Very impressed for someone who has no knowledge you did well! Little tip from my master Sea-Doo technician do not mess with the carburetor and less you know exactly what you are doing if your mixture of air fuel and oil is not exact it will burn up that motor in a blink of an eye. The coldstart is absolutely normal that’s why they have a choke so no need to mess with that I would absolutely investigate you’re wearing and jet pump next because it requires maintenance if it has been sitting. There is a rebuild kit it is very simple if you have a manual to rebuild the bearings in that pump so I would highly recommend that. Also your oil pump is something that works and then it will go out without any notification that’s why it is recommended to block it off however if you choose to keep it I have encouraged my customers over the years every year rebuild your carburetors completely dairy simple kit follow the instructions and you will have no problem while doing that replace the oil pump very cheap very easy to install. And lastly buy a compression gauge and check the compression of your motor frequently keep along if you start to see a massive drop in compression consistently over a couple of rides it is usually a sign you have a major problem going on and will likely soon result in catastrophic motor failure. The normal compression ratio for that 787 motor is 140 psi no less than 90 psi. Outside of that you are on the right track of finding those replacement parts Hydro turf makes excellent seat cover and seat replacements as well as mat replacements with peel and stick design. I look forward to following the channel and seeing what else you do with this I am very impressed not often do you find one that has sat for that long and operates without issue!
It’s not hard to tune a 2 stroke man. Just close all the tune screws and crack them counter clockwise about 1n half turn. If it’s still rich then one more full turn should be at the right air ratio. Anything more than that will lean out the cylinders and fry your pistons
Wow! This is my kind of project. Take something totally abandoned, fix it so you can start having fun with it, and then, with time and patience, bring it back to it's old glory (or better, bring it up to what you want it to be!). Love this channel.
yup - typical ski-doo! just keep clean fuel in it and do the regular maintenance. and keep extra spark plugs on hand; like in the machine - nothing sucks more than a fouled plug in the middle of a lake!
Was just about to say the same thing. You can look on the SeaDoo forum and get the adjustments for this card. I'm sure its probably close if its running that good.
I had made one of those comments and you are so amazing for admitting the wrong you took it as positive and didnt make up a excuse like you know everything. Mad respect to you man not to many people like that anymore. If you ever want to ask anything hit me up can give contact info to you. I'm In Clearwater also have skis if you wanna ride.
I’ll be over at treasure island next week for family vacation. (Also to test out my electric beach cart). Won’t have the sea Doo because it’s current tore back apart for paint and other upgrades. I head over that way quite a bit. Might take you up on that offer sometime. Sounds fun!
I'm near Clearwater and looking at 2 project skis possibly. Both are 2005/2007 seadoo gti/waverunner vx. Done some motorwork and general car maintenance, worked on some bikes with my dad, but never touched a PWC. We'll see.
I have just watched some of your videos, you asked for advice. Clean the vinyl with a mix of sudsy ammonia and water, let it sit for a while and scrub with white scotch-brite. Change the rims from painted to galvanized on all your trailers, also upsize your rim and tire size.More efficient for gas savings, put in bearing buddies also; you will thank yourself. Enjoyed your videos, very well done.
The look on your face showed it all when you seen it run bud that there is a great feeling! That’s the feeling that you just wanna chase with every project!
I dont know if you still reply or not but dont feel bad or embarrassed. And its not a mistake . We all have our knowledge on certain subjects . I just started watching your channel and love your can do attitude. I do Marine repair for a living but I am not a Jet Ski tech I have worked on them but I am no expert. Please dont be embarrassed or feel ashamed . We all learn all the time keep up the good work don't change a thing
All the old skis start like that your lucky you found a free one good job saving it ps your not going to hurt it reving it up on the hose don’t let people scare you have fun with it I enjoyed the videos
Check the compression ratio on the cylinder head and that fuel selector should not be turning all the way around and I worked for seadoo in south africa capetown and also becareful with auto lube system for the 2 stroke oil I would rather keep most of the 2 stroke oil in the auto lube tank but put some 2 stroke oil in a separate petrol tank and pre mix it for the main fuel tank. I suggest that and also make sure the auto lube tank feed line doesnt come off because if that engine doesnt get the oil u will seize that motor quickly and throw a rod out the side of the block... keep it up buddy u doing very good with the ski and I'm loving the 2 stoke video because we dont see alot of the in south africa... be safe on the water way...and can u please give a shout to me from south africa 🤟🤟
Dont worry about the oil block off kit. I just did one to my 96 yamaha but only because it was smoking pretty bad. Now that i can mix my own fuel it doesnt smoke as bad, just like a normal two stroke, i assumed the oil pump just started feeding too much oil. It used to look like a locomotive frieghtraining down the railroad haha.
That Milwaukee 3/8 electric ratchet is a bad ass ratchet. I use it as a professional in the automotive industry. Could not even tell you how many engines i've taken apart with that thing and she's still chuggin along. Mine needs a good bath though haha.
Make sure to check the wear ring in the pump. If the ski is not leaving like a rocket on takeoff and sounds like it is slipping it is a worn out wear ring. Shine a flashlight in the intake of the pump and see how much light you can see get by the impeller. Those skis had a rubber liner on the wear ring that will start breaking off in chunks. Good luck with the ski.
The yellowing brownish stuff on the gel coat comes right off with toilet bow cleaner called snowbow or the works try it it comes right off then u can wax it
Wow I just picked up a couple of 96 seadoo XPs. They had sat for many years , looked just like yours (planters lol) . I would be happy if I could just get one of them going.
Nice project. I went down the same road when I purchased two 2 stroke Seadoos 97 GTX and 98 GTX Limited a couple months ago. No engine or fuel problems, just small maintenance issues I had to work on. I knew nothing about working on skis but I’ve learned a lot the last couple months. I love mine. As for names my kids are Marvel fans, our 97 GTX is green so we named it Hulk and the 98 GTX Limited is a dark red with more horsepower so we named it Hulkbuster. Nice ski enjoy your riding
Is there a big difference between the 97GTX and the 98GTX Power Wise? I recently purchased a 97GTX and l love it so far, now that I've got it running and on the water its been a fun, quicker that I expected(its by no means fast I know) ski for its age and size.
Derek Hamaker Yes. My 97 GTX has a 787cc motor and its current top speed is 54-56 mph. My 98 GTX limited has a 951 motor but speedometer don’t work but it’s got more power and it feels way faster with full throttle even to the point I back off in the throttle, sometimes feels too fast when water is a little choppy.
That’s awesome that it’s running so well for you! As far as the stutter in acceleration, the fact that the choke corrects it means it’s running just a little bit lean. Back your high speed needle out a bit (very small pinches, 1/8 turns at a time) until it clears up. Make note of where you began before you start making adjustments!
That hiccup issue is pretty common on 2 strokes, sometimes takes a few tries to get er started. 4 strokes are way more reliable and economical. They're also significantly sturdier.
It requires Seadoo Rotax Full Synthetic 2- Stroke oil. He uses some cheap s*** in this video. Rotax 2-Stroke oil is about $50.00 a gallon but well worth it for performance and engine protection.
If the stumble is always there, that means it’s probably the low speed circuit adjustment. Adjust it for the highest idle. If the stumble is after its been sitting a minute or two it’s more likely a delay in getting a good fuel supply to the carb, when could be a weak pump or an air leak in your fuel pickup and fuel “in” hose
Weld up the pipe. It’s done all the time. Disconnect the cable to see if it’s the cable or steering shaft. If it’s the cable just replace it. Wsm or sbt for cost. If it’s the shaft, you pull it out and clean up the crud. If there’s plastic/derlin shaft tube you can sand it some to get more clearance. Sometimes the plastic swells.
If you're having problems on startup have you tried adjusting the tick over screw? They can be quite troublesome recalibrating a carburettors but I'm sure you could figure it out! Good luck and have fun out on the water!
My experience with premix, if you have to do it, get "the cup", it'll greatly simplify your life. Secondly, you never know EXACTLY how much gas you need to add, so you never know EXACTLY how much oil to add. I typically do it in increments, which is a little tedious but more accurate. Not for or against, just a little insight into the joys of premixing.
Make sure you rinse it out and wash the inside and out after every use if in saltwater. You will rust it out if not. Make sure to replace your anti slip rubber. It is there for a reason.
If you are having problems with cavitation or the hole shot aspect and acceleration you may need a new wear ring / liner because there may be gaps and air may be getting past too much
The issue with having to choke it after it is started so you can go without it stalling is the low speed screw setting. The service manual should specify the number of turns it should be, it may have been bumped during shipping.

You need to be in at least 3 feet of water before you start it. you need a wear ring and file the impeller. its like a 100hp vacume with tight tolerances so any rocks with ruin it. You will have way better acceleration
If you didn't just have the carb rebuilt I would have said switch the air box with a k&n air filter because I have cracked 2 carbs. The reserve is just a fuel line that goes from the bottom of the tank
Honestly I’ve always been told to leave the oil injection on a season, also ONLY USE OEM SEA DOO 2 stroke oil, anytime I’ve came across a sea doo that didn’t use oem sea doo oil it never ran right at all. The reserve is basically just section within the tank
If you don’t want water on the running boards tip the trailer up so the water can drain out put a tree stump or a Bucket or brick you can use to rest it on when not using
See the problem with that is if you decide to use the crap outta them the suck gas down like like it’s beer so it just better to keep it on for convenience
#Polsky_Dave The stock Seadoo oil injection system is quite reliable and should be kept ..... running premix just uses way more oil than necessary and the mix ratios are always off when adding oil after a fuel fill up.
The reserve tank is the same as the regular tank the output for the regular tank is halfway up the tank to put out half the gas and the reserve is at the bottom of the tank so it’s like for riding you run it halfway out of gas then you go back home with the reserve
Let that electrical component completely dry good.& then test it with A multimeter prefred A very good one. If not A wal-mart digital one will work. Check the voltage on DC voltage switched band side aswell. I would get the wal-mart one to save money it comes with instructions inside on how to use them also.
You need to align the arm on the oil pump to be at the correct position at idle so that it gives the right amount of oil at full throttle. On my old 657x (same block as your 717) the pump arm had a notch in it that lined up with a notch on the pump to indicate the idle setting. If you leave it unhooked and free it will just run the oil mix wide open as a fail safe. When you run it on the hose if you just put a quick disconnect on the fitting you can pop the hose off before you shut the motor off to prevent filling the motor with water. You’ll want to replace the wear ring to solve it being slow out of the hole, and at least do a pump oil change while you have it off. Check out seadooforums.com for more info and help.
The reason that its smoking is that’s is burning all the old oil and fluids since it’s been setting for so long if u want clean the exhaust or leave it it we’ll be fine
What should I name the Seadoo? Every boat needs a name......

A good word of advice. You should be running Seadoo 2cycle oil only in it. There is something in the oil blend that helps the engine last longer.
Just bought a jet ski just like this one. Had been sitting for awhile. This has been super helpful and inspiring. Thank you
The hiccup hesitation when throttling at fist is a basic adjustment on the low side of the carb.
Was just about to say the same thing. You can look on the SeaDoo forum and get the adjustments for this card. I'm sure its probably close if its running that good.
For the graphics, how about themed on what's on the wall of the garage. Then it will certainly be one of a kind.
Congratulations! Admire your willingness to "jump-right-in" to save this vessel. Going to find one myself and attempt a salvage/overhaul recovery.

When it bogging out and hiccuping it most likely need 2 minutes to warm up. My older 2stroke dirt bike requires the same
Its common for 2 stroke engines to stumble after a cold start. My yamaha gp 1200 is notorious for running rough until I get some heat in the engine.
Just a little trick I use. When you’re running it on a hose, I just bend the hose to cut it off, plug it in and start it, then let the hose go.
Probably should replace the wear ring that goes around in impeller
Yes I learned this after the ring exploded and got stuck in the impler
This is amazing 👏 🙌... great job brother..

The exhaust manifold and pipe are consumables, last maybe 3-4 years with flushing. Buying used is a waste of money. Cost about $1k new without labor.

Those knobs for gas on off and Rez are really hard to turn, u made it look easy usually I have to use vice grips.
Turn the fuel screw out under the throttle cable slide. On the bottom underneath carburetor down below the slide were the breather goes on.
You need to be in at least 3 feet of water before you start it. you need a wear ring and file the impeller. its like a 100hp vacume with tight tolerances so any rocks with ruin it. You will have way better acceleration
Add Sea Foam to the fuel it is an amazing fuel system cleaner and use only premium fuel.
Gonna want a new wear ring and carbon seal kit. The carbon seal looked worn
Wear ring probably could use a change should help it get on plane faster
Perhaps you should have read the comments here .....about the 2Strokes Engines do you have Kijjiji there ? good place to find parts
2 stroke who.would have thought..🤙good to know. I always look and work on sport boats ..my first sea do vid🤙
You need to run seadoo oil. It has a rotary valve that regular 2 stroke oils dont lubricate well.
Having to choke means it needs more fuel on the high side jet. Just bring that one out a bit and you should be golden.
Your see doo came out beautiful👍

If you didn't just have the carb rebuilt I would have said switch the air box with a k&n air filter because I have cracked 2 carbs. The reserve is just a fuel line that goes from the bottom of the tank
Using an aftermarket air filter can cause carburetor issues and lean conditions which can have pre-detonation be designed the air intake for a reason
A 3D printer would be a good investment for projects like these.
Check the wear ring or did u already do that it’ll give u faster acceleration

Hi,Better of deleting that oil pump
And premix 40:1 😉
Check your fuel lines
If they are still oem grey than replace them
See the problem with that is if you decide to use the crap outta them the suck gas down like like it’s beer so it just better to keep it on for convenience
Right 😉
But that ski is old plus it was parked under The cloud for X years
So The pump might stop working anytime
#Polsky_Dave The stock Seadoo oil injection system is quite reliable and should be kept ..... running premix just uses way more oil than necessary and the mix ratios are always off when adding oil after a fuel fill up.
Where do you order your parts from ?
What kind of pump were you using to suck that old gas out?
Just wondering if you checked the compression?

install water valve at the end of the water hose so you don,t have to run to the tap all the time
You need to align the arm on the oil pump to be at the correct position at idle so that it gives the right amount of oil at full throttle. Very good video
I'm going with the obvious Scoobiedoo
if we see a PWC ,and it says free, how do you know it's not a blown motor??
Keep it stock is my opinion. Pretty simple restoration so far.
I did like what u did on the speakers system on the jetski were did u gat then
The reason that its smoking is that’s is burning all the old oil and fluids since it’s been setting for so long if u want clean the exhaust or leave it it we’ll be fine
Definitly a minion decal should look nice.
What did you use to pump/drain the old fuel. Tired of the manual pump styles that don’t last long. Send a link please.
Bypassing the oil injection guarantees you won’t have oiling issues.... just mix the fuel right it’s really easy
you can start a jetski on dryland and run it for a few minutes without issue
Great Job!
