@@eddietucker7005 Heath ledger earned that award through blood, sweat, and tears. This movie should have waited until January 01 because Robert Downey Jr deserved the Oscar after this performance.
Tom Cruise looked like he was having an absolute BLAST playing that character. I mean, they ALL gave it all, and had an obvious blast, but Tom was even more so.
Its funny how Robert Downey jr knows exactly what’s going on from the start, but won’t break character to tell them. He really does the dvd commentary in character.
This movie has sooo many memorable moments. I kept waiting for you to realize it was Tom Cruise. I didn’t know until the credits were rolling, insane. The whole movie is glorious.
During the pandemic, there was actually a small online movement to "cancel" Robert Downey Jr. over this role because a bunch of people suddenly found Tropic Thunder during lockdown and totally misunderstood the context of the Kirk Lazarus character. But that movement fell apart rather quickly when it was pointed out that it wasn't blackface with the intent to denegrate black people. The whole character is a satire of Method actors who go to extreme and even inappropriate lengths for their roles in order to be taken seriously and win awards. And despite the outrage people had over Kirk Lazarus, somehow no one was triggered by Simple Jack, nor did anyone try to cancel Ben Stiller over Tugg Speedman "goin' full retard" with his insensitive portrayal of a mentally handicapped character. It shows how hypocritical and selective their outrage was.
Small is an overstatement. It was virtually nothing but some media outlets ran with it to get people upset at the idea of canceling RDJ to click on their articles.
Australians should "cancel" RDJ for playing the Australian "Kirk Lazarus". Because there are so few Australians in Hollywood 🙂 RDJ and Tom Cruise were GREAT!
25:22 that’s the same experience everyone had watching this for the first time. I had no idea it was Tom Cruise until his name came up at the end of the credits
I don't usually listen to the commentary on DVDs or Blu Rays, but one of my friends told me it was essential to with this film. RDJ was one of the people on the commentary and in the film he has a line something like "I don't drop character until the DVD commentary is done". He does the whole film commentary with the black voice and as soon as he removes the wig in the movie, he starts doing commentary in his own voice ... now that is method and a perfect throw back to that one line in the movie.
Fun fact: The character Les Grossman was not in the original script. Ben Stiller showed the script to Tom Cruise asking for advice. Cruise came up with the character on the spot and offered himself to play it. He then asked for fat hands and being able to dance. Stiller was reluctant but agreed anyway and wrote the part thinking he could just cut the scene if he doesn't like it. He eventually came fully on board once he saw Cruise in full costume.
I love that this movie not only has parody moments of war movies (Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Saving Private Ryan, etc) but is a giant satire of Hollywood and actors in general
What I love about this movie and it’s not often mentioned is that it’s a hatchet piece on the Hollywood industrial complex. The excesses of Tinseltown are exposed, in the most satirical way, in the form of method acting, drug abuse, technical effects mishaps, etc and has a character that epitomizes each excess (Tom Cruise as “Les Grossman,” the king of the fiefdom, MM as the production runner, Nolte as the lying and deceitful scriptwriter/author, the director literally in over his head, plus many more). Needs several rewatches to get the subtext of Hollywood excesses and how the film goes about exposing each one. Absolutely brilliant.
Legitimately one of the most well written films in history. The amount of writing talent that went into this and thought... it's impressive as hell. And then to put it to film and pull it off in a way that isn't completely insulting to pretty much everyone... genius. And the cast. Who the hell manages to get a cast this stacked. These are all power house actors. Everyone knows Tom Cruise gives 120% 24/7... but everyone else nailed it as well.
I remember when this came out. It was absolutely legendary. RDJ became my favorite actor around this time. From iron man to tropic thunder he went from being a big actor to falling off with drugs, etc and then exploded and became one of this biggest well known actors of the time.
Sadly, I hadn't seen it myself, just read about it, but RDJ actually stayed in character for the DVD commentary of thr movie. Heck, he even switched his characters and only talked as himself at the very end.
The commentary is just as funny as the movie. Ben Stiller is like Will Ferrell in that he's funny but he takes his work very seriously. Ferrell was serious on the Elf commentary but Jon Favreau's director commentary was hilarious. So here's Stiller, seriously talking about the writing, the concept, his work as a director, and RDJ is dropping hilarious comments as Lincoln Osiris. Then Jack Black is mostly sitting with them, trying not to laugh himself to death over what RDJ is doing. I've listened to that commentary a few times.

This was the movie where I realized the brilliance of Robert Downey Jr. The success of this movie led him directly into the Iron Man franchise. I went back and watched everything he'd done before this and he was always really good. You're right, this movie could not be made now, just like Mel Brooks Blazing Saddles couldn't be made now. Tom Cruise was actually taking hip hop dancing classes at the time he got the role in Tropic Thunder. And Tom actually asked that he could have the bald head and prosthetic fingers.
Jim Carrey was caught up with playing Andy Kaufman in the movie man on the moon. On set Andy Kaufman's father was on set and treated Jim as if he was Andy his son.

Hands down one of the best movie experiences. When everyone processed we were looking at Tom Cruise in a fat, hairy suit. The silence after the landmine. Everything Kirk Lazarus.
RDJ was nominated for an Oscar for this role. Had it not been for the legendary, stunning performance of Heath Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Knight that same year, he very well may have won it.
The biggest controversy was not Downey Jr.'s character or portrayal. Yeah some didn't care for it. Others admired his commitment to the point where they felt it was very well done, others didn't recognize him. The biggest thing of all was the "Simple Jack" character and the "Never go full retard." conversation in the film. There were literally scores of people with Down's Syndrome outside of theaters protesting the film. Including other groups of people with physical disabilities. But all in all, every bit of controversy did the film a lot of good as people were hearing about the walk outs, the protests, and everything... thus making them all the more curious and they ended up going to see the movie anyway.
JIM CARREY has revealed that playing the comedian Andy Kaufman in the movie 'Man On The Moon' almost drove him to the brink. Carrey played Kaufman in the 1999 biopic, directed by Milos Forman, and fully immersed himself in the role, never breaking character.
The Tom cruise reveal was shocking to everyone watching this for the first time, anyone who said they knew by looking was a liar 😅 Tom cruise said he wanted big fat hands 😂
KNOW THE LINE WHERE R.D.J. SAYS, I won't drop this act until the DVD commentary? Just buy the DVD and watch with the commentary turned on. U will see a great performance!
"I'm a dude (Neil Armstrong) playing a dude (Father O'Malley) disguised as another dude (Sgt. Lincoln Osiris)." Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) has completely forgotten who he is... Kirk Lazarus was pulled from the refrigerator upon reentry to Earth's atmosphere and through his agent found he had to be a gay priest. Of course Neil Armstong lacked acting experience, but went for Immersive Acting, but without the ability to remember his lines he dropped that and let the script read him. Why not? He's a strong astronaut who usually succeeds at things, but Neil Armstrong found it was hard to lose the persona of being gay and not knowing how to be a black man chose the "Roots" character of Chicken George for his accent, but no doubt it was unnerving to see himself in the mirror when he heard he was scared of himself. Neil Armstrong probably found it hard to understand himself as a black man. You gotta give credit to Tugg Speedman for knowing how to crack his opponent during an argument.
And the funny part is, much like Robert Downey Jr.'s line "I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude", this movie was a movie about a movie about people trying to make a movie.
Robert Downey Jr was nominated for an Oscar for this role… unfortunately that year he was up against Heath Ledger’s Joker 😬

The movie is absolute fantastic and so is the documentary about it, think its called ANDY AND ME
I love this film so funny and great actors in it.
Ur reactions and comments are hilarious.
I really needed this today and to laugh so thank u 😊
The Tom cruise reveal was shocking to everyone watching this for the first time, anyone who said they knew by looking was a liar 😅
Tom cruise said he wanted big fat hands 😂
KNOW THE LINE WHERE R.D.J. SAYS, I won't drop this act until the DVD commentary? Just buy the DVD and watch with the commentary turned on. U will see a great performance!
"I'm a dude (Neil Armstrong) playing a dude (Father O'Malley) disguised as another dude (Sgt. Lincoln Osiris)."
Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) has completely forgotten who he is...
I'm just amazed that you didn't knew it was Tom Cruise...
Greatest line of all time xD: Im a Dude, playn a DUDE, disguised as another Dude 🤣👌
Watched this one twice. So much fun watching you react to Tom’s character!!!
I love this movie so much
Downy Jr was nominated for best supporting after in a comedy for this movie when it came out so that says a lot LOL
And the funny part is, much like Robert Downey Jr.'s line "I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude", this movie was a movie about a movie about people trying to make a movie.
Did you realize, the bald guy at six minutes was Tom Cruise? So many people didn’t recognize him, but his voice is so distinctive.
