What do you think, if the government paid for everyone to have 10 free therapy sessions each year (as in if they don't need any one year they can then have 20 the next year) would that help people?
Ok, reading over that that sounds sarcastic but I'm being honest, do you think it would work?

@@justyce_yt but therapy isn't wasting tax dollars. it's helping people including people who need help but can't afford it. Or maybe instead it would be determined on how much money they earn each year (those who can easily afford therapy can pay for it themselves, those who can't afford to spend that money get it for free).

Next up, different modalities and what they may be good for. My first foray into counseling was 17 years ago after our first late term miscarriage where the abuse of my childhood really came to light. The counselor we found only used CBT. After a year with him (didn't realize I could switch and we were young and broke and on scholarship there) he declared me basically fixed and released me from care. After various life happenings over the last 17 years between a severe cPTSD flare that nearly got me on the psych ward, an unfortunate situation involving an in-law's room mate who threatened me with a weapon and now being widowed, I'm on my 4th round with a 4th counselor. I'm starting EMDR now (for the childhood stuff), have been looking into cranial sacral therapy and realized how much more effective a good trauma informed counselor is than someone who thinks it can all be fixed with CBT. I understand CBT does work for many things (and has in regards to my weightloss journey), but, in my case it was more like a bandaid and didn't fix what was causing the thoughts and what were actually trauma responses.
Going through all the different modalities that are out there for counseling, what each can help with and that it's ok to try different things would save others from having to search for something, anything to help and being left wondering if maybe since that method didn't fix me, that maybe I was permanently broken and unfixable. (Which, I am fixable and we're finally on the right path, I think, with an amazing counselor who not only specialized in trauma, lived it herself and understands my thoughts on treating this naturally, supplement use and diet and exercise to help instead of just relying on pharmaceuticals to fix everything).

It's funny how the Universe works. Last month, someone at work ask:
"If a professional like a Clinical Counselor gave a 15-20 minute presentation, What are some of the things you would like to hear about?"
    I suggested:
    - How do you find a therapist that suits your needs?
    - What to expect from a therapy session?
    - Do I need a Counselor, Therapist, Psychologist, Psychiatrist? What's the difference?
While I was very fortunate and matched up through the luck of the draw via my company EAP, that doesn't always happen.
This video covers off most of those questions, and in only 12 minutes! Can't wait to share 😊

Medi-Cal (poor people's government funded insurance here in California) has done a great job of ensuring I can access weekly therapy for nearly two years now.
Thru "California Health & Wellness" (the name of my plan) I found a great fit and I haven't had to pay a dime, even when in crisis and needing a second meeting in a week.
I am in full support of Universal Healthcare in the USA if it's at least as good as the program California has.

Can you please talk about dealing with intrusive thoughts? I'm usually good at keeping them out, but now that I'm pregnant it's almost impossible for me to control them. I panic and get anxious about everything - if I'm really sick or if I suddenly stop being sick altogether. It's exhausting and I don't want to live like that. My hormones aren't helping either. How do I deal with this?

First off, hugs. Second off, idk if you’re religious or not, but this is what helped me with my intrusive thoughts so I’ll share it in case it can help you. Basically I had a chat with God and said “okay, if the thought gives me feelings of panic or anxiety or terror, Imma assume it’s not from You, and ignore it” and basically we agreed I had permission to ignore intrusive thoughts and it helped a lot. I hope you find your mojo too! * Hugs *

This is very useful. I wish there was a one-page sheet that broke down what the different types of therapists are. Something like:
    Psychiatrist: can prescribe meds
    Psychologist: deals with personalities/cognition etc.
    Counselor: what does this mean
Therapist: what does this mean and how many different therapists are there?
Social Worker: a traffic cop that tells you where to go and where to get the resources you need etc.
And which one you'd need to find for what problem you have. So like if you have a marital problem....you need to find a couples counselor or marriage and family therapist. Because I don't know what to look for for what problems i have. Do you guys have a one page outlining this? Or perhaps something on your website for this?

It would be incredible if you could discuss having a partner who is the child of a parent who hoards. How to address the very real differences in functional standards of health, hygiene, mobility, scarcity, avoidance and prioritizing care and use on a practical timeline. Its a sensitive topic to bring up, and I love my partner and his parents and feel grateful to know such smart, warm, generous people. They live hundreds of miles away but we see them relatively often. I have stopped myself from cleaning while we’re down there since his father says it embarrasses her but it’s getting worse (dog feces, garbage piling up at doorways) but it’s still hard for my partner to discuss it with me openly. It’s like this bizarre shared blind spot for these otherwise lovely, high functioning, working people. Looking for a way to make him feel safe with feeling vulnerable to share all the feelings wrapped up in that, as well as build trust with him so I can (jointly if possible) coordinate cleaning and management of our own home in a way that doesn’t reproduce the same habits (I’ve been swimming upstream in hidden alcoves of Stuff/stuff to repair / magazines the past 5 years since I moved into his loft.)

My brother’s a psychologist (working with families), and has advised me to get a degree in Social Work for Undergrad, then switch to Psychology for post-grad. Because with his Psych degree, he couldn’t get ANY job until after post-grad, and now that he has his Master’s he’s BARELY started practicing. (But that’s in TN, not sure how other states are.)
I’m having to start college at 32 because of chronic illness. So… I *need* to have a job for adequate healthcare, and I don’t want to start my career at 40 (if I take no time off for having kids).
I don’t know if my heart will be in Social Work, because I know eventually I want to help people who have chronic pain and deal with the stress and trauma they’ve dealt with. But I do know that beyond that specific goal, I want to help people, and I’m not going to dive into anything that I don’t completely rock at.
Also, as someone who’s been in therapy on and off for decades (mostly the stress and trauma of chronic health problems, lol), the tip about not worrying about transferring is gold. It really is key. I found someone with all the “right” credentials, but her… manner was just off-putting, and it put me on my guard. I then found a wonderful therapist that I stayed with for years, until she retired. The next one? Was a man and he was almost… argumentative? He made me feel about two inches tall, sort of… questioning all my decisions, not in a “did you do this to self-sabotage,” way, but more like, “you idiot, how could you think this was the best call, you ruined your life!”
If that was my first taste of therapy I’d probably have run screaming and never come back! Now I’m with a wonderful woman and the visit is a highlight of my week. I’m always more energized, often happier, and never feel like I wasted my time or my money. I asked if it was crossing a boundary to send her the wedding video of me and my husband (because without her help early on the relationship may not have made it; he wasn’t used to chronic illness and I was very frustrated by his lack of faith and trust in me, or so it seemed) and got to show her this wonderful growth in my life that she helped promote. Yeah, I did the work, but she explained the workbook in a way I may have not been able to understand and work through in time on my own.
Psychology rocks, even now I’m working with one of the granddaddies of Behavioral Psychology, Jim Lemons, and realizing how far understanding the mind AND body rather than just one or the other, when it comes to helping chronic illness and chronic pain, it’s FASCINATING. In eight weeks he gives people tools that can break *decades* of suffering from pain. Do they still have pain? Yeah, usually, but it’s reduced, in part because they learn to manage stress in a way that doesn’t reinforce the negative feedback loop they’ve been stuck in since their illness took root. Changes lives like crazy.
I’m so hoppy mindsets are changing when it comes to psychology. It’s such a wonderful world of exploration and self-exploration, with so much power and potential to change lives.
We’ve been a world on pills. If we could become a world utilizing THERAPY, what a world it would be.

Can any one tell me why In the 15+ years and 5 different marriage counselors that I saw, only one of them ever even hinted that my now ex-husband was being abusive and that he had no intention of ever changing. One therapist kept telling me that I needed to honor my ex's spots (meaning that he was a spotted animal and I was a striped animal and we weren't going to change that about us) . I think now I was being told that my ex wasn't ever going to change without actually being told that. @catut7042 2 года назад +1

@@VioletEmerald I get that they can't tell me that I needed to leave him. That does need to be the individual's decision. However, when my ex out of the blue was screaming and yelling at me in front of the therapist to the point that the therapist had him go out of the room to calm down. I did tell the therapist that this wasn't new and that this happens quite often. I was asked what do I do about it and I said that I just sat there and apologized for what ever it was that I was being yelled at for and eventually it would stop. I was never told that this was abuse as much as if I was being hit physically. I'm not sure that my decision to leave would have happened then or not. But it would have given me some ammunition when I was being told that I was the problem and that my ex was just fine since the therapists would give me stuff to work on but not him. They were just trying to keep him coming in the hopes that he would eventually change. But I didn't realize that when one therapist said that we had been taught all the tools to do better and that we just needed to practice them at home that the therapist was basically saying that there wasn't anything more they could do and if things weren't getting better now they probably wouldn't ever get better. I guess I needed a bit more bluntness and less hidden meaning in what I was being told. My ex was the only one who was blunt with me and he would tell me how horrible and awful I was and that I was the problem and he was fine. I had no one else for a long time tell me any different. It was finally a church leader that just asked questions and lead me to say out loud the things I new to be true in my heart. That is what finally helped me to see how things were. Even then no one told me what to do. I decided that on my own.

I have to admit that I wish I’d have been told the difference between a psychiatrist and psychologist sooner, when I originally started, because I was quite frustrated when I got my therapist, but still had to keep seeing my psychiatrist (whom I didn’t much like). I just didn’t get why they had to be in the picture still.
And, honestly, it didn’t occure to me to ask about it, because I was not in a good place at the time and anxiety has been an issue.
Still don’t understand why they didn’t think to explain the difference to me, though, considering they knew it was my first time.

You get about 45 seconds with the psychiatrist before they move on to the next patient. But even the private practice guys refer you to therapists. I like it that way actually, I feel like I should have a separate relationship with the person managing my medicine and the person being my therapist.

Can you recommend how to go about finding the correct help, when you have been hurt by the process of looking for help? I lost my mom in a very traumatic and unexpected way 2 months ago and have been in a deep depression and have flashbacks and anxiety out of nowhere and can't predict my triggers. I went to see a psychiatrist because even though I've had anxiety my whole life my struggles these past 2 months are completely new and different and unmanageable for me right now. The psychiatrist just fixated on the fact that I've had anxiety my whole life and told me I have depression. Then she told me I need to go to talk therapy to figure out why I'm so uncomfortable with death. My family has grief therapy once a week together. And it has been helpful, but I haven't yet found help for the trauma of what I went through. It's hard not to feel so alone because no one else in my family experienced what I experienced and I feel guilty when I lean on them because I know it hurts them and it makes them worried for me. There's also a fear that I might have the same rare congenital problem as my mom that was discovered by autopsy, so when I'm having panic attacks it's hard not to spiral and think I'm about to die. But when I went to the cardiologist he told me I need to find a way to get over it. His exact words.

But going TOO specific can be problematic too. For instance...once you decide to search for a therapist...you first have to see which ones are covered by your insurance, then you have to look to see which ones are nearby (so you aren't driving for 2 hours to get there), then you have to search reviews and background to ensure they don't have any criminal background or terrible reviews and that they're experienced and have served satisfied clients, THEN you have to find someone you click with....and hope that they don't charge you too much. IF all of these stars align....you then have to ad the layer of finding your specific need. And that can be a unicorn. Like it's not realistic to find a therapist that specializes in ADHD, LGBTQIA, Anixety disorders, CBT, EMDR, talk therapy, etc. Soemtimes you just have to go with "close enough" otherwise you'll never find anyone and never get treatment. It's hard enough to find the mental energy when you're already deficient and depleted to even admit to yourself you need therapy, let alone having the energy and motivation to pick up that phone...and do all the necessary leg work and research it takes to get the right person to help you. This is the issue with the mental health crisis in this country. And the medical care system is always one step behind the need. And I wish there was just a one sheet that could guide you through the steps. Something like, "Here are the steps to getting help: first go to your insurance carrier and find a provider that is covered by your insurance, then search reviews, then decide what specialty to start with etc." I have no idea and with so many right and left turns to take it's hard to know what to watch out for. Then when you're a new patient they dont' always get you in right away. Or the follow up appts are MONTHS apart. So it's hard to know what you should be patient with and what is a red flag to definitely find someone else.

could you do a video about the best places to find good therapists?? especially in person therapists??
my first therapist was given to me by the guidance counselor at my high school. my second therapist was from the counseling center at my college. but now that im out of college, im looking for a new therapist and i dont know where to turn. i got a list from my primary care physician but she goes to the extremely homophobic church i used to go to in grade school and knows a lot of my family... if she shares the beliefs of that church, im afraid she may be homophobic, and then the therapists she recommended to me may have those same beliefs and aren't going to accept me as a member of the lgbtq+ community. i looked for some therapists on my own but im not sure which websites are credible.

in my country we have psychologist who is actualy a therapist and deals with smaller issues, disorders, smaller traumas, bihaverial issues, can't prescribe heavy meds, can only give you things like diazepam lighter one, like to 20mg, can do couple and family therapies, identity crisis and simmilar. and if in their work they stumbel upon serious issues like signs of serious mental ilness, like schizophrenia, bipolar etc they must by law transfer patient to a medical clinical psychiatrist coz they are the only one who can give such diagnosis, do tests and treat it by medications. but also cases of attempt suicide, complex ptsd and severe ptsd ( since the end of a war and many cases of violent outcomes and tragic stories) such people must be admited by clinical psychiatrist who after all the things wich needs to be done, have consults with a bunch of other psychiatrist and then they decide for every case individualy, should person be treated strictly by psychiatrist or combination of psychiatrist and psychologist. in my case i am combined case, i see my psychologis for dealing with trauma, handeling every day stress and life and he then decides when and if is needed to contact my psychiatrist ( wich happenes usually once per year, always in same time of a year) with detailed paperwork and suggests what kind of medications i should use, so i go to see psychiatrist, have small chat about meds and how i am handling them, how i generaly feel., how much does therapy with psychologist helps or not and then they prescribe me certain medications if they decide i really need them. i must say that this combination works for me, coz i chose my psychologist who after some time recomended the other one, i was suggestesd for group therapy wich also helped a lot and i was given some advices how to distress myself ( i really like colouring books for adults lol), building games, games with building animal shelters and simmilar, here they divided those 2 fields coz there is no need for some people to see clinical one if they dont need serious meds, same as people with serious mental conditions have no use from just therapist, they need meds, coz they are ill, therapy will not solve their issues, coz they have real medical state wich only meds can solve..
