3 Birds in 30 Meters in 6 Minutes (Details in Description)
One recent early morning on the trail, about 20 or so meters before getting to the swallows nest, I ran across this Cooper's Hawk - seen in the first short segment of this video.
A few minutes later at the Violet-Green Swallow nest I didn't need to wait long to see one of the parents bring the unseen chicks a morning meal. So I kept going and followed some nearby bird sounds.
And only a minute or so later, and about 10 meters further down the trail, a look into the backside of a tree revealed an immature Red-shouldered Hawk on a branch - seemingly pecking at whatever it could get off a bone/carcass piece(?). It couldn't focus on the task at hand though as it was being harassed by other Red-...

Violet-green Swallow Nestling Patiently Waits for a Meal
Просмотров 167Месяц назад
Beyond my chance encounter with our owlets last week, I've been scanning for other animal activity along the trail. And nature never seems to disappoint! One day, while watching some Red-shouldered hawks in a tree, I saw something dart into a part of the tree so fast I couldn't tell what it was. Coming back with my camera I was able to catch a sequence showing a parent Violet-green Swallow divi...
Owlet Encore for 2024!!!
Просмотров 5242 месяца назад
In addition to the description in the video intro, all owlets look to be healthy and strong. Although I was unable to record when they flew off out of sight, from the directional dives they took to under the bases of other nearby trees, my best guess is that they were honing their targeting instincts for when they are full-fledged hunters. (For now, even though not observed with these young one...
Red-shouldered Hawk Makes a [LOUD] Call Before Takeoff
Просмотров 8652 месяца назад
In the dim light of just around dawn yesterday, I saw a red-shouldered hawk on top of a utility pole surveying the morning landscape. Was then startled by its very loud call just before flying off - causing me to lose just enough concentration that I couldn't follow where it landed next. Fair skies, my raptor friend! Thanks for watching! Please check back throughout the year for new owl, other ...
Red-tailed Hawks: Air-to-Air Squabble
Просмотров 5162 месяца назад
While walking to see the owls recently, I spotted two Red-tailed Hawks apparently facing off over some dispute. (Territorial?) I don't know much about their behavior, so don't know if it could also be mating thing or something else entirely. Either way, I was lucky enough to capture nearly 20 seconds of their aerial engagement. Thanks for watching! Please check back throughout the year for new ...
Owlet Alert: Stay Alert, Owlet!!! (Details in description)
Просмотров 1832 месяца назад
Recently I spotted one of this year's owlets sitting all by itself on a branch. Although a parent was surely nearby, it wasn't visible anywhere when this short clip was recorded - at least not to human eyes. In any event, a few seconds into the video, and without warning, the baby gets dive bombed by what appears to be a hawk. As you'll be able to see, even slowing down that portion to 1/4 spee...
Our 2024 Owlets: The Fastest Brood in the Firs - A compilation of snippets
Просмотров 2442 месяца назад
[NOTE: Original audio unusable for this compilation; background audio here was used from a nest area video recorded earlier in the season] After moving from the nest tree and its neighbors over to the tall fir trees, this year's owlets were there for a much shorter time than expected. They left for other trees further up the trail to perch for a while before continuing on with advanced 'Owl Sch...
When Owlets Branch (feat. Clem the Climber)
Просмотров 1773 месяца назад
After spending all of about the first 6 weeks of their lives in the nest, when a Great Horned Owlet leaves the nest they must learn to navigate the trees and branches where they will spend most of their lives. Branching is part of the stage also known as fledgling (a bird with enough flight feathers to start flying). With the Great Horned Owlet however, they need a few weeks on the branches and...
All Owlets Have Left the Nest

Clem taking the lead as the oldest has now made their way to the tops of the nearby fir trees where the owlets will continue with owling lessons once the younger two get over there as well. For now, Petunia and Tuesday, are well hidden among the smaller trees and bushes around the nest tree. They will continue with climbing and short flight exercises until they are strong enough to join Clem in...
Clem Looks Around at Everything New to Them
Просмотров 1993 месяца назад
Not 12 hours after Clem left the nest did our latest storm roll in with heavy rain and wind. As most owls and owlets do, they fared fine in the rain but hunkered down until the storm cleared before continuing on the path of learning how to owl. The day after the storm, this was its position to start from. Although I didn't stay the entire time, according to folks that were there it was only a f...
The Branching of Clem (Details in Description)

Last night was an evening unlike any other. The owlets were behaving normally, exercising their wings and such for the day they would fly. Mom Mathilda wakes from her nap to check on where Dad Ricky is perched. Then out of nowhere, the oldest owlet Clementine, branches out. Not so much like flying but rather a parachute landing through the trees - not seen on camera, but heard. (Did you hear it...
Mom Mathilda Wants to Eat in Peace
Просмотров 1683 месяца назад
After a huge meal for the owlets yesterday morning, they seemed full as they were refusing additional beak-to-beak morsels from mom. But they were still up and very active - too crowded and busy in the nest for mom to enjoy her meal. So she takes it to go! After a minute or so of trying to eat little bites next to her babies, mom Mathilda takes off - flying with her meal in her mouth as opposed...
Owlets are all fine! (No Audio)(Details in description)

Sorry for any delay in updating the injury status, but wanted to make extra sure that all were healthy before I posted again. Although these videos I recorded today are my best for seeing their eyes, mine may not show the fine details of the injured owlet's eyelid (still believed to be Petunia). This could also be true because there appeared no definitive evidence today that any one of their ey...
Owlet Injury Update (Please see description for details)
Просмотров 1313 месяца назад
One of our regular owl photographers, Marlene Smith, upon reviewing her shots for the day, saw a solid indication that the owlet (either Clem the oldest or Petunia the middle owlet) suffered a self-inflicted wound when attempting to scratch the area around its eye. From the photo it looks like the eye itself and the shape of the eye socket are not distorted much if at all. Tentatively I feel co...
Precarious Petunia Owlet!!!
Просмотров 1773 месяца назад
When originally filmed, seeing this happen filled me with anxiety. But, of course, like teenagers of any species, the owlets are testing their limits. Especially when the oldest sibling is being a show off - almost daring their younger siblings to follow along. However even at this age they are also extremely agile and able to hold on tightly with their already strong talons. A slip like this m...

I don't know how many noises the hawks make, but I read that in addition to about half a dozen hoots, Great Horned Owls also have around the full dozen of other vocalizations - like clicks and whistles. So could have been anything! (But it could also be one of a number of eBikes that cruise by on the trail that passes through 😅)
