    Excellent video. People get too stressed out over "portfolios". I know we did for a long time. We have seen some ELABORATE portfolios on RUclips....not necessary. I am so happy you made this video so parents can relax and not worry so much. Wish I had seen this video many years ago :) Melody

    I must say every since I decided to Home-school in September of 2017 I have been so stressed trying to make sure I do not fail with keeping files and documents. I moved from Georgia to Florida and I honestly love the decision we made. I watched a few of y'all videos and it puts such a great peace in my mind about the way I have been going about this process. Thank you so much!!...Truly appreciated.

    Hi! My family and I will be moving to Florida this summer from Missouri. I currently homeschool my 2 children in Missouri and have for the past 2 years. The laws are completely different here. Having to have my children evaluated and registering or submitting portfolio's to a school district is not something Missouri requires nor have I ever done this before. With that being said I am quite nervous about Florida homeschool laws and can't say I agree with them. I also have a son with a diagnosed learning disability from a psychologist and his former public school. He was also diagnosed with anxiety and confidence issues. What does this mean for my son? What does it mean if he isn't progressing as an evaluator or superintendent sees fit? He is slow and requires a lot of repetition or rote memorization. I do a lot of oral presentations with him. I'm a licensed teacher in my state so I do everything myself. Any help you can offer or advice is greatly appreciated. Would you be interested in being my children's evaluators?

      Jennifer Williams, Hi. Thank you for the questions. I will start with the last question first; yes, we will be happy to do the annual evaluations for children. It is very simple. Watch our video on that subject and stayed tuned for more of our videos to come.
      The annual evaluation, port folio review is administered by a FL St. Dept. of Ed. certified teacher, OF YOUR CHOICE (by FL law). Therefore, guessing that you would not choose the county superintendent to perform the review, and since I am confidently guessing that county superintendent is not FL certified, it does not matter what they think about your child's progress.
      Please feel free to call us any time: 78 SIX - 525-3545 / 32 ONE - 431 - 1869
      "I also have a son with a diagnosed learning disability from a psychologist and his former public school. He was also diagnosed with anxiety and confidence issues. What does this mean for my son?"
      To me this means that it is fantastic that you are homeschooling!! And, seriously, the law is very vague and there are no details, nor "standards" described, nor required for progress rates, (grade) levels, subject areas, etc. Therefore, the only requirement is that the subject progress. Yes, it definitely helps to find, and choose, an evaluator that knows the simplicity and truth about the home education laws/requirements, and that they are nothing like the public school (low) standards/requirements. Progress is the requirement and the homeschool directors (parents) set their student's standards.

      Thank you for your reply and I will certainly be in touch with you. I have watched a few of your video's and am so happy blessed I found them. I can't wait to see more of them. I appreciate your thoughts and help with this process. It helps to have someone who knows the laws and requirements. I have read in Florida homeschooling laws that a child can be required to attend a public school part time if a child fails to progress and after a year of being on probation. This was my main concern considering my son does have a learning disability (dyslexia, slow processing, and language processing) and failure to thrive in a public school setting due to his leaning disability. He is quite bright he simply cannot keep up, especially if it common core. Missouri has since down away with it but I know Florida has what they call Florida Standards and in my opinion it sets children up for failure, especially students with learning disabilities.

      Jennifer, as a homeschool registered (Letter of Intent to Home Educate sent to county) student, you are the school director. Get a FL certified teacher (like myself) that knows the laws and requirements, and you will have NO problems. No one can make your child go to a public school.
      Here is a good place to paste in some our description for the annual evaluation, and some of the FL home education law:
      Below is a general description of what we need to do a portfolio review for the annual evaluation, but first let me say a few things about the "portfolio review." You may know these details, though I find that most parents do not know the following, and/or the parents are a little confused about the exact requirements. AND, yes, it is a little difficult to believe that there are so few requirements for home education, especially when many county personnel, evaluators, teachers, etc. say differently. They do not seem to know, OR just do not WANT to know, that we have so much freedom in home education. It is Awesome!
      FL state statute 1002.41 states:
      (C) The parent shall provide for an annual educational evaluation in which is documented the student’s demonstration of educational progress at a level commensurate with her or his ability.
      The following is the most popular evaluation option:
      1. A teacher selected by the parent shall evaluate the student’s educational progress upon review of the portfolio and discussion with the student.
      The "discussion with the student," is the very LEAST important part AND there is nothing specific that the student is required to be asked. NOTHING specific!
      When doing the portfolio review option for the annual evaluation, an evaluator is only required to determine if the student has progressed at the student's ability level over the past year. Also, to determine progress the student is NOT required to have completed any particular text book, project, course work, or curriculum, class, etc. The student does NOT need to have an evaluation to move on to the next "grade level." It is simply an annual evaluation, once every 12 months, according to the date set by the student's Letter of Intent to Home Educate, sent to the county homeschool office.
      An evaluator is required to review samples of the student's work (portfolio), whatever subjects have been done by the student (parents' choice), and determine if the student has progressed over the past 12 months. An evaluator is NOT required to see ALL the student's work. A portfolio is simply "documentation of the student's progress/work." The student's work (portfolio) can even be documented by the parents with video and/or photographs, not only written work. All we need is to see a few samples of the work that the student has done this past year.It is our pleasure to be able to help with anything, anytime.

    Hi! Im from Florida and I have a 7 year old daughter currently in a private school. I’ve always been curious about homeschooling ever since I was in school. Now given that I have no knowledge nor experience on this I need a guiding hand. I’m leaning more on part-time to start but I don’t know if it’s an option in Florida. I also mentioned this idea to my family which they were not keen on but that’s alright because the homeschool world is alienating. My daughters ears perked up and than began her thousand questions which rendered useless because I can’t even answer my own questions without the help of my bff Siri. Anyways... help!!!! I don’t know where to even begin.

    • @lupitaeyde-tucker5767
      @lupitaeyde-tucker5767 6 лет назад

      When you say "part-time" chances are you are already doing that. What i mean is, if you are helping your child at home with their homework, projects, reading, etc., you are already homeschooling, you just don't know it :)
      There is no legal way to "part-time" homeschool, unless you mean sending your child to a school for one subject or more. There are some parents who are able to work that out with their local school, but it depends very much on the school and the willingness of the principal to accommodate your wishes.
      To do this you'd send a letter of intent to homeschool to your county school board. That is the first step for anything you'll want to try. At that point, once you send that letter, you are free to do whatever you want. Freedom is great, but it can also be a little overwhelming, especially if you don't have a clear idea of how to proceed.
      My suggestion is to find a homeschool co-op nearby that has the one subject that you feel least confident in teaching. Just start with that one subject. At the 2nd or 3rd grade level, your daughter is not going to suffer if she doesn't get a full courseload like she would at a school. That is a very contrived method of education anyway. So much more can be learned and covered by taking field trips, watching science and history documentaries, reading great books from the library that will pique her interest into learning more. You can focus on reading, writing, and math formally, and the rest add in through hands-on and other activities.
      What county are you in?

    I’m not sure if you talk to anybody directly or not but I have been homeschooling my daughter and we’ve been using the undchooling approach so it’s a lot of self lead learning we go out and we do all sorts of things and we learn about you know nature and plants birds all that kind of stuff we do some math work she loves to read so she reads a lot we do science projects together I’m she had a lot of work that she had done like that she had written like short stories and stuff to help her with her grammar in and The like. But recently we would have packed up all of her stuff to move in some water pipe busted in our house so while all our stuff was in boxes on the floors so much of the work that she is done has been ruined so I don’t know how to make up because January is when she’s due for an Evaluation I don’t know how to make up any of that work and I don’t want her to suffer because she’s worked very hard this year. So my question is do you have a way that I can contact you and maybe speak to you as to what I can do direct to rectify hat situation? Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Do you do evaluations for Volusia County? My kids are in 4th grade and VPK. I am going to homeschool starting after next semester. Do I send the Letter of Intent in May/June after school is over? And do I send one for my 4 year old who will be 5 going to Kindergarten?

    • @lupitaeyde-tucker5767
      @lupitaeyde-tucker5767 6 лет назад

      Yes, we do evaluations for Volusia County - as a matter of fact, we do evaluations in all 67 counties in Florida!!
      You can send your letter of intent within 30 days of your child turning 6. In Florida, 6 is the age of compulsory education.
      You can still homeschool your child before 6, you just don't have to make it official until 6.
      Also, you can do Kindergarten before sending your letter of intent. That is because the county doesn't keep track of your child's grade level. They are expressly prohibited by FL law to do so. That is because homeschooled students don't have to even follow grade levels. So you don't have to worry about starting before age 6 and having some conflict with Kindergarten or 1st grade. Just carry on as fast or as slow as your child needs to go and you'll do great!

    • @CharlesTucker
      @CharlesTucker 6 лет назад +2

      It is required to be sent to the county homeschool office personnel.
      We usually send it to the parents and the homeschool personnel via email attachment, if the parents desire us to, so it is printable and the parents do not have to leave the comfort of their home, and they do not have to spend and money on postage, or travel time, etc.

    • @CharlesTucker
      @CharlesTucker 6 лет назад

      "Unschooling" is great, especially in the sense of NO pressure, NO stress, set personal goals, lots of creative time, lots of individual and group decision making, and risks taken, etc.
      Lots of videos and photos of projects, from beginning to end. Build website/Blogs and/or photo/video libraries for student portfolios.
      The languages of number and letters ARE important!
      Multiple language learning is good. Better during the formative years of 5 - 14 years old, and beyond.It is our pleasure to be able to help with anything, anytime.

      @@lupitaeyde-tucker5767 Thank you for explaining that. My son was in public school most of his life, I just unenrolled him and registered him with Florida Unschoolers earlier this year (he was in 9th grade). I probably did the opposite of most - I think a lot of people unschool first then enroll in public school for high school - but I this is working well for us. He learned the language of numbers and letters extensively in his first 9 1/2 years of public school - he could likely out-math most of my coworkers, haha! So now we are relaxing and taking this time to dive deeper into his personal interests. It's nice to give him the time and space to do that before he ventures out into the "real world". Rebekah Burgess, Good afternoon. These are good questions, and the situation you have described is very common.
      First, my experience is that most county homeschool office personnel do not ask the parents before the annual evaluation is due. The county homeschool office should have mailed you a letter, card, email, or something to confirm that they received your Letter of Intent to Home Educate, and that sets the annual date for the Annual Educational Evaluation, ie. once every 12 months.
      You can call
      Karen Spoerlein - 863-534-0960. She is the homeschool contact person for Polk County. Ask her when your annual evaluation date is.
      The most common method chosen by parents for the annual evaluation is the Portfolio Review. The method of evaluation you do is your choice, and the FL certified teacher you choose to do the evaluation is completely your choice. It is very simple.
      We will be happy to help you with anything you need , any time, including the Annual Educational Evaluation. We have been doing evaluations in every county in Florida, including Polk County, for many years.
