Most new mowers do NOT have a drain plug.
I just used this setup to change the oil in my riding lawn mower, and it worked flawlessly. It was the quickest, easiest and cleanest oil change I have ever done. Thanks for sharing this with us.
My grandfather patented an "Apparatus for Removing Crankcase Oil" in 1970. It was the exact same principal, with a hand pump. He manufactured them by hand and sold them to large equipment companies so they could pull oil samples in the field, etc... I even worked for him some making them. This is a very cool home / DIY implementation! Nice work!

Using the pop bottle top as an adapter to the shop vac is genius. I have never progressed beyond a rag shoved into the vac next to small clear hose. Very clever and well done!

I have been an oil change tech (Grease monkey) as a teenager and a hobby mechanic as an adult, and I have never seen this! I wish I saw this 20 years ago! Great simple invention that I will surely build and use.
Simplex Aeroplanes I have a small vacuum pump that is manually operated for doing this. I like this idea because you can cap the bottle and take it to be recycled very easily.

Well, I finally put all this together and did it! WOW!! All my 3 year old filthy oil was gone from my lawn mower in 30 seconds. Actually, I was somewhat disappointed, after procrastinating for so long, that it went so smoothly and flawlessly. I wanted more bang for my buck. You know, fireworks, the old AstroDome board lighting up after a touchdown (I live in Houston), something. But, beggars can't be choosy. Thank you!

Just recently bought a used mower for a nephew and the wife and I did a clean and service on it, well first 4 stroke I've worked on without a drain plug , good ol RUclips to the rescue, that's how I found this video, one mayo jar and a trip to the hardware store, I've made a tool that I'll never pull a drain plug on a 4 stroke ever again, thank you for your video.
Chris, you've got the best DIY stuff on the 'net! I used this technique to change the oil in our mowers and small engines. We've got 3 small push mowers, a generator, a roto-tiller and a snow blower and changing the oil was a real job. Then I came across your video with the wet/dry vac and gave it a try. It turned a horrible job into a piece of cake!! Keep up the good work!
Wow! A solution to do a half assed job leaving lots of old oil in the engine - this is how the job should really be done.

My son and I built a similar rig to bleed brakes on a car, truck, or motorcycle. (Most manufacturers require a complete flush of the brake system every two years or 50,000 Km.) We used a pickle jar for a container and a small plastic funnel for the adapter. We were a little concerned that the jar might get knocked over and break spilling the contents so we put it in a 2 1/2 gallon drywall mud pail and packed rags around it to make sure it stayed upright. (Later on we removed the rags, greased the jar with vaseline and pored plaster of paris around it for weight to keep the bucket from toppling over. Once the plaster starts to harden simply twist the jar and pull it out and then let the plaster cure.) We ran the suction hose to the open bleeder nipple in the wheel cylinder and started it up. It worked fine but because of leakage around the bleeder screw it was hard to gauge when there was no air in the system. We fixed that by sealing it with a bit of plumbers putty and it worked just fine. You can bleed an entire system in about 30 minutes but make sure you top off the master cylinder and keep it topped up with fresh brake fluid while the vacuum is running. Because the hose is clear, you can readily see when the new fluid is being drawn through. On systems with disc brakes, make sure you pump the brakes up before driving the vehicle because the calipers might be slightly drawn back with the vacuum. (This has never happened to us but safety first.) Makes a miserable job quick and easy. It also works on great hydraulic clutch systems.

This home made suction canister is the exact same technology that is used for suction during surgery. The main difference being that the suction comes from a nozzle in the wall, rather than a shop vac. Cool idea to use it in this application. 👍
It works great for surgery, I just removed one of my kidneys to sell on the black market so I could pay rent this month... no bloody mess on the floor.

Was time to change oil in my lawnmower and I wanted a better way than just typing it on it's side. I have RUclips a look and this popped up.
I had some tubing from another project, a 20 ounce soda bottle, and we just finished off a large jar of peanut butter. The peanut butter jar was plastic but it held up fine.
Made changing the oil much easier. I put the wheels opposite the full/drain tube in a 2x4 to help more oil run to that side. I feel like I got more oil out this way and got a better change.

my new Toro doesn't even have a drain plug. You have to tip the mower on it's side to drain the oil. great idea!
The drain plug is probably under the mower deck.

True 👍🏼, same with the Weedeater Briggs &Stratton no drain plug, been tilting mower on side and placing a baggie over gas opening to prevent losing gasoline but this is a cool idea for other motors that require oil change
So what is wrong with that? No tools needed, takes less than a minute.
Most lawnmowers are like that. You know what? No tools needed.

I just had a thought! Folks who use the Nalgene (or any plastic) variant may also benefit from being able to hold/drag a magnet to the outside walls of the container to detect if any metal shavings/particulate was found in the oil, which gives you a good idea if your engine is operating properly. I reckon the glass walls may be too thick to allow for this, but ymmv!

I just did this exactly like he showed with a glass Mason jar. It worked flawlessly! This is a huge time and mess saver. After collecting the few materials needed it only took about 10 minutes to assemble. Great idea and video!

Looks a great method and look forward to trying it. Here’s an idea, mark the level of old oil in the container and use it as a measure to replace with new oil, and could the same system be used in reverse to blow the new oil back in?

Tried this for a couple push mowers yesterday. Worked great! The mowers have no drain plugs so this was a painless and clean way to remove the old, dirty oil. Easy, peezy. Thanks so much for the video instruction!

The gas sucking is not recommended. It's all about the vapours that you create from doing that that could possibly get you in trouble.

@@hillcountrygarage shop vacs explode when cleaning leaves and rat's nests from car carburetors. The vapors load the can then travel to the brushes.
I have my list to gather the materials. I just changed the oil in two self propelled lawnmowers. You must first remove the blade. Then clean the underside to find the tiny bolts that hold the plastic belt guard in place. Remove it. Then clean the bottom of the engine that didn't come clean from the first wash. Then find the drain plug and drain the oil. Then put it all together again. That was the first one. The second mower that I tore it completely down only to find no removable drain plug. I tried tipping it to get the oil out of the fill tube. And I only got about half of it out then the mower slipped and hit the drain pan flipping it. The oil went across a large area of my shop floor. I was so excited to see this option for changing the oil. Thank You!

This is so much better than the old pump vacuum set up I used to use. That needed pumping too often, especially towards the end of its life. I had everything I needed right in the shop. I used a plastic olive jug which felt quite rigid, but ended up collapsing as the oil got high enough and warm enough to soften it. Switching to a glass jug next time. I just changed the Lawn mower, Chipper and the water blaster in 1/10th the time it used to. Well done.

Used this for the first time yesterday. Worked like a charm. I first tried a plastic bottle I had but the vacuum sucked in the sides. Went to Hobby Lobby and bought a Quart Ball Jar. Drilled 2 3/8 holes and inserted the hose. I didn't have a 2 liter bottle but I did have a 16oz Sprite bottle that worked just fine. 10 minutes total. My oil was very black like this one. I'll change it every year now.
I had the ahh haa moment and I figured out how to not have the sides collapse when using a plastic bottle by putting the bottle inside the vacuum!! I made a video for it too!
@@chrisnotap The plastic bottle would not fit inside because of the internal fan housing. I one liter would have but I didn't have one. I Did try that first though. I saw another Video for a wide mouth Gatorade bottle that fits over the Honda Oil Spout. Some guys just tip it in the bottle and close the lid. Another easy method.
For a no tool option you can use some tubing and a syringe. Takes a few goes.
Better off doing it this way. Shop vac is super good.

I do something similar to change the oil in my car. but use a 5qt oil bottle (my car oil change is about 3.5-4qt).
I put the hose down my dip stick.... sucks out the oil, then I just spin off old, spin on new, oil filter and put the same amount of oil back in. The 5qt bottle has 1qt marks, so easy to know how much to put in.
Use same setup for lawn mower also.

I use this method, works great. I don't use the jar. I run the line right into the shop vac and into an empty milk jug. When the yard machine is empty I stick that end of line into a bottle of soapy water and suck/rinse out the oily line.
That's a good tip! Another way to clean the pipe out is just a few squirts of wd40 up the pipe while it's still running. I did a second video a year and a half ago on the method you describe inside the shop vac.....here's that video......ruclips.net/video/Uk46vCOGTFI/видео.html

I like how you said "no tools" - except for the utility knife, that scissors, the drill, the step bit, the dikes, the needle nose pliers, and the shop vac... oh and the apparatus you end up with. having said that, this is awesome and works beautifully.
Lol! You're right!! But excluding what you need to build it, there is no actual wrenches to do the oil change.
THis is a great tool for changing the rear differential fluid on a 1963 to 1981 corvette. It turns a 3 hour ( + or - ) job into a 5 minute job. The diff cover is an integral part of the suspension. Not only is it the diff. cover it is the mounting bracket for the travers leaf spring. 2 thumbs up!
It will take longer to suck it out compared to heated lawnmower oil because of the sae90 gear oil but still a lot less hassle! That's great. Let us know how it goes in the comments when you do try it. Thanks.
@@chrisnotap I'll increase the hose size and maybe tape of the vacuum/soda bottle connect increasing the suction power. I can also take the car for a tire spinning ride to heat up the gear lube. I won't be doing the job in the near future for I replace the oil 4 years ago. Thanks!

Chris, I followed your instructions and made the "device" which I promptly tried on my snow blower in preparation for our winter weather. It worked perfectly. Thank you for the insightful video. By the way, for us Canadians, this same system will work for removing "summer windshield washer fluid" and adding the -40 F washer fluid! Just save the summer fluid in the "summer jug!"
Regarding your snow blower; I have a 41 year old MTD blower in which I put the ORIGINAL Slick 50 (not the crap that is sold today) when it was a year old. Since then I've been running a continuous experiment and have NEVER changed the oil. It doesn't use oil and it still smells like oil when I check it. Heck it even has the original spark plug (which I'm doubtful I could remove now as it's so rusted it's not even hexagonal anymore). If it ain't broke, don't fix it. That thing with it's 8 hp Briggs & Stratton engine starts right up every season and it can BLOW circles around my next door neighbours 2 year old John Deere snowblower. He spends half his time with the stupid Poke Stick trying to clear out his clogged shute. I've only plugged mine once in over 40 years trying to get through wet heavy snow which the Street Plow had winged into my driveway. I wouldn't trade this thing for ANY of the new blowers available. They're just not built the way they used to be.
@@claytonroot806 I have not seen any slick 50 for about 20 years. Do they still make it? I ran it the first 3 years in my 91 CRX, still running original rings, close to 700,000 miles, no breakdowns yet.

This is exactly what I needed for my riding mower! The way the oil drain plug is located guaranties a huge mess all over the frame and garage floor everytime I change the oil (which means I haven’t changed it in 3 years...)

Toro Time Master has no drain plug. The oil change instructions says to tip it over and pour it out of the fill tube. This vacuum tube method with a marked container is much cleaner. It also lets you know how much oil to put back in. I used a vacuum pump from a bad vacuum sealer machine that failed to melt the bags as my pump. Thank you for your video.
I like!! I'm tired of tipping my mower almost completely over. Or I could do what most ppl do.......and just not change the oil.
Many have said they never change the oil. They just add.
I have another way to do the mower oil change. I tip the mower and have my wife hold a milk jug with a funnel on top to catch the oil. I set the mower on a slight hill so it has enough space on the downside for the milk jug to be held sort of upright
