Malayalam cinema has always be ahead of its times. You have started noticing Malayalam films now with OTT revolution. 70s, 80s was actually the golden age of Malayalam cinema. Watch films of Padmarajan, Lohitadas, Sibi Malayil.
Mid 90s to early 2000s was a bad phase for Malayalam.
Truth is Bollywood has ignored other/regional cinema always. You made Hindi films with Punjab at the center and then NRI audience.
You never created or wrote original content. Made films in studios. In Kerala, films are shot in actual places and villages and cities.

People are going a gaga over new-wave Malayalam cinema, but Malayalam movies have been in class of it own for half a decade now, baring the early 2000s for it content. The reason for it is, its an artist driven industry unlike Tamil, Telegu or Hindi which are production house driven. This enables the artist working in the industry to make movies that they want to make, rather than make formulaic movies dictated by the production house. The size of the industry, the size of the audience and budget prevents the rise of big production house that can over turn this balance of power. The down side to which is it cannot make technologically superior movies compared to other industries for the same reason. But Malayalam cinema have been punching above its weight class in this department as well.

Three points that led to the growth of Malayalam Cinema
    1. World cinema to masses - Theatres, civil society, and the government in making world cinema available to Malayalee audiences through film festivals almost for free. They've actively promoted good cinema, knowing its importance in creating an informed citizenry.
    2. Cinema as a medium of political education - Unlike most other governments which benefit from keeping their citizens under-educated, governments in Kerala somehow have found political motivation to elevate the political education of its people. Cinema has been an important tool for this.
    3. Keeping prices in check - You'll see non-multiplex non-pvr theatres thriving in Kerala offering tickets at affordable prices. Making businesses conducive for independent theatre owners to thrive is very important to challenge a monopolistic pricing.

Bollywood movies are escape mechanism products. A large part of Hindi speaking masses is still low income and wants to watch movies to escape their daily life misery. That's why they make movies with heroes who have six packs and slender heroines. They're creating a fantasy world removed from reality. That's in some part true in Tamil and Telugu movies as well. Audience there want to see them and get lost in that world for three hours.
Malayalam audience wants to take it slow. They're happy with more realistic cinema which is grounded in reality. If they want fantasy, they'll watch other languages but in Malayalam they want it to be realistic. The purpose for which Malayalam audience goes to a theatre is different. They don't want to be lost in that world. They want to ruminate over the movie once they come out as well. That's why so many Malayalam movies have open endings. In Kerala, people end up discussing the story on dinner table as well. Not saying that Malayalam audience is better. It's just that their approach is different.

Whatever Nawazuddin says about churning formula based mass films in Hindi is so true. It's frankly uninspiring because they base it on commercial success and star power. Malayalam film for decades- especially from the 1980s to 90s and from say about 2010s till now have been always delivered quality material.
The only dull period in Malayalam film was in the late 90s till probably around 2009 when filmmakers were making films that highlighted one or two megastars as some kind of demigods and even the one time great filmmakers seemed to run out of ideas. It was post 2010 when new breed of filmmakers started tackling modern, contemporary topics and the scaling up of techniques of filmmaking that seemed to resonate with new audiences in Kerala and beyond.
However, to me, 1980s Malayalam films are unbeatable in terms of long-lasting effect and content. Filmmakers of today still use numerous references from films of that period. I'd suggest non-Malayali film lovers to check out 1980s films also and watch with subtitles.

What Theatre Owners can do for Bollywood Cinema is ....To price the tickets as per Actor's star value of Last 5 movies...For Eg...Akshay Kumar movies shouldn't have ticket prices more than 125Rs....Whereas Amir Khan Can have a maximum of 500Rs...

Malayalam films have a strong story line, realist content, story, environment and character portrayed are given more importance. Story, characters are simple and related to common man. Masala items like item songs, grapphic fight scenes, excess violence will be rejected by the matured film lovers in kerala. That's why there are successful movies without heroine glamour exposure , item songs, graphic fights.
But in hindi movies it's always rich
family stories, NRI stories, item songs, graphic fights which do not relate to the ordinary man. Hero is given more importance than the character. Telugu also suffers the same fate as bollywood . Only rarely do you get good
    Hindi /Telugu movies.
