Same here in Mexico. This was our first US election outside of the US and it was far less stressful. And yes from the outside looking in you can definitely see that regardless of what happened the system is broken. If you look at our comments you see Americans at each other’s throats and we just haven’t experienced that in other countries when they have elections.

The stress felt in the US is from the country imploding. The middle class is disappearing. Necessities like healthcare, insurance, a home, and a college education are unaffordable. The country is ruled by greed where fundraising and campaigning is the main function of politicians. Our children are taught to practice hiding from active shooters in schools. Women’s rights are being stripped. People don’t feel safe in the US; that’s why they’re stressed.
I remember when the US was about the middle class and small businesses. Now every single town is exactly the same: Walmart, Starbucks, Target…all monopolies owned by a handful of billionaires.
I closed on my new home in Costa Rica on Friday and will bring my children there for safety. I’m leaving behind friends and family who live every moment in fear. My heart breaks for the people who have to stay.

Yes I believe it’ll get worse not one Individual or party will fix the issues in the US , massive corporations and big money run the show and there’s a club that only a select few multi billionaires and top is leadership are privy to and a part of , unfortunately that’s the way it is and the American are all just pawns in the game of massive money…….so the politics and rhetoric are fed to us as a pure distraction to keep us off balance and as long as the tension between the masses is all about red and blue and what your party has messed up over the last four years …….they are winning the game without a lot of effort ……

    Great discourse Michael & Jeanne.
Many of the points about living in the 2 worlds, the one I grew up in, and my new life here in Costa Rica, are much as you described.
Very difficult to explain about the culture of the Ticos to anyone who’s never fully lived here for a long period of time, how the Ticos think and behave about certain issues that are all so important to many people in those countries many of us left behind, they find themselves wrapped up in their whole lives……..what your politics are, your social standing in your community, what you have and who you are or were in your career, that’s how you picked your friends, or they picked you.
It is not what the Ticos judge you or anyone on when they meet you or you become friends or a simple acquaintance.
It’s just not the first thing they want to know.
You also become like that as well after a few years, when you meet someone, which I have, some very wealthy people, both Tico and foreigners, that I call friends here now, they don’t care where you are in your financial standing.
Many of these people where money is king, soften a lot after living here, the people you like aren’t always the people with lots of stuff and a big bank account.
    Very refreshing!
So on that closing note, let’s leave the outside worlds politics out of our discourse for a few more years, we can’t do anything about it anyway and talking about what you believe or I believe, is irrelevant, but as you can see from the early comments, some people can’t shake that world and bring it here to CR, or move here because of it.

I enjoy political debate in Costa Rica, regarding domestic and international governments. I have gotten into some fiery (but respectful) discussions and have learned a lot. As a U.S. citizen who VOTES, I think it is important to keep up to date with U.S. politics, no matter where I live. All of my family and the majority of my friends live in the States, so what happens to them is extremely important to me. My trans, gay, black, brown, indigenous, poor, immigrant friends matter to me. My female friends and their rights matter to me. It is possible to be politically active and maintain balance. My husband is active in Costa Rican politics and it is very frustrating for him because typically, Costa Ricans vote for the party, not the person. If the political panorama shifts somewhat, whatever one president did, the other undoes and real change never effectuates.
Shifting gears... my Tico husband and I have been married for a little over 30 years. We have been through a lot and almost split up when our boy was small. We shook it off, got some help, and were too stubborn to let go! Our secret? Respect. We treat each other with respect. We do not yell, name call, accuse, insult, none of that. If I am so upset I can't control my words or actions, I distance myself until I can verbalize like an adult what is going on in my mind and heart and he does the same. Empathy, kindness, gratitude, generosity of spirit, intimacy (not just physical), maintaining a sense of humor, looking out for each other, and honoring the love and commitment in your relationship are the pillars that will support you. And it helps if one of you (he is) a fabulous cook and loves karaoke (me)!

The Costa Rican mentality of cutting in line, corruption, all the red tape for building and road construction and all that Costa Rican crap he now sees how messed up it is.

Lost my train of thought there. My point was politics is very different in Costa Rica compared to the USA, and you can see why. Costa Rica politics are so overly corrupt that nothing gets done ever.
USA politics even though they are very aggressive things do get done for the most part. Maybe more at State level vs Federal.

Not talking about politics and religion leads to ignorance and segregation. That is how america ended up in this mess. If Costa Rica is doing the same, they can expect the similar results. Also, the Ds went insane with Russophobia, massive social media censorship and gross perversion of the justice system to destroy Trump and the political opposition in general. Anyone who cares about govt abuses already knows about those things, but at minimum we all should reflect on the fact that a federal cop deliberately shot and killed a small, unarmed woman from ambush/without warning and suffered absolutely no adverse consequences. On the contrary, he was celebrated as a hero and promoted! Wouldn't a cop in any other jurisdiction in the US have been put on trial for manslaughter or murder?
