- And if one day I should become
A singer with a Spanish bum
Who sings for women of great virtue
I'd sing to them with a guitar
I borrowed from a coffee bar
Well, what you don't know doesn't hurt you
My name would be Antonio
And all my bridges I would burn
And when I gave them some they'd know
I'd expect something in return
I'd have to get drunk every night
And talk about virility
With some old grandmother
That might be decked out like a christmas tree
And though pink elephants I'd see
Though I'd be drunk as I could be
Still I would sing my song to me
About the time they called me "Jacky"
If I could be for only an hour
If I could be for an hour every day
If I could be for just one little hour
Cute in a stupid ass way
And if I joined the social whirl
Became procurer of young girls
Then i would have my own bordellos
My record would be number one
And I'd sell records by the ton
All sung by many other fellows
My name would then be handsome Jack
And I'd sell boats of opium
Whisky that came from Twickenham
Authentic queers
And phony virgins
If I had banks on every finger
A finger in every country
And every country ruled by me
I'd still know where I'd want to be
Locked up inside my opium den
Surrounded by some china men
I'd sing the song that I sang then
About the time they called me "Jacky"
If I could be for only an hour
If I could be for an hour every day
If I could be for just one little hour
Cute in a stupid ass way
Now, tell me, wouldn't it be nice
That if one day in paradise
I'd sing for all the ladies up there
And they would sing along with me
And we be so happy there to be
Cos' down below is really nowhere
My name would then be Junipher
Then I would know where I was going
And then I would become all knowing
My beard so very long and flowing
If I became deaf, dumb and blind
(was: If I could play deaf, dumb and blind)
Because I pitied all mankind
And broke my heart to make things right
I know that every single night
When my angelic work was through
The angels and the Devil too
Would sing my childhood song to me
About the time they called me "Jacky"
If I could be for only an hour
If I could be for an hour every day
If I could be for just one little hour
Cute in a stupid ass way Видеоклипы
Thank you for all your comments.
I made this video from an old video tape and I tried to restore it
as a tribute to one of my favourite singers of all time: the Great Scott Walker.
Happy Xmas and enjoy the good old music!
Thank you drgonzales for putting this out
I really love it thanks for posting.
SCOTT WALKER's voice is just MAGNIFICENT! WOW.
54 years on his earth and a huge Bowie fan for 38 of them: HOW could I not have heard of, nor heard, this guy until late 2021?
Haha...I never heard of him until just 10 minutes ago! And I have been a Bowie fan for decades!
@@johnpeniell9709 Well, it's safe to assume you're not from the U.K., either - seems he was only huge there.
@@xianshep Because Scott lost interest in the Big Time Music Business in the mid-Seventies, was never known much outside England, and spent the whole last half of his career becoming steadily less and less like anybody else on Earth. "Climate of Hunter" from 1983, and "Tilt" from 1997 are still recognizable as Bowie-like art-pop, though with much less interest in hooks. But from "The Drift" (2006) onward, his music ceased to sound like Bowie or anyone else. The closest description I could come up with is that it's like abstract European art films - but done in sound instead of pictures.
... wait until you hear of Jacques Brel.
@@Leberteich Uh, yeah: Heard of him back in 1983 when Ziggy Stardust concert film with Bowie singing "My Death" came out...
Patsy Stone/Ab Fab brought me here.! The brilliant, naughty song and hilarious tv series never get old, only better..RIP Scott, you had the most sublime voice..☮️🌹
Scott was a brilliant interpreter of Brel's masterpieces. Thanks for all the pleasure you have given us.
A totally amoral song about a delusional obsessive written by a genius and sung, here, by simply one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
What more could one want?
Nothing. This is perfect.
yeah but this song is written by Jacques Brel, HE is the actual genius.
Respectueusement
@@carlafranconieri865
Excuse me.
But if you'd read my post, you'll find I didn't say otherwise.
Marc Almond’s version is just a bit better…
Why amoral? Brel sung about being young and naive, unwise but regretting that foolishness - because he was a fool perhaps but a young one
I'm 36. This (along with the rest of the Best Of cassette) was the soundtrack to my family holidays in Spain in the mid 90s. I knew every word by age 12 and wrote about The Walker Brothers in my 'What I did in the summer' school essays. Love them.
what a genius. no wonder Bowie was always in awe of him
I never knew of Scott Walker until I came across a documentary about him. He was an amazing talent and interesting man. I played one of his songs to my mom and she knew about him from his time in the Walker Brothers in the 60's.
Amazing documentary....I can stop watching it
HOLY CRAP! THIS DUDE WAS WAY AHEAD OF HIS TIME!
Totally agree.
wdym
actually it s a (great) Jacques Brel cover from 65
An artist who reached and reached. Scott Walker is easily one of the greatest singers AND artists in pop music history.
It's just one of those one off unforgetable songs. And he performs it with such verve and panache and gets away with the whole thing because of his magnificent voice.
Beautiful man beautiful voice ❤️ RIP Scott - go on, sing for all the ladies up there 👏
Most amazing singer ever seen. He was the hero in Japan ,
more than fifty years ago .
for an hour every day, I shall sing Jacky and Mathilda.
Strong voice and cool action.
Japan! 😳
They'd never accept swear words!
Better be in paradise singing to the ladies up there. Rest in peace you absolute mad man of a legend.
This is the greatest unknown masterpiece of all time ❤❤❤
was less unknown in the original version in French by Jacques Brel
I felt in love with his voice many years ago i still love his voice , for me a great singer ❤❤❤❤❤
Scott was agood singer of Brel songs. He had a wonderful voice.
Amsterdam and My Death. Brilliant
It has been..a VERY long time since I have been authentically astonished by anything ...AT ALL. But THIS...THIS IS COMPLETELY UNHINGED. I am deeply frustrated that I only now discovered this guy.. it's like BlowFLY and Sinatra's ACID love child.
Scott sings with such ENERGY! He's really marvellous. And I love the way he can hold the notes ......... forever!
It's evident he really enjoyed singing this Brel song. And it's a great version. Noel Scott Engel did the UK a favour by choosing to make it his home for most of his life. We had the privilege of enjoying that voice for many years and still can. We didn't see much of him in recent years, that was his decision, but now he's gone knowing we will not see him again we feel it more profoundly. When asked "who had/has the best voice in pop culture" my answer has always been Scott Walker and always will be. No Regrets Scott and thanks for the beautiful music and memories.
Susan Gough beautiful tribute
Thank you Nathan. He deserves it.
As an American I don’t feel proud of much nowadays. Scott, being a native son, makes me proud.
@@Dashriprock4 Born in Ohio, came to the UK in the 60s and stayed becoming a British citizen. I lived in the US for many years and it was always surprising to me when I mentioned Scott Walker or the Walker Brothers no one had heard of them. They were a massive success in England. His management tried to talk him into doing shows in Las Vegas but he was not that kind of entertainer. Yes not much to be proud of right now is there?
@@susangough3677 not at all. Sometimes I worry the UK is following us down the dark path. I hope not. Let your fellow Brits know we haven’t all descended into insanity
If I'm feeling down I play this amazing song....powerful and magical
Having only been conceived in the last quarter of 1969, I cannot make any claim to be a 60s child, or lived through it. lol. I have said many times over a lot of music on RUclips, that I am so glad that RUclips came along for those of us, born too late & never got to go to live concerts of these people but they are here for us all to share & enjoy. Thank You!
A voice smoother than honey ..richer than gold ..so beautiful and distictive ..You'll be missed Scott ..gone to join the Heavenly Angels where he will outsing them all R.I.P. my friend
Love the song ,love Scott's voice, rest in peace Scott ,your not forgotten amen,😘👍💑😘😘😘💜💖✌💏
RIP Scott Walker : One of the greatest voices in the biz...
I absolutely loved this singer Scott was so talented and good looking it upset me when I read he past away. His music lives on. R.I.P Scott Walker❤️
I love this man. No other voice like his.Best ever. Love Love Love him.
An icon of music and a Legend has died! There will never be a magnificent singer like Scott Walker.
#RIP Musical Genius. ⚰️
RIP Scott you amazing person. Loved your voice. Now reach that unreachable star! xx
Scott - thanks for the music
Pity about the quality, but the singing and the song make it worthwhile. Thank you Scott. Still loved and remembered. England, October, 2023.
I love Joanna the most..he always touched my heart❤
RIP SCOTT WALKER 💖 NOW THERE GOES A MUSICAL LEGEND WHAT A VOICE WHAT A PRESENCE WHAT SONGS HE HAD IT ALL 🎼👍💖 R.E.S.P.E.C.T 2 YOU SCOTT & GOD BLESS YOU 💖 THANKS 4 THE MUSIC 💖 ALWAYS LOVED NEVER FORGOTTEN 💖 X X X
Well said !,
I am a Bowie fan, but scott walker is the man.
It never gets old.
Great voice and fantastic arrangement. Marc Almond also does this song very well, and was obviously influenced by this version.
100% true!
The Secret Chiefs 3 with Mike Patton do a brilliant version of this, (The Traditionalists) Mikes versatile voice and as a multi-linguist smash it... I'm just comparing the different versions now.
Oh this hurts! When I haven't listened to him for a while, I kind of forget just how much I loved his voice, his talent. And I will be grateful to him to the day I die that he introduced me to Brel.
Sad to hear of his death. A true musical maverick.
Magnificent in every way wow
He broke from his conventional group mentality and found his own kind of music. Good to know that Life is more interesting by exceptions to the rule.
This is one of these occasions when I wish - oh how I wish - I could have been present in the Studio when this was recorded … a song so quirky, daring, un pc that charges along with an arrangement and performance to match. RIP.
beautiful rendition of this song of the great Jacques Brel
R.I.P. Scott loved your songs back in the day.
Thunderbirds are go. The funniest song I have ever heard, perfect match. No one can get away with this except the legend that is Scott walker. Fabulous beyond words. Love it!
Wow, just wow. R.i.p Scott Engel.
Lovely union - Jacques Brel and Scott Walker. Justice.
A lot of the things we think are original stem from people like Scott Walker, already bein real and innovative half a century before
100% brilliant.
It's got absolutely everything. Brel, Wally Stotts arrangement and Scotts voice.
Scott Walker: modern master, living legend.
What a song 🎧 and story 😅top notch
Jaques Brel is alive and living in Paris!!!! RIP SCOTT
The perfect combination of Scott Walker's great performance with a fantastic song by Jacques Brel
This is so wonderful. Just perfect.
Why can't I stop listening to this
When you find out let me know, because I can't either.
RIP. Such great tone to the voice and such creativity.
Not creativity, it’s a cover version
@@poolieboy6403 A cover version can be creative.
shit!! why do they keep dying on us!?
James Heath best voice ever
Brutal Clasher he did translate the lyrics himself so i guess he would have to use some creativity especially for rhymes
What a voice and song! Never fails to brighten my day ;-)
Thanks Scott for so many great songs. Your voice was unique and although the sixties became more famous for songwriters rather than singers, your voice will always be like a thread of pure gold through that amazing decade. Hope you dont Rest In Peace , but meet up with Brel in the great Bordello in the sky and Party.
Such a shock hes gone from us today 25/3/19 another amazing talent robbed from us!!!! A true one off!!! RIP.scott
He died on Friday 22nd of March
Aw man. I did not know that
Absolutely bloody brilliant !!!
Saw him in Liverpool when I was fifteen extraordinary thanks for the gift you have left us scott and john
Brenda Mchugh I saw him in Liverpool when I was 15 too👍
He was so happy singing these songs, The man has such an amazing voice.. love him xxx
Thank you Scott for everything that you gave us. May you RIP.
I have his albums and the Walker Brothers. He was David Bowie’s favorite. I see why, Scott is very theatrical here, plus fabulous distinctive voice.
This song is “Absolutely Fabulous” 😉
Fantastic voice, fantastic song, fantastic arrangement, just stupendous!
What a treasure
One of his finest moments and the brilliant arrangement by Angela Morley!
Wally Stott at the time.
fantastic . one of the best singers EVER
Amazing lyrics , Amazing song by a simple amazing singer. God bless the great Scott Walker
The genius of this man is selective in whom it chooses to understand it. If your one of the lucky ones who truly gets this man's music, I mean truly, then your in for a deep deep association with someone like no other.
My goodness such a voice!
Q.E.P.D. Scott. From Argentina
Superb that’s all l can say.
Scott Walker is a such a brilliant singer . We ( the British music listeners ) have him to thank for introducing us to the genius songwriting of Jacques Brel .
+ThefightingCelt Such a great voice and great lyrics, nobody does it like Scottie nowadays :)
+ThefightingCelt And of course a bit later on Bowie sang Brel too (Amsterdam and My Death, which Scott had recorded before).
They don't write em like this anymore, and they don't make em like Scott Walker anymore.
very true
Absolutely and it's better than the Marc Almond version!
this man changed 1960s music - everyone listen to Scott 2
And 3 and 4.
It's really a dark song. Superb! He gives it such an edge.
Rip...Shine on pal.
Voice. Looks. Style. The guy had it all. Wotta cool dude. Shish. Every girl woody wanted this guy!
Scott's voice was so brilliant, it had a deep intensity that you never seem to hear anymore. And the way he was drawn towards the fabulous songs of Jacques Brel , it was a marriage made in heaven
RIP
He's a better singer than Brel
Hilarious, beautiful ,absurd, pure magic.
@@dredriesen2827 Oh come off it,different style that's all. Both terrific performers but Jaques gave everything he had and dripped sweat. He also wrote these amazing songs ,my fave being Le Plat paye in French and belgian Dutch.
@@malcolmf1381 yes but writing songs is not the same as singing them, and neither is dripping with sweat.
Had been busy until now at the time of His Death. He's not dead, just went home. A very well earned reward.
This song is never mentioned when talking about Scott Walker. It’s a bloomin’ classic, great words!
That's why its never mentioned!
Fantastic stage presence.
Don't care for swear words in any song .
This was originally banned from the BBC in the UK due to offensive lyrics. "Authentic queers and phoney virgins". I never heard it until I looked on RUclips. Brilliant.
Well done for discovering my childhood friend, Scott. That's who he was to me and my sister, Lucy, just Scott, not a big shot pop star, simply a big brother figure. A great song by the way.
Have to admit I haven't listened to many of his songs I the past (Just singles etc) that has changed now such a good singer good looks and durability
I am obsessed with this song, i love it!
+1welshdevil I am too and also Welsh!
+1welshdevil Me too...and Scott was so damn good-looking...I hate him!!
Yea...……..in a stupid ass waaaay!
I'm totally with you there.... I've gotta HAVE a Jackie fix frequently, alwaz makes me smile. I dance n sing along like an ol' queen (n i'm a gal...HA!). The album is brilliant too.
@@kimtodd1202 it's the pick me up needed for this morning, thank you.
All djs should open their sets with this FACT
His music lives on. Too bad I only found him this spring.
RIP Scott Walker. What a great voice.
Scott Walker & Jacques Brel - Duh! It just doesn't get any better than this! EVER!
I don’t know how I know this tune, it must have been when I was a kid. All I know is that I love it, made me realise in my innocent childhood , I realised that life was always, and I wanted some. I got it and don’t regret anything.
You might have heard the Mark Almond version . It was on the radio all the time in 1991
This is one of those songs that just never seems to age, nor ever seems to grow stale.
Absolute brilliance....
Loved this when it came out ,still love it now
Rip peace Scott What a divine voice that created the 60s classics with his Brothers .
An American living in the UK singing French songs.
RIP Scott

Belgium
@@ewantaylor483 Songs originally in French sung by a Belgian. But I'm splitting hairs.
It's so good it's hard to believe how old it is. Scott Walker does this classic song great justice. It could have been wrote for him.. Wonder if it was just released today what kids would think about it. Would they buy it or bin it 😂 would it chart.
Walker and Brel. You can't go wrong. Farewell Scott.
Scot would have been a fabulous live musical theater actor.
Love this song and that voice and face , sad day
"Patsy, I'm 72!" I just discovered this is a real song. He has a good voice!
TheGuillermo519 O m g! I remember Jaqueline Brell on tv, my dad loved him! Scott Walker does these songs justice and more! His voice is superior to Brells. Wish there were more recordings of Scott! He was brilliant! Never to be forgotten!
Think you mean Jacques Brell
I thought it had been written for ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ as well. The lyrics sounded too bizarre to be a real song :)
Gracias Scott por tantas emociones profundas y tanta horas de placer escuchándote. ¡¡¡¡A LA ETERNIDAD CON GLORIA!!!
