People are going a gaga over new-wave Malayalam cinema, but Malayalam movies have been in class of it own for half a decade now, baring the early 2000s for it content. The reason for it is, its an artist driven industry unlike Tamil, Telegu or Hindi which are production house driven. This enables the artist working in the industry to make movies that they want to make, rather than make formulaic movies dictated by the production house. The size of the industry, the size of the audience and budget prevents the rise of big production house that can over turn this balance of power. The down side to which is it cannot make technologically superior movies compared to other industries for the same reason. But Malayalam cinema have been punching above its weight class in this department as well.

Literacy and education like he said is the key. It’s pretty evident in the writing and screenplay., very inclusive and rooted to reality. Malayalam industry deserves every bit of comments they are receiving. Much love from Bangalore. ❤
Inclusivity is not something that matters when it comes to good filmmaking. Story, direction, screenplay, music, set design, etc matter. Rooted to reality and inclusivity are not needed or they are not a reason why a movie might be better than the out her.

Bollywood movies are escape mechanism products. A large part of Hindi speaking masses is still low income and wants to watch movies to escape their daily life misery. That's why they make movies with heroes who have six packs and slender heroines. They're creating a fantasy world removed from reality. That's in some part true in Tamil and Telugu movies as well. Audience there want to see them and get lost in that world for three hours. Malayalam audience wants to take it slow. They're happy with more realistic cinema which is grounded in reality. If they want fantasy, they'll watch other languages but in Malayalam they want it to be realistic. The purpose for which Malayalam audience goes to a theatre is different. They don't want to be lost in that world. They want to ruminate over the movie once they come out as well. That's why so many Malayalam movies have open endings. In Kerala, people end up discussing the story on dinner table as well. Not saying that Malayalam audience is better. It's just that their approach is different.

Three points that led to the growth of Malayalam Cinema 1. World cinema to masses - Theatres, civil society, and the government in making world cinema available to Malayalee audiences through film festivals almost for free. They've actively promoted good cinema, knowing its importance in creating an informed citizenry. 2. Cinema as a medium of political education - Unlike most other governments which benefit from keeping their citizens under-educated, governments in Kerala somehow have found political motivation to elevate the political education of its people. Cinema has been an important tool for this. 3. Keeping prices in check - You'll see non-multiplex non-pvr theatres thriving in Kerala offering tickets at affordable prices. Making businesses conducive for independent theatre owners to thrive is very important to challenge a monopolistic pricing.

Malayalam movies were always content driven apart from late 90s or early 2000 which basically went after other industries. Thanks to OTT especially during pandemic lots of movie lovers watched malayalam movies which gave a great exposure to malayalam movies.
Even Bollywood had a golden era of good movies. Hrishikesh Mukharjee movies were so light hearted and rooted movies. But such movies have no takers today in hindi audience. Movies like 'Jaane bhi do yaaron', 'ardha satya' etc will not get any screen in today's era.
The makers as well as audiences comsume world cinema in kerala at a regular basis. When you do this, you actually become aware of whats already done and you can try to make something new. As opposed to saying "our language audience hasnt seen this, some lets make something like this or that"
The recent Malayalam movies don’t have quality of movies made two decades before There is a movie named Dasharatham which talks about “surrogate pregnancy” in which Mohanlal and Nedumudi and Murali literally living There is a movie named Innale which talks about “anterograde amnesia”

Hindi speaking audiences are not illiterate, if that was the reason the south Indian cinema would never have gotten that kind of exposure that it is having now. It is just that hindi cinema was producing a lot of bad movies from start. They always focused on NRIs. Romance has eaten all the good writers and script. In malayalam movie ,we mainly concentrate about story not the actor, blessly almost all actors in Malayalam have good performers, the second thing is that malayalies are watching not only indian movies butalso ,korea ,japan ,thai etc ,so if there is any remake in Malayalam movie ,the movie lovers immediately point out and make a bad ending
Visibility is true with malayalam cinema. Irrespective who the actor and the budget they seem to find the audience to be profitable if it isn't absolute trash.
Whatever Nawazuddin says about churning formula based mass films in Hindi is so true. It's frankly uninspiring because they base it on commercial success and star power. Malayalam film for decades- especially from the 1980s to 90s and from say about 2010s till now have been always delivered quality material. The only dull period in Malayalam film was in the late 90s till probably around 2009 when filmmakers were making films that highlighted one or two megastars as some kind of demigods and even the one time great filmmakers seemed to run out of ideas. It was post 2010 when new breed of filmmakers started tackling modern, contemporary topics and the scaling up of techniques of filmmaking that seemed to resonate with new audiences in Kerala and beyond. However, to me, 1980s Malayalam films are unbeatable in terms of long-lasting effect and content. Filmmakers of today still use numerous references from films of that period. I'd suggest non-Malayali film lovers to check out 1980s films also and watch with subtitles.
Malayalam cinema is the best because of its script writers...80s ,90s really had some exceptional writers and malayalam cinema always recognised the legendary writers and they always gave the due credit to the writers in cinema for its success...
Now malaylam movies are getting recognised all thanks to OTT..but the real Malayalam classic movies are made in 80s and 90s. Every movie was a masterpiece and filmmakers made movies not for box-office collection, its their mere passion to this craft.
It is not new wave in malayalam it is just that the rest of the country is seeing it now and thanks to the ott platforms and social media. There was always good movies made in the past also and it was always about the content or story .
Mammootty used to act in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s movies which are lowest budget films. May be Mammootty even didn’t get any remuneration for such films. That was during the times when his stardom was at its peak. Such passion to films helped Malayalam movies. Also due to a small state and limited theaters Malayalam movies has to be under a low budget, so the strong story line and scripts are the only way to attract audience to theaters.
U should also discuss about the movie leo .... How it shocked the entire malayali film makers in theatre response.... Bahubali kgf kantara ghagini anniyan shivaji shaked the kerala box office....
What he said about Film clubs are true. I used to be in one in the 2000's. We used to rent and screen old classics in our small club/library. Sadly it is not active now but it used to be thing in Kerala. I think it still exists in some places.
Malayalam films have a strong story line, realist content, story, environment and character portrayed are given more importance. Story, characters are simple and related to common man. Masala items like item songs, grapphic fight scenes, excess violence will be rejected by the matured film lovers in kerala. That's why there are successful movies without heroine glamour exposure , item songs, graphic fights. But in hindi movies it's always rich family stories, NRI stories, item songs, graphic fights which do not relate to the ordinary man. Hero is given more importance than the character. Telugu also suffers the same fate as bollywood . Only rarely do you get good Hindi /Telugu movies.

Malayalam cinema is always a gem.. high quality content in a low budget is the main unique selling point off Malayalam cinema .. the new wave is more people started watching Malayalam cinema now. Thanks to ott

Three points that led to the growth of Malayalam Cinema

@@raja-jl9os people listen to music but hearing and observe actors. Albums are different. Ticket buyers are mostly entertainment seekers.
True ...audience also plays a major role...what they want...they get...and all who are part of a particular film are recognised n appreciated...be it main character, supporting characters, story writer, screenplay, director, music composer, music director, lyricist, singer, cameraman, etc....whilst in Hindi, Telugu people recognise a song only by the name of hero n heroine ...the lyricist...music director, composer, singer does not get recognition..🙁🙁🙁
Educated society reflects in their films

If movie makes or decide which state audience more educated and humanist ? can some body tell
Why % of Muslims from Kerala joined ISIS higher in India.
Fan of korean and malayalam movies ❤️🔥
Like Anurag is saying, my only concern from past 15 years is, How Many Theatre's we have in our Continental like Country. answer is 9742 only for 1.40 billion people. talukas which is having population of over 2.5 lakh has no cinema theatre's.
Anurag kashyap should maka a gangster movie in Malayalam in the backdrop of cochin / Mattancheri....like GOW
There are enough movies in that genere
Piracy is the first problem for movies. Because people don't want to spent much time in theatre .And now OTT platforms also available. If there's no good content available then no one will come to watch. Stardom is no more a fact for people nowadays

@@Kalyani561 i will correct your sentance. Our state exposed isisi joiners and because it was the only state who took initiatives to bring such elements into public, the nos may appear high. Yes we have few people who are born stupid just like you who mix art and religion or can't stand our literacy rates and our arts.
@@Kalyani561 i will correct the statement. It was because of our literacy rates we exposed them and passed this vital information to other states thus the no. Might appear High and yes there are few stupid people just like you who can't prioritise or admire art instead they want to mix art and religion or few outsiders who can't stand our literacy rates and good movies . They come up with such stupid statements. Can you just believe that 😂
Malayalam movies are relatable. And the concepts are pretty much simple but deep rooted to people's lives. The actors are remarkable.
Relatable? just because they look like average Indian?
@@raja-jl9os no didn't mean it that way. I find it relatable because of the stories.

I want to tell you guys only one thing...
You are discovering malayalam film industry in 2024 doesnt mean we had our best films just in 2024.. i was born in 1997 and the films i have been watching all these times were 60-70% of them were content oriented like the movies that got hit in 2024. If anyone needs i will put must watch malayalam movies if you dont bother about the availability of subtitles...
Our actors could convey the conversations with their actions, expressions and situation (Its not just about the dialogue).
When you are out of the limitation of subtitles you will start to enjoy more films- as someone said.
Everyone should watch old malayalam movies of Mohanlal, Mammooty, Jayaram and Sreenivasan. Those are much better compared to the new movies. Just for reference, watch movies like Deshadanam, Ente Veedu Appunteyum, Sandesam, Innale etc. Jayaram is not talked about much these days.Everyone knows Mammooty and Mohanlal, but Jayaram deserves true credit as well. Today’s Malayalm movies are nothing compared to the 90s and 2000s movies. I was a child back then, still the emotions an story telling in those movies are on a different level. Todays kids cannot enjoy these, but those above 35 should really watch these. They can totally relate.
Malayalam always was the spine of the Indian Cinema. Bollywood was too selfish that we didn't recognise Malayalam film industry as much deserves.
Straight to the fact and point this guy speak truth but it hurts
Special and most mysterious thing about Malayalam filim industry is the they bring variety if Jonour type filims and also it will workout also no other industry were not trying yo bring such kind of jonorism to the Indian filims because the Malayalam actors are very much of curious to act such kind of Jonorisms that makes everyone to think especially the audience to interest their own selfs to accept such movies like variety types of filims also can be hit in too much level very proud as a malayaleee ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ snd also other filim industry also to think about that to bring variety types of subjects to their industry and also about the actors too because not only thr b8g actors but also the newcomers actors can also make hits too eg:Malayalam Filim Industry ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Everybody wants to see movies on a big screen with a big sound, but the ticket price theaters are charging and in the 90s pop corn was sold for 2 rupees, now its more then 100, if you want to go for a movie theater with your family of 4 you have to spend around 2000 rupees, which a comman person will not afford, OTT is much cheaper. As Anurag said, make it affordable, people will come.
The world of cinema is constantly evolving, and its trajectory is shaped by the audience it connects with.
New age malayalam cinema or old ones. Content is the main thing.
Cinema has a distinct human voice behind it and communicates ideas/aesthetic preferences.
Content isn't focused on having a distinct artistic voice, is instead more focused on being a product that is easy to consume
Yeah i would agree becoz i have seen my frnds say tht no matter it's Mammootty sir or mohanlal sir movies if they don't feel it's a good movie they don't care how big is the stardom they criticize it that's why mohanlal sir had so many flops with these years itseems ..so i just thought of it and it was true' indeed if you take Vijay or Mahesh Babu movies there fans don't criticize the movie they say good even though movie is average best example is Prabhas after Bahubali until Kalki his movies had collection but most of them didn't like the movie the difference is Malayalam audience don't have the fear of criticizing there star actor telegu audience or fan of a particular actor fans don't do tht
“🎥 Let’s celebrate the vibrant world of Malayalam cinema! It’s high time we recognize it as an integral part of Indian cinema, beyond just Bollywood. 🌟🇮🇳 #MalayalamMovies #IndianCinema
Malayalam cinema is so much related to our culture …purane zamane like freedom struggle ke time se we have linked life related problems political problems through drama …theater … so we are creativly rich❤❤❤❤❤
What Theatre Owners can do for Bollywood Cinema is ....To price the tickets as per Actor's star value of Last 5 movies...For Eg...Akshay Kumar movies shouldn't have ticket prices more than 125Rs....Whereas Amir Khan Can have a maximum of 500Rs...
Think about if OTT was something available from 80's ( atleast I say). They never experienced something like Sadhayam, Thaniyavarthanam.. and hell lot❤❤❤
This is not a new discovery regarding Malayalam movie. The industry is like that from beginning. Unfortunate part is that other part of India didn't get chance to watch Malayalam classics released in 70-90's... To some extend till 2000...
Malayam cinema for me is the most pure cinema industry in india.
anurag sir performance in maharaja 😩❤️
Malayalam movies were always stood ahead but the covid and ott helped it to reach pan Indian audiences. Here in malayalam the script matters not the stardom. Many movies of mammootty and mohanalal were flops but many movies with newcomer with low budget became hit.
This is the thing to realise many bollywood stars especially the remake killadi akshay kumar
From starting Malayalam, movies had variety and focus on social issues! All of them realized that after the pandemic! The first film malayalam, the movie chameen, received the President's Gold medal award! Many hindi films r the remake of malayalam films! Hera feria bodyguard bhulbuliya etc.
Before OTT became popular, people in the north thought that Malayalam filmsis as funny as Fights scenes of Rajni kanth. It is now that North india realizes its value of Malayalam cinema.
