About This Video:
In this video, Sean Cannell from Think Media reviews a budget camera monitor and cheap camera monitor solution for creating videos. This camera monitor setup uses either your smartphone or a laptop and is nice if your camera does not have a flip screen. You can use a laptop as a video camera monitor. You can also use a smartphone. And this video shows how to use your phone as a camera monitor and shows the camera monitor app, which would allow you to use an iPad as camera monitor. This is essentially a DIY camera monitor solution, so check out the video and leave a question in the comments section!

⚡ QOTD: Have you used the APP or SOFTWARE for your camera yet?LMK! 👇👇👇
Think Media yeah, but I can't put it above the tripod
Not yet, because i use my phone to vlog
I have Nikon camera and Nikon app mobile utility which works only for taking pictures and downloading them or maybe I do something wrong.
Hit me up with a camera let me start do some videos
Yep
I remebered the days pre flip out screen. 1/2 of my videos were out of focus. Great tips and ideas in this video.
You seriously answer all my questions before I even think of them !! This is deff my favorite RUclips channel. This and video influencers ! Thank you for the consistent great content !
I’ve used the Panasonic and Canon app for monitoring. An iPad is a great wireless solution as well. It’s like a HUGE field monitor. It comes in clutch when autofocus isn’t cooperating. Just tap and keep shooting.
does the app allow external recording to the phone?
@@boarderboi6 No, it’s a wireless connection so you wouldn’t be able to get anything with a quality image recording to the phone in real-time anyway.
Love your videos Sean! Greetings from the other side of the world! I learned so much from you! Great job and keep doing! You inspired me so much!
Thanks for comment Sherry - happy to help - keep crushing it! 👊💯
Just starting using my phone as a monitor and love it. I the DSLR controllor app on an LG G5, I can autofocus and adjust exposure while in front of the camera, which makes life much easier.
Thank god I came across your channel! I am weeks away from setting up my RUclips channel, your videos have answered so many of my questions!!!! Keep them coming!!!!
2:47 ... that tripod leg being too close to the edge is making me nervous.
Very excited to try this out with my laptop on my next RUclips video. I have used my phone before but feel like it's still too small. Using the laptop is really smart. Thank you for the tip!
Thank you so much I just bought a DSLR camera and it didn't have a flip screen so I haven't been using it bc I couldn't see myself. Being new to RUclips I feel that is very important to see myself filming. This is the best advice. I appreciate it very much! I watch all your videos and have learned so much. Now I can film my first video lol. Stay blessed and know your making a difference in the world of RUclips
Dr Rylie
so glad you made this video. thank you!
Yes!! Thank you! I just made the switch to Sony and was researching a cheap monitor with little success. I suspected there was an app that could do this and I’m so happy to find out there is! Love your vids! Thanks!
Some cameras have those rca or hdmi outputs. You can plug them to those cheap car, or security cameras screen lcds. They are not great for color, but to at least you know if you're in the right place for shooting!
i saw where this was posted in 2017, but its still useful up to this day in 2020. Thank you.
I hadn't thought of using a laptop. Great stuff as always, Sean.
So glad I found this looking at your previous videos. Great information I can't believe I forgot to even think to use my laptop as a monitor.
Hey ThinkMedia your the reason I started my channel !! I use to watch you on my old channel and now here I am and you have 1 million subscribers 🔥🔥 your awesome !!
Great information. I am going forward with trying both these methods. Cheers.
Good info... I'm an Actor and often must send in Video Auditions... this seems a great way to do this. I've just been using my i phone in the past but this should give a much more "finished" result... I'll probably try to figure out how to connect a lavalier mic as well to try to get rid of room boom... Thanks, again...
Was looking for this! Sean the best
Omg I LOVE THIS GUY! man, I really appreciate you so much for showing me the tricks of this trade! I’ve brought everything for my channel based on what I learned from your videos!
these tips are so useful; thank you so much! great video 👍👍
I needed this, thank you❤
I have Sony a6000 and use playmemories to instantly share photos. It's pretty cool
Thanks for this info, I am a newbie and some years back I bought a Nikon D3200 for our daughter to take pics at events. I am learning photography now and had been using a 7" battery powered TV as the monitor. I thought that would be great to be able to use a old Note 5 I had laying around the house and found your video. I can't wait to hook this up! :)
Thanks for another great video, Sean! I'm just starting out on my RUclips Journey. Sadly, even though I use the latest model Nikons (D5, D850, D500) the Nikon Snapbridge app, still doesn't support live view in video mode and you can't even start/stop recording. Not to mention that none of Nikon's DSLRs have flip screens. I've heard of a few independent apps that allow you to connect a smarthpone via an OTG cable. I know you're not a Nikon guy. But I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, or better yet, see you do a video on it! Keep up the great work...
Hey man! Hope you have got a solution! Otherwise you can use, wireless mobile utility, wmu , by nikon, that connects with phone with wifi and nfc!
Great video, I know this will be great help to use the laptop app when doing model shoots with my SL2!
awesome as always sean
NICE TO SEE NEW INFOS
I thought I’ll need to spend more money, but this guy helped me. Thank you so much.
I will try this one thanks for sharing this video.
Sean, Sean, Sean... why I didn`t think about it before!
Thanks for the idea! I`ll use it next time for sure! This way I will know when my camera is not recording ... battery dying in the middle...
These videos are really so helpful for people who are trying to start a channel!
Nifty...love the concept, and much cheaper than the last camera monitor you reviewed!
About to buy a Sony and this video is just what I needed!!! Thanks👍
Happy to help - keep crushing it Brad!
be careful man don´t think it´s too easy unfortunately... THe sony app is actually terrible and won´t let you use any picture profiles and a lot of other settings while in remote control.
I still prefer my Sony A6500 over my GH4 tho and I have used a lot of cameras including the big Sony´s, Ursa Mini, RED, etc. (:
Always great videos and tips. It all has helped me tremendously. Keep up the great work.
👊💯
Wow!!! Didn't know I had at on my Canon.. Can't wait to setup my table.. Thank you so much..
Awesome! This video came just in time! I just got a Sony Alpha a6000 and it doesn't have a selfie screen so I guess I'll be downloading the app! 😄👍📷💪💕
Sorry bud this doesn't work for video mode on the a6000 - if this works for you let a brother know
Hello Sean! I was just thinking about..HOW WILL I SEE MYSELF WHILE IM VLOGGING?! and your video came up and i was like OHMGEE! THIS WILL HELP ME! Thank you for the tips Sean!
Thank you very interesting! I think my canon t5 is too old for the app so I’ll have to look into the usb alternative but I appreciate the clarity!
thank you for your video i think it will me I have just got a canon 400d and I have on live view for it so thanks a gen
i will followyou for the rest of your youtube carrier ...thanks for helping me to sort out some small but shitty bug with my gx7 2:20
You’re so incredibly helpful 😩
Thanks Sooo much 😋
Best video ever helped me a lot thanks Sean and keep creating videos
lovve this channel . thanks for sharing!
I learned a lot here. I use my iPhone to film cuz I have a very old cannon PowerShot. Saving up for a newer Cannon. Thank for the info.
Awesome thank you so much I really appreciate
Thank you for sharing this tip it's helpful to mee
THIS REALLY HELPED! THANK U SO MUCH!
This was helpful thanks
Thank u for telling something i didnt even know i need thanks a bunch
Panasonic has an awesome app. I've just started using it for my G7. Even though the flip out screen gives me great control right on the screen. I do like to shoot my videos from a few feet away. The app is really terrific for that.
Thank you for the tips!
Fantastic this really helps
Omg such a big help!! Thank you!
This was so helpful! Thank youuuuuuuuu
Yes thank you for reminding me I can use Sony play memories app, I have a a6000 and have used it before, but totally forgot I can do that.
Very helpful.. I m loving it ... coz I really need this kind of things
Great video! 😀
thanks so much for this!! my laptop is 4k and awesome so this saves me headaches and $!
this was SOOO helpful!
1:47 is when we get to the good stuff
You just saved me $40 on buying a webcam! Olympus Image Share, free app, does many basic shooting functions including live preview and remote start for photos and videos. THANK YOU!
Canon 70d doesn't allow recording while wifi is on. What other way can we do it using the phone?
Thanks great video
Awesome video man 😍🔥
Hey thanks for the Nikon app you didn’t mention smh
Sir .Your videos are very helpful for me.thanks
Ty I Will be doing that ty very much
Hi Sean, love your videos. I'm just starting out (cooking show) and only using my iPhone with two tripods. As I can't use my iPhone or laptop, do you have a separate monitor recommendation that I can set up to mirror what my iPhone is recording? Thanks much!
This really helped because I knew Canon had wifi technology and all that but I didn't know it was to this much detail and extent. If you want a story, well I have a Canon G7X mark 1 and I was taking photos for a project, realized I forgot my Macbook's adapters so there was no port for my SD card but the photos were due in 30 minutes so I transferred the photos using the wifi app.
this is really great :)
Excellent tips and a big help to determine essential gear right off the bat. I can't help it but the entire video I'm staring at the GorillaPod and how close it's sitting to the edge of the table and thinking "No...no...no...don't hit it with your hand..." lol. I have a Sony A6500 but I can't stand the PlayMemories app. I wish they'd update it. Or maybe it's just me.
Awesome video Sean. I’m about to buy a camera for myself and i was really worried about flip screen (coz they cost a lot more than normal)....... i have a question, if I’m vlogging outside will that app work? Since it only connects with WiFi. I don’t know if there will be internet available to me at every single place I go......
Thanks!
I really appreciate you and your videos. I purchased the camlink 4k and it was such a hard process to deal with. Definitely will be returning. I really should of watched your video first instead of being so damn impulsive!!
There are two more options.
OTG transfer over cable. A bit faster than WIFI and faster to connect. Androids have a free app for it.
And then there are old monitors. You cant change the settings but can basically connect any HDMI monitor or a tv that is just lying around to your camera as long as it has the output and most do.
Sean, do you have a list of all your recommended gear with the amzn affialiate links with them?
Please do an update on camera monitors for canon M50 or can you recommend a good cheap 1080p please. I trust your channel.
Super. Thanks Sean
Hey Sean, I'm looking to get the g7x ii but recently i've been seeing some very vague videos on the g1x iii, would you mind making a video comparing the two or maybe making a review on the g1?
Nice video. I’m using olympus camera
I have the canon m10 what do you think of that, and what should i upgrade to for a low price
and nice work sean..
the sony a7iii can also change settings through mobile app playmemories for video recording too.whilte balance, shutter, format,f stop. etc. wish there was histogram
I loved your videos and i learned a lot from them. I have a Kodak az252 and a Haweii Honor 6x android which I want to use it as a external monitor for my camera. I tried to connected but doesn't work. Even connecting thru a HDMI to a monitor or TV. What should I do? or What can i do?
Very usefull
You're crushing it!
Ken Best 👊🏼💯
I'm not sure if you're familiar with Andrew Kramer, but you remind me a lot of him by the way you speak and just your overall personality. And that is meant as a huge compliment.
I started vlogging with a Leica T...but no flip out screen sucked. I had an iPhone mounted to the camera connected to the app to monitor myself....but eventually I “downgraded” to a Sony RX100 III.
For run and gun vlogging, setting up a monitor before hitting record is a big hassle! If I were making films or in a studio doing reviews or unboxings, the app route would make so much sense!
I use Samsung nx300. This is a Great option. Thank you.
Thanks a lot
Much love to all of my fellow RUclipsrs. Let have another successful new year. Great video, Sean.
👊❤💯
You Deserve way more views!
Random, but I really like that floor lamp on the right, where did you get it?
also, ty so much for your informative vid ~
It looks like an IKEA lamp to me.
Canon Camera connect APP has a usb connection? Wifi is very slow tô connect
Apt video. Thanks!
Question: Is the Canon PowerShot SX620 HS Digital Camera compatible with the app and or got a laptop compatibility software? If not, which canons (similar budget range) do?
Great Video...but i use DSLR Nikon 3200. Can you suugest me with any apps or software that will help me to turn my iphone or ipad or laptop into a monitor for the camera?
unless it's been changed my issue with the playmemories app is that you have to be connected to Wi-Fi with the camera and your phone. there are apps that allow you to mirror your camera screen using your phone if you have an OTG cable. I have yet to get one to work with my a7s
Hey,
Can I get to know if there is any application on Google Play Store for monitoring the live view while recording a video. 🙏
Because the EOS utility software is not working on Android. 😖
I'm torn between either the buget friendly Canon EOS 200D slr and the more compact mirrorless Canon EOS M6 that is slightly more expensive. They both have all the qualities I'm looking for when filming youtube content and some vlogs. Which do you prefer in this case? And from your experience is the quality between them noticable? Please help lol
Nice Video.
