  • One of our regular owl photographers, Marlene Smith, upon reviewing her shots for the day, saw a solid indication that the owlet (either Clem the oldest or Petunia the middle owlet) suffered a self-inflicted wound when attempting to scratch the area around its eye. From the photo it looks like the eye itself and the shape of the eye socket are not distorted much if at all. Tentatively I feel confident saying it looks a lot worse than it really is.
It's still possible that this could be a more serious injury but we're more hopeful it was only a superficial cut on the lid or nearby blood vessels that just got very bloody - and which leaked over part of the eye.
Many of us will also be back early tomorrow morning to check around the tree and try to solidly confirm nest and owls health status at that time.

Thanks for the update Mike! I just went out there and everything was quiet. Fingers crossed it's not a serious injury. ❤
