    Heath,
I have seen you struggling these past few videos and I just want to let you know that there are plenty of us out here that appreciate your videos and particularly your passion. I don't always comment and I struggle to articulate how much this channel means to me but ill try.
Watching movies is my main hobby and up until a few years ago I was just watching the mainstream stuff. Your passion for film has opened me up to SO MANY different genres and eras of film. Movies I would have never heard about. I'd never watched a noir film prior to finding you channel. I had written off black & white films like so many other young people thinking there was nothing to gain from watching "old movies". Now I can't get enough.
My journey right now has lead me to Vincent Price and all the classic horror movies he stared in (these are great!). Another actor that wasn't on my radar and again I thank you for your Icons of Horror video.
I've been watching all your new release videos and to be honest I watch those 30 minute videos just to hear the 2 minutes where you actually talk about the movies themselves. I wish there was more push to here you talk movies but apparently people just want to see what's coming out that week....kind of a bummer. I don't blame you for doing that.
Regarding more recent movies, you put me onto Horizon Part 1 and The Bikeriders and both of those are amazing. Horizon feels so epic and brutal and real. If I had listened to the other morons on RUclips I would have never experienced that film. That example right there has really showed me that movie reviews, for me, are useless. If Horizon isn't regarded as great by the people than I don't trust the people anymore.

Came to your channel years back now, drawn in by the pop culture in analogue tag and got to say watching you go movie hunting was the joy backed up by substance of the reviews and descriptions. Getting movies sent to you must have seemed like the dream however you have definitely become noticeably more dour (good scottish word) and jaded over the years. Got to find your happiness again, my tuppence worth is to limit the "look at these movies I got sent" videos, pick the ones you want to highlight and share as they mean something to you and you will find those who do appreciate you and your insights shall be there for you. Keep up the good work, you deserve success for the work you put in so dont let those haters get you down Its too easy to be the troll, the talent is with the creator and there are plenty of us who appreciate you and what you do.

    Heath,
I always appreciate the honesty and how up front you are with your audience. As far as my opinion, I watch your videos about discs to hear about film. When you have all those new releases, I can't wait to hear what you have to say. Packaging is cool, but I watch those videos to find new films that I might not have heard about. I'm all about expanding my horizons in film. A great example, I don't know if I saw it in your video or someone else's. But I believe it was yours. A Bittersweet Life from Umbrella, I bought and watched that film. I was really surprised and blown away by it. I would've probably never known about it without the coverage I saw. So thank you and keep up the great work. You're a special one.

  • @WickedRegal

I hope you continue to make the content that you do because I just came across your stuff and subscribed.
The problem with the internet, and society as a whole right now, is instead of people just moving past things they don't like and focus on what they like themselves... they instead feel the need to waste their time in their angry little bubble they have made for themselves purposely watching/reading things they don't like just to blast the individual who made it. There are way too many self righteous people nowadays who like to hide behind keyboards.
At the end of the day (and it is tough to do) it really does come down to making content on things you enjoy and are passionate about and stay true to that, knowing you are never going to please every person that comes across your content. If you make a video and you're happy with it and what you shared then focus on that rather than focusing on negative jerks. No one is making them watch. No one is making them comment. Their toxicity is on them, not you.

I'll admit I love the IP however I love finding those movies that offer more. I generally ignore the critics but due to your track record I take your opinions on a movie into account to my movie choices. Missed the bikeriders at the cinemas but picked up the disc based on your review, loved it (as did my daughter who was in the room and got hooked). Horizon is another example this year, saw it at the cinema.
Local cinema has akira kurasawa series atm. Last night saw red beard. Omg what a masterpiece, the cinematography, the challenging story and the performances. 3 hr movie, would have happily sat there for another hr. 3 films so far and my tickets at purchased until the end. Every Tuesday night through to the 1st week of December.
I do see your problem however with the channel as it's one of the ways you support your family and it forces you to get clicks. When to do so all you do is pick up discs and go here it is and then get blasted when you have an opinion or want to get off the beaten path then I understand why you're questioning the channels future.
You do have a happy appreciative audience, we're just silent most of the time, we also have lives and limited time. Social media only brings out the outrage in comments as it powers the need to spend our time to type a response.
Anyway, love your work. You keep doing it and I'll keep clicking in.

Heath, you're a true talent and your voice is needed on RUclips. As a longtime fan of the channel, I would say don't change a thing, your approach is genuine and unique. You bring a sincere and rare sense of joy to cinema fandom and I appreciate every video you drop. Though I dig all that you offer, your interviews are a personal favorite and an area where you really excel. Your recent conversation with Charlotte Barker being a particular standout. Comments across the internet are largely a cesspool populated by miserable and talentless clowns that seem to be obsessed with consuming product they'll never actually watch. There is really no reason to engage with the slip cover deep throaters, just keep hammering and doing what you do best. I've turned many on to you over the years and most of my close friends continue to subscribe and watch regularly going years without posting a single comment. The silent majority are behind you. Stay up, brother. You're appreciated by those that actually love film.

Even if I don't comment on every video, I appreciate your honest opinions and deep dives into films and not just the physical releases. I do love your Kino Lorber spotlight videos because they are my go to boutique label due to the classic line and modest pricing. I'll be honest and say I hardly ever make it to the theater anymore. By the time I take the family out it would cost seventy bucks for a matinee of a movie most of us will be lukewarm about. I love older films much more than modern cinema, and I'm ok with that. I'm not going to come up here and pee in your cocoa krispies because you liked a movie that flopped. Some of the best films of all time were box office failures. The loudest voices are always going to be the most ignorant, unfortunately. I hope you can see the path through the weeds and keep doing the good work. You’re probably the closest to me in terms of our experiences with movies because of how close our ages are, and it really warms my heart to know someone like me is out there talking about movies the way I would have if I have even a sliver of your gift for the gab. I think the trade-off for having a huge social media following nowadays is having to deal with the negativity. In fact, I see it as a badge of honour that people even bother to use their precious time to come spew crap into the comment sections of your videos. But you also have to understand that they do not represent reality, or your true fan followings. I think some of your followers have already mentioned here about how they do not necessarily engage or leave comments even though they absolutely loved and looked forward to every video you put out. Have faith that the silent majority are enjoying and benefitting from the content, and that the toxic commentators are just part and parcel of the insane internet space that we have today. I mean, they may complain and b*tch a lot, and yet, they’re still here.

I haven't seen Joker 2, so I'm not going to offer an opinion on whether it's good or bad, but I confess I have no desire to see it, and I will say that it seems questionable business sense for a movie that targets comic book fans to also be a quasi-musical. I just don't see those two different kinds of audiences intermingling much - if there even still is much of an audience for musicals at the movies. But anyhoo, yeah, I agree that we ourselves should be the final arbiters of what makes a good or a bad movie, and should be careful about jumping to any conclusions based on influencers or whomever calling films out based solely or mostly on their supposed politics or agendas. I'm not saying none of that stuff exists, that there are not any agendas, but again, we need to decide more often for ourselves whether a movie is ultimately good or bad. Take some chances, occasionally go see a movie that ordinarily might not be your first choice but that you suspect you COULD like, and sometimes you will be rewarded. Hell, maybe I'll take a chance on Joker 2. (Well, okay, probably not that one. ;)

The negativity toward movies comes down to people not seeing the big picture as to not knowing what it takes to make a movie. Not understanding the ideas that comes from top to the bottom in the scale of making movies. Cause everyone involve want to make the best of what they are handed by the studios producers directors and writers. As a movie collector i also have heard complains. With me mostly why you keep spending money on movies when you have so many and with having no family what are you gonna do in the future as you get older. My answer is when i come to that road i will try to solve it. Some of the people i know are really movie haters of so many genres. Well to each its own. My way of thinking is i dont let it get to me. Like talking about the movies or just showing off some of the new releases because it does help me learn about movies I've never heard of and would like to check out. I like when you get into the older movies or tv shows and talk about film noir. I agree this has been a good year for movies. I loved The Bike riders. You're review for Kneecap got me excited, and I made sure I saw it in theaters, and loved it. I was disappointed with Joker 2. Even though the reviews weren't good, I went in thinking positive. I didn't think it was bad, just maybe a little too long maybe like 10 minutes could have been trimmed off somewhere. Though I will watch it again in the future and re-evaluate it. I do agree that there is a lot of negativity in the movie community. Like how a movie gets picked on because it's the new thing to make fun.

I thought Horizon: American Saga Chapter 1 was fantastic. I’m glad I didn’t listen to the negative feedback on that one, feedback that was probably mostly from people that didn’t see it. It does seem like so many people today form opinions on what others say (whether it’s News/Politics or Influencers as you say) over making up one’s own mind. It truly is a baffling time we find ourselves in.
I’ll keep watching movies in hopes of finding something I truly love, even if I don’t like something, I can move on to the next movie w/ that same hope and from time to time I’ll be pleasantly surprised and want to talk about how great it was. That sure beats wasting time talking about something I didn’t like. I don’t know, maybe i’m wrong. But that’s the way I’ll continue to approach my cinematic journey. I guess i’m set in my ways at 53… 🤷🏻‍♂️
Just keep talking about those movies/genres you love and sharing some new things you discover. 👍🏻

Hi Heath, I have noticed your frustration recently with all the negativity, but please don’t give up.
I’m one of those people who watch all of those long form videos where you feature all of the film releases for one month from a particular distributor. But I admittedly don’t post a comment to every video. That doesn’t mean I didn’t like the video.
I appreciate that you, like myself, thoroughly enjoy the oldies. I came of age as a real movie fan in the mid-80s when some of our greatest actors and actresses were struggling to keep making movies and the films they were making inspired me to look for-and later purchase-Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Crawford, Henry Fonda, the late, great Kate Hepburn and James Stewart’s films of the 30s through till their last films. In fact, some of my all-time favourites are movies such as, ‘All About Eve,’ ‘Double Indemnity,’ most of the Tracy-Hepburn films, ‘Philadelphia Story,’ ‘Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?’ ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf’ (with one of my favourite actresses, who left us much too soon-Sandy Dennis), ‘Autumn Leaves,’ and ‘Rebel Without a Cause.’
I am still a sucker for a weeper or a serious, thought provoking movie. And I still get excited every time you announce the release of a new title in those categories!
I know it’s easier said than done, but try and ignore the negative thoughts expressed by the keyboard warriors living in mommy and daddy’s basement and instead focus on the positive and neutral commenters. The rest is just noise!

Few disorganized thoughts for you. 1) I've always enjoyed your content, but it's more important that you enjoy your content, 2) Watch some old episodes of Cereal at Midnight (the one's you're most proud of or brought you the most joy) and maybe that can be a template. 3) Normies don't get cinephiles. Never have. Never will. You're doing specialized content for a self-selected audience. Some will and should fall by the wayside. 4) The internet is full of idiots and trolls. The bigger you get. The more likely you are to encounter them. If you want to keep doing this, you can't let them ruin your day. You can make fun of them.

I come to this channel not for what makes other channels cool or beneficial. You have a cool vibe and niche that best when your doing what you want to be doing, like informative interviews, talking about movies you love, cool new films, and revealing which new blurays, theatrical, or streamers were cool discoveries for for you. I say stay in that realm, and don't worry about showing everything that has come out. Talk about what you like the most or most intrigue you and that it. 2024 has been the best year since Covid for sure.

Your videos are top tier and help a lot of people to discover music, movies and art. I understand it may be tough sometimes as the hateful comments stand out and obviously hurt. All I can say, there must be a lot of people who would be absolutely shattered if you left. There are currently only two channels that make sense - Cereal at midnight and the 4k Kings. If RUclips is making your passion fade, quit it! It would be a huge loss for all us. Anyway thanks for all!

It really surprises and dismays me hearing the abuse you receive. • @zagain11

Here's the thing -- why should you change anything? Why react to the negative minority? There will always be complainers and malcontents who dislike stuff. But there are also a larger portion of your audience who are typically more silent (such as me) because I don't really have any visceral reaction to what you've presented.
I enjoy the videos where you show off new releases, but I don't go out and buy every one. Sometimes you pique my interest in something and I buy it. Sometimes I'm happy because you've clued me in to a release of a movie that I want and wasn't aware that it was being released.
I enjoy the interviews you do as well. I commented on the recent video about The Fly movies you did with Anastasia Elfman because, ironically, I was actually in the midst of going through those movies myself (I'd only ever seen 2 of the 5) so hearing comments while I was in the middle of the set was really interesting. I've enjoyed every video you've done with Max Alan Collins (one of them prompted me to go and stream the Quarry television series based on his novel series wihch was quite entertaining). Similarly, I've enjoyed every video you've done with Brian Krey because it's interesting to hear about the approach that Alpha Video takes, but more so, about some of his interests outside of those movies (such as his comic fandom).
I enjoy the movie reviews you do. I don't always agree with them -- there are movies you've liked that either I was lukewarm to or outright didn't like. But I respect your insights and enjoy hearing your takes on the films even if I had a different reaction. I also think it's interesting to hear your thoughts, particularly when you delve a bit behind the scenes (such as the recent Joker review).
In summary, I like the channel. I like the content you provide. I don't think you should do more of any one thing or less of any one thing. I think you should continue on the path you've taken. Perhaps the only change I would suggest, which is a difficult one, is to ignore the negativity (or at least don't let it drag you down). The vocal minority shouldn't have more sway on the channel than the silent majority who enjoy the content.

Unscripted are some of my favorite videos you do. I guess it is just like a movie star that gets to a certain level. They stop signing autographs and interacting with fans and have to have security and whatnot. It then becomes this lonely way of life in service of the art. I hear you brother. Whatever you end up doing, I'll be there. I really think maybe ending interaction with the trolls is the way to go. I follow a pretty big tik-tok guy (political guy) and when he goes through his comments, he deletes and blocks ever single troll. That is what I did on my FB account and have never looked back.

I wouldn’t say it’s one of the greatest years - but I would say that there’s something for everyone. You have massive flops like Joker 2 and then you have massive indie horror hits like Longlegs and Terrifier 3. Then you have big budget auteur flops like Horizon and Megalopolis. My top 4 of the year so far are:
    Furiosa
    Longlegs
    Horizon
    Alien: Romulus
I’m hoping Nosferatu rounds the top 5 before year’s end.

I don't usually comment but I thought that the experience of Pete at Sea of Tranquillity youtube channel might be of some use to you. SOT is a music review channel for fans of rock music and has been going for many years but over the last few years he noticed negativity in the comments towards content, guests on his show and other members and he has seen fit on several occasions to call these negative people and their behaviour out in videos, and I presume for serial offenders banning people who continued their bad behaviour. I'm sure he still gets negativity but it does seem a whole lot healthier now than it has in years gone past as these people are no longer as vocal as they used to be. He also around 12 months ago decided to reduce the output on his channel as the workload was just becoming unmanageable for him, and it has benefitted him and his channels content for the change. It might be an idea to reach out to have a chat with Pete to talk through some of these issues and see how he copes with this very angry world we live in now. He also does a great show on horror films on a Thursday called The Monsters Den so maybe a coop show on horror films would be a good idea? Anyway keep up the great work, hope you are encouraged by the positive response to this video.

On your point about the review-bombing before a picture is even released, usually to the negative side: this is what almost kept me from enjoying the 2017 Joey King picture Wish Upon (because the reviews of it [mostly negative] were written so forcefully negative that it was like I felt like I was being told [I'm autistic] that I was not allowed to make up my own mind, and that I should not even try to enjoy it); I got it on a thumb-drive from my nephew, saw it, and truly enjoyed it (so much so that I have it on physical media now [DVD/Blu combo pack], and it's one of 6 pictures of hers that I have and have truly enjoyed [my physical media of her projects also including Universal Home Entertainment's Blu of her 2019 Hulu limited series The Act]).

Haters will come and go. Your tribe will stick with you. Just keep following your passion. Maybe it would help to turn off the comments for a while just to get a breather? I know that’s counter productive when it comes to having a conversation about movies but hey.. it’s an option. Been following you for years now, and I never really read or leave comments, but it sucks to watch you struggling with this problem. The danger of welcoming a conversation in the comments is people tend to confuse the term “debate” with “argument”. I recently listened to your podcast episode of The Fly, loved it.
