We still buy basic DVD's because for some movies, they are only available on DVD.

I mainly watch movies ripped from my computer, but I also have one 4k player in the living room to watch 4k discs with DolbyVision. Bought the 4k player about a year ago. If you don't have the money to upgrade yet, try not to have FOMO. I would recommend to get bluray over DVD when they're available, though. Compared to 4k UHD bluray, standard bluray is inexpensive. I will say for me, that watching 4k movies on the OLED is an immersive experience. I just wish there wasn't so much negativity about it. Don't worry about 4k until you buy a better TV. If that day never comes, just stick with Bluray.
