Thank you! Your video was in depth enough to satisfy and concise enough to not drag on. My only dislike is that there aren't more videos like it. If you ever do make any I will definitely watch em. 😁
I noticed a few mistakes in the video, if you don't mind my pointing them out. Stake driver only has thrust on two moves; its jumping attack and fourth untricked r1. The max values you listed for gems are of r20 gems, or "Abyssals". However, watchers, which drop gems without secondaries as you mentioned, cannot appear on layer 3 of dungeons (and as such cannot drop r20 gems). Oh, and he also forgot(again) to specify that although the visceral does indeed do thrust damage(which he didn't say last time) it is boosted by the weapon thrust damage more than the physical (or at the very least, comparably) Making weapons like reiterpallasch, rifle spear or church pick among the highest damaging -if well-fitted with proper gems- for a visceral-focused build.
@@iota-09 not necessarily, any weapon with a number for thrust on the stats screen can benefit from this. The strongest weapon for viscerals is actually the threaded cane, which has a unique property that boosts its skill scaling while tricked
I honestly love rusty's bloodborne videos because although this was still pulled from other sources and may already include stuff that most hunters already know, a lot of people still learn new things and youtube videos like this are a more digestible info source for stuff like this as well as a compilation where you can learn a lot, quickly in one video rather than scouring the internet for this stuff. Rusty for me is a very reliable source for bloodborne tips and there is no other youtuber that I know of I trust better Very well made and well thought out.
Rusty. Thanks for helping me remember that it's Bloodborne's 6th anniversary. Usually I'm in top of that cuz it's my favorite game haha. It's time to return to Yarnham.
Recently started the game up again and decided to watch this to see if I had been missing anything obvious. This video is the best explanation I’ve seen on weapon scaling of any soulsborne game. Thank you.
somehow the way you present this makes it so much easier to understand usually when i watch video's of damage numbers it is usually dry and unpalatable or only focused on one part so heavily that you don't understand the surrounding info
That over- and under-leveled attack scaling against enemy defenses explains so much of what I experienced for the past 6 years! Lovely video, thank you!
I’ve been playing the game for like a year and a half and I had no clue what this stuff meant all I knew was that big numbers meant big damage so this was a big help with clarifying all that
I have no idea what you’re talking about but you’ve earned my sub. Currently on my third play through since release (and finally doing the chalice dungeons for the first time) and you basically rolling rocks’ed me. No wonder I get owned at pvp lol.
I guess Rusty is all business when heavy mathematics are around...it's bizarre to not hear u making a bunch of "your mom" type jokes, but was a welcome change of pace for a really well done, in depth video on a really involved subject. Being a math nerd, all the damage calculations are part of y I love replaying these games so much and trying to make a completely optimal build. Just felt u deserved some praise bro, good shit!
Honestly did not know a lot of the information in this video. I definitely didn't know defense was calculated that way of how much higher or lower compared to your weapon AR mattered. Thanks for the insight fellow hunter!
This is all stuff I've felt out and observed through gameplay such as using a thrusting weapon against the Kin. Was really cool to see the numbers behind it, unique videos like these are awesome thank you so much Rusty!
Damn, turned my minor headache tryna grasp weapon damage scaling into a major headache. Awesome video though, this is like the clearest, most thorough and informative guide of this type on RUclips 🙏🙏
I think true fans will watch your vids no matter what it's about honestly. And considering my brother occasionally plays BB I think he'll find this especially helpful.
Quick note: Nourishing blood gems are, in fact, not a good idea for weapons like the Chikage, or any Blood Damage weapon, because blood gems that increase Physical damage also increase that weapon's Blood Damage. This does not apply for gems that increase Scaling (Abyssal Heavy, for instance, increases the weapon's STR scaling, but because Blood Damage relies upon Bloodtinge scaling, it doesn't increase Blood Damage at all). Also, I'm curious where those blood gem values came from, as I've never seen a Tempering gem above 27.2%, or a Nourishing gem above 21.5%.
It comes from the official guide. You've probably never seen a gem with that high of a stat boost because most gem farming locations are for gems with secondary effects that probably lead to slightly weaker primary effects, but those secondary effects are usually good enough to make them better than single stat gems.
@@rainestar6781 That sounds like an adequate explanation, but there are many gems which don’t reach those highest of values that lack a secondary effect. The gems I’ve found, even from the final boss of a 4-layer FRC chalice, don’t go as high as the values shown in the guide.
@@occultnightingale1106 I've honestly never done a deep dive into how gems are determined. I know that generally higher level gems will provide a larger bonus, but I also know that randomization plays some part, so it could just be that the system biases away from the extreme ends of the spectrum. I've never bothered before because even the gems you get from farming the winter lanterns in the base game and the DLC can carry you well into ng+6. It sounds interesting to look into, but if it's like anything else in this game it's probably headache inducing as well. From really wants you to feel that madness, eh?
@@rainestar6781 Ahh, a disappointing answer, if only because it is not readily available. So, it falls to me, the lunatic willing to spend thousands of hours repeating the same processes and delving the same rooms and killing the same enemies just to uncover the forbidden truth. I feel the eye of Miyazaki on me this day, and the abyss is ever-encircling. But, perhaps this madness may allow me to serve a grander purpose, for posterity.
For some reason I thought this video was about Elden Ring's damage explained so I watched waiting for him to stop talking about Bloodborne. Then I realized.
8:00 - I don't know if you clarify this later on, but blood damage is considered a type of physical damage. You can see this by slapping a tempering blood gem onto the Chikage. It increases both the untransformed and the transformed attack stats despite the transformed attacks being purely blood damage.
"...there's a surprising amount of thought that goes into this number." Yeah, like making sure 90% of the enemies you empty your entire stamina meter into with R1 spam always manage to have that one magic pixel of health remaining, so they can still knock you flat on your ass (with no I-frames to protect you, unlike every enemy in the game).
@@BDeerheadI know at least in Elden Ring there’s an additional mechanic that basically causes enemies/bosses to end up having one HP a lot. So I’d imagine it basically works so that if you only did some small number more than their health left they have a reserve armor and only take damage down till they have one HP. Pretty shitty but at least that also works for the player taking damage so you don’t always die and end up on one HP occasionally. Wonder if that also happens in bloodborne, could be the case
HEY! Thanks to your videos, I started a deep, 3 playthrough long investigation to discover that... YES! Male and female characters sometimes have slightly different outfits and the differences are documented on the wikis. I just never played a male character and didn't realize that the Cainhust knight clothes looked so different... But I've also added 3 more runs to my growing list. So that's nice
Surprisingly enough the Stake Drivers damage is almost entirely physical damage, with only few exceptions(transgormed R2s and untransformed 4th R1+ jumping attack) despite you PUNCHING WITH A STAKE Amasing video, really enjoyed watching
Hey Rusty, thank u very much for your videos about bloodborne, I started playing the game 2 weeks ago and you really helped me a lot bro, the game is still hard and I die a lot but it is what it is, you still helped me a lot
maybe not many people care about this, like you said in the beginning. but for the people Who are intrested in this Kind of stuff (like me) this Video is pure gold. thanks my dude :)
I love how intricate and complex weapon multipliers in combos, inherent attack types, attack types, blade types, stats, enemy types and their weaknesses and strengths, I just remembered when I started gem farming and when you put all of the different types and shapes of gems with The 3 variants of each weapon with other buffs and stuff it became like a whole new game it was awesome, here’s a good one whirligig saw with claw mark, 3 beast runes, no insight, beast blood pellets, fire and a full transformed beast mode the walking L2 just multiplies exponentially with the risk of low defense but the amount of damage that one move used to its fullest extent will stun lock and continually multiply in strength for the duration of the move which when used against bosses can literally.hit for upwards of 15,000+ damage either outright ending a boss or maybe you have to stope due to a mid boss power up or transformation just to do another L2 walk to finish off any enemy in the game it’s so powerful and actually super satisfying to do but you must know the ins and outs of all the layered mechanisms involved to even begin to understand what exact factors you need to achieve in order to pull it off but once mastered just slow walking and gringing enemies into oblivion when done right was that most fun I had with the extremely high damage weapon club shared by a few weapons and their specific model within each weapon it is gratifying like nothing else I love how most people won’t ever understand the true depth of customization in this masterpiece of a game, bravo rusty on bringing a lot of this to light to players that may not have known some of these different factors and multipliers.
I love the idea of Church weapons doing more damage to enemies in Cainhurst. In the lore it's loosely implied when we meet Lady Maria who is a distant cousin to Queen Analise in Cainhurst that both are vampires. There's some dialog from Queen Analise herself that somewhat backs up this theory. I think this rumor came about because if you magically get Lady Maria's side table to stay intact during her fight, afterwards if you were to look at the goblet it has blood either in it or around it. So it would make sense as to why Chicken Alfredo and the other Executioners were sent into Cainhurst to kill the Vilebloods. However, I don't think they fully knew what they were getting themselves into. I believe Martyr Logarius, much like Alfred does later on, attempted to kill Queen Analise. However he was clearly unable to, so he then sealed away her secret chambers with the power of his crown and sat atop the castle until his eventual death and subsequent resurrection when we arrive 30 or so years later on
Thanks for this explainer. I just dusted off my (unplayed) copy of Bloodborne (long story, involving my PS4 being somewhere else for a few years) and found the damage system a bit opaque. It took me a while before realizing simple things like adding an elemental gem to a weapon makes the +Phys% gems useless to match with it, for example.
God do I love this game and its design. I just recently started a new playthrough where I heavily focus on the threaded cane only to have underestimated its effectiveness and it being such a boss killer. I played this game numerous times, learning all its secrets, lore, mechanics and meta. But I never heard of any big player talking about the cane. For this video you mentioned the threaded cane and its various damage types a couple times so I thought I shared my insight on the greatness on one of the starting weapons
The ridiculous levels of math involved in simple damage calculations now makes much more sense why when games come out, there's usually particular weapons that either suck, or outright destroy everything, and then all they have to do is go tweak those numbers a bit to balance things out
This is a great video that explains the whole damage thing. Usually I would have a backup weapon and keep it for unique enemies like a saw spear since both mode do serrated damage to beast enemies and place a fire gem in it, making it a beast slayer.
Correction at 8:00 . The Chikage is blood/physical damage, so Nourishing would be a poor choice of gem type for it. You would be better off just getting a physical gem, because blood damage is considered physical. Of course most serious Chikage users go for pure blood gems, but I've never heard of anyone suggesting Nourishing.
Dang bro you took this onion cut it, battered it, breaded it and fried it. You really made me understand this alot better thank you even though it still was a little complex.
There's another damage reduction formula that a lot of games use, which I'm surprised FromSoft never bothered with: DamageDealt = TotalDamage * [ 100 / (100 + EnemyDefense) ] So, using the Saw Cleaver's 90 damage vs the Yharnamite's 70 Defense, we get: DamageDealt = 90 * [100 / 170] = 90 * 0.588 = 52.3 What I really like about this formula (aside from its simplicity) is that it can be thought of as a health multiplier. Every 1 point of Physical Defense, for example, increases your effective health against Physical Damage by 1%. If you have 500 health and 50 defense, it would take 750 (or "500 + 50%") physical damage to kill you.

Making weapons like reiterpallasch, rifle spear or church pick among the highest damaging -if well-fitted with proper gems- for a visceral-focused build.
@@iota-09 not necessarily, any weapon with a number for thrust on the stats screen can benefit from this. The strongest weapon for viscerals is actually the threaded cane, which has a unique property that boosts its skill scaling while tricked
Im happy that someone still make pretty nice bloodbotne videos
they put so much thought into it just for me to simply look at the gems as " ah, this one gives me blue numbers. good."
Rusty for me is a very reliable source for bloodborne tips and there is no other youtuber that I know of I trust better
Very well made and well thought out.
This game still is the ultimate masterpiece imo.
Not sure if I'll live to see another one like this, let alone better than it.
I am so impressed with all the sound effects. Not many people put in the extra effort
I’m legit so happy to still see love for this game years later. Never stop Rusty your videos are amazing man.
This is such a great video 👏 😵💫🤯🔥
Love you man. Don't stop giving us bloodborne content. I always rewatch your videos as I replay the game :)
Well shit he is back in bloodborne
This is awesome. I love it and I know what's going to be playing through my head on my next playthrough.
I just started Bloodbourne for the first time. Thank you for making this video, Good Sir. 🧐🦇
This is the single greatest RUclips video of all time.
As Oldman once said:
"Don't go any deeper then this.... unless you wanna go hollow"
Everybody should learn this things in school.
I'll do ya one better, byrgenwerth should just be the name of a college somewhere
Lots to unpack here, thank-you for taking the time to make this video.Subscribed
I think true fans will watch your vids no matter what it's about honestly. And considering my brother occasionally plays BB I think he'll find this especially helpful.
Happy 6th birthday bloodborne!
Don’t worry, I noticed how you uploaded this on Bloodborne’s 5th birthday
8:00 - I don't know if you clarify this later on, but blood damage is considered a type of physical damage. You can see this by slapping a tempering blood gem onto the Chikage. It increases both the untransformed and the transformed attack stats despite the transformed attacks being purely blood damage.
Rusty this is the best video you've done man.
Me: sees another Bloodborne almost a decade after it came out and I’ve completed it nearly twenty times.
Also me: “I should play her…”
"...there's a surprising amount of thought that goes into this number."
Yeah, like making sure 90% of the enemies you empty your entire stamina meter into with R1 spam always manage to have that one magic pixel of health remaining, so they can still knock you flat on your ass (with no I-frames to protect you, unlike every enemy in the game).
Looks like someone wasnt able to get past Gascoine
Cry some more and git gud
@@_doop8257 I've platinumed the entire game (chalice dungeons and all) multiple times. I speak from experience.
All things considered, Monster Hunter seems a bit more complicated than this, but this is still hard to test yourself. Amazing work!
Surprisingly enough the Stake Drivers damage is almost entirely physical damage, with only few exceptions(transgormed R2s and untransformed 4th R1+ jumping attack) despite you PUNCHING WITH A STAKE
Amasing video, really enjoyed watching
God im getting nostalgia i need to go back and start an ng again
Amazing and informative video! Love the statistics and formulas you showed and greatly appreciate the examples that went along with them!
A very fun video for a fellow bloodborne addict
Hey Rusty, thank u very much for your videos about bloodborne, I started playing the game 2 weeks ago and you really helped me a lot bro, the game is still hard and I die a lot but it is what it is, you still helped me a lot
maybe not many people care about this, like you said in the beginning. but for the people Who are intrested in this Kind of stuff (like me) this Video is pure gold. thanks my dude :)
Thank you been wondering how it works as when I read the calculation online I seem to get just more confused
Man, these binge BB videos make me want to hunt again. A hoonter must hoont
What a knowledge, I saw the complete el video and understood things had been searching months ago, respect bro and thnks 😃👍🏽
Jesus I love your dedication to this great game
Aaaaaand he forgot to say "Happy 6th Anniversary". Damnit.
I think that's probs why he decided to upload a bloodborne video lol
God do I love this game and its design. I just recently started a new playthrough where I heavily focus on the threaded cane only to have underestimated its effectiveness and it being such a boss killer. I played this game numerous times, learning all its secrets, lore, mechanics and meta. But I never heard of any big player talking about the cane. For this video you mentioned the threaded cane and its various damage types a couple times so I thought I shared my insight on the greatness on one of the starting weapons
Nice video. Loved the part @11 sec 🤣
The ridiculous levels of math involved in simple damage calculations now makes much more sense why when games come out, there's usually particular weapons that either suck, or outright destroy everything, and then all they have to do is go tweak those numbers a bit to balance things out
3 things never change
The sun rising and setting
Death
Rusty making these damn Bloodborne videos
If I were to show this to my maths teacher would he be impressed?
I have literally never played BloodBorne before yet here I am.
*Me who has never played bloodborne* : What useful information thanks rusty
Very informative video. Thanks for this 🙏
This is a great video that explains the whole damage thing.
I was just about to get a ps4 to play blood borne for the first time so this is very useful knowledge to have
Hk silksong looking wild
This video is really fascinating. Thank you
Dang bro you took this onion cut it, battered it, breaded it and fried it. You really made me understand this alot better thank you even though it still was a little complex.
There's another damage reduction formula that a lot of games use, which I'm surprised FromSoft never bothered with:
DamageDealt = TotalDamage * [ 100 / (100 + EnemyDefense) ]
So, using the Saw Cleaver's 90 damage vs the Yharnamite's 70 Defense, we get:
DamageDealt = 90 * [100 / 170]
= 90 * 0.588
= 52.3
What I really like about this formula (aside from its simplicity) is that it can be thought of as a health multiplier. Every 1 point of Physical Defense, for example, increases your effective health against Physical Damage by 1%. If you have 500 health and 50 defense, it would take 750 (or "500 + 50%") physical damage to kill you.
Man I love bloodborne and your bloodborne content is so useful, thanks 👍
Nice to see you again on bloodborne
