    During these dark days stranded overseas - I found your video - it made not only my day - it made my year so far. Many thanks. As a kid I loved Motown. I moved to Europe and on occasions found bands that played Junior Walkers music - only to be thrown out of living in the EU by Brexit ;( Now I am in the far East, marooned through Coronavirus and having past the 'stir-crazy' stage, by chance found your RUclips channel. Thank you so much for taking the trouble to make these videos, and the note information. Your efforts have touched one blokes heart and re-kindled fond memories.

      Fantastic Tim. Yeh, I was into Jr. from really early after my teacher gave me a couple of LPs. Funny thing was, somebody had vandalised the photos on the back, putting moustaches and stuff on the guys, but my teacher didn't even see that - he still just said "Man, look at these guys, they look so cool!" lol Make sure you check out my Foreigner "Urgent" breakdown too. ruclips.net/video/1ItNKGtIqYY/видео.html Thanks for watching and let me know if there's anything else I can do for you. @@GetYourSaxTogether The Foreigner Urgent breakdown is a bit beyond me at the moment (one for a few months time perhaps). I've used your lessons to 'master' Careless Whisper, Baker Street and Your Latest Trick and currently trying to get to grips with Just the way you are. Billy Joel is a hero of mine and seen him live many times and therefore I'm a great fan of Mark Rivera who of course got a credit on the Urgent track.

    You never know what you'll pleasantly find on youtube as i found myself in your video about Jr. walker. Great job by the way! . My top 5 songs i loved playing onstage with Jr. Walker. 1. Shotgun 2. Hip City 3. A Walk In The Night 4. Peace and Understanding 5. Payback Jr's version of a James Brown song! They were all fun but those are some of my favs! His son plays sax and has a lot of Jr's upper register. I need to find podcast to tell some Motown stories..lol Darryl B. Jr. Walker & The Allstars Guitarist and Bassist 1980 through 1995. I was the last guitarist on stage with him. If you ever want some good Jr. Walker stories.lol Have a great holiday season and musical blessings in 2022!

      Yup, it should have been. I did a whole separate video on it mind you. I guess in my mind it’s not the most significant thing he did and it wasn’t his music either. A bit like saying Sonny Rollins’ Rolling Stones solo was the most important thing he did. I take your point though. 👍🏻

    PS: I am surprised that you did not include 'ROADRUNNER' as number 6 of the greatest Junior Walker Sax Riffs. Maybe you were not around back in the day. My sister used to play the 45rpm endlessly, and at school dances, it was always one to get everyone onto the floor. The sax motif precursor reminds me of the high notes entry of Raphael Ravenscroft on Gerry Rafferty's 'Baker Street'. It all happened long before, with Motown using that driving sax entering into the musical fray using high notes. Also, guitar players; like me (either as a bassist or guitarist), love playing the song as it is funky with punch.

    • @GetYourSaxTogether
      @GetYourSaxTogether  3 года назад

      Don’t get me wrong, I totally LOVE roadrunner. Far as I remember though it’s just a drum fill then into the vocal - you have to wait for that killer sax. So hard just to choose a few songs though!!! Thanks for the great comment. And no, I wasn’t around in the sixties to be fair, I was born in ‘74!! 😂

      Hi! Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the info on the label as well. The two albums I've got on LP right in front me, Shotgun and Road Runner both say Tamla Motown right on the front, so I guess they re-released them or something? Due to DJs only playing a certain number of records by each label didn't Berry Gordy create a load of labels to deal with this problem, but they're all "Motown" really? Thanks for watching! J:-)

    Junior Walker is my second favorite Motown artist second to Marvin Gaye who is my idol. Jr. Walker was an unsung superstar who hasn't received any props for any of his contributions to his music. He was the James Brown of Motown because he was funky and soulful with a down home groove. I love all of his music but in the 1970s he changed from funk master to mellow. Not only was he a great sax player, he was also a great singer who sang with soul but funky. Hopefully one day he'll receive some props, or probably get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

      Hi Jamie, I was just noodling around and tried to play that solo. He only plays pure F# minor pentatonics, but it sounds that right, unbelievable. I found out some fingerings, so I can play Double G#, F# and E. As I am relatively new to altissimo, it's of course not yet 100% consistant. But it's super fun to play. Thanks for that inspiration ;-)

  • @fauziaissaka4368

    The general public got to know him from his first big hit record "Shotgun". I got to know him from his classic early 60s song "Cleo's Mood". If you haven't heard that you should. It's the song that really shows the indigenous original Junior Walker. The answer song "Cleo's Back" is essential Junior Walker. Check THOSE two out because you haven't really heard Junior Walker without those two songs.

    @johnvallis7223 4 года назад +2

    Thanks, Jamie! I've recently discovered your channel and have been eating your videos up! Your generosity and easy-going presentation is a winning combination. Regarding Jr. Walkers altissimo squeals (and wasn't Walker a total thrill? I have the original vinyl that I bought back in the day), he used a simple but devastating trick taught me by my first teacher (a 1950's Rocker), of Biting the Reed. That is, actually biting the reed with the bottom teeth, where normally one's lip would be. Walker had ultimate control with this technique, but it can yield great results from the first time one employs it. Keep up the great work and Cheers from Canada!

    • @GetYourSaxTogether
      @GetYourSaxTogether  4 года назад +1

      Ok, now I’m REALLY interested, cos I bite the reed to go supersonic but I never admitted it cos I thought it was cheating. I’d love to know exactly where, how and who you found this info?

    • @johnvallis7223
      @johnvallis7223 4 года назад +2

      @@GetYourSaxTogether Hey, Jamie, While it was some time ago, I must have heard it from my teacher. We never discussed altissimo because i was just beginning and, frankly, I don't think he used altissimo except in the aforementioned trick.He has passed now, but in his youth he was a member for a time of Little Richard's band, and later played with Wilson Pickett, and Sam and Dave. So, while that gives an idea of his musical vintage, I don't know that he had any personal connection with Jr. Walker. However, doesn't it make sense? I mean, Walker went straight to that high squeal (squeals) without employing lower altissimo notes and could adjust his embouchure quickly. It is a delicious old way of stopping the show and there's no shame in using that "down in the alley" thang. Keep up the great work. You are a thrill to hear and learn from.
