It's March 3rd, 2024 and I just completed the replacement of my brake light bulbs. For the past week, my "broken/not working taillight" symbol popped up on my dashboard but it was strange because after testing ALL the back lights, they were all still working. With the beauty of the internet, I did some research and on a Toyota Camry forum, past owners stated that it could be a bulb that is ABOUT to burn out. I went to my local Walmart, bought the Sylvania brand 3157 bulbs for ~$5.58 and replaced it on this warm and beautiful Sunday afternoon. Sure enough, one of the bulbs was ABOUT to burn out due to the glass having some feint, black residue inside the bulb. As with anything automotive when it comes to "pairs" or a set, I've always read that when replacing bulbs, ALWAYS replace then in pairs and that's what I did. After replacing both taillight bulbs, I turned on the ignition and the "broken/not working taillight" symbol was not illuminated on my dashboard anymore. Thank you for providing this simple video. It saved me, I would estimate if I had taken it to a mechanic, probably ~$50-60. A $40 "diagnostic" fee, and $20 for the bulbs. 🙄🙄

My 99 le has the left side of the trunk "sunken in" as well. I know mine is due to the panel gap on the left side but is this a natural occurrence?

Thanks for watching, this commonly occurs when the support brace or insert is removed or not positioned correctly.

why not replace both of them..the other light usually goes soon afterwards.....

  • @JimmyTheGreek2000

The rear lights are easy to replace in the front and rear lights of the Toyota Camry LE (1997, 1998, 1999).
However the electrical mirrors (left and rights sides) are a totall disaster as they do not fold-in for protection and are very hard to replace when broken, which happens very often in parking lots and undreground garages. In adition, the mirrors are expensive by comparison with the lights.

So I changed that exact same bulb because I had the same problem, butttt the light doesn’t come on when I hit the breaks but the bulb light does work. What could be the problem? Because the bulb before wasn’t even burnt out it actually works but doesn’t when I hit the break. Only the right side just like this video, but the bulb is fine.

Good morning, welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Its possible that your connection point itself has a bit of corrosion buildup inside.
We recommend disconnecting the black negative cable from your battery to cut all electrical power to your vehicle. Next, you can carefully clean the electrical leads on your connection point.
If that does not work, you may have an issue with your wiring. Inspect your wiring to see if there are any signs of stress such as melting, frayed, or damaged wiring.
If all looks good, check your fuse box inside your engine compartment, The fuse that feeds power to your brake lights may be blown.
