      Truth. Your time is valuable and sometimes it doesn't take long to realize you don't want what you thought you wanted, or that the reality of the path to your "dream" is not fulfilling you. As long as you keep trying and are willing to apply yourself when you find the next thing :)

      Yes! I think you should give it a fair shot, experiment a bunch along the way, and quit when you're sure that you don't enjoy it anymore. You've gotta know the difference between a bad day and a dream that's reach the end of its road.

    I really like this aspect of minimalism - being content with where you're at. Materialism can easily overshadow your dreams, making you think you need to go big or go home. While there's value in having a larger impact, you can be content with your impact at any level. Think about that small band you like or that stellar local restaurant - both aren't huge, but you get a ton of value from them.

    I can actually relate to this. If you told me 5 years ago that I was gonna be a software engineer, I'd probably laugh my ass off. I didn't have a degree in computer science but I've always wanted to get a job related to computers. 3 years ago I started studying by myself, it was tough since everything was so foreign to me. But fast forward to now, I am now working as an engineer in one of the biggest tech companies in our country. Am I the best guy in the company? Hell no, but what's important for me is that I finally made it where I've always wanted to be, and that for me is already a huge win.

    • @RockDavid
      @RockDavid 3 года назад

      Honestly i think that was HORRIBLE advise,if we go in thinking we are that 90% that will not make it wouldn't that just turn out that most just fail..so why try?
      Anything i do i go in as the top 1% mind set that its all or nothing as O-town said.
      I like Elon's idea on this he said at an OIL meet up long ago
      "If you are going to create a business or idea, make sure at min. it is 100% better than the current best idea or product, and no matter if your bed is a floor or a mattress keep the mind set your GOING to make it and don't slow down"
      I have read a few books on the mind set as well, Neuro programming type of books that have proven if you go into something already mentally feeling you have been successful and made it, you have ideally already laid the foundation of success and now its no longer "IF" but its "WHEN".
      Ether way, anyone going in thinking they are 90% not going to make, save your money and time your going to fail because you started off not even believing in yourself. If you can't believe in you, who can?

    • @FurtherYourLifestyle
      @FurtherYourLifestyle 3 года назад

      @@RockDavid i think it also comes down to the definition of "make it". Success should be defined by yourself. What makes one person happy, wont be the same for another and also how they see, feel and be successful will also differ. I agree with you David and your points make sense. I think the 90% comes with some context with it. As to your point "why try" - well a lot of people do and are successful and will make it - where many do not! And this can be due to not willing to go the lengths of grind & persistence to keep on keeping on, (pivoting, adapting, sticking to the process, understanding you why or even understanding your end game) and others don't make it on the basis of what someone else has defined as successful.

    • @battlewithintraining
      @battlewithintraining 3 года назад +1

      @@RockDavid I don't think that's the advice they are giving. I think what they are meaning is that if you commit to something and chase a dream. You need to be okay with things not working out, but they don't say that you should strive to be "average" they are saying if you commit to something and put in obsessive work things still might not work out how you want and that's okay. The people he showed as an example were two people who dedicated 3 years to their podcast with daily hardworking and chasing to make it to the top of the business and things just simply didn't work out. They never planned to just be average. Hope this helped.

      We do have an self-alleged cultural theme we label “tall poppy syndrome”. In the context of success, Uber success or plain good fortune, it just means the idea that if you get big enough here, then somehow you “deserve” to be “cut to size” - that’s the negative version. The positive is that self-aggrandisement is quite often looked down upon i.e. “I’m going to be the best the world!!!” (mind you, we DO love it when Australians win world champions/Oscar). Like it’s okay to think it, and work toward it, but NEVER to say it out loud. Maybe that’s what the comment at the top of this thread is getting to. But people are people. A lot of the supposed differences like above are not contradicting cultural behaviours. IMO, they mostly flow from different linguistic styles ie. The Australian accent “sounds chilled”, like the German accent “sounds harsh” (even when telling a joke). I don’t think there is any REAL difference relating US to Oz, impacting local individuals attitudes about working hard, obsession, perfectionism, education, talent and/or luck and the weird combinations of that which creates the MJs verses all the suburban basketball teams, described in this pretty funny analogy...

Too often (and I’m guilty of this myself) we fall into the trap of wanting to monetise our hobbies or passions, but - is that really necessary or the end goal? The process of showing up and learning as you go already opens up more possibilities and opportunities you would never have thought of if you hadn’t just started. So... enjoy the process! 🙌

    This is a great video Matt! Thank you. My Dad (who’s in his 70’s now) always says that being contented is the most important thing. Some guy will always come along with the bigger boat and the faster car. But if you’re happy with what you have that stuff doesn’t matter. I love all of your content but this video really resonated with me. Thanks for reminding us of focusing on what we love being more important.

    One of the biggest lightbulbs I got from “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” was this obsession our society has with Exceptionalism. If you do something it has to turn out to be the BIGGEST, the BEST, super SUCCESSFUL, and all those things. When in reality, it’s more than great to be the “best basketball team in the suburbs.” That’s freakin life man, if you’re happy with what you do then who cares what others expect/want from you.

    This is actually the video I needed right now. For about 1,5 years now I am into filmmaking and photography. My dream is to make a living off of it. As you pointed out it is always difficult to look at the long term goals. I was struggeling a lot lately and had a lot of selfdoubt.
    For example I uploaded a few videos on youtube and I think they turned out pretty good. But then I see the numbers and get frustrated even though I try to ignore them as hard as I can.
    But you are right. Even if my dream doesnt come true I still had fun along the way. But Ill keep trying my best =)
    Cheers!

    Awesome video as always man!! I followed this mantra everyday since I started changing my life after going to Thailand in 2018. I now have a small video business and was able to quit my job at walmart. I make about the same amount I did as I worked there. But the work is so rewarding and I get to meet amazing people all the time and feel like I am in control of my life. It took me about 2 and a half years to get to where I'm at. And I wont stop. I always try to inspire others to go for what they believe in, because you can fail at what you dont love, so you might as well fail at what you love. Life is so much bigger than we think it is. And once you find out that you have the power to be anyone you want to be, you open up a whole new life for yourself.

      Most of the people want to have a job that pays enough and isn't making every day full of suffering. "Chasing your dreams" is unreal for 99% of the people. I find this kind of channels quite disconnected from the real life.
      For most people it's not the matter of "Living the life you always wanted, achiving your dreams and being fullfilled" but rather "desperately trying to make your life not extrimely miserable"

    Thank you so much for this video, it's an important message!! :)
    I'm still young but I have a big dream.
    I want to work as a clothing designer in my own clothing store. But I want to be COMPLETELY different from any other clothing store. I want it to be the most eco-friendly possible.
    I'm talking about green factories, some in my country, some in developing countries. In the same building as the factory in there would also be a mini kindergarten and a school (don't worry about exposure to pollution, as the factory wouldn't produce almost none of it), so that the kids could be learning while their parents work. (I tought about wayyyyy more details but I'm not going to write everything here, it wouldn't fit 😂)
    Also, green transportation of the clothes to the consumers, green pacaging, green eveything haha.
    I would try to pay a good amount of money to everyone that worked for this.
    I would have tons of campaignes to different causes, both social and ecological, too.
    My dream is probably impossible, but I think about this e.v.e.r.y. single day. I hope I don't give up, but honestly I don't know.
    Thanks for reading and have a good day ❤️
