The boiling water method is for seed starting mix, not compost or potting soil. Mix mosquito bits into your compost, in my experience it takes care of any fungus gnat eggs.

  • @bluesoldierette
    @bluesoldierette 7 месяцев назад +28

Ahhh Becky you’re killing all the good things about compost with that hot water! You’re only supposed to sterilize seed starting mix bc there’s nothing in it. If you want to sterilize your soil then buy seed starting mix to do that to. And if you decide to go that route then you should consider installing a small tankless hot water heater there in the grow room for that hose. They make small ones for sinks and showers.

Get a large PO box (Home Depot, Lowe's) and attach to a post or attach directly to one of the wooden beds. Now you have watertight in-the-garden storage container for extra gloves, trowels, sunglasses, sunscreen whatever. This will save a bunch of trips to the shed.

I was thinking the same thing. Compost is used, because it is full of microbes that make the nutrients available and useable by the plants. It’s like pasturing sour kraut, or kimchi or real yogurt. Compost has the prebiotics and the probiotics that your plants need. You just recreated the sterile seed starting mix that you were trying to get away from using.

Good day! I have a suggestion. Are you putting the freeze dryer back in the corner? Since you have all those water sources on that wall(2 hot and 2 cold) a laundry tub would come in handy there. You could put your drain hose from the freeze dryer into it and you will have a place to clean tools pots and flats with hot and cold running water.( I am assuming there is already a drain there )😊 Love the new paint!

Yes in the soil is the fastest way to start slips. If you bury them deep enough they will have roots on them when you harvest the slips. Danny at Deep South homestead has a video on it. So does the rusted gardener(Gary Pilarchik)

I just wrote that too. I start my sweet potatoes in soil every year. Last year I planted 8 sweet potatoes and I got over 500 slips. I ended up giving most away to my neighbors. I am only starting 4 this year for that reason.
I also skip rooting them in water. They usually grow roots when being in soil, so I just transplant into pots afterwards. It means that once I am ready to transplant them, I have huge slips with big roots.

I also wanted to post pics lol. I started mine in the jar just sitting straight in the jar. I specifically chose the jar method because it takes longer (the sitting straight in the jar was more of lack of toothpicks lol) My last frost date isn't till may and I wanted to start them because spring excitement took over but I knew I'd need to slow the process down a bit. I still over shot it lol I have around 10 slips rooted in water already with like an inch of roots 😅. Now I know better for next year.

You sterilized live compost! 😢 the hot water killed off all the beneficial microbes in the soil. Seed starting mixes are inert so it doesn't matter, but my heart broke when you did it to the compost. Especially when you haven't had a bug issue with that brand of compost. If I may lovingly suggest, please do more research on when to sterilize soil.

I sterilize my seed starting mix every single year, and I have had between 98 and 100 % germination. I start fertilizing once the plants emerge in my water. Also, putting sand over the top after they sprout keeps fungus gnats from laying eggs in your new plants. (they come in when doors are opened, and certainly if you don't sterilize your mix. ) They are hard to get rid of once they lay eggs. So I'm thankful you took that step. Excited to start my seeds next week :)

We bought a propane burner (the kind people use for deep-frying whole turkeys), and it saves us a ton of time. It can bring an entire canner full of water to a rolling boil in minutes. We initially bought it to boil water to pour onto weeds in our garden paths. It turns out that it's useful in many other ways we hadn't considered. It even allows us to do our canning outdoors.

One way to sterilize your soil is to leave it outside during a hard freeze for a couple of days, then bring it inside before it warms up so it doesn't get "reinfected". I live in the sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵 desert, so we rarely get hard freezes and there's never room in my upright for dirt, so I'll be trying this boiling water method. Thanks. Sending lots of love 💖. Take care of yourself and each other 😷.

Last year most of my garden died. I managed to keep 2 cherry tomato bushes and some green onions alive. lol.
I learned from my mistakes. I live in the lower midwest. Summers are anywhere from upper 80's to 114F. I have shade cloth now, and an irrigation system. I'm adding grommets and sewing the edges of the cloth. (DIY was the only way to go really cheap but still have enough for half the garden.) My leafy greens get to sit on the covered porch so they don't bolt the moment I put them outside.
I have sooo many seeds to try so I'm crossing my fingers I get a better crop this year, but hey, I'll just be happy if a few things survive! Those tomatoes and green onions made the best salad! ☺

I also love how you did your research and learned why things didn't work and seeing how you implement the necessary changes. I only sterlilize seed starting mixes. This year, I am filling the bottom 2/3 of my cells with a mix of sterile starting mix & worm castings, then filling the top third with sterile mix. I am then planting my seeds & putting a light layer of vermiculite on top.
It's also important to ONLY water from the bottom. Gnats won't lay eggs on a dry soil.

Becky, to make my life easier, i've taken to carmelizing a big batch of onions at teh beginning of the month, freezing them in portion-sized pucks, and grabbing one per meal and thawing/reheat in the pan. This last month, i carmelized them in the crockpot which was SO much easier. Instead of carmelizng onions multiple times per week for meals, you're only doing it once a month.
THat might be smth you want to try with the walla walla this year.

Hello Becky - I finally have my laptop back so am about to start an ACRE Homestead marathon catching up on all of you videos. We celebrated this great day our Lord has Risen cooking dinner(lunch) for our family and now they are off and gone over to our daughter in laws for another dinner. We are showing the original 10 Commandments to my 91 year old father in law. We actually got one of our raised beds planted yesterday and tomorrow April 1st we will try and get more planted before rain comes in tomorrow night. My marathon will continue after dark as life is getting in the way big time, gardening and finally getting the painting done in our home. Such a great idea to use boiling water to hopefully kill the potential bug infestation again.

Hi Becky, I'm a little behind so I'm not sure if you've addressed this in another video, but pansy seeds need dark to germinate. I learnt this lesson the hard way. Surface sowing doesn't necessarily mean they need light. It's recommended to cover pansy seed trays with a dark cover like another tray or piece of cardboard. 💚

Becky, maybe you can laminate the seed pack pictures and use those as labels. Then they could go into the garden too if it doesn’t warp. That way if you save your own seeds you’ll still have the info and pictures for reference. Also I thought a wet tissue or sponge would be easier to wet the toothpick just the right amount.

I learned the hard way after the bears kept climbing on my deck to get the feeders. It’s also why I don’t have fruit trees but they leave alone the vegetable and herbs pots. I can only do container gardening but it works well for just the two of us.
