  • One recent early morning on the trail, about 20 or so meters before getting to the swallows nest, I ran across this Cooper's Hawk - seen in the first short segment of this video.
A few minutes later at the Violet-Green Swallow nest I didn't need to wait long to see one of the parents bring the unseen chicks a morning meal. So I kept going and followed some nearby bird sounds.
And only a minute or so later, and about 10 meters further down the trail, a look into the backside of a tree revealed an immature Red-shouldered Hawk on a branch - seemingly pecking at whatever it could get off a bone/carcass piece(?). It couldn't focus on the task at hand though as it was being harassed by other Red-shouldereds nearby and some crows creeping closer with their cawing from the other direction. After a short time it had had enough and flew away over my head.
So many great birds in just a few steps and mere minutes apart. A great way to wind down a trail walk at dawn!
