This week I am tackling the impossible (again!), by turning this into that featuring me turing a store bough grocery store cake into a elegant modern trendy winter wedding cake. The grocery store cake was iced in whipped buttercream icing and I am going to use that frosting to ice the bridal cake. This DIY winter wonderland wedding cake was so easy to make. I will show you how to create a two tiered cake iced in blue icing and covered in gold splatter, and fresh christmas flowers and greenery. Let's do this!

If you want to neutralize or “dull” your colors instead of adding black you should add the opposite of the color your tying to dull. For example orange would neutralize blue.

it actually makes it brighter/doesn't change the brightness and it makes a different color but we can't see that spectrum of light/color so it just looks dull to our eyes

This is such a beautiful cake! Remember sometimes the store bought cake icing is a whipped icing rather than a buttercream. Its make with high fructose corn syrup and whipped cream that comes in a tub they get from the store. Water or milk will smooth it out great. I worked at Sams as a cake decorator and there was some weird crap we used.

I don’t know what the actual HECK that bakery was thinking when they said it was sloppy, it was beautiful! I can’t even-
They probably said that because a lot of traditional bakeries are not used to all this colors in wedding cakes, they normally stick to only one or two well blanded color per layer
They were probably saying that because they wanted to make themselves seem a lot better so that she wouldn't go to a different bakery to get it made. They probably figured that she just sent a picture and wanted that made for her. Not that she made it and wanted to know what price they would charge for that.
I would have to agree with the bakery. I would not pay almost $500 for that cake. Maybe like $40. Which, now that i think of it, is what it actually costs.
Sounded like the frosting was whipped cream frosting, which would be why it got rubbery and wouldn't harden in the fridge. If so, yuck. Buttercream is the only frosting that should be used on a bakery cake.

@@beamer9969 you do realize that it's just frosting and plants, right? She didn't actually decorate it with... anything. There was no sculpting, no piping, no fondant work... there isn't much to it.
The best thing about her is she never cuts out the flaws !!!
Just watched and really love how you transformed the store cake. I like the overall design, although I didn't like the greenery against the blue because I felt the whole design should have more elements of snow and ice. I think if the leaves had been "frosted" somehow, giving it a frosty/icy wintery look, then it would have been a little bit more cohesive. But I like the splatter effect, and thought it looked very modern and chic!

You shouldn’t be given a hard time for not over selling yourself it makes your content feel way more relatable and fun, also, your cakes always look so amazing!
The thing that sucks about grocery store decorators is we don’t have time to spend really more then 2 hours on a cake, be it a three tiered, 1 layer five inch, or any other size….. we have customers we have to interact with, products missing that have to get out while we decorate or so forth but I agree, sometimes it comes out shameful and even we sit there going….. What have I just done?

The icing is whipped cream icing and the more you mix it you end up with grainy icing, they use regular heavy cream when they make it so it’s the same thing as if you over whipped Chantilly cream
Some of the grocery store bakeries near me make the icing with gelatine to help hold the piping shapes etc. and it has the same problems with trying to reuse or refrigerate it

Should made my own I asked for a square wedding cake since the invitations design look right with that shape and they made it round... Even though we requested a square two tiered cake. Did associates degree pastry and baking I just didn't want to stress out but I regret it. Should done a review said hey you need listen to your customer requests.

Sorry but my perspective is that, although attractive, it is such a waste of time gilding inedible store-bought cake. It is not that much harder to bake the correct shape cake, using a cake mix if you must.

Yeah I think the comment was more about the caller’s personal taste, they may be a more traditional bakery who aren’t used to the splatter/watercolour effect style.
It reminds me of my sister’s wedding cake 10 years ago - our family and her husband’s family have a mutual friend who offered to make their cake for free as a wedding gift. My sister was thrilled and asked her to make a cake with three tiers stacked directly on top of each other with a cascade of fondant flowers to match our bridesmaid bouquets but the friend is an older lady who was used to those little pillars in between the tiers and all those buttercream swags and frills that were fancy in the 90s. She did exactly as she was asked and it was PERFECT but we could tell she hated it and didn’t think she had done a good job no matter how much we reassured her!

For the hot chocolate icing, she’s not wrong. I had to make some icing from scratch for school and it had to be chocolate, I didn’t have any cocoa powder so I used the next best thing, which was hot chocolate powder, and my sister and I ended up eating half of it

When using the floral tape, stretch it thin around the stem. You’ll find it’ll stick a lot easier and just be easier to apply in general!
Absolutely LOVE your work!!! Please do not ever put those fresh berries (Hypericum) into cakes as they are TOXIC. They cause skin sensitivity {if you are lucky}, kidney damage and even death. PLEASE CHECK TOXICITY OF ALL FRESH MATERIALS!!! Taping really isn't enough precaution when dealing with food. ~Retired Florist
