This is NOT a mutt/purebred debate. When I am referring to backyard breeding, I am referring to people who intentionally breed their dogs without doing any form of health testing. Purebred or not. If someone wants to breed mutts, but they've had both the parents health tested, that's truly fine by me. I had a dog that was "backyard bred." He was purebred. He died from a genetic health problem that could have been avoided had the "breeder" health tested the parents. If they had, they would have known that both parents carried a gene that could criple/kill their offspring. Backyard breeding is not mutts vrs purebred, it's ethical vrs unethical.

People really can't wrap their brains around an ethical mix breeder. Like they OFA health test and everything and someone will still call them a byb but when it comes to purebred people always think "Nah they're perfect and the breeder is excellent." just because they breed purebred, even with zero genetic testings.

Throw some Shiba in there and you've basically engineered the biggest problem dog ever. Not because Shibas are bad (they're great dogs if you know how to handle them), but because Shibas have their own form of stubbornness (less "I want to do what I want to do" and more "I'll only do it if there's something in it for me, and you can't tell me otherwise") AND their own form of high intelligence (less command learning and more problem solving). You'd end up with a dog that will only ever do anything for you if you bribe it, and will inevitably get itself into trouble constantly.

I take my husky border collie for 2 hours in the woods and about an hour playing fetch daily. Probably walk like 3 miles a day scrambling through thick woods.
He doesn't mind missing a day if it's really nasty out but 3 days being pent up is about the limit before he starts acting up inside. I've spent a decent amount of time training him to be calm inside the house.

I THINK H&K (one husky, one high content wolf hybrid) said his boys go for 8 mile walks every day or they go into furniture-eating mode. I'd imagine it'd be something similar for this guy.

    • @mikewhitman745
      @mikewhitman745 2 года назад +9

@@GilraenTook it's all in the training. If you train the dog to be calm inside it'll be much easier on you. Malinois are supposed to be super high energy, hard to control blah blah blah but I've seen plenty that are calm inside the house and get energetic outside while not acting out.
I don't get why people think you can't control a husky border collie, if you can't train a dog than maybe don't get one?
My border collie husky has literally never eaten any shoes, sock, clothes, furniture, remotes, garbage or anything even including his puppyhood. He does what he's told, he's easy to train, he's athletic as all get out, he's a problem solver.
I would recommend the mix to anyone who knows how to train a dog and doesn't want an inside dog to sit and watch TV with all day, although mine stays in the truck for 6 or 8 hours a day while I'm at work so he's alright with lazy time as long as he gets to run every 3 days or so. More than 3 days pent up and he doesn't destroy anything, he just wants to play in the house more.

@@GilraenTook no, I got that. Did you misread my comment?
I'm saying if you train the dog to be calm inside it'll be calm inside, my border collie husky is calm inside and wants to play fetch and expel energy outside. He's never acted up inside destroying anything because it's been storming for a few days and he hasn't been out as much as normal.
A properly trained malinois will be calm inside and not all neurotic eating furniture.
The 5 or so wolf dogs I've known through friends have all been calm and didn't need 8 miles of walking a day to keep them from eating the house.
Maybe basing your thoughts about these dogs off of what sounds like either a special case or a poorly trained dog isn't the wisest thing?

That's not actually true. Mixed breed dogs are just not tested for all the things purebreds are. Purebreds seem more sick because we know about their problems. But not knowing does not make mixed breeds healthier.
If you do same tests to a mixed breed as to a purebred, it's very likely the puppy has similar broblems as both the parents breeds would.
Like if you mix a boston terrier with a bernese mountain dog, do you think the puppies would be completely healthy without inheriting any problems?
Also true breeders, who breed with the dogs health in priority, need all the testings to make sure the litter's parents create the most healthy puppies. With people who breed mixed breeds just for fun, they could very easily breed two dogs with the same problem and make the puppies have it even worse.
Now if there was a breeder who tested their dogs and did all the things properly but with mixed breed dogs, to create healthy puppies? That would be great.
Unfortunately that is rarely a thing. A few years back when I was looking for a dog (ended up with a mixed breed rescue) I found a website of a breeder who bred short-haired collies with two other breeds, to make puppies that were healthier than all three of those breeds and with the temperaments of them combined. I thought that was really cool, she talked a lot about all the genetic stuff and whatnot so she really seemed like she had fully researched to know what she was doing. She might have also bred purebred dogs in the past so a certified breeder. It bothers me that I don't remember her kennel name.
Also my bad for not knowing the proper terms for things, English is not my first language.

It's the "you need to pay attention to me, remember I could be biting you to force you to do this" behaviour from their herding instincts, they just put their teeth on you and don't chomp down unless they are reacting defensively to something which is usually easy to train them not to do if they are domestic dogs and not working dogs since you don't want them to snap at a child that goes for the tail or face like they would a farm animal or predator being aggressive towards them or the herd.

If you ever actually go to Alaska and look at a sled team, they look nothing like what people envision as a "huskie".
Behaviors are by family, not "breed". The dog has been around for 20,000 years. Their behaviors aren't based on appearance anymore than humans are. There's plenty of genuine research on this.

The owners did a really good job socializing and training that dog. He seems very tuned into people and calm enough to suggest that he gets enough exercise and discipline. The farmers we buy meat from have an Australian shepherd mix with a similar personality.

I had a Husky Collie mix too was a great dog that would run for days if we let him or just run with you if you had a motorcycle out in the woods. Cancer got him but this video reminded me of him so much it made me super happy and sad at the same time. He had a heart of gold but was the biggest troublemaker ever. Everyone and their dogs tried to steal him and eventually my brother and his wife did. Then he really got spoiled.
Thanks for the video it brough back a lot of found memories!

When you said most stubborn, pit bull came to mind. Mine was dumb as a rock and never gave up trying to outsmart me-constant source of hilarity. Yours is an exemplary animal and a good argument for making that mix a new breed.

I have a border collie/husky mix and she is honestly a dream of a dog. She aims to please and picks up on commands, cues, and tone of voice VERY well. She's incredibly smart, talkative, and loyal. They make amazing dogs if you train them right and find out what motivates them. She keeps my husky in line lol

When I was a pre-teen, I had a pure breed border collie. He was the best dog ever. So smart, learned fast, energetic but laid back too. I had so much fun with him. With husky in him, I expected a song but the tap dance made me fall in love with him. If I was still a teenager, I'd get another border collie in a heart beat.

My family recently adopted a border collie puppy cuz my stepdad wanted help with our sheep since I was in college and my siblings moved out. She's only 5 months, but she is one smart dog. She'll harass you with her frisbees, but she will also tolerate everything and already knows most basic commands. Meanwhile my German shepherd hound mix just whines at you until she gets pizza or her walk in and only listens when she benefits.

I had a Husky and Collie mix. He rarely barked, because he chose to talk (Yes, real words. Plenty of Huskies talk). He was also a fantastic escape artist and loved to do things to make my mother laugh. He was the smartest dog I have ever encountered, and he was a stray! It was definitely a blessing to have him in my life.

He is a smart dog. My dogs dad was a St Bernard / Border Collie. He’s very independent. Mom is Anatolian/Pyrenees mixed with Australian Shepard. He’s almost 1 and just started refusing to come inside for bedtime. Acts like a toddler and goes dead weight.

I have this mix mine in only 25% husky but he can be very stubborn on walks want to be sosical and wants to meet everyone dog or person though sometimes a little suspicious he still wants to sniff them before moving on.
very kind and obedient when we are alone and despite the husky he almost never barks and I have never seen him howl or *talk* he just become 1 year last month. He is very calm inside(mostly) though he can quickly get very excited and playful if we do some activity/play where he can’t stand still but surprisingly manages very well when we have to take a quiet boring day and don’t get restless easily

Our husky cross "tap dances" too, when she is excited. Her "I want something" is to leap about two feet straight up, like levitating. We call her the binary dog, she is either ON, 100%, or OFF, out cold.

I had one of these, she came from Idaho, she was mostly white with cream. Her owners had to give her up as a puppy because they couldn’t take two dogs. At any rate, she was my heart dog and insanely smart and very strong willed not absolutely obedient only when she felt like it. She got nasal cancer at the age of 9 that spread to her brain (fast growing) and hid practically all the normal symptoms so we had no idea. I miss her very very much.
