This might be one of my favorite tutorials I've seen from you. It's really helped me conceptualize the way hair, strings, cloth etc. should be broken down for animation. thank you for the work you do, keep up the great work!
Really clear explanation this may be one of your best tutorials yet and thats saying something because they're all very good. You didn't just teach how to animate hair but any soft material suspended from a point in one fell swoop I'm kind of baffled how much you covered and how thoroly you explained it in such a short amount of time.
I don't have any 'naturalness' because I' yet. So I'm always learning from your videos. I will make sure to be independent someday. Thank you for the great video. teacher
Thank you so much for putting out these excellent tutorials! I'm having such a tough time animating skirts, but I think this will help. I can probably make them blow around the ankles now, but I'm still not sure how to combine this with a walking animation.
This is a fantastic video. Educational for sure, but you also bring us along on the thought process. Love to know your thought process on layers. I saw layer 2 was the center face line, and 6 was hair.. assuming 1 is base color left and right
Holy moly, you're fast aaaaaaaaand you make me feel bad Is it because I was being fastidious with my pixels and stuff using GIMP? **sigh** I can't believe I have to pay for something that doesn't even have all the capabilities of GIMP just for smarter pixel rotation and two-dimensional layering...
after watching this now I'm starting to think how hair movement is almost like a pendulum, the physics are similar considering they both have fixed points and influenced by gravity. a very great tutorial, I was much stuck up on animating hair and somehow you just nail timing with your uploads.
The animation depends on how hard she's shaking her head. If it's strong enough, the pendulum will approach a chaotic period, which means the hair would straight up be all over the place. 😁 Great video!
That's cool, and since I'm a sucker for cool pixel art, I need to sub, plus you make it look soooo easy that it almost make me belive even I could do it :)
im recently playing a pixel art style game called Lost Ruins which make me curious how they animated the character so smoothly. I try it few day ago in aseprite and the result was pretty mess up. Thank to ur video that came in the right time, I was able to make a character animation that is smooth.
Great video! Now I’m wondering if I was the only one who in the final animation tuned out the face and saw a flowing hair monster frantically running towards the screen on two legs.. Yeah? Just me?.. arite then
Really helpful video! Could you please make a video on hands? I'm struggling on them a lot right now and it's a key part as the game I'm working on as it includes a lot of attacks using hands.
I really love your work u did great work I have download pixel studio in my mobile phone can I use what I draw in Unity Please advice Adam as I am new in game Dev
Do you give any thought to using a 3d cloth/hair sim, rendered to a low resolution, maybe with a toon shader ontop? Just to get the physics/shape of the head right, and then do the artistic detail afterwards. Is it something you've tried or is there a reason its a bad approach?
In which software, characters for most of the pixel art indie life sim games are made and diffetent animals are animated while making games like roots of pacha and wander lost? Please reply or make a video sir.
I'm a little confused when you say each pixel is delayed from the one above.. Wouldn't that mean that you only move pixel per frame? Because the example of the pixels you showed lagging behind in the second frame/strand was a single line of four pixels that became split into two somehow
I'm attempting to follow this lesson as I animate a curtain in aseprite, the logic and the lesson is perfectly sound to me in my head but for some reason this is blocking me lol
Thinking of it like a chain, you can move any part of the chain as far as you want in a single frame. The links in the chain move the same distance (dampened a bit), in the consecutive frames following.
Does anyone know what drawing program he uses for when he's describing and creating the base idea for things? I use aseprite for my pixel art, but I wanna know a good drawing program to use for when I'm creating idea's and drawing out the base idea of the characters and mechanics and stuff
This is kind of unrelated, but still along the lines of animation. Say when I am doing a run animation and I want dust to look like its kicking up and fading away as you run or same thing when sprite jumps or wall jumps do I just draw that into the animation or is there something in the game engine that does that ?
I would say, if you can, have an animation or particle system in the engine that is spawned at the character's feet when they step. This way the dust wont disappear when the character changes animations and will be positioned correctly in space, rather than following the character

I quite literally was just gearing up to try my first ever animation with hair movement.... this is so perfectly timed, awesome.
Every time I watch him I remember how bad I am at pixel art
Its only means that you have a room in you head to put something important to become better in art today
I had that too
But i made a Learn from him thought
Made me see tutorials and do good arts
you are so inspiring, i started drawing pixel art because of you!
This is the most amazing an easy to follow tutorial, and the way you explain the lightning is just perfect. Thanks so much

Pls do a tutorial on how to draw walking animation in 8 directions from an isometric view? About 2 tiles high, similar to Eitr style?
