I have had my Yaris Cross for just over a year. It is nice to drive (better than you might imagine) and frugal on petrol. Cold weather affects the main battery, so restricts fuel consumption, but I have never had below 60 mpg and 70+ is not unusual, even in British summer. Road noise can be a bit intrusive, especially given the appalling state of Britain's roads, but the real bugbear with the car is the 12 volt battery that runs the tech that operates the doors, the alarm, the parking brake, etc and most significant, the ability to start the car. If you take extra long holidays or use the car infrequently, the battery will lose its charge and becomes immobile. You can't even push it because of the electronic parking brake. There is a jump start point in the fuse holder under the bonnet, but my recommendation, if you buy one of these cars (and I believe the same problem occurs with other hybrids and EVs) and use it infrequently, is to buy a solar charger. Amazon, for example, will sell you the AA Solar Charger, which plugs into the EOBD socket, under the dashboard above the brake pedal, for under £30.
It's actually not a CVT, contrary to what Mat said. It's an eCVT, and despite the name, it couldn't be more different. The toyota eCVT is rock solid reliable, apparently.
It's an eCVT, with power split device, a completely different system from a CVT. Yes the old Toyota hybrid has an actual CVT, but the modern one doesn't.
I have this car since 2023 , I average 75 mpg for driving as I’m very careful on how I drive , it also tells you your driving score and I’m always in the 80s , better than an EV my range shows over 500 miles , takes me 3 mins to full up and off I go, acoustic glass . They 17inch wheels are awful on the road went to 16inch must better
I was a passenger in an older version of this car and didn't have a great experience. While the newer model might have some improvements, in my case, the transition between electric mode and the engine was quite rough. Accelerating quickly from a standstill caused noticeable shaking, and the pickup for highway merging was underwhelming, even with the electric motor's assistance. Additionally, when driving on the motorway, the car felt like it wanted to roll around corners, especially in the back seats. It doesn’t seem well-suited for highway driving and requires a cautious and easy approach in the city. Having been in other Toyota hybrids before, I expected better from this one. Personally, I don't see the appeal of these crossovers and think the standard Yaris Hybrid would be a better option.
Last years model, manual with only petrol engine. Similar experience although it does ok job, nothing glamorous though. Cross is better for shitty roads, parking on curbs and gravel... basically a normal non-western Europe experience xD
@@hassyg4083 Hey look, you don't have to get all defensive. I was just sharing my personal experience, and I know it might not be the same for everyone. I was just saying that, in my opinion, it doesn't quite feel like a driver's car, and I expected a bit more since it's a Toyota. No hard feelings!

Finally a car reviewer acknowledged how cheap and tinny many Toyotas feel. My dad had one and the ride was worse than the Jeep Wrangler I had at the time.
EV mode button is for moving the vehicle short distances like in / out of a garage etc without starting the power unit, Leave the EV button only, stick it in D then just drive it & let the hybrid system do the work.
I have no car of my own and not even a motorcycle. But, can't a miracle happen so that I could buy this car for my father while he's still on this earth? It pains me that he's aging and he's been a responsible father yet he is aging and never owned a car. I wished to succeed early and afford him even the cheapest car i can get but, life is life. I am one of those sons who still love their father too much while many sons tend to ignore dads and their efforts for mums.
Okay "EVs are heavier." Just did a 220 mile round trip across Yorkshire in a Hyundai Ioniq 5 - a proper 5 seat, house space, incredibly practical tank of a family hauler - and it would have cost £16.58 LESS in fuel than this tiny little hybrid, using Matt's numbers and my electricity tariff. Only car journos care about how sporty a car feels.
Who changes their climate controls often? I set mine to auto and never touch them again. Only the temp, which is right on the main screen, gets adjusted.
This is a good update. Toyota got it spot on. Yaris Cross Interior/Exterior design 9/10. Power Unit 9/10. Performance 9/10. Overall Score 98/100. A buy for sure. Practical and Value for money.
Honestly, I don’t really feel like the interior space is all that different from a regular Yaris-it just sits a bit higher, like a lifted version. Looks bigger, really isn't in the inside where it counts.
@@mkristofic Idk, when i tried it and compared to regular Yaris, the difference was like night and day. Boot is very good ( could carry 2 boxes with plants, while Yaris could not even 1), rear seat headroom is just enough for me not to hit a ceiling ( in regular Yaris i had to sit like a question mark symbol) and ground clearance is perfect for not to fear hitting something with bumper. Cross version is even still fun to drive. Sound insulation could be better though and arm rests softer, especially on doors.
Using B mode in a Toyota will increase your fuel consumption, it is only for use to provide engine braking on a steep descent. It has no effect on regeneration.
I've got a load cover like that on my 2021 model Yaris Cross. You don't have to select EV mode as the car goes into electric drive whenever it can. Forget B mode, I've never used it.
Test drove the Toyota Premier, top of the range, Yaris Cross against the Nissan Juke N Sport hybrid. The more powerful motor in the Premier was a huge improvement over the older115 BHP. Interior was poor compared to Juke which was more solid, better seats, much better digital dashboard, storage (surprisingly large glove box, centre armrest cubby) , infotainment (the around view camera was a fuzzy affair compared to the crisp screen on the Nissan) , ergonomics (the camera button and several others are hidden under the right hand side dash, I had to open the door in order to see them 😀) etc. Expected the Jukes 19 inch wheels (why Nissan?) to be awful and was pleasantly surprised by the better ride and body control. Toyota 10-15mpg better than the Nissan, as well as other positives like roof rails, powered tailgate, warranty, sun roof option, through load and centre cup holders etc. In the end the Juke just seemed like a larger more solid, planted on the road car that I would rather spend time in, showing the importance of long test drives. 👍
i ve driven the yaris cross multiple times (pre facelift), and yes you can drive it very economical, but sometimes you rather have the feeling it's a dacia than a toyota, the interior is extremely cheap made. you got almost 0 sound isolation. the doors feel cheap while opening and closing as well as the trunk, there is no electric sunroof available, the seats give 0 support. i could live with all of that apart from the really bad seats, but considering the price...i mean wtf...i really like SUVs, I don't need one i am not driving one but the price is just sick, you get a corolla sw, for moreless the same with a smoother engine, way better sound isolation, seats, interior quality, space and trunk space... I like the higher seating position but it's not worth the price. i would not recommend driving a toyota hybrid in b mode unless you really go downhill, cuz the regen stays the same, but the engine kicks in and supports to slow down which feels weird and is not very economical.
Why are people still buying New cars/vehicles. for such ridiculous prices. Why can't people learn? A vehicle the size of a Yaris should be is about 12 to 15K max. If people stop paying the manufacturers wouldn't have any choice but to reduce the prices so....... Waste of my time making comments now. RUclips have decided that. pointing out. stating facts is against their policies.. such as them controlling who sees Jordan Peterson's videos.
That car is as basic as hell and the tinny sound of the doors closing is a disgrace. I looked at these but ended up buying a 6 month old BMW X1. Far superior build quality.
I checked it out and decided against it. Depending on how it is adjusted, it either has an almost usable back seat or an almost usable trunk. I do not understand why every car is cut so short.
It used to be my family car. Easy to drive, have a simple centre console, got good mileage, and well designed. What I don’t like about it is such as, rear seats are bit small and won’t be reclined to the fullest, though these are not big deals. Overall, it’s the most cost efficient car of all other similarly sized vehicles.
For the same reason I'm glad I bought the new CHR. Incredibly driver friendly cars, economical and easy, but also fun to drive. And all of the above at competitive prices!
It's almost like it's small, usable, affordable, efficient, and a Toyota thus reliable, and NOT an overpriced, unusable, unreliable EV, and thus that's why people want it.

Hard plastic at touch points ? Dark miserable interior and a CVT gearbox. No thanks
It's actually not a CVT, contrary to what Mat said. It's an eCVT, and despite the name, it couldn't be more different. The toyota eCVT is rock solid reliable, apparently.
yeh don't need that 10 year Toyota warranty might just get poor unreliable German crap
E CVT is literally just motor generator and planetary gears.
e CVT is different with CVT. similiar power delivery tough, but more reliable than regular cvt
It's an eCVT, with power split device, a completely different system from a CVT.
Yes the old Toyota hybrid has an actual CVT, but the modern one doesn't.
Because it's a Toyota & Toyota make reliable cars unlike the Euro junk..

Why r these 2 comments, bots?
I have this car since 2023 , I average 75 mpg for driving as I’m very careful on how I drive , it also tells you your driving score and I’m always in the 80s , better than an EV my range shows over 500 miles , takes me 3 mins to full up and off I go, acoustic glass . They 17inch wheels are awful on the road went to 16inch must better
Now this is what I needed today!

UK car prices never fail to amaze me. £25k for an entry level trim is wild. In Australia we pay the equivalent of £23k for a fully optioned top trim.
9.6 is not bad 😊
Compared to what?
As a Swede, having snow and crap half the year, I really like these 4x4 from Toyota... Might just trade in my Golf Alltrack
Cross is better for shitty roads, parking on curbs and gravel... basically a normal non-western Europe experience xD
you were a passenger but you're talking like you were the driver? are you a VW dealership? can you give Toyota 10 year warranty too
@@hassyg4083 Hey look, you don't have to get all defensive. I was just sharing my personal experience, and I know it might not be the same for everyone. Whether I was a passenger or the driver shouldn't really change the perspective I was giving. I totally get that for most people, these things might not be a big deal and that it's a perfectly good car-after all, they wouldn't sell so many if it wasn't! I was just saying that, in my opinion, it doesn't quite feel like a driver's car, and I expected a bit more since it's a Toyota. No hard feelings!
cause in europe everyone love a small, useless, cramped, slow, yunkbox machine :) Thanks god i left the continent and moved to china where I drive a 670 hp zeekr 007 that smoke ya'll
My Parents got a Yaris Cross in 2022 - it's Japanese spec (We're in New Zealand) so it has the cool individual displays for the gauges n stuff. They Love it.
Mat doing Limp Bizkit was not what I expected today 😂
Finally a car reviewer acknowledged how cheap and tinny many Toyotas feel. My dad had one and the ride was worse than the Jeep Wrangler I had at the time.
EV mode button is for moving the vehicle short distances like in / out of a garage etc without starting the power unit, Leave the EV button only, stick it in D then just drive it & let the hybrid system do the work.
my sister is thinking of getting a car, do you think this car is good first choice?

@@Apnachannal1234why on my comment
I would say so… for a first car
Any car is a good first choice, all depends on your budget and purpose and type of use
No, it's a bad car. Extremely loud.
Great fuel economy, reliability, durability, resale value.
Okay koreaboo chinaboo
@@jxxxxx44 which means?
@@timaustin2000 🤓👆🏽
How much does an Ioniq 5 cost? Hmm...
no German car can do those mpg. toyota hybrid no plug in required
3:27 That cool physics teacher voice
It's a big Yaris, I love it. Good choice for a someone who wants to buy their first car.
The average first-time buyer does not have 27k...
35K for a Yaris - Jeez !!!
15k cheaper than a VW
I've got a load cover like that on my 2021 model Yaris Cross. You don't have to select EV mode as the car goes into electric drive whenever it can. Forget B mode, I've never used it.
4:44 there is a crack in the center console. Poor build quality. Mr Watson you missed that.
It’s a trim gap
Okay koreaboo chinaboo
that's not a crack, that's a seperate panel. at least I suspect it is. Quite a few cars have that
You are correct. Two separate panels.
Shutline between two trim panels.
Doesn't seem that bad of a car, but I would definitely pick VAGs competitors, Kamiq/Troc seem 2 segments higher despite being in the same one
The T-Cross would be a rival for this rather than T-Roc
@@jdmguy44 yeah, Tcross, kamiq, arona, all of these B-segment crossovers
Go 4 it. Yaris will last way over them.
VAG's can't give the warranty long as Toyota
@@hassyg4083 as far as i googled both give 3 year basic warranty and 12 year corrosion warranty, in both cases you can extend it for extra cash
i ve driven the yaris cross multiple times (pre facelift), and yes you can drive it very economical, but sometimes you rather have the feeling it's a dacia than a toyota, the interior is extremely cheap made. you got almost 0 sound isolation. the doors feel cheap while opening and closing as well as the trunk, there is no electric sunroof available, the seats give 0 support. i could live with all of that apart from the really bad seats, but considering the price...i mean wtf...i really like SUVs, I don't need one i am not driving one but the price is just sick, you get a corolla sw, for moreless the same with a smoother engine, way better sound isolation, seats, interior quality, space and trunk space... I like the higher seating position but it's not worth the price. i would not recommend driving a toyota hybrid in b mode unless you really go downhill, cuz the regen stays the same, but the engine kicks in and supports to slow down which feels weird and is not very economical.

Savagegeese and Car Throttle.
Nobody is actually buying one aside from cab drivers! Quite underwhelming interior and design is off!
Now nobody in the UK can’t sell the parcel shelf for alcohol or drg money - try finding a used car with its parcel shelf
That car is as basic as hell and the tinny sound of the doors closing is a disgrace. I looked at these but ended up buying a 6 month old BMW X1. Far superior build quality.
But that x1 will depreciate like mad, and unlike this yaris, your wallet will be emptied eventually in typical bmw fashion
@@MrDamburgerBut you'll drive a BMW. Way better than a tinpot Toyota.
So you sacrifice reliability n price bcuz the door closing is a disgrace in your words?

@@Real_Jcan I don't think you see the difference between a Yota and a BMW.
I checked it out and decided against it. Depending on how it is adjusted, it either has an almost usable back seat or an almost usable trunk. I do not understand why every car is cut so short.
Toyota 👍👍👍
It used to be my family car.
Easy to drive, have a simple centre console, got good mileage, and well designed. What I don’t like about it is such as, rear seats are bit small and won’t be reclined to the fullest, though these are not big deals.
Overall, it’s the most cost efficient car of all other similarly sized vehicles.
Here in the ASEAN market the Yaris Cross also popular, the hybrid version is certainly the best seller just like the Corolla Cross
Video idea : can u do a full self driving drag race it will be very interesting
