    Thank you!! I have an 8 year old soon to be 3rd grader and he had been enrolled in our local county virtual school since Kindergarten using the FVS platform to teach but following the county district schedule. We love the flexibility this has provided him and he's been doing so well. The only thing we dislike is the standardized testing as we often feel a little gaslit by the material or by him at Kindergarten having to work a computer to answer multiple choise questions. We recently found out that come April they will no longer be teaching elementary students. So now we're trying to research as much as possible so that we can make an educated choice. I did speak to someone at FVS and they recommended FVS Flex but that I would need to email the letter of intent for homeschooling. So far, homeschooling sounds like the choice we're leaning towards.

    I want to pull my son out of Pre-K, he doesn't find it challenging enough. He gets bored and sometimes frustrated because they are teaching the kids things he already know. My sister in-law is a 1st grade teacher and has told me that my son reads at a higher level of the kids in her class and solve math problems. I don't know if I should take him out of preschool because he does enjoy playing with kids his own age. He will be going to kindergarten next year but I don't know if I should homeschool him(sounds overwhelming) you make it sound so easy. I will be checking out your other videos. Thank you

      One of the things that homeschooling is perfect for is the situation you have, where your child's educational needs are simply not being met at the school because he is bright and can move faster than his peers. Ultimately, you'll need to go with your gut - you know what is best for your child. But, if you decide to take the plunge, we will be happy to help :)

Also if you are still an an evaluator? And could you help us with that process? My son is starting 9th grade High School and we want to have him in homeschool. Does Florida have any laws stating that you have to follow the public school graduation requirements? I haven't seen any laws while doing research. Some of the requirements seem unnecessary.

    • @joligv3498

      No. There no requirements for FL. FPEA.com

    • @lupitaeyde-tucker5767
      @lupitaeyde-tucker5767 5 лет назад +1

      No, Florida law does not have ANY requirements for homeschoolers. We the parents, as the school officials and guidance counselors of our homeschool, decide what the graduation requirements are for our students. We are the only ones with the authority to do that.
      You are correct in that many public school requirements are unnecessary. They are usually meant to serve the factory model of education, which puts the institution first. Their one-size-fits-all approach does not make it possible to tailor an education for a specific child. Thankfully, homeschool does facilitate this.

I have a transcript of the work I've done and grades. Does it matter how many credits you have to graduate? and Also, how do I know or what paper I can have so I can show that I graduated high school being homeschooled. Thank you.

    • @lupitaeyde-tucker5767
      @lupitaeyde-tucker5767 6 лет назад +1

      Jenelle, Florida education law puts home, public, and private school all on the same level. So, your parent-issued graduation documents are considered legal and fully valid in the state of FL. The state of Florida recognizes that as equal to a private or public school diploma (it's in the FL statutes). The official document is called Homeschool Completion Affidavit, and you can google that and find one online. That is what a FL college or university is required to accept as proof that you have graduated from a legal homeschool program in the state of Florida.
      If your parents want to issue you a diploma certificate, they can order customized diploma certificates from HSLDA.

      Zahra, FLVS Flex is more flexible (hence the name Flex) and also gives you more control over your child's education.
      Also, FLVS FT is not homeschooling, it is actually public school at home. Your child is still a public school student if they are enrolled in FLVS FT.

    Umbrella Schools are not addressed in this video. Do you still need to do all these things from registering with the county with the letter of intent to all the portfolio stuff if you are registered with an umbrella school? I/we ask because no one we know does any of these things that are registered with an umbrella school. And the umbrella schools will tell you none of these things are required when you are registered with them...you have the protection of the umbrella. So, are the laws different with the umbrella school? Or do you have to do both?

    • @TuckerEducationalServices
      @TuckerEducationalServices  7 лет назад +1

      Very good question. Thank you.
      The short answers are; no, you do not "need to do these things" if you are registered with an "umbrella school." And, the laws/requirements for "umbrella school" students are different.
      The requirements for an "umbrella school" student, in Florida, are the requirements for a private school student. The "umbrella school" status falls under the private school category of education in Florida.
      An important point I must make, with regards to the "umbrella school," since I have many parents contact us and ask for help, is that the umbrella/private school status is not "supported" by the county, nor do the umbrella/private school students have many of the benefits, or resources available to them, that county registered homeschool students have.
      The following is a link to information about the pros and cons on umbrella schools:
      CLICK>> www.homeschoolingflorida.com/blog/florida-umbrella-schools-dont-use-one/

    • @Homeschoolingflorida
      @Homeschoolingflorida 6 лет назад

      Well, first of all, an umbrella school is a private school. So, a student that is registered with an umbrella school or non-traditional private school is not considered a homeschooled student under FL law. That means that an umbrella school student does not have all the freedoms, rights, and privileges that homeschoolers have under FL law.
      Secondly, an umbrella school (if it is following FL law) requires more paperwork than homeschooling via a letter of intent, which is what the video describes. In order for a student to register as a private school student, by law, they must provide a birth certificate, immunization records (or a waiver), and a physical. Then, once per quarter the parent must also report attendance to the school. All of that information also must be available for inspection by county superintendent personnel at any time (according to FL statute). If your umbrella/private school is not asking you for these things, they are not operating lawfully and that could seriously jeopardize your child's education.
      Whereas, a homeschooling parent only needs to send a letter of intent once (not yearly). Then, once per year they send the evaluation (there are 5 options to choose from to fulfill this requirement, parents choose the one they prefer) to their county. That is pretty much it. Then, when your child is ready to graduate, you send a letter of termination to the county. Super, super simple and easy.
      There is no such thing as "protection" of an umbrella (non-traditional private school). The umbrella school is not protecting you from anything.
      The laws are different for non-traditional private schools. Their students don't get free dual enrollment, they don't have the right to extracurricular activities at public schools, and most of all, they have to answer to the private school for everything. The private school is the authority over your child's education when you choose an umbrella school. This has created many unfortunate situations for students in Florida, especially when wanting to attend a college or university either in state or out of state.

    • @Homeschoolingflorida
      @Homeschoolingflorida 6 лет назад +1

      Florida puts public, home, and private education on the equal ground. This means that the parent of a homeschooled student (registered via a letter of intent to the county) is the school official of their child's school. The parent is the authority over the child's education, not a public or private school.

    What do you do if you have special needs children (2 with autism and learning challenges) for their testing? What they know and how they are going to test, will be two entirely different things. In fact, one of my kiddos is nonverbal autistic. My family and I are not from Florida but are considering moving their someday.

    • @lupitaeyde-tucker5767
      @lupitaeyde-tucker5767 6 лет назад +1

      In Florida, our homeschool law is INCLUSIVE, which means that it is written to include children of all abilities. No child is compared to another. The way the law does this is by only requiring one thing: progress according to the child's own ability. This includes children who are non-verbal, deaf, blind, severely learning disabled, etc.
      Homeschooled children in Florida are not required to be tested. So, your child will never have the scenario you describe.
      If you homeschool, your child will have an evaluation once a year, and that will cover what they learned (life skills are learning) and the progress they made according to their own ability. They will never be compared to any other child. As long as they are making progress (no matter how small) then your homeschool is in compliance with state law and that is all that is required.

      Dectera, there are places online where you can buy homeschool curriculum. Rainbow Resource is one popular retailer, as well as Christian Book Distributor. There are also many homeschool conventions around the country where you can talk to the curriculum publishers and browse lots of different resources in one location. For example, here in Florida we have the largest homeschool convention in the country, the FPEA Annual Homeschool Convention, which takes place on Memorial Day weekend every year. It's held at a resort in the Orlando area, and is three days long. The vendor hall is a football-field sized hall packed with every single homeschool curriculum provider you can imagine, and all sorts of products and services that cater to the homeschooling community. Florida has approximately 100,000 registered homeschoolers and is huge in our state. People from other states travel here to go to the annual convention.

    What is the legal age to start homeschooling a child? Can you request to start a homeschool for just one child? What are the test requirements I've heard SAT?

    • @TuckerEducationalServices
      @TuckerEducationalServices  6 лет назад +1

      The video explains all of this :) The age of compulsory education in Florida is 6 years of age. You can homeschool unofficially before the age of 6, but when a child turns 6 you must send a letter of intent to homeschool to your county homeschool liaison. That shows that they are not truant.
      Yes, you can just homeschool one child and choose other educational options for your other children.
      There are no testing requirements for homeschooled students in Florida. We are never required to take any test, ever.

    Hi, I had a question, my son will be turning 6 this year on June and I wanted to know if I need to file a letter of intent for homeschooling or not since he's turning 6 the same year I intent to homeschool? I'm a little confused. Please advise and thank you.

      Audry, if your son turns 6 over the summer, then you can send your letter of intent in August when other students go to school. However, you can also send it in June. That choice is yours. Just remember that whenever you choose to send it, one year later is when your evaluation will be do. So, if you send it in June, your evaluation is due in June. If you send it in August, your evaluation will be due in August. :)

    Ok, I am moving from Washington state to Florida in June. My daughter has gone to Washington public schools here. Do I send my letter of intent to the county here, or wait until I move in June? I don't plan on starting until August.

      I would wait until you move. No need to send it until you are in the state of Florida. You can send it to your county in August. What county are you moving to in FL?
      I don't know the laws in Washington, but you may have to withdraw them from your local school so that they are aware your children will no longer be attending. Also, that way you can get their records.

    hi, this was supper helpful. I have a question. My 8 years old is about to finish 3rd grade. I want to continue 4th grade and beyond in Home Education. So when would be the best time to send the letter of intent, after summer break? My other child just turned 5 so shell be in Kinder this year as home education.

      Thank you for the questions. The law specifies that the Letter of Intent must be sent within 30 days of withdrawing a student from a school, and/or within 30 days of the child's 6th birthday (Kindergarten is NOT required!).
      There is some flexibility on the part of the county homeschool office. Many people with several children, send the letters of intent at the same time of year, regardless of birthdays, so that their annual evaluations will be done at the same time of the year. Since you are letting him end the school year and not withdrawing him during the year, I would either send the Letter of Intent in June, right after the school year, so you could just get the annual evaluation done in line with the public school year. That is easy to remember. OR, send the Letter of Intent in September, so you can begin your year with the annual evaluation. Then I would do the same with the younger child AFTER they turn 6 years old. Just send their Letter of Intent in when you sent the older child's.

      Audry, the legal age of compulsory education in Florida (all counties, including Miami-Dade) is 6 years of age.
      Before 6 years old a child is not required to be enrolled in any school whether homeschool, public school, or private school.

    Great videos you had made me understand more about homeschooling. I have a question though. I'm a FL resident took up pt resident in another state dye to Irma. I'm back in FL. But my kid is registered in another state school. I emailed 2leters if intent for homeschooling my son. 1, to Burke county GA and one to Hillsborough county for Florida. I'm still having enrollment issue for Florida Flex due to my son records are still being processed in Georgia. Is there another way I can online homeschooling with FLSV schooling. He is in 6 the grade and we travel through the USA in our 5th wheel.

    • @lupitaeyde-tucker5767
      @lupitaeyde-tucker5767 6 лет назад +1

      As far as we know, you have to maintain a permanent residency in Florida in order to qualify for free FLVS. If you have sent a letter of intent to Hillsborough County, then you should have no problem registering for FLVS Flex since all that they ask for is if you sent a letter of intent and nothing more. Whatever is happening in Georgia should have no effect on that.

    Hi, I live in Miami, FL and I want to start homeschooling my son. What are the hours required per day to homeschool and how many calendar days are required in homeschooling? Also, do you personally do annual evaluations or do you know anyone that is in Miami, FL that does the annual evaluation or recommend? I greatly appreciate it! Please advise. Thanks

      Audry,
      Good questions. We thank you for participating in our forum here on our RUclips channel.
      There are no requirements for hours per day, nor days per year, with home education in FL. Here, in FL, we are like a private school, only WAY better. We can set our schedule however we like, hire tutors, do it all ourselves, use any curricula we want, and/or a lot of different curricula, etc.
      YES, we do evaluations in Miami. The annual evaluation is very simple and our fee is only $28 for an evaluation. If anyone tells you what curricula to use, what subjects to study, that they need to see ALL the student's work, etc. if they want more than $28 to do an evaluation, kindly tell them that you are thankful, and good bye.

      If your child is homeschooled via a letter of intent, you can use ANY curriculum you want. You can pick a different curriuclum for each subject if you want to. You can use nothing if you want to. You can make up your own curriculum if you want to. You do not have to use FLVS Flex, if you don't want to.
      If you homeschool via a letter of intent to the county, the county is only there to keep track of your child for purposes of TRUANCY. The county has no other role. They are not overseeing your child's education. They have nothing to do with your child's education, even if you use FLVS Flex.
      Using FLVS Flex as a curriculum option does NOT exempt you from the annual evaluation requirement. You will still have to submit an evaluation. However, you have 5 options to choose from to fulfill this evaluation requirement (see info in comments). Some counties will allow you to send in an FLVS transcript under option 5. Some counties will not, or will impose subject/grade conditions. But, no matter what, you are still required to send in one of the 5 options by the 12 month anniversary date of your letter of intent.
      WHEN you send a letter of intent to the county, YOU become the school official of YOUR school. That means that you are responsible to keep all records of your child's work and grades for any future purposes (transcripts, college applications, sports, dual enrollment, scholarships, etc.). Even though FLVS does keep record of the grade your child earned in an FLVS Flex class, FLVS is NOT your child's school, and their transcript is not your child's official transcript. ONLY the parent of a homeschooled child can issue an official transcript for that child.

      Yes, this is still required if you use FLVS Flex. This is required if you are going to homeschool - no matter what curriculum you choose.

      Yes, most, if not all, evaluators do charge, but it depends on the evaluator, the type of evaluation method used and/or if they have to travel a far distance. The average cost I've paid over the course of my 22 years homeschooling has ranged from $40-75 per child depending on the test they were given. PIAT is more costly, whereas most group testing, like the CAT-5 Survey test is on the lower end. Portfolio reviews average $25-50. I hope this helps.

      Jacqueline, Curtis Tucker, who appears in the video above, is a FL Certified Evaluator and he charges $28 per evaluation for online evaluations, and just a little bit more for in-person evaluations.
      We have a separate video that explains the simplicity of evaluations.

    Does my son have to be born on or before September 1 in order to be in Kindergarten if he is being home schooled?

    • @TuckerEducationalServices
      @TuckerEducationalServices  6 лет назад +3

      Margarita, your child can be homeschooled at any age. You can start 365 days a year. So the answer to your question is no.
      You can begin homeschooling your child from birth. HOWEVER, you don't officially have to send a letter of intent to homeschool to your county until your child turns 6 YEARS OLD. That is the age of compulsory education in Florida.
      So, you can start your child in kindergarten when he is 4 or 5 or whenever you feel he is ready, but to be homeschooling officially, you don't need to send a letter of intent until he is 6.
      Also, homeschoolers don't have to follow grade levels. So you can start whenever he is ready, but you also can move at his own pace. We do not have to follow a grade level unless we want to.

    Is this updated to 2018? Is there anything else? I am from Colorado and I am shocked how controlling they are here in Florida with the rights of parents and their choice to educate. So, stressed about this. My children are at 13th GRADE level in most subjects according to CAT. Yeahhhh!!! But, my goodness, they can only continue to learn. :) Thank you for your information.

    • @TuckerEducationalServices
      @TuckerEducationalServices  6 лет назад +2

      There is nothing else, that's pretty much it.
      Florida does not control parents, nor tell them how to home educate. The statute expressly prohibits each county school district from overseeing the education of a homeschooled child. The statute guarantees parents the right to home educate their child as they see fit. It puts home education on the same level as public or private education. Because of our statute, those three options are equal options in the eyes of the state of FL.

      Vanessa, they are not required to reply to your email. The only requirement is that you send a letter of intent. Once you've done that, you are in compliance with state law as it is written. Whether the county homeschool liaison acknowledges your letter is irrelevant. You are officially homeschooling the moment you send that letter. :)
      Make sure you send the letter in a way that you can prove that it was sent, and that it was received. We always suggest email, because you have a date/time stamp of when you sent it. Also, if it does not bounce back, or if you get an autoresponse, you have proof that it was received.
      One year after your letter of intent, and every year there after, you need to send an evaluation to the county.

      Evelyn,
      We thank you for participating in our forum here on our RUclips channel.
      The FL home education law states that a home school student must have a Letter of Intent to Home Educate within 30 days of turning 6 years old, or within 30 days of being withdrawn from a school.
      Since your daughter is finishing the year with a school, I would wait until everything is completed, including getting grade reports and everything, and then informing the administration at the school that you are moving your daughter to another school, and you need a copy of all of her records. If asked where to and why, I would simply say you are moving her to a new school and that it is personal, period. You need her records, period.
