Aw :( this made me miss my sister's pom, Bella. She had to be put down because of complications from her collapsed trachea, and I haven't stopped missing her since. Sometimes we'll still find her long blond hair around the house, weaved through our chunky knit clothes and jackets, and we'll start missing her all over again. It's nice to see a pomeranian smile again, even if it's not Bella

I have his favorite blanket sealed away with his hair on it❤️ when i first lost him i knew I couldnt wash it than..and about a month later i knew it would be best to put it in a box and keep it🥹 its been a year now and i still laugh, smile and cry when remembering how great of a dog he was!

As soon as she started talking about the dry, goose-like cough, I immediately looked at my smallest rescue. This makes so much sense now. Well guess who's going on a diet? 😂
you should still mention it when you go to the vet because they might want to look at risk factors and how your dog is doing with it
+ to the vet. My mom has a 13y.o. pekinese with this condition and also flat face that make it hard to breathe. She recently got medicine prescribed, that in theory helps her get more oxigen into cells and help her be more active and feel better. Sadly, at her age, and withount enouth medical supervision before, her trouble breathing affected her lungs and then her heart in an irreversible way. But there are mesures to help support her heart then it gets even worse, that prolongate lifes of dogs with her conditions and make is easier. Those things also may be preventable if you consult vet and give her support for breatimg available before it severely affects her lungs and heart.

A friend of ours has an older Yorkie, then rescued a deaf Aussie mix. They were the same size (7-8 pounds) when they got the 8 week old Aussie. By the time she was 9 months old, her "big" brother was able to walk under her. But they are very loving and protective of each other. Dogs aren't as concerned about differences, we should learn from them.

This surgery should be conducted by an American College of Veterinary Surgeons board-certified veterinary surgeon. In it, extraluminal tracheal rings or intraluminal stents are surgically placed around the dog’s trachea to keep it from collapsing.

I have tracheamalasia, a collapsing trachea, and it sucks. It’s super hard to breath, as a human, and I can’t imagine the issues with a puppers. The puppers are so cute!!

@@hollyeasley2928 as a human, I have to uses a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine, or more commonly called a CPAP machine. I wear it when I am having trouble breathing or when I am sleeping. I know when dogs get really bad, they sometimes have to go into oxygenated cages, but that’s not always a long term solution.

My pom/yorkshire mix has a slight form of tracheal collapse and you're SO right about the dry cough being a noticeable symptom!
I brought her to my vet when i noticed that she was coughing a lot for some days. My dog is always under control (always walked her on an harness, eats healthy food and is on her perfect weight with good exercise), but some other dogs suffered a lot because of this condition and didn't receive a fast diagnosis due to negligence of their humans (words from the vet). Please people, if you notice something different/wrong with your dog, check with your vet asap!
My dog has dry heaved a few times today.
Should I be worried.

I can only advise you to ask your vet about it if your dog is still coughing a lot tomorrow/in the next days.

Yes, you should have your pet checked by a Vet. It could be an allergy also but best to verify.

Luckily, as i previously stated, my dog is always under control (and is well taken care of). She has other conditions as well due to the abuse of her previous owners'. I adopted her from a local shelter when she was almost 7 years old and my vet said that there weren't great chances for her to pass the 8 year mark...but she's now 14 and even better than years ago. Her tracheal collapse is totally manageable for now, let's hope for the best :)

Omg ive never heard of ‘collapsing tracheae’ before. Our chihuahua sometimes cough after playing outside. We all assumed that its just asthma. Thank you for this information. Will definitely bring it up to our vet on our next appointment 😄❤️

This made me think of my mom’s friend’s Chiweenie (Chihuahua and Daschund), who had a collapsing trachea. She lived a long life, and her trachea started collapsing when she got older. She had the goose honk cough too. She was a very sweet dog, unfortunately, she passed away a little over a year ago. Rest in piece, Maggie. 💔

My grandma had a Pomeranian, sweetest dog I ever met. Never growled at or bit anyone. A “not a mean bone in her body” type dog. Whenever you post a video mentioning them I’m reminded of her. I still miss her all these years later.

Aw, they're so sweet. It's funny that Wally was more worked about Rogue's bath than she was. And I did not know about collapsing trachea, poor Wally. But it looks like he's doing pretty well.
I came back from Portugal after a 2 week holiday and our 8 year old Pom couldn't look at me without honking for 2 days straight, bless him.

Many years ago my cocker/poodle (runt of the litter) dog was diagnosed by the local vet as having a "heart cough." After a year of cough medicine (and maybe heart medicine - I can't remember), I took her to a nearby university with a veterinary school. They did a fluoroscopy swallow study, took her off those meds and said she had a collapsing trachea. Now my pets go there for anything other than routine shots..

We have a Chi and an Akita, and it's amazing how much they absolutely adore each other. The Chi does have the goose-honk (although our vet calls it a reverse-hiccup), just like all the Chis we've had. The solution at the time, when they're coughing and struggling to breathe, is to hold their nose for a few seconds until they stop trying to suck air in - that allows everything to resume its normal shape/position, and then they carry on from there.
After a few times, all of our Chihuahuas automatically came to us as soon as it started happening, and didn't struggle at all.
If it is reverse sneezing then your dog isn't in danger. Though I've never heard of a reverse hiccup! Reverse sneezing is not harmful to the dog. Sometimes our sweet girl "forgets how to breathe" you can do some searches on youtube to see the difference, but there's a very characteristic stance dogs take while reverse sneezing. My dad swears by "holding the nose" technique but usually I just try to comfort the dog and it is soon over.
That makes total sense. We had a Chihuahua and she would do the goose honking. I had no idea it was because of her trachea but since I noticed there were indications of trouble with breathing, I would hold her and firmly, but not harmfully, press just below her rib cage. She would honk once or twice after that, but then it stopped. I never knew why until now.

I had a little PomChi that I fostered for almost a year. Twelve years old, his name was Scrappy and he was just like a puppy. He was too protective of me, though. He’s with a good family now and a little boy who loves him to pieces. I miss my little “Scraphole” (that’s what my family called him. 🥴)

Thank you for talking about collapsing trachea. My 15 year old Yorkie poodle mix, Hercules, died from that in July 2021. He had the coughing issue for a few of his older years, but he was always very happy and full of life. His death was very sudden, one day he was good and the next he was fighting for his life just waiting for me to get home from work so he could say bye to all of us as a family. I wouldn't be here anymore if It weren't for him and I miss him everyday.
