Great video !
You might want to mention up front that there at least two different types of drum brake mechanisms for the 07 - 13 Silverados. One does NOT utilize the large blue spring clip and brake pad does NOT come with the parking brake mechanism attached to the brake shoe . . .
One of the best do it yourself videos I've watched. Its great how the mechanic and cameraman worked together for better views. Thanks for all your videos.
The best video for these style drum brakes on a GM truck I've seen..
Agreed, watched a couple others this is an easy job. I am glad I didn't waste $25 on the tool that some recommend. Not needed if you are mechanical.
i’m 16 never had a dad or someone to teach me this you explained it really well all my friends said it would be hard and take forever i had both sides done in 30 mins thank you for this video

no you didnt
Thankyou. All you guys at A1 are the best. You have saved my day several times with these videos.
I hate brake drums.
Same
Sameeeeeeee..lol
Hey this could be much worse lol like drum brakes from the 70's
Try a 1 ton drum 🤕
Thank you thank you thank you thank you......I now have my truck back,.... first time I ever did Drum brakes in my life....couldn't have done it without this video!
Removing the respective Park Brake Cable from the Park Brake Equalizer was a great tip for reinstalling the cable through the shoe spring. Also, if I had it to do over, I would re-use the original spring set instead of buying a Dorman replacement set. The OE version seemed higher quality and was still in good shape.
I like how he didn’t speed anything up and showed you how to take everything off and then put it back on.
+Juan Loza Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Great video. I got hung up on my brake cable part- outstanding tip on unhooking the cable at the junction
Took me 3 hrs but i got it
1A has always been the GOAT of automotive repair tutorials. Especially for GM trucks.
Thanks for the video. The big spring is a real pain. I found it easier to remove the worn shoe opposite the parking brake while leaving the big spring on the one with the brake cable, then replace the shoe. Next remove the parking brake shoe and replace it. Doing it like this helps hold the spring in place and made it much easier for me to use the needle nose vice grips I had.
I'll have to try that next time. On the plus side, if you do want to disassemble the whole thing, I think you could do so in about 10 seconds once the drum is off. I've never seen brakes that come apart so easy. It's just a pain getting it all back together. One thing that helped is squishing the pistons in first thing. Obvious in hindsight.
I can’t wait to try to do this tomorrow!! I will be doing step by step with this video😍
I have to give BIG thanks to you guys. I just swapped my drums and shoes in 2.5 hours thanks to your video. Most of that time was just being cautious on the first side. Thank you, Thank you!

This video is far and away the single best ever produced on how to complete this job on this equipment. Excellent production and camera angles where you can see exactly what is being done. Awesome and very helpful hints such as Loosening the parking brake linkage to easier thread the cable and bullet into the spring and arm. I struggled with this job greatly trying to use several other sub par videos as reference. Thankfully stumbled upon this video and it was a game changer. Job finished. I also like the tip at the end on better prefitting the brake drum. Great job guys! Thank you very much.
Thank you. Absolutely the best how to video ever I owe you big time bro.
Thank you for including the emergency brake cable instructions.
it's really helpful I have 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 and this video help a lot and I wish I can see more item in the future for my truck to repair thank you for the video and the website easy to use and to purchase fairly good price part and tools 1A Auto it's the best

The video was spot-on made it very simple the only thing I could say is unhook your parking brake first it makes it a lot easier to unhook the bullet head for the parking brake
I just did the brake replacement and I'll say that getting the parking brake reconnected under the cab was frustrating. I got my son to pop that bullet back in while pulled the front and rear cables together. It had turned into one of those "need 3 hands tasks."
Great video guy, its a trick for this type of rear shoes brakes, very well done and explained,
This is the model for which all how-to videos should be made! Excellent videography, great angles, close-ups, lighting, no distracting music or jokes & puns, etc. Very relaxing and a pleasure to watch all the way through. Oh and clever use of the hose pliers. There are actually very special tools for all those different springs, but you didn't need any of them! Great job and THANK YOU!
I have no idea how 7 people didn't like the video, very good explanation and camera work for a great video! Thanks

5 Stars! Wish I would have watched this one first! Great Job!
You guy are great. I'm going to use you every time for my silverado. Thank you!
Great video! One thing that I did differently was to use my straight jaw needle nose in line with the bullet with a jaw on top of it and the other underneath its housing to easily free the E brake cable from the shoe...I really appreciated the tip on popping same cable loose from the junction and pushing it through to gain slack for reassemble. Who da thunk! Thank you!
Ty very helpful. I never did the back drum brake’s. Got my work truck back on the road. 👍🏻
You should have use brake cleaner to spray down the pad surface area after you got grease and dirt all over them. This will cause some damage to your new drum and brake pad surface. Other than that it is a good video of the removal/install process.
+Murrica Motors Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the great video, idk why people hate drums, this was a very easy repair to follow
Man, your video got me threw a job i hate. Props to ya for making a good video!
Great video. I use needle vise grips to hold the Pbrake cable
+PlatinumLawnServices Thanks for watching! Yes, locking pliers always save the day! :)
Super helpful thank you. These were the exact same brakes on my 2005 Silverado.
Your videos are always spot on, and sometimes they literally bring me back from the brink of insanity. The only thing I would suggest on this video is an update to the description. It says 07-13, it should include 06, maybe additional years as well. Your video for 99-06 has rear disk breaks. I'm working on an 06 right now with drums entirely identical to these. Luckily I knew to look at other years to find these drum brakes.

So what kind of tightness are you looking for with the brake adjuster?
Nah man!! You did this so easily 😂 great video!! Did help out
Thanks for the video I now see that I'll let someone else do it but yall have the best price for it so I've ordered from 1aauto!
You're better than 1A Auto videos.

Excellent video! GM has really designed these to be super easy. Thank you.
+WBOS72 Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
GM shouldn’t have been scumbags and made them rear discs like every other manufacturer that’s using this century’s technology!
@@cfltitan drum brakes have plenty of pros over disc. Especially on pickup trucks.
You make this job look easy.
Great Video and How 2, Thank You Very Much.
Like the hose clamp pliers trick
Absolutely amazing lecture. Thank-you.
Thank you so much that helped me a bunch
What kind of hose pliers are you using and where can I buy them ?
thx you guys always good info...hey. but how to do the other side?
I pray the best for all y’all
Can you use silglyde on the contact points?
Great video guys
+Slicko559209 Thank you!
Great job buddy👍

Buen trabajo me ayudó mucho gracias de parte de Juan
You may want to tell people to use some brake cleaner to cleanup the drum and shoes before putting it all together. The last thing you want is grease to be between the drum and brake shoes. I've seen drums come with a light coat of oil to prevent surface rust.
Brake cleaner removes grease!
Awesome video👍
Best videos on RUclips!
Do you have a link for the ones with the emergency brake mechanism. I can’t find them anywhere.
@17:30 when your turning the drum left to right & making adjustments with the screwdriver, what exactly are you feeling for??
Why are these brakes different from the other Silverado drum brake video you have with the same years? I don't get it. Which years use which brakes?
+MrCoffeekelly The procedure will be the same given the year make model and specifications match. We are updating our videos and using better equipment to try to give a better look into how to make various different repairs
@@1AAuto I understand the procedure is the same, but why are there two different types of brake drums on 2 of your videos for the identical year and model truck?
After review of the videos, it appears the first video from 2013 the OE drum is being placed back on the vehicle while our new video from 2018 is using a new rotor. However, the design still appears to be the same. We apologize for any confusion. +MrCoffeekelly
@@1AAuto nope. 2 totally different brake configurations.
@@MrCoffeekelly I get what you're saying the amount of springs in the first video vs the big W shaped spring clip in this video and I would agree 2 different configurations
Thanks for the video, it helped a great deal. I bought the parts from you guys earlier this year & finally put them in today.
Thank you for the video!!!
Do you need to bleed the brakes, or do you have to do it when you change the calipers.
( I have a 2012 chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 )
I was hearing a squeak and I thought it was a wear tab. When I pulled the drum off the pads and drum were in decent shape but there was a ton of dust. I assume that the squeak was caused by all of the dust.
Does anyone know if you can purchase just the blue spring clips? I have a recently purchased truck but one of the Blue springs was broken
Nice video

Awesome DIY video, thnx!👍
Super useful video thanks a bunch
Hello there I am having trouble taking mine off. I did this I also taking mine off. It’s been 3 days I can’t remove it I soaked it and hit it with the help can you help me please. Thank you so much Darlene dunigan
Might be a dumb question but is there any way to do like a conversion from drum brakes to caliper disk brakes for the rear?
+Daniel Fuentes We do not have a video on how to do a conversion of your brake type. We would recommend talking with a local mechanic as they should be able to help assist in this type of conversion.
would the brakes self adjust if I dont set the adjuster correctly?
Would bad shoes cause grinding noise while driving and a softer brake pedal? Hoping it's not the shoes stuck against the backing plate contact points.
+Fish 4 Fun Thanks for watching! There could be multiple reasons why they are grinding. We recommending you inspect them and make sure they are adjusted first. 1aauto.com
Adjuster screw was laying at the bottom of the drum.
Thank you so much the parking brake was stumping me
Are the shoes supposed to sit on the ridge where you wire brushed the back plate. Or are they supposed to sit flush with it?
Whew! I think I'm let somebody do these for me😄
What is the part of the drum brake that you never took off? My bleeder valve screw broke the threads on the inside of the bleed valve connection
Would this be different on a 2006 gmc Sierra 1500?
Dp drum brakes on these trucks seem tp wear out quicker?
Good video.
Is there a way to tell what style pads to use without having to take the tire/drum off?
If you are not sure of what brakes you have then the best bet is to remove the brake shoes and drum and take them to the auto parts store or measure them and that will tell you the correct size. Make sure you take pics as you are removing things and replace in reverse order.
Just go to your local autozone and they can look up your vehicle and tell you
What would happen if I forgot to install the little bracket washer that goes on that screw thing in between the shoes?? By any chance does anyone know? And would it be okay till I get one?
Good tutorial, but I'd always recommend replacing the springs with new ones. Especially on the drums since on these trucks, the drums don't need to be changed that often (I think most people wouild get about 100-150k out of a set of drums brakes on these trucks because the fronts do most of the braking). It's just a few dollars more but you don't really have to worry about old springs breaking. Just my two cents. I'd rather spend the extra $50 for two new spring and hardware kits than have to go back in there in a year and replace the hardware again later).
+Heelix Ranier Thanks for the feedback!
I got 203,000 miles out of mine. I only replaced all of my hardware because the orange spring distorted during removal and the adjuster was seized, the blue retainer is solid though.
I have a question my 07 is leaking fluid from the back driver side wheel it is brake fluid do you know why its leaking

my gmc 2010 serria had i different drum brake set up.
Michael Dewitte yeah same.
Yes, you're vehicle will have a different set up. +Michael Dewitte
Great video, but that adjuster mechanism should have been taken apart completely cleaned up and re-lubed.
great video
What torque wrench are you using?
Numero uno asi deberian explicar los mexicanos pero la triste realidad Esque son egoistas un aplauso para los americanos mis respetos me sirvió de mucha ayuda gracias
Did the design of the shoes change?
My head is exploding after watching this...great video but I’m crying thinking of having to change my shoes. I have changed many disk brakes and never owned a drum brake before this truck...who the f*** designed these mousetrap clockwork brakes and why?
Good Job
great vid however it is not necessary to remove the wheel cover just the center cap
Did the brakes on my grandsons 06 siiverado.went good but those springs were like fighting a grizzley bear
how do you get the cable in the other side parking brake lever lock ?
This don’t look too hard to do. Maybe I can do this by myself. But I would have to replay this video before I do it.
I am the original owner of a 2007 GMC Sierra "Classis" with now 90,000 miles. This vehicle has this type of braking system and has been nothing but problems in which I despeately need some understanding as to WHY... I've had to replace the brake shoes "6" times and the drums 3. The first time I noticed issue with the rears the vehicle was still under factory warrantee and changed by the dealer with no reasons as to why this happened. Since that time, I've changed them using 1A Auto parts, a service outfit and the dealer have all had a crack at them. Still no understanding as to why....HELP???
Not to take away from the video.... but my 2012 silverado is set up a little different
