This video appears to use Traditional characters, more properly called ‘radicals’, of which there are about 200+. I forget. Anyway these combine to make all the thousands of chinese words. The picture for "king" did not capture the real meaning of the character 王. In ancient China, the emperor claims to be the son of god, connecting heaven, earth, and people. The three horizontal line represents heaven, earth and people, the vertical line connects the three, hence the character 王. This character was not created from the shape of the object like 人, but the philosophical meaning of the object

thank you for this more elevated explanation ! I doubt I could now ever forget the character for king !!

Hope that can help you.

Note that as you get to harder words, this does not apply as much and some are a stretch.
While some characters are like this, they are in the minority! :)
By the way, if you are curious, more traditional characters look like what they represent than simplified. So take that into account when deciding which to learn
    Ex: turtle
    Traditional : 龜
    Simplified :

It's better and beneficial for foreigners to start by learning traditional Chinese at the beginning because the present characters in TS have been widely used and greatly evolved for at least 2000 years, but simplified Chinese only has a very short history. Not only can you better learn more original characters, but also deeply understand the initial creation meaning of each of them . Yet, in SC, most of the characters lose their original meaning and you are hardly to guess the characters by directly imagining the shape or appearance of that stuff. As a result, you may feel exhausted in learning Chinese through SC. So , I supporting learning TS in spite of its more complicated formation.
I've a great passion for learning English and French too!!!!

      ra saket
Japanese pronounces "chinese characters" (aka Kanji) differently to Chinese. In the most basic terms, written japanese uses a combination of these Kanji AND two variants of alphabet - Hiragana, being the native alphabet, and Katakana, being a "translation" alphabet used for foreign words.
I would highly suggest trying to find Japanese courses online. :D

I believe the purpose is to allow communication. Speaking a language is not as helpful as speaking the language. If you were traveling being able to read street signs. She also said a lot of the language is contextual meaning that the way things are presented and understanding of culture is required to be able to communicate clearly. So she has given a basic starting place of how the language is structured. I have the distinct impression that without the context of how the characters are superimposed the ability to learn spoken Mandarin would be near impossible because the context of a characters use alters how the words are pronounced. So were learning the context.
