Junior Walker was my friend and my influence on saxophone..I had the pleasure performing concerts with him in the 80s and before he passed in the early 90s…Thank you for sharing!

Greetings, i was the guitarist and bassist with Jr Walker & The Allstars through out the 80's and early nineties until he got sick with cancer! We were on a Motown tour the the Temptations the year he became ill! The last show he ever played was at the Apollo Theatre! During our concerts when the audience say "What Doe's It take". Jr would smile and say "A Whole Lotta Money Honey" Just one many stories from playing with this Sax legend! I will for sure do a youtube interview with some one sometime this year! I've been a fan of Jr. Walker for decades. He was a highly underrated artist. My favorites by him are "Shake And Fingerpop", "Pucker Up Buttercup", and "Got To Hold On To This Feeling". The intro to this song with Jr. Walker's sax and the bass player penetrates your soul! RIP Jr. Walker. Your music is timeless.
Please induct him into the R&R Hall of Fame. Great talent.
No one in my opinion could play the sax like him to me he was the greatest ever sax player. I loved everything that he played. Boy do I miss him and may his soul continue to rest in peace and in God's loving arms.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
One of those South Bend clubs that hosted Jr. Walker was owned by my grandfather. In fact, Billy "Sticks" Nicks and his own band, in a full circle moment, played at my grandfather's 89th birthday party. I was standing next to them when my grandfather asked Billy, "You don't remember me, do you? I gave you and Jr. your first gig!" The sudden look of remembrance and realization on Billy's face was priceless. A moment I'll never forget!
And don't forget he played the tenor sax solo on Foreigner's hit single "Urgent."

My favorite record of his, Was Gotta hold on that feeling. Jr. Walker was amazing Saxophone Player, and a Great Singer. How many People can Play and Sing like that. Only very Few. I Would loved, To See Mr. Whitaker Jr. Walker and the All Stars Inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, They Deserve it. In Bostic's day, there was also Big Jay McNeely and Joe Houston, big influences on R&B saxophone players.

I very much enjoyed this program, I think Jr Walker is one of the most underrated artists ever. He could sing and he blew the saxophone like no other person. It sounds like it was crying these eyes and my all time favorite what does it take just listen to it sometimes. Thank you and God bless you 🙏🏾 for your content very well done 👏🏿.
If you were there, he wasn't underrated at all. His records were heard all over the world. I heard Shotgun in Perth, Australia in 1969.
I am talking about all time in the history of music I don't feel he gets his just do. And he deserves 👏🏿 much more than they have given him that's all.
Jr. Walker was Master Saxophonist and genuinely nice guy. He really could perform magic with the Saxophone. My favorite Walker Solo can be heard in his song Hot Cha. Walker once said in an interview with Philly D.J.Georgie Woods that he never considered himself to be a good singer, but he was encouraged to add his vocals to his music by the executives at Motown. It looks like they knew what would work, and the rest is History. There has never been and probably will never be another Saxophone/ Singer with the energy and passion of Jr. Walker who patterned himself after Louis Jordan.

Jr. Walker's playing is amazing. If you're a tenor player, just try to copy it. It's a big challenge! The sound is the thing. Plus those altissimo notes that can make your hair stand on end. "Hot Cha" has an altissimo shriek that never fails to delight me, make me smile, and send a charge up my spine. His level of R&B sax, IMO, rivals the great jazz masters in technical and spiritual mastery - just a different thing. Same goes for his great mentors, Earl Bostic, Lee Allen, etc.
What does it take, my personal favourite. Heard it early seventies, never tire of it. Roadrunner, these eyes, gotta hold on to this feeling etc. The sax in these songs, generates feeling good within oneself, along with goose bumps.

I recall R>C Crawford telling me how when he toured with him in the U.K and they met the band Foreighner in a restaurant, they were really fond of his work and they featured him on their next album, huge success!

I saw Junior in 1982 during his uk tour with Martha Reeves.
It was a good concert with people getting up and dancing in front of the stage.
My Grandmother who watched us after school and in the summers while my Mom worked loved all the Motown groups and played their music till the records wore out. I remember from Junior Walker and the All Stars Shake and Finger Pop, Gotta Hold On To This Feeling, Roadrunner and What Does It Take. My Grandmother and Mom were both from Detroit.

Jnr Walker was my hero! His music has stayed with me for nearly 60 years & I never tire of it. I was lucky enough to meet him & his wife when he toured the UK. My favourite song is "Sweet Soul" it's mind blowing how he gets those high notes. Not in the Hall of Fame!! Well he should be. 🙏

Jr. Walker was an excellent saxophonist who was very well polished in his vocals and the sound of his horn. Several of his songs were my favorites including the smooth song "What Does It Take"! Rest un peace and in power Jr. Walker.
Great video! It's very important to keep the history and the memory of great artists like Jr. Walker and the All Stars alive for future generations. Jr Walker most definitely should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and it's long overdue! Time may have passed by since their era, but the fantastic musicianship and wonderful creativity and unique sounds they created will never die.

The only two singles I recall hearing by this group on pop music radio in the Midwest were "Shotgun" and "What Does it Take" but I can see they were popular on the R+B charts. Great sounding group. Wonder what the "Cleo" thing was all about.. Wouldn't mind seeing a video on The Velvelettes. Saw them in concert once in L.A. and they were both mesmerizing and beautiful.
I actually liked both of those songs myself my mom played them a lot this was her time.

A friend and I were talking just the other day. The subject was about, living in the moment, and doing things you really want to do. I told her that one of the few regrets in life was not going to the Santa Monica Pier Summer Concert, and seeing Junior Walker. I told my buddy I would meet him there, but went home, and though I planned to go, once I got home, I didn't go. I have never forgotten that, because Walker passed away the next year. If you you really want to do something, do it. Time is guaranteed to none of us. He was one of my favorites from the '60s. He had that raw vocal style, and blew the hell out of that horn. Roadrunner, and Shotgun, take me back to big parties at my grandparent's house. Thank you Junior. RIP.

I highlighted Jr Walker in my masters degree presentation, dissertation at Berklee. Modern tenor players credit him and King Curtis as the fathers of R&B saxophone playing.

Saw Junior and the Allstars one night in a DC club back late 1970's great show....was a big fan
When a teenager, I was drawn to his take on R & B and was a little intrigued to learn that one of his early models on saxophone was Boots Randolph. But -- hmm ... it follows, curiously.
To wit, Boots Randolph and Jr. Walker could readily scale with ease those rarefied heights, that of the altissimo octave, a range that few if any saxophone players dared to climb and languish there. Yet Walker played there frequently without the slightest hesitation, adding vibrato. Just listen to Jr. Walker on his piece 'Sweet Soul' -- playing a beautiful, wavering vibrato; his altissimo always bright; its pitch, in point. That aside, Jr. Walker could really play, possessing a uniquely American sense, a seasoned ear. I wished that he'd recorded more works along the lines featured in his 'Soul Session' album.
Of his musical heritage, one could hear, indeed, the people and places that influenced him. One could hear the influence of the midwestern genre. Yet his playing continued to resonate with the east coast R & B feel. He was a master of upbeat blues, which proved why Motown featured him. One can argue that Berry Gordy fell short of extracting from him the untapped jewels that Walker possessed. Oh well, he was never a part of Motown's elite charm school anyway, the likes of The Supremes, The Temptations, The Miracles, The Four Tops, Mary Wells, The Vandellas, Marvin Gaye.
Nevertheless, his musicality proved pronounced. He inspired me to take up playing saxophone. I could not wait to hear whatever was his next Motown release, which to me were hallmarks, and O what character was his signature sound on the Bb tenor'! His influence on me set right up there with the outrageously great Jazz saxophonists of the 1940's through the 1960's, though Jr. Walker was scarcely a Jazz musician, oh, no -- indeed, 'twas no need to be ... Jazz was simply not his path.

Jr Walker is my all time favorite Saxophone player second to none! My personal fave is What Does it Take. My second favorite performance is Walkers appearance with the Classic Rock Group Foriegner with his scorching and blistering performance on the Foriegner song called Urgent where Walker stole the show with that incredible Sax performance! Rest in Peace Jr Walker.
I used to go listen to him play the saxophone when he was teen. He used to go to this one bar to play in Gary. As a fellow teen I got thrown out of there a couple of times.

Can you please do a video about bobby holley he was a good friend and nextdoor neighbor of juniors and he also made some great records. He is still singing and raising money for kids and to help others to in battle Creek hes a very wonderful person. Thanks
