You never trust a line under tension like that. I have worked on the water for 13 years. I have seen a guy lose his eye because the line snapped and slapped him so hard in the face that it popped his eye like a grape. He had safety glasses on, and those got shattered. He broke his nose and eye socket, too. So it is ignorant as hell to stand near that line.

y'all are so dramatic, snapback with a rope this small and with only a few feet of its length being used, especially on such a small boat, would not kill you. if it was that dangerous the ferry would never allow people to stand there. mooring line snapback can certainly be deadly but we use UHMW line which is designed not to stretch and snap back as hard, and in this case the worst you'd get is a broken bone or two

@@nautron100 they also have a load of tourists who have no clue about anything they're doing. I don't work with boats, but I work with high tension belts and hydraulics. Even if it's a new belt, you don't spin it up without a guard in place and then stand right next to it. You don't put your fingers near the hydraulic vises on the big saw even if it seems to have stopped when it got to the metal you're cutting. You don't put your fingers near the brake press while the hydraulics are pushing down even when it acts like it's stopped, especially if you hear lots of pinging or creaking. You don't stand near the tow rope when you're pulling your buddy's truck out of the mud. Wanna know why? Because even if it's new, even if the chance of failure is low, the chance that you *don't* get absolutely messed up when something breaks is too low to be worth it. Even the smallest hydraulic can crush bones. Even the littlest rope can remove fingers or eyes or tear you open.

Hmmm, I don't see either anchoring either component even beginning to flex or show signs of weakness in any way. I believe that each component has been engineered and tested to be in use today. Ask OSHA. The rope of course is also not something that you buy down at your local five and dime or hardware store. However this place might sell these type of supplies. But this rope has requirements it must meet in order to meet safety standards. There isn't any doubt that calculations have been made and this rope's ratings are considered before purchase. Yes in some cases people do not follow safety guidelines and things happen. The rope is by far the weakest link and justly so. For this can easily be replaced if and when that time comes. Which unless there is an order to change out at certain dates this would be still in use for years to come. I think the point of the video was to show how this young man had his job down pat. And how he put just the right wraps on the rope to gently and smoothly come to rest and then opened the gate to help passengers off the vessel.

It's the tension in the rope, if it snaps someone is going to be seriously hurt or even killed. There are children standing there.

When a boat rope snaps back, it can travel at speeds of over 1,200 kilometers per hour, which is faster than the speed of sound. This is due to the sudden recoil of a mooring line that has failed under tension. The force of a snapped back rope can be enough to kill a crew member who is standing in the snap back zone.

@@gearswarrior902 Are you serious?! The rope is at best 5 feet long. I tie up cruise ships and cargo ships in the Port of Vancouver. I know my sh!t. I've only seen one serious line recoil on a 2" thick line stretched about 200' between the ship and dock. No one was near but it took out a dockside voltage panel, a life ring stand and made a huge dent in the line crew's truck..... Learn about what you are talking about.

@@Ghostontherun There is almost no tension on that strong rope. They do this every day and many times a day.....

@@panther105 Just because the rope is much much stronger than the tension, that doesnt mean "there is almost no tension on the strong rope"
Tension is a force. Force doesn't disappear just because something its exerted on something strong.
