Theater isn't about making the actual words stupid and irrelevant, theater is about showing what is there, what is written in a way to make people feel it.
Scarpia is supposed to be scary, not a small town thug, but a guy in charge of secret police, someone with a huge power, the whole Rome is afraid of him. The music shows it, but the director's tricks work against the music. Of course some people today who don't want to learn anything about history, think everything is about sex and nothing else. Oh, and Tosca is verismo not Grand Opera. The directors ignore historical context, and words no longer make sense. I like the singer though.
Of course it´s about sex. Scarpia wants Tosca for his own satisfaction, like he did before with other women. This scene has nothing to do with history, this is an opera, not a lecture in history. And besides all that, Saks as Scarpia is not ideally cast at all, when we just want to talk about his singing.
@@Altonahh10 Sure, Scarpia wants Tosca for sex, but it's a lot more than that. As the chief of the secret police, he has unlimited power, and it is very relevant here. Besides, it's not just some 'concepts', the actual words matter, they are not random noise. Just because they are in a language you might not know doesn't mean the words can just be ignored. Cavaradossi is fighting for Italian independence btw, and it is also part of the opera.
@@coraggio93 chief of police, Baron Scarpia, falls in love with Tosca, who loves the painter and pursued progressive Cavaradossi. He sings how he will make her suspicious and jealous regarding her lover and how he will capture him and her heart. "Tosca, you make me forget god!" is the climax of the scene, as Scorpia plans his intrigue during a mess in a church.
Forgive me, Mr. Director....but isn't the first reprimand Scarpia gives to the scampering children -'bel rispetto in chiesa?' This doesn't quite jive!!!!!
This is a perfect voice (in spite of its defects) for this aria. But very far from puccinis intentions, although he would never advise anyone on how to sing or play his music. This production is too 20th century for my tastes. Do we really need to rehash all the manias of the previous century: the millenianism (throwing the bay out with bath water, attachments to supposed seats of power (technology, science, politics.) This is the kind of frivolous production that hampers true artistry.
I think, his voice is very harsh, without enough power (he wouldn't be heard over the orchestra without a mic) and just ugly sounding. Not for Scarpia, not for Puccini.
They've tried a new slant on what is already great theatre. If it ain't broken....... leave the bloody thing alone. It's gimmicky and unnecessary. Looks like whole production is way over the top. Vocally adequate.
Wow, this is crazy. Scarpia with his shirt off, gunmen killing people, and the church people dressed, but carrying out the wrong functions. The huge eye reminded me of "The Lord of the Rings" and was distracting.
I think out of today's good Scarpias, Terfel is more menacing. Of course, Gobbi would eat both for breakfast, but that's like pitting Magneto against Toph in battle - he might be great but she would pwn him in 2 minutes.
Terfel was a great thuggish Scarpia 13 years ago, when he first did Tosca. Since then his portrayal has evolved as he's aged and (I suppose) gained new insights into the character. Gobbi was OK, but frankly I prefer the more modern Scarpias.
This serves to demonstrate how NOT to stage opera! The music alone should suffice to send shivers down the spine. This set-up was inappropriate, contrived, and distracting. And the whole package did NOT send shivers down the spine. Listen to Tito Gobbi being a sex fiend with his clothes on!
This scene is definately too gay. At first he has a had a good education but not hating women, he's hating all people. These are the points of his charakter. A lot of time singing calm and controlled in the second act. You can't get rid of these facts. A good voice, unfortunately in the middle range of the voice you hear an ugly throat dumpling, and ugly vibrato. In fact absolute unsexy. Because of these technical problems, I dont't believe his voice can sound over the orchestra without mic.
Where do you get these insights into Scarpia? All that's known about him is that he's ruthless and lustful, untrustworthy and venal. Also, every production and performer does the staging differently. I quite like this Scarpia, and Gidon Saks is a great singer.
I think this is the production they used in the the James Bond "Quantum of Solace" with Daniel Craig
I was wondering about that, it looked familiar, but the angle in the movie was so different I wasn't positive.
I never thought Scarpia could be so camp
Theater isn't about making the actual words stupid and irrelevant, theater is about showing what is there, what is written in a way to make people feel it.
so true: the medium is the message
Esplendido final del acto 1º. Magnifica producción..¡¡¡
Remind me a scene of 007 quantum of solace "opera scene" ...
It is exactly this production that the movie uses

Magnificent voice and stage presence, but oh, dear, there aren't even words for the staging.
Quite a change from his performance as the Mikado.

Goodbye Mr Bond
I don't get what the hate is about. I think this is amazing.
Then, can you help me understand what's going on in this scene? None of it makes any sense to me.

The huge eye keeps saying:
Il Signor vede ogni cosa... Wrong opera, but true. Thst includes the sacrilege. I would worry if I were him..🤔
A fine interpretation. I feel Scarpia's pain. I can understand why this production was used in 'Quantam' very visual.
Terrible singing.
Ora capite perché l'Opera è morta!
Do you have full video? Or where can i found this full version?

Can't view it - it's marked private
Are they really using microphones?
They must. The stage is huge and people are sitting far away.

Gidon Saks has an interesting voice but could only listing to him instead of watch him perform.
Puccini would have been disgusted with the interpretation and the orchestra. The producers and conducter should never be allowed near a theatre again

Nasty piece of work ain't he? Slightly kinky in this very modern production. No wonder he's amplified on that huge stage etc.

His voice is fine but the staging is creepy and the message scary.
ok you little kid.

The vestments are alright, but they turned this into some cheesy political statement and it kind of just ends up looking pretty stupid at the end.

Very creepy interpretation. I mean not singing, but direction.
Is Scarpia drunk? He keeps staggering around and taking off his clothes for no reason. This is super annoying version.
Drunk with lust - blood lust for Cavarodossi's execution and plain lust for Tosca.
Drunk with passion
Disgusting
