I visited Male and Thulusdhoo islands 5 years ago and was shocked by the amount of plastic trash everywhere. On Thulusdhoo at first it seemed to be a bit better, but then I found a big area in the middle of the island covered by trees where there was huge amount of trash constantly burning and one guy was watching that the fire doesn't spread anywhere. If I remember correctly, all the tourists were charged 5$/day green tax to be used to deal with trash in Maldives, but I wasn't thinking that it meant burning it in the middle of the islands.. 🤨😐

Actually it’s very common in the South Pacific in general to have various body parts as taboo/kapoo …and have a modest dress code …in some places it’s illegal in others it’s just frowned upon.
Some even have rules about not swimming on Sunday …especially not within view of towns
On some islands it’s expected to wear tee shirts while swimming
…some islands women’s thighs and shoulders must be covered in town
on other islands beach toplessness is normal, but peeping and cameras are not accepted …
on others ‘undressing’ in view of town streets is unacceptable…
it’s all because many islands had various missionary contact and they all have their similar but separate cultural proclivities
As with everything there are some people who may get away with it or may think they get away with it

We've seen many tourist standing on the corals on the resorts, we even reported them to the management, but the hotel management didn't do anything...coral reefs directly support around 25% of all marine species, including various types of fish and is their home...If this 25 % of fish will be gone, bigger fish will be gone...
littering is a huge problem, plastic swimming in the ocean - and it doesn't matter how many stars your resort will have.
the working conditions for the hotel workers are terrible. 6-8 people in one room, strict rules.

Whilst the setting was beautiful, the paranoid beaucracy of the Maldivian officials was rude, unfriendly, disgusting and expensive. While here I have thought many times that I would have loved to see the country before 2009 when it officialy opened it borders to tourists (other than resorts) but now that I see your post I think it is good that I didn't see the country in such paranoid state.
At the moment it really seems like the population is changing fast. Woman are working and divorce rates are high (which is highly unusual for a 100% Islamic country).
But I have to say that the arrogance of the resort islands is still there. They don't want to see us anywhere near their island, yet the local island have a different vibe and people here seem quite welcoming and nice.
