  • The 1997-98 Whitbread Round the World Race was won by Paul Cayard and his EF Language team, who won three of the first five legs, en route to a convincing victory.🥇 His team was composed of many sailors from his 1999-2000 America's Cup campaign, and they brought an as yet unseen intensity to their approach on the water. 💪
They were pushed hard on the water by Grant Dalton's Merit Cup, also composed of a who's who of professional sailors who would go on to have long and distinguished careers in the sport.
For the first time all boats were built to the Whitbread 60 rule. Another innovation was in the scoring, which switched for the first time to a points based system, as opposed to total elapsed time, or handicap.
10 boats competed in the course, which featured nine legs, the most to date. ⛵️🌍

Really loving watching these again. I remember the boats coming into Cape Town and all the excitement. Nothing beats sailing.

Why was that one skipper so salty about the code 0? Were such reaching sails new at the time?

zeros were developed for this edition of the Whitbread or maybe the one before

Grant Dalton was unhappy because sail wardrobes were restricted by class rules at the time and code 0s were technically considered working headsails like a genoa but with the apparent wind and boat speeds, increasingly used as assymetrics. He didn’t have one first so he thought it was against the spirit of the rules.

The Code 0 was a new type of reaching/upwind sail developed for Cayard's EF Language (and christened "The Whomper"), and there was controversy as to whether it should be legal for its intended use, even though it fit within the measurements rule. It could be used upwind like a jib but was counted as a spinnaker, and so could be cut larger and hoisted all the way to the masthead. It proved to be very fast in lighter airs, Dalton didn't have one for Leg 1, and so he (along with others, to be fair) cried foul. Similarly, he picked fights with the Class 60 boats in the previous edition of the race because, again, he didn't have one, and was upset when they were often faster than his 80's-era Maxi ketch. In the previous race to that he was also upset because, well, Steinlager and Blake beat him on every leg. Grant Dalton being Grant Dalton. Very driven and respected leader, fiercely competitive and pugnacious, but not always a particularly good loser.
