Yap, Mandarin is a kind of Chinese and it's the official language in China...but Mandarin is not the only Chinese language. It's so sad that when people ask me "Can you teach me some Chinese", they always mean Mandarin. Even after explaining that I am not a native Mandarin speaker but Cantonese speaker, most of them still insist to learn Mandarin from me but not my mother tongue. This is like asking a Spanish "hey can you teach me some European" when you actually mean French...just an example...

is so depressive when people think mandarin is the same thing as chinese. I mean, just because is the official language in China doesn't mean it's restrict to this... in Hong Kong for example, they speak more cantonese (which sounds better than mandarin pronounciation - really,in my opinion). But when you compare spanish and portuguese, you made a mistake. even the pronounciation sounds similiar but the writing is difference...
Yeah, I think I can understand that, even thought I'm from southamerica xD I'm chilean, but it happens to some brazilian, you know? most of us talk spanish, while brazilian people speak portuguese. Hey, I have a friend from Canton! and I'm learning Mandarin. Or trying to...
I thought mandarin was a kind of chinese... you know, like you can't say "you should call it toe instead of fingers"... besides, when people talk about chinese, they're most likely talking about mandarin chinese, 'cause it's the oficial dialect :)
You are lucky that you speak the more common language in S. America XD Speaking Mandarin is not difficult, if you don't care about the tones... and in reality, most Chinese speak Mandarin with different degrees of accent, some old people who didn't receive much education in the past can't even speak Mandarin. So keep trying...
