Oh my gosh I have been so curious about this for the longest time! Thank you so much! Also love love love all of your plant educational videos. They are so helpful!
@@beeshk2388 Some, like my Ring of Fire go into this mode of growth very fast, others take longer. If your PPP is very happy it should happen as the leaves grow larger. The conditions in my situation are such that every new leaf was larger than the last till they have reached what seems to be the limit in my situation. Adult leaves 13 inches by eight inches. Lot's of times when I see PPP's for sale they have many identically sized relatively small leaves. They look healthy but from my perspective if each new leaf is not bigger than the last then some condition is not quite correct. If conditions are good I would expect any PPP to make the switch to cataphyll in about six months.
@@beeshk2388 You're welcome! No I don't use moss poles. I'm pretty sure the growth I'm getting is largely due to my grow lights. Because of the substrate medium these plants like (bark and chunky materials) which allow for quick drainage, the amount of nutritious soil is not abundant. So as they grow they require frequent transplanting into bigger containers. Basicall,y since I know my lighting is great, as soon as a leaf comes out that is not bigger than the previous one the message the plant is sending me is that the substrate is out of nutrients. Same for many other Philo's and my Monstera. That means it is time to move up in size to a bigger pot and a new supply of nutrients. Perhaps professionals could reduce the need for transplanting by correctly using fertilizers. In any case, as soon as I provide the new substrate the plants go back to full steam ahead with leaves growing larger than the last until adult size is reached. At than point stems are a full 3/4 inch thick. When growing well these plants can require repotting every three months while young.
My jungle fever is in petiolar sheath stage 😅 have it in a Nutella jar super duper cute 🥰 so happy the momma on other hand is 100% in cataphyll for sure love to know this information to spread the knowledge with others 🎉
Ahh its so rewarding to see changing way of growing in anthuriums - from small seed or seedling to mature beast. My one year old Magnificum did that and I am so proud of her ❤.
i have philo imperial green, and the plant shop cut one matured yellow leaf or maybe damaged one, then leave the petiole there. apparently a new leaf grows on the same petiole. So I think it has petiole sheath before, good thing that i didnt cut the whole petiole.
Hi! My melanochrysum is growing quite large leaves already, the biggest one is 30cm long 🙈! But it is still growing new leaves from cataphylls, do you know whether it will ever switch to petiolar sheaths?
Oh nice! They are very hard to size up. The petiolar sheeth (coming from the previous leaf petiole) is the juvenile way of growing, the cataphyll is the mature way.. So it will not switch back!
Sorry! I mixed it up. 😅 my melanochrysum is now growing from a petiolar sheath. Will it ever convert growing with a cataphyll? I’ve searched some melano’s on the internet and all of them seem to grow with a petiolar sheath
I have a plant that was sold to me as a reverted pink princess, but I think it’s just a burgundy princess, regardless I have been scouring the inter webs looking for what my princess was, because all the images I have seen of both pink and burgundy princesses, the new leaves come out of the petiole and my plant has cataphylls. Now I know my plant is just a mature plant. Thanks so much!
Question: when they do switch, do the new leaves get smaller? Bcs that's what's been happening to my alocasia cuprea 😢 previous leaves growing from cataphyll were larger and more perfectly-formed, but now that she switched, these new leaves came out smaller and somehow slightly deformed 😩
Wait it switched back? Cos cataphylls are the mature version, petiolar sheeths are juvenile. Also in not sure this goes for Alocasia, I think they always grow from cataphylls
@@plantwithroos I must've misunderstood then. But really, it did switch back to new leave coming out of the stem. Weird thing is I got a transparent pot and I can see the root system growing exponentially but according to your explanation, she switched back to juvenile stage, growing smaller leaves and all, which is very weird. Thanks for your response, regardless ❤
Plants can switch back, especially if moved (after buying, or shipping) or in winter, in less ideal conditions etc. So if it was working on roots a lot it may have moved its attention there instead of big leaves. Hopefully it will start to grow bigger / more mature leaves again for you!
Ty so much for explaining
You're so welcome

My Monstera Borsigiana!
My Philodendron Pink Princess just pulled this stunt on me. Stumbled on this looking for an answer. So now I know. Thanks!
Haha they are infamous for their stunts!! Glad you found what you were searching for ✌🏻️❤️
OMG! When did this happen for you?! Now I am waiting for the day

@@klausfiedler64 Thank you so much for this detailed reply! Holy moly... this are some huge leaves. Do you have your PPP on moss pole?

That’s so cool, I never knew the difference! I’ll have to keep an eye on my pink princess to see the switch!
Glad you found it helpful! ❤️
Aww ferry was so tiny
Haha he was but this was not him! I got him in 2019 as a one leaf cutting. This was one of my other monstera rescues!
Great explanation!
Thank you very much!

My Philodendron subhastatum just switched from growing out of petiolar sheaths to cataphylls🤩

Ooh that's lucky! Yeah it must have been the top leaf that was growing from the petiole still
Yaaay my beloved baby monster is growing up!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
My Squamiferum ❤
It is amazing!
This happened to my crystallinums latest leaf. I was wondering how it happened. And thought “maybe it’s flowering”. Good to know!
Very cool! Means it's happy 👌🏻
@@plantwithroos but the bottom of my leaves are turning soft and less green then yellow/brownz😭
Can it be old leaves dying off? If it's soft mushy check the roots - there might be an issue

Philodendron billietiae does the same 😍👍🙏
Yessss that's awesome!! I don't have one of those (yet) but my atabap also grows the baby way right now. Hopefully it will het big one day!
