  • Originally from the album, Scott, but, it also appears on the 1981 compilation, Scott Walketr Sings Jacques Brel
    My death is like
    a swinging door
a patient girl who knows the score
    whistle for her
    and the passing time
    My death waits like
    a bible truth
at the funeral of my youth
    weep loud for that
    and the passing time
    My death waits like
    a witch at night
and surely as our love is bright
    let's laugh for us
    and the passing time
But whatever is behind the door
there is nothing much to do
angel or devil I don't care
for in front of that door
    there is you
    My death waits like
    a beggar blind
who sees the world with an unlit mind
    throw him a dime
    for the passing time
    My death waits
    to allow my friends
a few good times before it ends
    let's drink to that
    and the passing time
    My death waits in
    your arms, your thighs
your cool fingers will close my eyes
    let's not talk about
    the passing time
But whatever is behind the door
there is nothing much to do
angel or devil I don't care
for in front of that door
    there is you
    My death waits
    among the falling leaves
    in magicians, mysterious sleeves
    rabbits, dogs
    and the passing times
    My death waits
    among the flowers
    where the blackish shadow cowers
    let's pick lilacs
    for the passing time
    My death waits in
    a double bed
sails of oblivion at my head
    pull up the sheets
    against the passing time
But whatever is behind the door
there is nothing much to do
angel or devil I don't care
for in front of that door
    there is you

In my eyes he is one of the most influential and innovative musicians of all time.
I adore his crooning days in The Walker Brothers and his early solo days but its the experimental approach he took during Scott 4 and for the rest of his career afterwards.
Scott Walker just followed his own path, the avant garde approach to his work just shows how brave he was to show his genius

News of his passing was not pleasant to wake up to today, but listening to his music all day makes it so much better. Rest in peace, crazy man.

We have lost two true musical innovators within four weeks... Scott Walker and Mark Hollis of Talk Talk. Both started out as very commercial artists but both had the vision to push boundaries and both went on to create some of the most challenging, influential and innovative music of the last 40 odd years.

Never was a voice like his, nor will there ever be! Often the cliche "otherworldly" is used rather loosely! Scott Walker had "that" voice! Thanks for all the music. You wrote the soundtrack of my youth "Great Scott!". You will be missed! Rest in peace!

There is no denying the extraordinarily magnificent voice he has. Somehow, this incredible voice manages to shine through and transcend whatever he offers up to us - and we accept and forgive him everything.

It's a 13th-century Latin hymn which has been 'borrowed' by many composers - Holst, Mahler, Sondheim..... The best known use is probably in Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique.
