I think it's my teacher Tom Monda who initially gave me your name a long time ago and I didn't really bother to check, but your book fixes the single hardest thing I've yet to face when trying to learn Jazz and it's a method. thank you so much.
Ole Tim's been at it awhile. He got the sweetest tone out of a Telecaster I'll ever hear.
As a singer/guitarist, I was thrilled at 15:25 and 27:03 when you started talking about vocal accompaniment. Solo guitar arrangements for jazz standards are too busy, but then I’m stuck with basic chord charts. I’ve had very little luck finding guidance on how to create interesting guitar arrangements for vocal accompaniment, and this book sounds perfect!
Thank you to both of you for a great synopsis of the book. Tim is a master at solo jazz guitar!

The video really explained the process well and I look forward to expanding my own abilities and familiarity with melodies in general.

Just picked up my copy, very grateful for the wealth of information present especially in terms of chord voicings. I know maybe a handful of chord melody arrangements that I had learned by using my ear and some basic changes.. What a Wonderful World, Autumn Leaves, some 12 bar blues.. rock and pop tunes.. excited to see what new chord voicings can do for my playing on my journey through the world of jazz guitar! Thanks Tim!
Ps If you have the time and desire I would gladly like to see a method book from you as I think I could benefit from some practical examples.

I just wanted to say that this book seems absolutely genius. You've consolidated the solution to a constant effort that I've been trying to conquer myself over the past year & a half or so. I'm picking up the pdf copy at the moment, but hope to sometime in the near future get a paperback shipped out to Australia (hopefully that's viable). In my tiny opinion you deserve all of the praise you receive for this - I hope it becomes as legendary as 'chord chemistry' or the likes.

Another gem of instructional video!
I have been playing chord melody style solo guitar with basically this same approach for decades. I know many Standards from memory, and when I see a lead sheet, I automatically see the relationship of the melody to each chord as you describe. Where I run into trouble is when I have to play the melody by itself. The chord progression helps me remember (or deduce) the melody.
I have embarrassed myself when playing with other people by not being able to play the melody independently of tunes that I have played for years. It is hard for me to practice single-note melodies without thowing in chords.
I hear you. I think it’s something that needs to be practiced. Ultimately, I think playing the Melody as an individual thing of beauty is very important to playing solo guitar.

Btw: one of the very few chord books where your examples are actually legible!!! Don't even need a magnifying glass to discern the chords so wonderfully clear at 3 feet away!

THanks for this Directory. As you say, it IS a new and much needed offering, and just using it for a few days has been amazing to building up my harmonic palette and has taught me theory from a new angle. I just set out to learn a new tune with this book at the centre of the practice. I chose It Could Happen To You, as it turns out, which is a good one because it is played is so many different keys. Started with the melody, learned that and then numbered all the notes underneath (and discovered a lovely melodic pattern too where the melody in bars 13-15 climb through a 3-4-5-6-7 in terms of their relative pitches within their chords, but are 3-4-1-2-3 against the tonal centre. Cool....! Then I made an arrangement with some fairly compact voice leading and when I got stuck, consulted the book and found some stunning voicings that just hadn't occurred to me although they were dead obvious. The book is amazing in breaking patterns and having one look at what is right in front of you with new eyes and ears. It offers some interesting ways to get both theory and voicings into the ear and helps create a lovely method for arranging chord melody versions of tunes on this ridiculous instrument!

Really outstanding book; nice to have this on YT since as a consumer to obtain this YT is the easiest way. Although there is a link when purchased the book. Check out True Fire for a bunch of lessons of mr Lerch.
This is a genius approach to the chord voicings book. That was always my question when I'd attempt a chord melody arrangement; where is a voicing with this melody note? Sometimes I'd have an answer but sometimes not. I never dedicated a chunk of my time, several months lets say, to get better at this and part of the reason was occasional lack of knowing the voicings I needed to play above the melody note. Just ordered a book and will pick a tune to work out and hopefully I'll get my answer when I get stuck.

Could you possibly do an example of a pop tune like a Beatles tune or something that is mostly just triad chords? Would be great to see how this applies to something more basic like that. Thanks in advance
Tim is my absolute favorite guitarist right now, I would love to take an intensive guitar study with him if he even offers it, also Tim i see you do a lot of clinics out West obviously because you are from there but will you be doing any camps or studies on the East Coast?

No, this book isn’t a method book, it’s a compendium of voicings organized by the top voice.

Hi Tim, just received melodic jazz guitar. I’m 76 and have been wanting to learn and understand melodic chord playing. Been playing all my life but am trying to understand the chord structures written in A as in the book. My question is do I just transition the chord shapes in the book to get the “sound” that fits the melody ? So if I understand correctly if my melody is in F do I drop 5 tones as outlined in the chord chart ? Unfortunately at my age I’m a little thick….lol. Thanks for your patience.
Hi Tom, to keep the page count down and avoid redundancy we decided to use A as the root to all the chords in the book. So you have to transpose the chord in the book to meet your requirements, as you mentioned to make an F type chord you'll transpose the chord in the book down or up to F. at the begining of the book there is an explanation of using interval numbers to get the desired melody note and with a bit of messing around and familiarization, the same interval numbers can be used to transpose as well. Keep at it you'll start to get light bulbs soon!.

It’s a reference book but not a method. It would be a very good thing to have in your library and I’m sure you’ll be able to use it for a very long time as you progress.
