- Bayern Munich scraped past Rangers into the second group stage of the Champions League with an unconvincing 1-0 win. Rangers dominated the match and hit the post three times but lost out during a five minute spell in the first half where they lost Michael Mols to a season-ending injury and conceded a penalty to Thomas Strunz.

when i was wee, Michael Mols was my fave player :) i cried that night
I remember watching this as a child. So many great players in that Rangers side but Mols was my favourite.

i remember this game so well! i was 15 at the time.. the home game was bad enough when they got a last minute equaliser through a deflected free kick! BUT this was heartbreaking at the time... to go there.. to do that to last years and this years finalists... and to miss out one one point to a penalty that was virtually saved ..never mind the hitting woodwork 3 times!
I'm sure Kahn himself described that as his best ever save.
That was the previous May, they went out to Madrid in the semi finals this yeat and won it the following year (2001)
Rangers were really unlucky that year to be in a group with Valencia and Bayern, who were (with Real Madrid) two of the three most consistent teams in Europe at the time. We still shouild have qualified. Only diabolical refereeing denied us a deserved win in the earlier home game with Bayern. If we had got through I think we could have made a real impact in the knock out stages. Possibly the best Rangers side I've seen.
I'm a Celtic fan but even i felt a touch of sympathy for Rangers that night. They deserved to win, probably by at least 2 goals.
Ranger man here, I always hope ALL Scottish sides do well in Europe but I still remember that night. Absolutely gutted after the final whistle. Had them hanging on for dear life at times.

@@steviebaxter8127 yeah I did a bit, not too much but a bit, I'm one of those really strange fans who like to see Scottish teams do well in Europe, particularly if they play well against a class opponent and deserve to get something out of the game. That doesn't apply, of course to old firm derbies and the SPL in general.

Bang on bud!. Mols was amazing and the funny thing is if he came off we had someone in Amato who should have been given a chance at rangers. but Mols was a joy and prob wont see his likes again.
Back then we got some great results away from home in Europe we will be back of that im sure.

Rangers should have taken 6 points against Bayern abseloutely dominated both matches, a last minute free kick ended the match at Ibrox in a draw too :(
this was back when rangers were generally outplaying teams but still losing. this squad was better than any man unted squad of the 90s. teams started parking the bus. parking the bus and making the game physical & messy/scrappy was the way to beat this rangers team. Bayern were lucky not to concede 6 by playing open. they were leaving huge pockets of space in the midfield.
true but when you watch the highlights you'll see Rangers dishing out a thorough hiding!!

I'll never forget Kahn's save, maybe the greatest of all time. The in goal camera gave a great view of it.

Fuck why did I watch this I remembered Gio hitting the post but had forgotten (banished to a tormented corner of my mind) all the other near things. We would have needed the genius of Mols in the next phase tho, heartbreakingly he was never the same again. This Rangers team was 1 or 2 players short of being real contenders.
Oliver Kahn made his most impressive save that game at 5:40 he even stated this himself.

Was unsure at the time why Dick didn't put Amato on instead of Johansson for Mols, more of a man for man replacement....Mols was shredding them that night. Unless he just wanted to change things up a bit? I dunno.....

If Wallace wouldnt have pulled out of 50/50 clearly backed of Unlike Mols who went in Horrid landing ruined what was going to be very bright future Mols had potential become real world class, looked comfortable mixing it with europes top players That was one best european performances from Rangers from my era v great Bayern team Almost and Munich knew were in real game Kahn saved them from defeat Ive no doubt Mols didnt get injured he wouldve rattled Germans net He had them sussed

Gutted for Mols and Rangers. Football can be so cruel. To think all Mols did was try and get out of the way. He shouldn't have, just jump and land as you would, but he straddled Khan, who won that game
