Hey there Becky! You have given me the inspiration to start my own homestead. Over the past two years I’ve watched your channel and you’ve helped guide me through canning, growing my own pantry, freezer meals and growing my own garden! It has completely changed the way my family eats and views food. You’ve helped my family more than you’ll probably ever know. We just wanted to say a huge thank you!

Get a large PO box (Home Depot, Lowe's) and attach to a post or attach directly to one of the wooden beds. Now you have watertight in-the-garden storage container for extra gloves, trowels, sunglasses, sunscreen whatever. This will save a bunch of trips to the shed.

Good day! I have a suggestion. Are you putting the freeze dryer back in the corner? Since you have all those water sources on that wall(2 hot and 2 cold) a laundry tub would come in handy there. You could put your drain hose from the freeze dryer into it and you will have a place to clean tools pots and flats with hot and cold running water.( I am assuming there is already a drain there )😊 Love the new paint!

Yes in the soil is the fastest way to start slips. If you bury them deep enough they will have roots on them when you harvest the slips. Danny at Deep South homestead has a video on it. So does the rusted gardener(Gary Pilarchik)

I just wrote that too. I start my sweet potatoes in soil every year. Last year I planted 8 sweet potatoes and I got over 500 slips. I ended up giving most away to my neighbors. I am only starting 4 this year for that reason.
I also skip rooting them in water. They usually grow roots when being in soil, so I just transplant into pots afterwards. It means that once I am ready to transplant them, I have huge slips with big roots.

I also wanted to post pics lol. I started mine in the jar just sitting straight in the jar. I specifically chose the jar method because it takes longer (the sitting straight in the jar was more of lack of toothpicks lol) My last frost date isn't till may and I wanted to start them because spring excitement took over but I knew I'd need to slow the process down a bit. I still over shot it lol I have around 10 slips rooted in water already with like an inch of roots 😅. Now I know better for next year.

I was thinking the same thing. Compost is used, because it is full of microbes that make the nutrients available and useable by the plants. It’s like pasturing sour kraut, or kimchi or real yogurt. Compost has the prebiotics and the probiotics that your plants need. You just recreated the sterile seed starting mix that you were trying to get away from using.

We bought a propane burner (the kind people use for deep-frying whole turkeys), and it saves us a ton of time. It can bring an entire canner full of water to a rolling boil in minutes. We initially bought it to boil water to pour onto weeds in our garden paths. It turns out that it's useful in many other ways we hadn't considered. It even allows us to do our canning outdoors.

I sterilize my seed starting mix every single year, and I have had between 98 and 100 % germination. I start fertilizing once the plants emerge in my water. Also, putting sand over the top after they sprout keeps fungus gnats from laying eggs in your new plants. (they come in when doors are opened, and certainly if you don't sterilize your mix. ) They are hard to get rid of once they lay eggs. So I'm thankful you took that step. Excited to start my seeds next week :)

Last year most of my garden died. I managed to keep 2 cherry tomato bushes and some green onions alive. lol.
I learned from my mistakes. I live in the lower midwest. Summers are anywhere from upper 80's to 114F. I have shade cloth now, and an irrigation system. I'm adding grommets and sewing the edges of the cloth. (DIY was the only way to go really cheap but still have enough for half the garden.) My leafy greens get to sit on the covered porch so they don't bolt the moment I put them outside.
I have sooo many seeds to try so I'm crossing my fingers I get a better crop this year, but hey, I'll just be happy if a few things survive! Those tomatoes and green onions made the best salad! ☺

You sterilized live compost! 😢 the hot water killed off all the beneficial microbes in the soil. Seed starting mixes are inert so it doesn't matter, but my heart broke when you did it to the compost. Especially when you haven't had a bug issue with that brand of compost. If I may lovingly suggest, please do more research on when to sterilize soil.

This last month, i carmelized them in the crockpot which was SO much easier. Instead of carmelizng onions multiple times per week for meals, you're only doing it once a month.

For my harder to germinate seeds, I basically transplant from the germination test baggie into a soil block to ensure that I get enough healthy seedlings. It also helps me feel that my germination test seeds aren't being wasted.

You can also start slips by laying the sweet potatoes on their sides in potting soil. Once they start growing well, you can cut them up and plant, or take cuttings and root them easily!

I’m jealous of you feeding the birds. We moved to the NC mountains and can not put out bird feeders due to the bears. I learned the hard way after the bears kept climbing on my deck to get the feeders. It’s also why I don’t have fruit trees but they leave alone the vegetable and herbs pots. I can only do container gardening but it works well for just the two of us.

If you find yourself getting more eggs than you can use, try looking into waterglassing them. My mom just started doing that with her chickens. It’s a way to save eggs without refrigeration.

I started my sweet potato slips on February 10th, using both the mason jar, and the soil method. Got little buds after a few days, but no meaningful growth for several days. When I moved them under the grow lights, the buds took off. Now at the first leaves stage, good roots are visible in the jar water. The grow lights made all the difference!

Absolutely gorgeous day today in Iowa. I’ve put together my new green stalk I got for Christmas and have cleaned up the garden area in the garage. I’ve got some seedlings started but tomorrow I’m looking forward to soil testing (home kit, not mailing anything) to start getting the containers ready. So much to learn about amendments! Yay 🎉
Have to admit I’m super jealous of your grow room setup! But you use what you’ve got right? 😘
