One of the reason I love bloodborne is ALL weapons are viable (at least for pve) that’s why their are less of them, it’s not like dark souls where there are like a hundred weapons but only 40 of them are actually usable. With the right build any weapon can be used, hence why they all have their own unique move set.

The Reiterpallasch (not correct spelling) does that as well, but it's ranged option can double as a parry. You can even melee in it's gun form. Even when you're meleeing during it's gun form, it's still pretty effective due to how fast the normal attacks are. The Burial Blade used to be my favorite Trick Weapon, but now it has to be this. It can parry, thrust (kin killer), slice, shoot. It does everything. It's a one-tool arsenal.
As a beginning weapon yes but depending on the build and gems it becomes a mid tier weapon. Its really good but can be greatly out damaged for example like the holy moonlight sword has the highest AR in the game. It's extremely powerful but can't be buffed it depends on what ur using what build ur going for. But having a weapon like the HMS (holy moonlight) with its very powerful attack with a secondary weapon thats able to be buffed with elements is really useful and negates that u can't buff the HMS. By all means the saw spear is a very good weapon if built right but it can be out damaged later in the game.
@@ayman___16 yeah I agree they are good. I wouldn't say they are top teir when it comes to being heavily out damaged tho. I feel like I have fallen into a wormhole back to 2015 where people though the chikage was overpowered, endurance was a good stat, and no heal duels ruled the land. Thank you for the nostalgia trip. 10/10 video, would r1 in frontier again.
When I saw that my opponent had the chikage, I instantly stopped moving realizing my inevitable death, I could only wait until it comes closer and closer quaking in fear. The chikage killed my family and my friends. The chikage did every atrocity in history, fear the chikage and its power. When I was confronted by someone with 99 endurance and a chikage, I instantly came everywhere at its mighty power. I learned to fear the old blood that day, it made me drip my own blood into a puddle on the floor, god save me when my opponent whipped out his massive, engorged, bulging chikage, I pissed my pants.
I like to see some recognition to Saw Spear at least after years. The most underrated and forgotten weapon, but one of the most handy and reliable in "Underrated" list and all game. In my time i made a whole character to explore dungeons with Saif and Saw Spear. The next Insight i wish for people to gain is understanding how beautiful and smart the Beast Cutter is.
A few months ago I got back into this and chose to beef up my Threaded Cane. Being able to roleplay as a Belmont as well as just chewing through certain enemies was a dream.
Threaded cane is a pretty darn cool weapon, tbh, an its got one hell of a moveset. I have still to use it extensively for a playthrough, but I won't disagree that the Cane is a great weapon.
I began playing Bloodborne for the first time about 3 weeks ago, and I have fallen in love with the Saw Spear. Appreciate the vindication and the info this video provides.
With respect, I don't get why this dude is saying it's underrated at all. It's widely considered one of the best weapons in the game because of its moveset.
Same here. I bought a ps4 2 weeks ago, just to play this game. I'm at the end of my first playthrough and I haven't used anything else other than the saw spear (except for Rom, I used ludwig's holy blade for that fight, but that's it). It was totally worth getting this game, I'm having a really great time playing it.
@@walnutking92 it has only become more enjoyed recently. To this day, I and many others see it for the mediocre side grade that it is. Underrated means "not liked enough as it probably should be" I don't think its underrated not only because I think it's actually become overrated, but also because it got its thunder.
The saw spear's R2 is my favorite in the game, aside from burial blade's. The follow up upward slash sends even merciless watcher flying.the transformation attack is great for limbs, just ask Amelia 😉
This is why I love the Church Pick because, as you said, it does it all. Useful damage types and a crazy versatile moveset. The Threaded Cane for similar reasons. You really can cover all possible encounters with those weapons.
Church pick: -Buffable -Thrust -Range -Low stamina cost -Speed -Good scaling -Durability With blood gems it's no contest the best overall PvE weapon in the game.
I think the saif is better off to use against human type enemies, like watchers and hunters. The saw spear is way more diverse, and very deadly against beasts, especially with fire blood gems.
@Gian Luca okay buddy, I beat the game in 2015. Been there since Demon Souls. It’s not hard to learn which Hunter tools work and which don’t. Maybe go back to the Lab NOOb
the other good thing about the spear is that because it scales with skill more than strength, you can pump points into that first and get better visceral damage earlier
I played through the game mainly using the cane and i did not regret it, it felt nice having a close range weapon for enemies i was confident against, and a longer range hit (when in whip form) when i had no clue what i was up against, it especaily helped me take down the true final boss on my first attempt even though i was panicing thanks to the 1 hp move that stopped me from healing
Honestly this video warmed my heart, ive been in love with bloodborne ever since game grumps played through it. And i had been noticing a decline in content being made about it.. obviously i cant fault anyone, do what makes you happiest, but its really nice to see people making videos about this game again :D
This is probably my favorite game ever, I've played it multiple but only last year did I decide to do a complete run, meaning all bosses, killing all enemies at least once, getting all weapons, outfits, runes and items, and even though I though it might turn into a chore it became my favourite playthrough as of yet, spending the time on learning the attack patterns of enemies I usually skipped at all costs (sharks, bloodsuckers etc) reminded me of why the combat is so great, searching every nook and cranny makes obvious the immense effort that went into the level design, in sort, I fell in love with the game again
First playthrough was like genocide run for me, I was hunting down and killing all beasts and bosses, few weeks later I find out most bosses were OPTIONAL😩 no matter, it's been more fun for me and challenging to actually hunt down everything
3 views, 161 likes, and 41 comments. Good to see RUclips hasn’t changed. But it’s better to see Rusty joining the hunt again, so, in proper Hunter fashion. “May the good blood guide your way.”
1st playthrough I benched the cleaver for kirkhammer and then ludwig's sword, then in NG+ I purchased The Old Hunters and swapped to Moonlight, and then in NG++ I wanted something different so I took only the cleaver with me. When I fought Amelia (I skipped cleric beast this time then looped back) I realized I had stumbled onto something. She got absolutely shredded by the cleaver. Yes I had a high modifier by this point, but for it being NG++ I never thought it'd wreck house like that. I used it for the rest of that run and I have to say, it was an immensely wild ride. I got up to NG++++++ on that character, and the cleaver never left my equip slots. Spear wasn't my cup of tea. It wasn't as slow as the big weapons I was used to but it wasn't as fast as cleaver, so it just sat in an odd spot for me where I couldn't quite get its timing down. Touched cane once, never again.
Agreed, Cleaver is also better at staggering and the "measly" 10 extra damage adds up for the multiple hits it dolls out in such a short amount of time. Plus it just looks cooler
Rusty, I THRIVE on indulging upon the obsessions of others. The way you articulate your love of this stuff especially enthralls me. Say all you want about it, I'm here for it even if others said it already.
Don't forget, weapons that deal thrust damage also scale your visceral damage sneakily. Weapons without thrust do not do this, but a weapon with thrust damage applies the scaling to your viscerals (which do thrust damage regardless of what weapon you use) so the saw spear is better despite its lower base damage because your viscerals are better than if you are using the cleaver. So even if you use a weapon that doesn't deal thrust, you should have a second weapon that does for things you want to backstab or shoot
This is incorrect*. In fact, the Cleaver is better for Visceral Attacks against beasts because it applies serration to your Visceral Attack while in saw form, and the Spear doesn't**. *Your right hand weapon's blood gems apply to visceral attacks, so if you equip Thrust Attack Up gems that will increase your visceral damage. That would be true regardless of the weapon benefiting from it. **For some reason, if a weapon has serration/righteous damage in both forms, the bonus doesn't apply to viscerals. But if the weapon has the bonus in only one form, and you have the weapon in that form, the bonus does apply. Hence why the closed Cleaver applies serration but the Saw doesn't. The best weapon for visceral attacks is arguably the Threaded Cane while transformed. Not only is it serrated, it also gets +15% Skill scaling and that carries over to the visceral too.
i have always picked the saw spear over the cleaver because it looked better , its good to know about these hidden mechanics ,it makes me wanna do another bloodborne run
I miss when Rusty was like this. Calm, clear, and actually made sense. I still enjoy his content nowadays, but I miss when he took the time to have a calmer and more sensible tone rather than just shouting insults into the mic because a weapon is slightly underwhelming.
Next time someone asks me to describe a pick weapon to them I'll simply say that it's a pole with a single huge saw-tooth attached to the end obviously lmao
I'm not the first, and I'm certainly not the last to say it, but I'll say it anyway. Every single weapon in Bloodborne is easily memorable. There is so much backstory, so much character to each weapon. I mean, from the starting weapons alone, we get an Axe that transforms into a Halberd, a meat cleaver specifically designed to hunt beasts that transforms into a long meat hook, and a cane that turns into a whip! Whoever thought of the Threaded cane is a genius! Then later on, you get access to the Rifle Spear, which is basically a gun and a spear stuck together, and a fist weapon that shoots stakes from it's unrealistically large mechanism when you stab people with it! There's a sword that suddenly becomes a giant hammer! Or a sword that transforms into an even bigger sword. A sword that transforms into two swords, a katana because Miyazaki doesn't care if we're in Victorian Era England, he's gotta have a katana, even at least one! Every weapon is so crazy, so unique, the entire weapon list is a colorful mess of weapons that are so interesting... I love everything about it.
Worth noting church pick does not have a serrated multiplier. It is actually unique in having the "beast hunter" modifier instead. This is the same effect as found on gems, for example "atk vs beast down" curse, which is a negative beasthunter effect. Beast hunter is actually applicable to more enemies than serration. For example, labyrinth madmen are affected by beasthunter and not serration. Also worth noting that despite saw spear's greater scaling at max stats it will still have lesser AR than the cleaver. This is true of arcane conversion as well. Spear's main advantage is its inherently larger hitboxes in untricked form, despite having the same moveset. The tricked moveset comes down to personal preference, as you mentioned with the thrust. Saw spear's slower tricked form is balanced by having higher multipliers than in it's untricked form, while the Cleaver's tricked mode has lower multipliers. Your content is a lot of fun an easy to follow, I'm a big fan, but please please try to do your research in the future
Saw spear also deals serration damage on its saw-to-spear L1, unlike the cleaver. So that's an advantage if you prefer to end combos on a single L1 press. Both deal serration when transforming back into a saw, and the cleaver-to-saw L1 hits harder than the spear's, so if you like to do two L1s back to back they break even.
Yay 4 Bloodborne. I recently decided to get the platinum (finally) and I've been playing around with all the weapons. Can't use the Moonlight Great sword 🗡️ for everything.
Id played dark souls one, rung both bells and killed smough/orenstein by the time i picked up bloodborne, but the game had never really sucked me in. Bloodborne was cool, exhilariating in fact, after id beaten cleric beast after *3 days* and hundreds of attempts. Gasgoine and BSB took significantly less, and i used the chalice dungeons to get a giant scythe. I was dissapointed by Burial Blades damage, until i spent about. Idk, four hours straight? Running from start to end, no shortcuts through forbidden woods, killing every snake head, big snake ball and normal dude along my path in an absolute *shower* of blood using its moveset. Bloodborne really let me fall in love with fromsoft games, and itll always be my favorite because of that :)
I'm gonna be *that* nerd: the serrated damage bonus is 20% for all weapons that get it, but the righteous bonus is 20% for Church Pick (both modes; both modes also get the serrated bonus) and Threaded Cane (untransformed), 30% for Logarius' Wheel in both forms, and 50% for the silver sword (Kirkhammer, Ludwig's Holy Blade), transformed Holy Blade, and both forms of the Moonlight Holy Blade. Also, nothing in the game resists thrust damage-Kin-type enemies in particular are disastrously weak to it, but *literally every other enemy in the game* has thrust as its lowest physical resistance. As an aside, the weapons that deal bonus righteous damage are the straight swords, with the exception of Cainhurst's Reiterpallasch.
I only found your channel about 2 months ago when I started Hollow Knight, and started BloodBorne a month ago, so this was pretty exciting to see, especially since I used the saw spear until the end of the DLC
I confused myself with the word under-used with underrated xD I get it, it's not that many people don't use it it's because there are much preferred builds than what the saw spear is used in
I really love the threaded cane early game, but switch over to the Powder Kegs' Rifle Spear as soon as I can get my hands on it. The rifle is a weapon that I don't see many people use, but I personally love that I can 2 hand it all day no problem while also having access to it's firing mode
Ludwig's Holy Blade is super hard to go past, 1 hand and 2 handed that thing is a force to be reckoned with. I still remember my first playthrough when I finally found the blood rock and upgraded it to +10 for the first time I felt invincible walking around with a +10 weapon =P
Another huge advantage in my opinion for the SS over the cleaver, Is that having to invest in skill rather than strength, you get visceral damage up much more, and more quiclky, through your leveling ups
Nah. Saw Spear ain't underrated. It's one of the despicable weapons if you're using it in PVP, you will be killed and POINTED DOWN for your try-hard. The other one is Saw Cleaver.
Hunter Axe and Saw Spear is my current favorite "beginning-of-the-game" loadout. You've got big hits and long range on one end, and big spikey serrated poke stick of doom on the other end that can cleave beasts like a Thanksgiving ham.
Anybody else starting a completely new character out of the blue after not playing for several months? I know exactly what you feel about the feeling of coming back home bro. A hoonter must hoont after all
I got this game on release and never actually played it because I got stuck at papi g, I picked it back up like a few weeks ago and I'm so thankful I never fully experienced it. That super dopamine and serotonin shot you get after killing bosses is something I can't get tired of. Beat it 3 times and still going. I can't put this game down
I remember when I got the 3 weapons in the beginning and testing them out. The first thing that drew me towards saw spear was how quick the side to side swing attack was, the thing that made it my only weapon was the trick range and it's stun locking.
It was definitely the R1 speed that made it my go-to currently (on my first play through right now). Made dealing with those goddamn werewolves MUCH more manageable because you can just overwhelm them with the speed of the attacks.
I only just started playing and saw cleaver has been go to, spear just hasn't got the moveset, transformed cleaver has good range and speed. Interesting to learn about serrated/ righteous damage and glad to see content is still being made on this game!
Glad to see somebody has made a video on this topic. The saw cleaver always seemed way more popular, but I always thought the saw spear was better for all the reasons stated here. On a quality or arcane build they have roughly the same attack rating, so the saw spear is just better for its more versatile transformed moveset and for always being serrated. On a pure strength build, the saw cleaver is slightly stronger than a pure skill build saw spear is, but on a pure skill build you get the added benefit of massively powerful visceral attacks. All in all, there's really no practical reason to ever use the cleaver. The saw spear is basically the same thing but better regardless of your build.
Lately, my favourite underrated weapon has been Threaded Cane because it's a great pick for both skill and arcane builds. And the per-point damage increase in its skill investment is insane. Also, I love the fact that its R2 whip attack can almost hit anything regardless of the target's stature. This is especially true against bosses, since the whip's heavy strike can hit the head of every boss.
Saw Spear is indeed underrated, because most people don't understand how deep the Untricked R1 of the Saw Spear is. The average people plays with the shallow, overpowered Ludwig's Holy Blade or Chikage instead of the deep, thought-provoking Saw Spear. When people use Skill instead of Quality, I cried, since Quality is an often misunderstood build. There's just so much thought poured into Quality Builds, like the +65 Strength Scaling Gem obtained from the dreaded Headless Bloodletting Beast or the intricate Gem that has 27.2% Physical Attack Up from the much-praised Merciless Watchers Boss
The +65 Strength is OP, but my Kirk Hammer is sadly lacking, a fully charged r2 does less damage than my Chikage. I think this is why people use more of those weapons, Chikage can be a plus 3 and be OP.
@@Patches_Gaming kirk hammer is underrated, you must use 3x32.6% bloodtinge gems for MAXIMUM DAMAGE of kirkhammer. But to be honest with you, nothing beats chakage in terms of damage
Your explanations of basic to complex game mechanics has won me over good sir. I am subbed and I JUST found you through YT algorithm. So thanks RNG gods.
Every new game I start I immediately run straight to the saw spear. It's so fun to see how far you can get before being sent to the Hunter's Dream, grabbing everything you need along the way.
Honestly if I knew those subtle things about the weapons when I started I'd have been far better off. You just dont get that kind if depth in most games, even other FromSoft titles, so you dont look for it.
the church pick actually doesnt do serrated damage. it does beasthunter damage. its unique. its like serration but its way better and applies to more enemies.
@@Patches_Gaming LMAO, well i might have beaten dark soul 3 and sekiro on my own but everybody is new to bloodwork apparently, so i do hope amygdala goes easy on me
I love how people are still making bloodborne content like six years later and still getting nearly 100,000 views. It fills me with much joy that people appreciate this game as much as I do
This is very interesting, tho, I have mixed feelings about this design choice tbh. Completely hiding a 20% damage buff just behind some vague descriptions and the design of the weapon is... questionable, to say the least. I never would've guessed such a strong modifier, simply because the game is already giving me so many statistical informations. Why would it withhold something else?
It's very weird, especially because the weapons do have two little icons with value 100 in the description, representing beasts and kin: when you equip something like the golden gem from Amelia, the value with the yellow beast icon goes up. They could have just set the serrated weapons with a base value of 120 next to that icon
@@pilot3605 they reason they didn’t is because it’s not a damage stat, it’s a multiplier. Serrated only works on curtain enemies that’s why it’s not a stat.
I’ve had bloodborne in my backlog of games for a while and your videos kinda got me off my ass to start playing it and now I’m upset I didn’t play it sooner
They are for diff builds actually so if your a str build you should use the cleaver but skill builds would be better with the spear as it has better skill scaling
@@123NERDZ Yeah I guess that explains why it didn’t work with my strength build. It’s weird that the weapon is a strength based weapon when it’s faster than the spear one which is slower. I just thought that the saw spear was just an awkward slower version of the saw cleaver so I didn’t use it.
I've been playing this game since release and I've never heard of the Serrated or Righteous damage system. But it explains A LOT of things. Christ I love this game.
I love the Stake Driver, man. Everyone's always like, "Oh the R2 is so slow, you'll never be able to use it," when plenty of enemies and even some bosses are perfectly willing to give you enough time. And for the ones that won't, just chug a Lead Elixir and laugh as they struggle in vain to defuse the bomb before it detonates in their face
I used the stakedriver on a build before, I wouldn't even waste the lead elixer on the meme, both forms r1s are very fast with great dps so I'd use those on anything too fast to hit with the super charged r2.
I liked it at first but after hundreds of hours I find other weapons more appealing to use, specially if we talk about movesets, for example Rakuyo. Also, I came back to Saw Spear as my easy-going weapon. And if I want crowd control here and there I go with the Burial Blade. It's a matter of taste but I was bored of CP despite having all the damage bonuses. At the end bonuses don't provide anything exciting to the gameplay anyway. That said, I also feel CP was always underrated and due to the differenced forms, okish movesets and bonuses it's easily on the top 3 of best weapons, having in mind the effectivity and versatility.
I honestly wouldn't mind more in-depth videos for other weapons. Don't have to be comparisons (althought nice) but just in general videos in that manner. Good job, dude.
As someone who has played Arcane extensively, Arcane scaling only affects physical damage, not any form of elemental damage. Putting Arcane gems on a pure physical damage weapon like the Saw Spear (making it a Conversion weapon), adds the same arcane damage regardless of whether the weapon has an A or C scaling in Arcane. It's newly converted arcane damage will depend entirely on your own Arcane stat, independent of the weapon's scaling. Moreover, the physical damage you get from a weapon with very high Arcane scaling (e.g Ludwig's), is far lower than the damage from other stat scaling. Arcane scaling on a weapon is something that should be completely ignored when deciding on what to use in a build. You can use literally anything with the right gems and high Arcane. In general, hybrid weapons like Tonitrus deal far less damage in a pure Arcane build than a Conversion weapon (pure physical with elemental gems). With hybrids, you want stats like 50 Arcane 50 Strength. An example of my 99 Arcane build: Beasthunter Saif with Bolt Gems for Kin - Beast Cutter with Fire Gems for beasts (benefits from serrated). I don't bother with Arcane weapons, as a boss susceptible to Arcane damage will get obliterated by A Call Beyond anyway.

@@nohomeobromeo4973 outdamaged, yes but it has literally unrivaled dps along with cleaver. The fact that it's the most versatile weapon helps too
@@ayman___16 yeah I agree they are good. I wouldn't say they are top teir when it comes to being heavily out damaged tho.

You really ought to make a series on all the weapons breaking them down like this
This is why I love the Church Pick because, as you said, it does it all. Useful damage types and a crazy versatile moveset. The Threaded Cane for similar reasons. You really can cover all possible encounters with those weapons.

Rusty in 2021: *saw spear go brrrrrrr*
He changed his mind again apparently lol
"Underappreciated" my ass. I see this thing used more than the saif under most conditions.
I think the saif is better off to use against human type enemies, like watchers and hunters. The saw spear is way more diverse, and very deadly against beasts, especially with fire blood gems.
If you haven't done so, doing an Arcane build playthrough of this game is incredibly fun and satisfying. Highly recommended.
I just finished one, some of those Hunter tools are sooo OP against bosses, it’s not even fair 🤣
I just started one, just killed the cleric beast with molotovs. I'm doing crap damage, gotta get myself a fire gem or two for my weapon.
I started one too. Killed Vicar Amelia in about 40 seconds with a fireblood crescent in my Saw Spear and the Flamesprayer.
@Gian Luca what are you talking about, I did my first real Arcane build on an NG+++ character. Get bent noob
Hey Baron - your videos are amazing!

Finally some more bloodborne, man oh man i love this game.
Saw Spear is King! Thank you Rusty
Bless 🙏 the king 👑
Explained it better that I would have.
Moveset is everything. Always loved my Kirkhammer and Ludvig's Holy Blade.
Blessed be... Bloodborne content in 2021... This the third time we get a resurgence? Fourth?
Bloodborne really let me fall in love with fromsoft games, and itll always be my favorite because of that :)
sounds like my guy finally found the right medication, he chilled tf out.
This popped up after watching jacksepticeye play through hours of the game using this weapon
I only found your channel about 2 months ago when I started Hollow Knight, and started BloodBorne a month ago, so this was pretty exciting to see, especially since I used the saw spear until the end of the DLC
I confused myself with the word under-used with underrated xD
I get it, it's not that many people don't use it it's because there are much preferred builds than what the saw spear is used in
It can be one of those things where it's just so insanely good that it gets a little bit boring to use
Saw is probably the most versatile weapon in the game but it's easily boring for most people.
Wow you’re right, good point
Hearing you talk about this game with such love and sincerity convinced me to buy a PS4 and a copy of the game

I only just started playing and saw cleaver has been go to, spear just hasn't got the moveset, transformed cleaver has good range and speed. Interesting to learn about serrated/ righteous damage and glad to see content is still being made on this game!
The saw spear is actually one of my favourite weapons too. I use it in ghe cursed dungeons because it's fast and hits hard

It's the same for pretty much every fromsoft game lol

Ah yes that one weapons I picked up and used for five minutes and then put it away for the way better saw cleaver.
The Cleaver is also arguably better for quality builds. Both are pretty good tho
The Saw Cleaver and Hunter Axe carries me through my first playthrough.
Man I feel like the church pick is underrated
It is, ad it is best weapon in the game. It has all damage bonuses you can think of, extremely high AR. And you can put 32,6 % gems on it.
Dude.amazingly said.Still waiting on every weapon review. The hunt needs to go on.
