This song is amazing! The funny thing is, I first heard it in the car on the way to a birthday dinner in Toronto where a car was stalled in the left hand turn lane. I feel like one could substitute any city in Canada 😂. Such a beautiful lyrical journey that encapsulates life. ❤ btw- visited Winnipeg in fall of 2022. I LOVE Winnipeg.
I get why people might hate the laughing, but I think it's a good exploration of what this song is. Because idk about you guys, but initially this song did elicit a smile when I first heard it. I understand why people laugh when he first says "I hate Winnipeg". And the self-deprecating line about how the Jets were lousy anyway is just a funny, jokey line. Where the song shines is that repetition of "I hate Winnipeg". John Darnielle sums it up so well - it's like a skeleton of a feeling at the start, but by the end it's a walking, breathing human being. And if you listen to the crowd, they only laugh at that first instance. By the end, the video is deadly silent and the applause at the end is huge. They're a little goofy during John K's pre-amble, but they're on a boat watching some performers and having a good time. I don't fault them for that. All that to say, I think this video is perfect as it is and I vibe on the crowd as much as I do on the performance.
and a thousand times times i repeat his phrase....still loving it....hope i get to winnipeg someday to check the meaning......until then......"I"......."hate"...."winnipeg"
Came across this song through the great series 'less then kind' Think the series, song and winnipeg are as one. Anyone (dis)agree? Now i hate winnipeg but still gonna go there next year, if only to pass through. Think it will be in Februari ;)
No one is laughing anymore near the end, are they? I'm not from Winnipeg; but I get it; having stayed there for awhile. It could be said for SO MANY places we either live in or come from. EXCELLENT! Winnipeg: still love it!
@awesomeness23456 Agreed, as did John K. Samson when I (briefly) talked to him about it last Sunday (he played two amazing shows in the Netherlands - check my many videos of these two gigs). If this song does one thing, it makes me want to VISIT Winnipeg some day :).
John K Samson and John Darnielle need to collaborate. Honestly, if this happened I would die happy!
Two greatest songwriters of 21st century
I love, love, love how much John D is digging this.
Man, Darnielle and Samson on the same stage is just too much to handle.
THERE IS SO MUCH DAMN TALENT ON THIS STAGE!

A great song and some kind of anthem at every Weakerthans concert.
Still love this song, brings back lots of memories

I've heard the song's title comes from a Winnipeg city slogan. Great, great song.

What a classic 🇨🇦 tune
Awesome song, awesome performance. My wife even walked down the aisle to this melody.

Never been but I started the "less than kind" series today. Started looking for this song right away :)
completely awesome.
Magic. Love this.
Those who haven't, watch Guy Madden's "My Winnipeg", you won't regret it.

With a sound like this, I don't mind if its February all summer long.

That must have been an awesome thing to go to if they were talking about songwriting. John is severely underated when it comes to his style.
@kawaramachi907 There's a new solo album by John K. Samson coming early 2012.

canada!!
that's wonderful!
Nothing better than a Winnipeg February, nothing like -40 to make you feel alive. And yes, I hate Winnipeg.
However there's a certain pride that comes along with being through the winters

I hate the way the audience laughs.
Me fuckin too, man. I just smiled and thought of the memories.
Probably the first time they heard it and don't get it.
Is it just me or this that audience laughing annoying AF?
